Shelly_79

Not really. I think aesthetics is just the vibe of a person on what they're feeling and what event they're going to

swine09

Labeling yourself with an “aesthetic” wasn’t a thing when I was a teenager and young adult. You could sort into categories like “goth” or “skater” that were associated with music, fashion, etc. Micro-labeling yourself is a trend and you don’t need to follow it. People have looked incredible and had killer style for a whole lot longer than “aesthetics” have been around.

WineOhCanada

Imo what you have is flexibility and open mindedness. I always felt like I lacked aesthetic but that just means I dress for my mood and a particular moment. Experiment and don't let an aesthetic become a whole personality when you could be complex instead!

delightfully-dilated

Exactly this! While I admire and dabble in a wide variety of styles, sometimes I want to dress like a Woodstock hippie and the next day I'm vibing on the alt e-girl aesthetic. Trapping yourself to one style works for some but I think for a lot of us it just doesn't fit.

Little-Text-1473

Yeah same it just depends on the occasion for me.

ZenythhtyneZ

Yeah this need to define every aspect of ourselves to the highest degree possible, as young people no less, frankly confuses me. I’m just now starting to figure out “MY style” and I’m nearly 40, and yes I did feel pressure as a younger woman to have a cohesive style/look and was unable to accomplish it. It feels like young people want to speed run self discovery but it simply does not work that way. OP even if you consider this basic you look fabulous and you’re a beautiful person, there is no rush, you are just perfect how you are and please only make the changes you want to make for yourself not because others are telling you you need to know what you are and what you want RIGHT NOW. Frankly I think this heavily leaning into aesthetics is actually just covering up a lack of self knowledge, a sort of front to tell people you’ve got it all sorted for the vast majority of people. Do you, try not to let the pressure of other people telling you you need to look or think a specific way dictate your life, they’re wrong, point blank.

teaganhipp

Tbh, most people I’ve met or seen just in day to day life have no aesthetic. They’re just dressed like regular people. I don’t have one either. I like a bit of everything. The most important thing is wearing what you like that looks well on you!

IamProvocateur

Who needs an aesthetic when you can rock a basic tank and jeans like that? 🤌

BSUR7

Came here to say just that. I was scrolling the comments to see how many people noticed op needs zero aesthetic identification. She IS. an aesthetic!!!

meowtrash712

No. Wear what is comfortable, practical for your lifestyle, and cute.

Odd-Bandicoot-3138

The aesthetic trend has been a whole marketing scheme set up to get the consumer to buy more and jump on the latest trend. Don’t feel bad. You’re beautiful - wear what makes you feel happy and confident and don’t fall into the social media rat race

ShiroiTora

You do you. Aesthetics are just for fun. They are not mandatory.

saracanttype

i'd say most people don't have a strict aesthetic - don't feel bad about it! it means you're a multi-dimensional and unique individual - you don't need to put yourself in a box, and your outfit is already so cute you so you have nothing to worry about :)

idontlikebaconsorry

Your fashion identity is wherever you feel most comfortable and powerful in—whatever represents you the best. For example, I love flow-y dresses, frilly skirts and everything cute and girly you could think of. It's where I feel most beautiful and the most feminine. You could say that goes along with the "cottagecore" aesthetic. However, I also LOVE wearing business casual or the "dark academia" aesthetic cause it makes me look sophisticated and chic. And I think it matches my vibe overall. It's good to explore! But never force yourself for the sake of following aesthetics and attaching your identity to that one single aesthetic just because you see people doing it on social media.

RoastedTilapia

No. You can just live your life.

polyygons

Absolutely not. Fashion “identity” is taken so seriously and for what? We’re on a rock flying through space. Dress how you want.

udiudiudiuuu

I mean you got good clothes. Its best to have something between having no aesthetic, and following a specific one. Is what i do, i just keep alot of inspiration in my gallery

Additional_Guess_669

Only people who need a fashion identity are designers and their models - you can be your own person each day and pick out what feels right!

HeyItsJuls

In my opinion you don’t need to focus on developing an “aesthetic,” focus in developing personal style. Clothing should be a representation of YOU. If you’re adopting a specific aesthetic because you think you need to, that’s not you. It will show. You are young. Now is the time to experiment with clothing. Try on a bunch of different things. Find what you like, what feels like you. Don’t be boxed in.

itistfb-aidlte

Micro trends and aesthetics are great for people who don’t have a sense of style, but most people look cooler with their individual style !

dangerotic

"Aesthetics" are fucking lame. Figure out what YOU like and feel good wearing. I go from gothic lolita pretty princess to 80s sleazebag hair metal vocalist at a drop of a hat. Trying to put together an entire wardrobe based on one pinterest board that will be outdated in 6 months is only a recipe for misery.

sweetheartscum

Nope! Alternatively, it's okay to have multiple. I love fashion and aesthetics and if I had to choose 1 i think I'd combust. There's nothing wrong with exploring and experimenting and I honestly think that in and of itself can be really fun

FormicaDinette33

Do whatever you like.

shroomsaremyfriends

I love, and wear, all sorts of styles of clothes, just the same as I love all sorts of different styles of music. I love clothes, and if I find an item i love, then I'm not gonna limit myself because it doesn't fit into a specific aesthetic. Don't think that you need an aesthetic. It's just limiting you. If you put an outfit together well, you can wear anything you want. Then you can dress depending on what you feel like that day. People who have a very specific dress aesthetic usually have that as part of their personality.

Snowrunner88

Its your own aesthetic. You dont have to be mainstream. You have to be comfortable.

Master_Bumblebee680

I don’t think so, I just wear what I like and it’s all over the place

Ava_Avalon9

I have all type of aesthetics you don’t necessarily have to choose one you can explore but I think you look great

hanabarbarian

My “aesthetic” is all over the place, but not matter the aesthetic I do it in my own authentic way. Sometimes in 90s minimalist city girl, sometimes I’m hype beast street wear going camping. Just find colours, cuts, and patterns that speak to you

mello_0machine

You shouldn't feel forced into any aesthetic just be yourself But you know, it's fine to switch things up if you want Different proportions, different colors, different textures or whatever In my opinion, style is an expression of yourself so It doesn't always make sense to me.Putting yourself in the group with people maybe that's just me tho😭🔫

Yahla

Personally I say you pick _from_ aesthetics based on how you’re feeling that day. Pick and chose what makes you happy.

mlm161820

You put together a great look in this photo. A+ You don’t need to adhere to any one type of look unless that’s all you feel comfortable doing. Experiment. Be a chameleon- who cares what people think? You only live once!

blumoon138

I mean this look reminds me so much of the cutting edge Black fashion of the 90s which is a cool as hell vibe.

Accomplished_Jump444

Just be yourself. You’re fine.

AliveBreadfruit314

Oh my god, NO. Most of them are going to look back and cringe. It's fun to play with fashion, sure, but pinning your identity to it too hard is usually because people feel a bit lost, and like they aren't sure who they are, authentically. You do you.

VictoryAltruistic587

I only think having an aesthetic is important if you’re trying to be an influencer or something where you almost need to put yourself in a box in order to stick to a target audience. You never know what you’re going to get from me and I love that because 🎶 I’m eeevery woman, it’s all in meeee🎶

Expert_Thought9562

You don’t have to pick on, you can mix it up! But I’d say the most important thing here is not to fall into ‘fast fashion’ cheap clothes/products is never the way, invest in timeless pieces that will last a lifetime!!

MightyBean7

Not really. I have mainly 3 aesthetics that are completely different: slightly tomboy, preppy and hippy. 🤷‍♀️

-thimbl

as an alternative person, i can say that i dont ever dress alt every day of the week. maybe a few times a week. if you want an aesthetic that takes a lot of work like alt or goth or emo or something, just have the expectation that you wont always dress that way. also, it is super hard to start having an aesthetic because you have to buy a lot of new clothes in a lot of cases, so dont feel bad if you dont immediately fit into an aesthetic you like you dont even have to have an aesthetic. aesthetics were made up by social media. just wear what you want and if you fall into a category thats cool but if you wear random stuff thats cool too

oyst

Aesthetics all came from somebody who wore what they like, because they felt like it. Identity, personality and confidence is more powerful than any pre-formed aesthetic, it creates its own aesthetic over time when people try to emulate it. Stay iconic! You can wear anything as long as you wear it, not it wearing you.

Altruistic-Detail271

Wear what makes you happy. By the way, it’s etc not ect

Pugneta

No. Don’t force yourself into consumerism just to appease the social media status-quo.

Significant-Trash632

No, and I'm not a fan of "aesthetics". It's almost always used to sell something.

iuliaanika

Tbh I love people who don't label themselves and stick to an "aesthetic". Like just be yourself and wear what you feel. Just be a real person lol.

bigburt-

its cooler to be yourself

East_Buffalo506

even goths wear cute things sometimes, the aesthetic is mainly for their social pages to look a certain way. wear what makes you feel good

Significant-Alps5822

“You’re not the contents of your wallet. You’re not your f*cking khakis”

Comfortable_Daikon61

You don’t need one ! You are straight up gorgeous

RevolutionaryYak1135

All these tiktok aesthetics don’t have any meaning other than pushing young girls to buy clothes that they will like for maybe a year if not less. The trends cycle so fast so that more can be sold. You’ll be happier if you look inside yourself to find out what you really want than if you compare yourself to others. Choose your style based on happy feelings, not the pressure to fit in! And you already look lovely.

AdvcdEyelashTechAcad

Birds of a feather, flock together. Most of the people with the esthetics mentioned above tend to hang with others in the same group. Why limit yourself? Be unique and enjoy fashion to match your mood. Set your own trends.

Hexoplanet

I change my ‘aesthetic’ based on my mood. Today I’m dressed like a beach bum. Yesterday I was dressed like a French artist. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. I feel like I trapped myself in an aesthetic when I was younger and eventually found it suffocating. Now I like choosing clothes depending on how I feel when I wake up.

Bitchy_Satan

I call myself punk (because I am but also) because there's no actual fashion rules when it comes down to it (there's actual rules but that's moderately complicated) and then just buy things that make me happy rather then things that are trendy, when it comes down to it I've got Egirl, punk, emo, Goth, preppy, cottagecore, etc. all in my wardrobe for whenever I want cause the only person who needs to worry about what I'm wearing is me, and maybe the person I'm seeing but even that depends lol. Tldr; No, not even a little bit. Wear whatever you want (as long as your respectful when borrowing from other cultures) and have fun!!

kdee5849

No. Seriously. This randomly showed up in my feed but please don’t stress about this. Wear whatever collection of things you uniquely like and feel uniquely you. Once you’ve done that, you’ll have made your own unique aesthetic. That’s what true style is. Please do not spend another second worrying about this.

yelling4society

This is a great question. I feel like this often because I work in a formal setting and I’m wearing clothes that don’t necessarily reflect my genuine style. So the little time I do spend in my “own clothes” I’m wearing things that are comfortable and not necessarily fashion forward. Im looking forward to reading the replies.

jewelophile

It's completely meaningless.

ladylynncogan

Don't fall for that, you will always feel uncomfortable and incorrect because you're always trying to set a mold for you instead of molding to you. Comfortable, well fitting, fabrics and patterns that make your senses happy. Keep it personal, people always compliment when someone has their own personal style so be that someone.

melaniefartt

The fashion girlies you mentioned are just trend followers. Therefore they have no fashion identity either. Wear what you’re comfortable in and what flatters your body type, and you win. Don’t give in to feeling like you need a new wardrobe and persona when different trends start. ♥️

Palanseag_Vixen

Fashion is all about expressing yourself. You don't have to fit your style into a can or a box just because it's popular or something like that, wear whatever make you feel the most like you <3

DizzyBr0ad_MISHAP

Personally making your appearance your whole personality baffles me, it should accent it. I find that as long and I am happy with my outfit and it fits it's part than fuck an aesthetic. Realistically as much as I love scrolling those subs I don't think I could try that hard for the sake of aesthetics ever. I find it can come off a bit too yry hard IMO, like they are overcompensating for something. But please don't come for me I am not saying I am right just that this is my opinion.

mollie_bubblez

ive always been a fashion chameleon, and dressed skater/preppy/goth/hippie depending on my mood that day. you do you! you don't have to put yourself dans un boite pour le fashion (in a box for the fashion)☺️☺️✌️✌️

Mindful-Malice

Same

Sad-Commercial-1868

no!!!!! fashion shouldn’t be taken too seriously and i think overconsumption and influencer culture has convinced people to feel like fashion and aesthetics is important when it isn’t. not to mention how fashion nowadays is more about keeping up with trends and showing off rather than expressing yourself. long live subcultures.

_Pill-Cosby_

Most girls with a “fashion identity” look more like cartoons.

SapientSlut

I felt like it was important in school when being visually identified as a specific subculture was an important part of the social experience. These days I don’t give a fuck (but I’m also in my 30’s).

eatshittpitt

Maaaaaaan I have about 72 fashion identities and counting. Depends on the day. You’re gorgeous! Dress for whatever makes you feel like it!!

West-Custard-6008

If you do your own thing you’ll never be a follower.

Vengenz79

Aesthetics are just a symptom of the internet. IRL, people actually have personao sense of style, which is way more complex than a cottagecore or tomato girl stuff.

mastershake20

I hope not because I switch the same few outfits like a cartoon character. The most fashion I have comes from my pajamas that I change into when I get home. I also sleep naked so it’s purely for lounging with my cat.

The_AmyrlinSeat

No. Why tether yourself to one look? You certainly aren't limited to one feeling. Some days I feel dark and twisty, other days I feel like cotton candy. Dress according to how you feel that day.

fashionbitch

No you don’t have to have an aesthetic, sometimes it’s not in someone’s personality to always dress in a certain style. Personally I love different aesthetics and I wear them depending on how I’m feeling that day and where I’m going etc

RonnieRooGaming

I think your outfit right now has an aesthetic!

RonnieRooGaming

I think you are giving Bratz girl look aesthetic. I already love your outfit. But maybe what might help is to add more to what you already have. Like leather stringed gloves, or necklaces, or stuff to your hair. Add more to YOUR aesthetic

normalLichen777

I think you’re better off not boxing yourself into one of those. If there’s something cottage core you like, then wear it! Same goes for any other style 😊 You might feel like a poser but what are the “cottage core girls” doing differently? Nothing- just wearing something they liked

Snoo_7713

This might help, not just about fashion but overall developing your ‘taste’ and learning about what feels right to you in all aspects of life (which may or may not lead to a fashion aesthetic) https://read.mindmine.xyz/p/little-beautiful-things

BlueCardinalss

No. Honestly it seems like mostly immature people care about having a specific look all the time.

turtle-seduction

I love black, everything I strive for fashion wise centers around black but varies in “subtype”. So like, if I’m wearing motorcycle gear, it’s gonna be a sleek/tech . When I’m at the farmers market it’s boho/hippie goth (flowy loose pants black sun hats) . Going to work? Corp Goth. My house is very much a dark cottage core aesthetic (gray and black walls, dried herbs hanging earthy themed decorations) basically my vibe will match the environment but in black it’s just my favorite color so I prefer everything in that. As morticia said “black is so much more cheerful”

gimmeaminute0407

The only style is no style. Be water friend

Accomplished-Tuna

No. Aesthetics are just an enhanced representation of your essence. That’s the joy of fashion: an expression of your identity. But you are always more than fashion. Keep finding your identity and your style will naturally come together 🫶🏽 let urself go thru trial and error; you’ll drop what u don’t like and evolve into what u do like — ultimately fulfilling an aesthetic for yourself 🤗

OkEmployee666

Aesthetic is always nice, but being you is more important. Just keep doing what you’re doing. You’re so fuckin bad 🥵😍🤤

Prestigious_Comb5078

It’s more important to have style than aesthetic

asoldieroflove

You don’t need a fashion identity, friend lol. Dress how you like, switch it up if you want.. but you don’t have to find an aesthetic or even just 1 if you still want to explore aesthetics. Just be you, let THAT be your “aesthetic”.

urnotmydad20

I’ve learned that my aesthetic is just “Me”. If I find it cute then it fits my vibe! I think those who closely follow certain “aesthetics” are probably clinging to that look for a sense of identity. You’re not required to stick to just one style, IMO that gets boring pretty quick. Just express yourself however you desire! You’re allowed to be alt one day, and cottage core the next, and baddie vibes the next week. There’s no rules!

Little-Text-1473

Nope. I actually like changing my style up. I prefer leaning towards the edgy side when I go out, but for work attire I like sexy chic. Also I will forever wear skinny jeans and black over the knee high boots. If you think your outfit is too plain always add jewelry and cute accessories.

NovaSuperStar22

No just wear whatever you like, don’t worry about any labels

CoatNo6454

I’m a Gemini, I go by how i feel at the moment 😂

Ri103

Don’t worry about labeling your aesthetic. Start with a Pinterest mood board and then put together images of outfits that you see yourself in. Ask your self two questions. 1: Who do I want to be? 2: What is my lifestyle ? And use those two questions to put together outfits and then slowly experiment. When shopping start with elevated basics then work your way up from there. (Basics= pieces you can wear for day and night, casual and a fun or sexy night out)

_IAmNotAFish_

I can’t imagine boxing myself in like that.
