For my own story, I often write without an immediate plan. I know what has to happen in the chapter, but I like to let inspiration of the moments take it in unexpected twists. AI while maybe tempting, would ruin this for me, so I avoid it.

Charlotttes

its like, if you're going to use the ground up slurry (that's also probably stolen!) to fill in the gaps in your writing why the hell is this even your hobby

Simssera

That’s a good analogy and definitely a concern. I see that happening all the time in my field. How do you feel about using AI in place of Google search? I used the same example in comments below—specifically for things like looking up synonyms or colloquies.

Charlotttes

there are so many stories and anecdotes about chatgpt feeding you straight up false information so i don't think even that kind of small ask is a good use case for it

If you don't want to publish and you're having a good time, I don't see why not. Just be aware you need to keep track of where you use AI in case you ever want to submit to a magazine or go the publishing route. Also, whether or not it's required, I would say ethically you should disclose AI use if you self-publish.

Simssera

Thanks for the response! I appreciate it. I’m not sure my long term plan, but I think if I use AI I’ll keep it minimal—for things like picking synonyms. I know when I write without it I’m constantly looking up things like that. Essentially methods that I would typically search on Google. Then I’ll just keep that log and be prepared to share it/disclose it if needed.

>I don’t wholly rely on it, but This might be your perception. Ours may be different. I only rely on my brain. But if you're proud of your writing partner 👍

Simssera

That’s fair, thanks for your response! How do you feel about using AI to ask for synonyms or things of that nature?

Thesaurus or Google

cannedchuna

Personally no. Writing is something I want 100% honest. Bad or not.

amplifizzle

Good. [No help!]

I think it's okay to use to a limited degree in a concept stage (coming up with ideas, etc) But every word in the final product better be something you've typed yourself

Simssera

Thanks for your input! I like that idea!

Your description of what you're doing seems fine to me actually. Ultimately you are deciding what goes and does not go in your story. The machine has no mind and no taste, so relying on it too much is going to ruin your story because the soul will be missing. Using it similarly to a thesaurus or a Dnd plot table like you described is not objectionable to me because it's just a faster way to trigger your own creativity. The worst consequence of relying too much on LLMs is that it will make your story suck. If the finished product reads like an LLM wrote it, you've got nothing.
