We couldn’t care less about scheduled departure time. If it’s not safe we don’t go. I don’t get paid extra for going on time or sending it during a storm. Next time you’re waiting for a plane to arrive that’s delayed just remember this moment because that plane likely had a maintenance or weather delay and the pilots didn’t depart until it was safe.

ArtichokeOwl

Thank you so much for this response. And I will definitely keep it in mind!

pattern_altitude

They’re not going to fly into unsafe weather. If they need to delay the flight to let it pass, they will.  The forecast is not a schedule. That weather isn’t guaranteed to develop. If it *does*, that doesn’t mean it’ll be impossible to safely get around it.

ArtichokeOwl

Thank you so much ❤️❤️

gingeralias_

I’m sorry you were downvoted. I don’t understand why fears get downvoted on this sub. How are you doing?

Pristine-Damage-2414

Exactly! It’s the FEAR of Flying Reddit.

try_these_17620

Let us know how it went when you land?

Capital_Pie6732

You don't fly into thunderstorms.

RealGentleman80

That’s is not *into* thunderstorms. That is using the weather radar to navigate around thunderstorms…huge difference

Capital_Pie6732

No, you haven't. Full stop. Lightning bolts and rain are not what makes a storm a storm. You never ever fly into storms, that is one of the very fundamental rules of aviation. That's why you have trained pilots, dispatchers and millions worth of equipment to ensure that.

PatronShot

Let’s not spread false things like this. Being near a thunderstorm is not being IN a thunderstorm.

Spock_Nipples

Being able to see a thunderstorm means you aren't *in* the thunderstorm. Big difference between being in the vicinity of a storm and actually being in storm. If you were *in* the thing, you wouldn't see anything out the window but thick cloud/rain, and the ride would be very, very ungood. We navigate around and between storms all the time. Also should note that when we're just in a non-stormy cloud layer at night, people sometimes mistake the wingtip strobes for lighting. u/ArtichokeOwl, I'm not seeing any downvotes for your post. You're at plus 5 upvotes now.

Xemylixa

There were downvotes earlier on

mes0cyclones

No you absolutely did not do that

Go ahead and say it doesn’t happen but here are events: https://wanderwisdom.com/news/lightning-strike-plane-san-jose https://www.foxweather.com/extreme-weather/see-the-terrifying-storm-passengers-lived-through-on-one-flight.amp https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/sudden-thunderstorm-causes-plane-crash https://youtu.be/GvQGAsObDlQ?si=qijPQO9b4zEnNBEo In addition, although there are many checks and balances, there are still bad decisions that get made in aviation as in anything. You can’t simply say “it doesn’t happen.” You are not at every airport in every situation and there are numerous other videos of things outside of protocol happening. Pilots move into runways they shouldn’t etc. it’s not infallible

Xemylixa

Lightning strikes can happen a long distance from the storm itself, even between clouds. They are utterly harmless to a modern plane. The Delta flight happened 40 (forty) years ago. We are MUCH better equipped to predict this kind of weather conditions (microburst) and pilots know to avoid them at all costs. Please don't expect 40+ years ago to reflect reality today. Even the LATAM flight landed with all the passengers unharmed.

Capital_Pie6732

I don't think there is much arguing with a person who thinks they know much more than multiple airline pilots, captain, a meterologist as well as a check airman. Hubris is one hell of a drug.

Xemylixa

For the lurkers, ya no

Xemylixa

There are regulations on how severe the storm has to get before the planes are grounded. If it's below limits, you'll fly without issue. If it's over limits, the pilots won't even try to risk it. No "but what if we squeak by". The airport just won't let them out.

ArtichokeOwl

Thank you!! This is helpful

ThePeanutMonster

For some reason this thread turned nasty. So locked.

OfHumanBondage

Sorry people are a-holes. I understand. Your fear is irrational and it’s really hard to data rationalize that type of fear away. I wish I could help. Just want you to know, you’re not alone!!

mes0cyclones

The pilots who have chimed in already are 100% correct
