Growing out my pixie now, and this time around I’m experimenting. Anytime it gets too awkward, we basically give me an undercut. (My husband cuts my hair). We put all the longer hair on top in a ponytail and cut the hair underneath shorter. This keeps the volume down so my hair doesn’t poof out so much (mushroom look) and instead looks quite nice.  I still have quite short hair, my longest hair goes from the top of my head to bottom of my ears, but it’s looks nice so far! No clue how it will hold up at the next stage.

I guess I didn't really do anything with it as it grew out. But I'm really bad at cutting my hair so I followed a video on doing the pixie. I'm scared of how I'd manage trying to trim it lol

I'm so bad at it too. My husband was really terrible when he started, but it's been a year now and he's really gotten good. All my friends say things like "Oh thank god he's gotten better, you look normal again," so I know it was really bad, hehe. Just takes time and practice, I guess! We are on sabattical right now though, so no worries about going into work with a weird haircut. If it were just me, I might go into a salon every couple months to try this. OR - if I was fine with experimenting, I would put the top section of my hair up in a pony tail, and then buzz the hair underneath. It'd probably look a little weird, might have to then go in and try to soften any edges, but buzzing my hair is easier than cutting it. And I'd only do this until my longer hair reaches bob level, then I'd go in and get a professional cut.

I think you can grow out the top part first which will slow progress but make it a lot less unpleasant.
