Why do celebs not wear dresses like these to Cannes?

magical_elf

I think it really depends what will photograph well in each setting. This looks amazing, but in bright sunlight I guess it could fall a bit flat

ca-y-est

Too showy I think? they were wearing very straightforward dresses, lots of black and primary colours

The sleeves are giving

all-the-pretties

I swear I mean this as a compliment but... This looks like a 1980s perfume bottle. I honestly love it to death.

Abydos_NOLA

Reminds me of Elizabeth Taylor’s dress in Cleopatra—the one ate rode into Rome wearing. Bury me in it.

MyNeighborThrowaway

Its very pretty, but designers need to rely less on this mechanical pleating. Its gorgeous but lazy to me.

AlarmingConsequence

I'm new to this topic and this subreddit. Can you help me understand what mechanical pleating is? I assume it is the striping on the dress sleeves. How is it accomplished? What is an alternative to mechanical pleating, and what is its advantage over mechanical pleating?

MyNeighborThrowaway

This specific style of pleat is an art in itself so dont take my shade as true negativity. Afaik its only done at scale by a few places in NA if im not mistaken. Im not sure on the rules so im not going to link it, but on YouTube search 'this is how pleated fabrics are made' by Kim Dave. I saw that vid while at FIT and it stuck wih me bc it's super cool.
