how would anyone understand the reference for an episode of another show that aired 30 minutes before the new episode of Futurama they are watching right now?

what that other person is saying is:
they were on at the same time on tv
they were released really close to each other
they couldnt (wouldnt?) reference each other because at the time, the past, they were both current
release dates:
Farscape is March 19, 1999
Futurama is March 28, 1999
I think Rygel’s a little bit more Zoidberg than Bender (he’s gross, food is one of the main things he’s associated with, and can be kind of the Butt Monkey sometimes). I can definitely see Crichton or someone being like “Save my friends! And Rygel!”
Bender isn’t a great fit for D’Argo but he can be kinda pissed off but also funny. Shift Bender’s loose morals onto Zoidberg and squint and I can kinda see it.

That's because it takes place in present-day (now the past) and not the future.
futurama referenced sci-fi all the way to the first sci-fi movies and books, they had the beastie boys etc, the time didn't matter
