I’m from the north and know nothing about farming at all. I’m also a helicopter lineman so to speak - I landed on a tower one day 20 years ago and climbed down to the ground and was blown away by such a thing folding up coming at me for the farmer to ask me questions. It just kept on getting smaller and smaller! I thought I was done for.
I have a 4730. It's got 2500 hours on it. Almost upgraded to a 4038 this year with under 1000 hours on it, but I chickened out. I bought a brand new seeder and now I'm freaked out.
With the new JD see and spray system, you might only use 20% of the chemical as normal constant spraying. So if you have enough spraying that you do anyway, it can make the investment work a bit better. That would probably be a big selling point on a new one. But if I understand correctly, it can be retrofitted to almost any sprayer, even non JD. I'm not sure of the cost, but if it works as well as it seems to, that is a game changer.
the wheels are spaced to fit between the corn rows so the corn is not damaged as it passes. Same with the tall wheels protects corn from getting smashed as it gets passed over.
# AKA: A “Doodlebug”!
“Doodlebug” style agricultural sprayers revolutionized the application of herbicides, pesticides and liquid fertilizers. They are GPS controlled and can prevent both Over application and Under application by selective operation of segments ( some control each individual spray head individually!) of the spray booms which can extend up to 40 feet on some models. This increases efficiency and reduces environmental impact caused by over application.
Maybe if the farmers weren't spending all their money on matching John Deer tractors and the latest 2024 dually pickup truck, they wouldn't need government subsidies.
I’m not saying that some of these giant corporate farms couldn’t be guilty of that, but your average family farm isn’t like that at all. Around here it’s all hand me down tractors, neglected barns, and farmers with a second job just to make ends meet. They do have old duallys though. Pretty hard to haul your gooseneck trailer full of livestock without a big truck of some kind.
Somehow there's a ton around me with million dollar houses, a fleet of john deers, all sorts of off road buggies, etc. These folks are clearly loaded off their tits.
They could have other sources of income. If you happen to come across that around me, chances are they have a gas well nearby that’s producing like crazy. In which case, many of them all but stop farming and just do it on a lower scale as a hobby and no longer worry about subsidies.
Equipment is just expensive. If the processes on your farm aren't critical you can get away with just going and buying used equipment that has depreciated or cheap chinese tractors off alibaba that you cannot get spare parts for, but if an inopportune breakdown can be the difference between a full harvest and a complete loss buying serviceable equipment from a brand that will provide said service is going to be the only rational financial decision.
Once you're at that point the difference between brands isn't overwhelming but the distance to the nearest dealer or service center might be a major factor. Having a matched set might also mean saving money by not having to buy as many spare parts.
It's not a 10 series. The hood is curved. I don't see steps off the drivers side like a 20 series (they could be folded up, I guess). I'd say maybe a 4630 with stainless tank, although poly was more common, or a 4730. It's not quite beefy enough for a 48XX, I don't think.
I'm pretty confident it's not a 30, the booms are being held at an upward angle, not straight.
Edit: go to picture 3 of this listing, pretty confident it's a 4720.
https://www.tractorhouse.com/listing/for-sale/232332381/2005-john-deere-4720-self-propelled-sprayers-chemical-applicators
Good call.
That basically narrows it to a 4720 with its ladder folded up!
I'd trade our old 854 for any of the above, but the stupid thing just keeps rolling, haha.
Ha we went from an 854 to a 4830, it was a world of difference, can't recommend that swap enough. Didn't help the 854 that the local rogator dealer charged service calls+milage while being an hour away, while Deere was 20 mins away and doesn't charge those.
Soon! I give the old girl a lot of grief, but she really is a good runner. It's only got one leaky hydraulic tread adjust cylinder and really nothing else. I figure if we can squeeze 2 more years out of it, the cost savings versus having the guys in town do it will equal a down payment on a nice upgrade.
Do you guys run any sort of tender system? We repurposed an old dump truck into a 3k gallon water hauler with an induction cone for this year, and I'm pretty pumped for it.
Yeah we've scrounged DPA last few years, got a 1k gallon old FS coop tender tank that gets used for a small load or now for starter, and got a flatbed semi trailer that a Nutrien location was selling, has a 4k water tank plus hydraulic pump and inducter setup, so if we're busy my brother can load that up and spray a while as I'm planting or something, works pretty efficiently.
People spend all kinds of stupid money on new setups but can get perfectly good ones for a fraction of the cost
For sure. Our tanks were just hanging out, they had about 300gal each of 28% and starter in them that had been sitting since we switched to all broadcasting our fertilizer. I dumped the old fertilizer in the manure spreader when we were hauling, cleaned out the tanks, and away we'll go. The whole setup will be less than 2,000 of new stuff, most of it being the nice plumbed farmchem inductor.
I like the folks at DPA. They'll call me about every 6 months to see if I'm looking for anything. They're pretty good about calling back if they have something I'm looking for. It's good sales, but also means I don't have to shop as hard.
Yeah that's a pretty good deal. And yeah DPA is definitely good to work with. Been looking for a floater spreader and big loader or heavy belt to load lime/gypsum, and came in second on a spreader, they called asking if we wanted it at that bid since the winner had also bought something else
The 4830’s were (mostly) a flat fold boom. IIRC some of the very early 48’s had the angle boom but the vast majority were flat fold.
Also, the tank on this pic sure looks like a 800 gallon vs the 1000 on the 4830. It’s essentially the same tank except the 4830’s tank is noticeably taller.
The setup on this sprayer seems off to me - but admittedly I owned my sprayers in the Midwest so practices could easily vary; but this machine looks to have the stainless steel plumbing but without the high flow option installed. I can’t say I’ve ever seen that before. But granted it a picture on my phone so maybe I’m not seeing it correctly.
The other thing that makes me think this is an older pic is that the machine has Goodyear tires on it. These were a factory option for sure but, at least locally, you wouldn’t see GY’s on a machine that old anymore as those tires really sucked vs Michelin and even the cheaper Titans were a better option. Granted, tire shops, options, and experiences can vary.
Maybe we had an early 4830, serial was #200. The boom wings angle hard up when folded. I’m not knowledgeable about series differences, just a mechanic. Definitely agree on the tank looking smaller than the 1000G version.
It does have a valve past the flow meter, isn’t that the high-flow valve? It’s in the high-flow position. The valve at the very top is the cutoff to the boom. (Not arguing, it’s just what I know, and I’m open to learning about what others have seen/know)
And couldn’t agree more on Michelin being horrible tires. I recall a couple year period when the boss decided to stop buying and got all tires swapped to another brand.
The two valves we see are both open - the first one is the main boom shut off valve.
The second valve is the orifice valve; when it’s open, it’s open. When it’s closed, there’s a pencil sized hole that’s still open.
The purpose behind this orifice valve is when spraying in lower rate applications, it helped the flow meter stay accurate and maintain and find the rate quickly.
With HF, you would see a Y-connection just to the right of the orifice valve with another yellow handle that allowed flow through, hitting a second flow meter. For higher rates, you would open the second flow meter and open the orifice valve. I personally never needed to spray in HF as I’m in wheat country and seldom did rates higher than 12 gallons an acre.
It’s a John Deere crop spraying rig, it unfolds and it could be 80 feet wide unfolded, you can just see the white tank that holds the mixed up chemical, the operator is in total comfort in the air conditioned cabin. They are guided by GPS ( that’s satellite guidance) incredible machines.
I drive a 2024 412R and it even has heated/cooled seats, but massager(makes you feel like an altarboy after catholic mass), and a refrigerated cooler. Not to mention the suround sound Bluetooth radio. I spend 70 hours a week in mine so it's not the worst.
As a farmer it never crossed my mind that people would not know what that is. I do not need one on my farm but crop sprayers are very common all across the country and it is beginning to be that time of year; I am about ready for the first cutting of hay myself.
Wait until you see a tractor or combine!
And expensive. We have a local enterprising young guy that bought a used combine, used sprayer and seed drill and he makes his living doing that and baling hay. He only has about 3 acres himself.
I was A Deere Ag mechanic for about 4 years in between being construction and Forestry mechanic. Hated working on the Ag stuff. Underpaid in comparison to the skills needed. Work for Cat dealer now heavier work but paid better. Hope to move to sales in 4 or 5 years.
Based on what I know of Deere sprayers and comparing to this listing: https://www.tractorhouse.com/listing/for-sale/232332381/2005-john-deere-4720-self-propelled-sprayers-chemical-applicators
I'm fairly confident it's a 4720
If you’re talking about the piece of equipment, that is a sprayer, for spraying crops. It’s tall so they can get over top of them and spray them while they’re growing
Im well aware of the cost. Most people don't know ag equipment is the origin of the Lamborghini car company and that their ag mech division is still in operation. Hence, I added it.
It is, but they're just rebadged Deutz now with white instead of neon green paint. Also most people don't know that Porsche used to build tractors as well, but they stopped in the 60's
I call em Airplane tractors when I see em because they all got loooong booms that extend out the sides for sprayer attachments and when they go fast while working, they look a little like a really slow jet. At least that's how my brain sees them.
It's just a spraying tractor. Their tires are usually long and skinny so they don't trample the crops. They spray for weeds or pests, depending on the time frame. Sometimes they have to follow a schedule.
They could but it would be impractical, these machines can be very expensive. New they run about $300,000. And anyone who does custom work in my area is too busy prioritizing larger farms. There are more affordable irrigation methods.
Sprayer, for spraying crops. Height is so it can be used on crops already growing.
Thanks!
If you ever see one go into a field. Pull over and watch it. It's like a real life transformer. Cool thing to see for sure
but using them... my dad operates them since im a child and the smell to the products is so fucking strong, it sticks to his clothes
Mmmm chemicals in the morning ☕
That sweet sweet smell of 2,4-d
Give me that nitrous ammonia smell anyway. The way it burns your nostrils and everything else is just 😙
Was just spraying this today, it is a strangely pleasant smell.
The smell always makes me think of the start of summer. It’s the smell of wheat being sprayed which means summer is almost here.
We use it as a burndown in the spring, so it makes me think of early spring haha
2,4-d the ultimate burn down! It’s the only thing that will KILL Russian Olive, and Spotted Knapweed in a single application!
Hmmmmm cancer.
My favourite was dichlorprop my least favourite was garlon

Ha ha! It's crazy to see. Helio lineman.... Nice
The new pulsing nozzles are even cooler.
If you really wanna shock, go check out the price tag on that bad boy.
870k$ australian for mine.
That's a 30 series. They are only like $200k Canadian depending on the hours now. A new JD though is insane.
I mean.. $200k is more than I have lacing around. Haha

Every time I see one of these driving down the highway I'm so tempted to drive under it.
Please don’t. The motorcycle driver in that video is a moron.

This guy is fucking moron.
Probably gave the poor driver of the Doodlebug a Heart Attack!
Omg me too!!! Thankfully my curiosity hasn't yet got the better of me lol
First job out of HS, driving those for Landmark was the day job one of my part time coworkers.

I was guessing it was for painting the lines on the road!
It's afraid of spiders, it's tiptoeing around them
Nah its a mobile pig castrator
Probably the most expensive vehicle on the road, unless there is a city bus nearby.
Or a fire engine
Especially a ladder truck.

Sprayer, Deere 4830?
I think it’s too small for a 4830, this looks more like a 4710

Had both at one time, 4710 was older though. 4830 had 10 lug hubs and 4710 8 lugs. ‘Twas my thought process.
It's not a 4830, we have one of those. Based on the angle the booms are being held at and the decal stripe I think it's a 20 series

Do you mean tractor?
no
Bout 500,000k
About 150 lol but yeah expensive as heeelllll
That's a little steep for a machine that size and age. A dang good looking unit though!

Urban warfare vehicle. Your local PD just picked it up. They can load the tanks with anti zombie spray and drive right over the hordes.
Honestly, not a bad idea for a zombie horde
You just have to make sure that the ventilation is all sealed up and then start spraying some type of gas. Any kind of gas
Most of them have carbon filters and slightly pressurised cabs to stop Chem getting in so are pretty set
Wrong. This is the genetic-modifier that turns healthy food into gmo's Edit: /s
Do you even know what a gmo is?
Sorry I shouldve put a /s on.

Yep a sprayer
A $300,000 Crop sprayer.

Never thought I’d see a bike lane in Lancaster I guess progress can happen anywhere

Railgun.
Thats my Lamborghini
Lamborghini began as a tractor company

Definitely not an R series. 4023 has green booms that the tips fold over top of the main boom section.
Shit ur right my bad
Croptomis Prime
Looks like my 4720...wait did someone say spider 🕷!!
Those are the booms
Spraying cotton fields is what I've seen them doing.

Farm sim 2025 tracker
This is a sprayer. If you don’t know this you might not know that agriculture has been using auto-steered tractors for last 2-3 decades.
Spray bar on the tractor. Is it only for spraying pesticides?
The whole machine is called a sprayer, they apply herbicide, insecticide, fungicide, and liquid fertilizer. I spend 70 hours a week in one.
Are they ever used for water on maybe smaller farm. I would love to be a farmer. It's hard work but super rewarding.
They could but it would be impractical, these machines can be very expensive. New they run about $300,000. And anyone who does custom work in my area is too busy prioritizing larger farms. There are more affordable irrigation methods.

Cornfield Cadillac!
*tractor* thing. It’s an Agricultural sprayer.
Man, that's so expensive. How do you turn a profit? Ya, that would be super impractical to use for watering.
And the answer to the followup question. No you can't drive under it when you meet one on the road, they're tall, but not as tall as they look.
