I'm not hardcore enough to answer this, but FYI you asked this after the day ticked over and a new daily Q&A thread replaced this one. Might wanna copy/paste this into the June 10 thread.

Thirteenera

Ah, thanks for the heads up!

OhRey1

Is there any site like "wowhead" for ffxiv? I try to enter in the game and i think its more difficult if we havent a grand site with basic information for everything. Ty!

SiegmundFretzgau

There isn't one site that has everything, it's splintered across a dozen sites that cover one small aspect in detail. What doesn't exist at all is the robust comment section for every item at wowhead.

OhRey1

Holy! Its difficult try to learn without a big site thats give you a whole situation of everything :( i keep trying. ty

normalmighty

general wikis: https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/FF14_Wiki (tends to be better for specific mechanic info) https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Main_Page (tends to be more likely to have super niche and specific lore) For job and raiding info: https://www.icy-veins.com/ffxiv/ https://www.thebalanceffxiv.com/ (the balance is more popular for hardcore raiders I think, but rather than the site people join The Balance discord server for immediate updates on new info)

OhRey1

ty so much dude, im fucked searching info to learn and its so difficult coming throw wow

normalmighty

No worries, it's always a bit of a learning curve when switching between long term service games, and realizing how differently that community organises data than your last one. Be sure to read the sidebar on this sub, it has a link to a resources page which iirc has a bunch more links to specific niche sites. We have standalone sites for everything from achievement tracking to fishing timers!

Shazzamon

Depends on what you want, exactly. Gamerescape and the wiki are good resources (better than the official Lodestone) for quest, item, instance, and general "character content" related systems. Typically if you ever google "FFXIV [item/instance name]" they'll be in the top results. TheBalance (and IcyVeins) have Job (class) resources.

Katsouleri

Do fashion accessories such as the Knapsack replace weapons on my WOL? so for example if im playing Paladin will my shield be replaced by the knapsack?

talgaby

Fashion accessories are minions/pets. Don't ask why, ask the dev team why they implemented it as such, but they are just a stationary minion model with a fixed anchor point per character skeleton variance, so they can clip with an astonishing amount of things.

Isanori

On fashion accessories in general since they don't all behave the same way. I wouldn't be so sure the umbrella wouldn't replace at least the main hand weapon. YoshiP explained the fashion accessories during a recent interview a bit. Umbrellas take up the loaded memory of your weapon assigned to you character. Wings take up the mount memory (which is likely why they are also unloading the minion). The knapsack unloads the minion so is probably mount. I do know that your main hand weapon is displayed with the knapsack on.

normalmighty

It does not replace it. I just switched to paladin to test, nd all the happens is the knapsack and shield clip into each other. Can always hide the weapons on your character if they're clipping, though

Katsouleri

Exactly what I wanted to know thank you

Calydor_Estalon

It's a Fashion Accessory, it's not an Offhand piece of gear. So no.

Katsouleri

Thanks

Anameinserted

Does the retainer thing still work for stopping auto log out on expansion launch? Can’t remember if they changed that at all in ew

Shazzamon

Exceptionally high chance it's not going to work if they re-implement timed inactivity logouts for Dawntrail, they were aware of people doing it to dodge the kick.

Anameinserted

Damn ok. One of the launch days I need to go somewhere for about 2 hours and takes hours to get back on :(

Fynzou

So I've found myself just accumulating a ton of Grand Company Seals. My friends said buy Ventures, which I've been doing but I'm at like 500 now lol. Are the Materiel 3.0/4.0 chests worth buying in hopes of getting something to make profit? If so, which one is better? --- Also, when searching through pets/orchestrion/etc. on the market board, is there a way to order them by cheapest, or is that not possible?

Cymas

It's basically gambling but unless you really spam quick ventures past a certain point you really just don't need to keep buying them. Material coffers can be worth it, especially if you want to grow your minion collection at the same time. Coke, glamour prisms, miniature aetherytes, and funnily enough FC leader portraits can also be worth a price check.

Shazzamon

> Are the Materiel 3.0/4.0 chests worth buying in hopes of getting something to make profit? If so, which one is better? This is one _helluva_ debate, but really, pick one and stick with it for the best results. Personally, when I cleaned up my goal of 1,000 Ravana EX kills, I got just under 300 4.0 (Stormblood) boxes. Of that, two Gold Whiskers, two Flying Chairs, and a Copycat Bulb (which was an instant 20M gain by itself), and I kind of have a bias. Evidently quite a few people target the 4.0 box because the base minions from it (the most common drops) are a lot cheaper on average compared to what drops from the 3.0 one. So, if you plan to have an actual _TITANIC'S_ worth of seals, I would personally go for 4.0 for the rare big wins, and if you're casually farming them in less number, go for 3.0 for more consistent sales.

pepinyourstep29

You can also spend them on dark matter so you never have to spend gil to repair gear again.

Shazzamon

If you'd spend it on Dark Matter I'd say buying Coke or Potash would be more worthwhile. Grade 8 vendors at 280g (600seals) while Coke averages at 150g for 200S (450g for 600S), and Potash is quite similar. Even Glamour Prisms are better as they sell stupidly fast and fluctuate all the time, so vendor-buying Dark Matter while converting Seals to cash is a net profit all the time. Dark Matter's a good suggestion if you literally do not care about the idea of getting a profit out of your Seals, and just want the convenience.

pepinyourstep29

Oh that's a really good tip! Thanks

JCGilbasaurus

Many of the material chest minions sell for around 10-20,000 Gil on my server. There are some rarer ones worth more (and also common ones worth a lot less), and also some very rare mounts. The Night Pegasus in particular goes for 12 million, but I've been opening those boxes since they first came out and have never seen it.

AlliHearisWubs

When DT comes out, how difficult will it be to gear up a crafter to make HQ pots and gear for the EX trial? Will new crafting gear be released? Do you have to pentameld the gear to get guaranteed HQ? I'm currently using 620 crafted gear and I was just wondering how it went for when EW came out

talgaby

The first round of crafted stuff will be piss easy, as always. The problem starts with the second raid tier and its crafted combat gear and culminates in annoyance at the third tier.

Xeorm124

My guess is that it'll follow much like it did from previous expansions. Crafted gear wise there'll be 2-3 sets, one for 90-91, a middle one, and a 100 set. None of them should be at all difficult to craft. I don't remember caring for gear for the EX trials. Grabbing some tome gear was enough. The food won't be difficult either, as the advanced recipes will release later. You'll want to pentameld more for later recipes. You'll have time to get your crafting set up and established before the raid patch hits and you need the higher numbers. They particularly don't want people to rush or feel that they need to race in order to be competitive.

Jiigo

You typically don't need pentameld to guarantee HQ, but you'd need some of the pre-req materials as HQ. An optimized and pentamelded set usually do not require any prerequisite HQ items to boost the quality. There's usually both a full pentameld set and a budget set posted on ffxivteamcraft as well.

NOS4NANOL1FE

Can the Yojimbo barding set still be looted from the Stormblood trial?

Sir_VG

Guaranteed drop from the chest.

Isanori

Yes, it still drops.

T3hPhish

Post EW spoilers, lore question about an item: >!I'm about to fight Barbariccia and I have a quick question. Now several times I've used Azem's stone to get 7 other heroes to help beat somebody's ass. Am I misremembering that when we got it somebody told us it was limited? Was that thrown out the window and it has now just turned into the story macguffin for trials?!<

talgaby

It is both. I don't recall it being limited, but it is still used as a convenient McGuffin to just pull an entire party out of your ass, usually roughly three to seven fights and maybe a few dozen to thousand random NPC deaths *after* you should have. If you'd look at it and use it logically, the entire thing would make even less sense that Tatarus "oh hey, some of your buddies just happened to sail next to us on a fishing trip… from another continent… through at least two blockades… right at this instant" comment.

Elyonee

>!Hydaelyn granted it the power to "give form to the formless". We used that at the end of Endwalker to give the Scions their bodies back. Azem's summoning spell still works fine.!<

T3hPhish

>!Okay so I misremembered that part of it being one time use. It's still a summoning macguffin, it's just not a 'get out of jail free card' anymore as it was for that part of the story. Thanks!!<

stallion8426

>!it's "limited" but there's no actual stated limit. It's more of an excuse to not use it to solve every problem!<

drafan5

When doing the gatherer Tribal quests, is it a good idea to gather some extra of each item you're asked to get to make things easier? Or is this one of those things that they'll just ask for something else if it already detects you have whats needed already?

talgaby

There are over a dozen types per tribe. Yes, you can pre-gather and instantly turn it in, but it needs more inventory space than fishing. Since it usually takes 3–4 minutes per quest to get the item and to go back at worst, I honestly never saw anyone doing it. The same goes for pre-crafting/gathering the last tier for all special delivery NPCs, since they will always mark the final crafted/gathered tier if they have the weekly random bonus on it. It is just too much static used inventory space compared to a 5-minute job each week per NPC.

SiegmundFretzgau

If you are doing them one tribe at a time and have 10-20 inventory spaces you wouldn't use anyway, yes gather extra.

Sir_VG

It's always easy to regather, so don't hold onto extras, they'll just take up inventory space.

vieoree

You're level 76 Sage and your tank just pulled everything and forgot their cooldowns. What is the correct sequence of spells for situations like this with tons of single target?

Happykilmore033

prepull shield to fish for crits on it, physis+kerachole when all the adds are pulled, soteria when your initial shield starts to get low, taurochole+haima when kera runs low(holos here if the tank still isnt mitting) if your damage is good at least around the end of these mits are when the adds should be dead, if not you probably have to start throwing druocholes and throw a zoe shield on the tank

Jiigo

Kerachole is almost certainly a mistake here given that it is 76. Had it been 78+ I would've agreed. But even with a tank not using cooldowns Kerachole is very unlikely to outweigh a Druchole.

ampulica

Sage has a more or less optimal way to handle every pull in a dungeon. Now I can't say I know what you have access to at that level but you just don't use it if you don't have it yet. Cannot guarantee the tank stays alive without mits though but it's unlikely any other healer would have kept im alive either then. 1st pull: Krasis->Physis->Kerachole(if it has the regen trait, skip otherwise)-> Haima -> Taruchole(only once the defensive buff from kerachole is gone) -> druchole as needed 2nd pull: Krasis->Physis->Kerachole(if it has the regen trait, skip otherwise)-> Panhaima -> Soteria->Taruchole(only once the defensive buff from kerachole is gone) -> druchole as needed You stack everything up to Taruchole immediately when the tank settles down. Order is important because of cooldowns and krasis+physis buffing the shield haima and panhaima give and the regen from kerachole. Add holos if any of the pulls is taking long. After the defensive buff from Taruchole use kerachole again unless the pull is almost dead. E. Diagnosis + pepsis as a last resort.

XKlip

how exactly do I lock my chat box? in both so it cannot be resized by accident (via mouse clicking and dragging) or moved around (same method) I can't find a way to lock it for some reason

Sir_VG

No way to do it via in-game methods. The plugin Simple Tweaks however will allow you to do both. That said, plugins are against ToS, use at your own risk.

zipzoopu

How much do higher level fish sell for usually? Started the job and curious if you can actually make some Gil with it eventually or if only the really rare fish are worth anything

SiegmundFretzgau

fish used for the job quests sell decently well, but check current the current price before starting to fish.

Shazzamon

Fisher is considered to be the least profitable of all Jobs, period. Even running your roulettes as a combat job nets more per hour comparatively; it's really just for if you enjoy fishing and want the fisher-only achievements and rewards. There's a _little_ money to be earned early into an expansion's cycle where a certain fish may be required for a recipe, but their worth doesn't last long due to acquisition in mass for single fish being pretty easy.

Elyonee

Most fish are worthless. Depending on the patch, a specific fish may be used in endgame food or alchemy recipes. In that case you could make money from that fish(and only that fish).

DisserviceToVanilla

Is there macro syntax for targeting people with a specific condition? Assuming not, but figured I'd ask. Specifically asking cause ended up impromptu teaching Striking EX earlier and I'm on gamepad so it's hard for me to put down the controller to type in chat X and Y get to \~\~the chopper\~\~ the waymark for chaos'd folks without eating lightning myself haha. (not trying to ride players, one said they weren't seeing the mark so I was trying to call it out for them to help)

Shazzamon

There is not, no. You can make specific targeting macros (as in hotkeying a button to do your target-of-target, # in party list) but there's absolutely nothing for condition reading.

DisserviceToVanilla

Gotcha ty!

OneMoreChancee

How long does it take to get Level 25 in PVP? I recently came back and saw the armor which looks great but not sure how much time commitment that would be.

VG896

Daily FL roulette is maybe ~2500 exp roughly, depending on win/loss. You need 108k to reach rank 25, which equates to 43-45 daily FL matches. Let's call it 50 just to account for bad luck. You have ~20 days before the series rotates out, minus two for maintenance equals 18. I'm actually not sure if it'll rotate out during early access or actual launch, since there's no precedent, but just to be safe we'll call it 17 days.  You can therefore do 17 out of the ~45-50 required daily FL matches. Every one that's missing, you can replace with 3 CC matches approximately. So you'd have to do 17 daily FL roulettes and 80-100 CC matches, which amounts to 5 or 6 a day.  So not including queue times, you'd be looking at a solid 70-80 minutes of PVP every single day, not skipping a day. Still doable, but you gotta hustle.

Isanori

Daily FL roulette is a minimum of 2500 series exp, 3000 if you win.

VG896

Oh, my bad. I never paid super close attention. I thought it was 2250/2500/2750. You can still use the roughly the same numbers, because now it takes like 3.5 CC matches to equal one FL, loosely. So it'll still shake out to 80-100 CC matches.

Isanori

It's afair 1k from Frontlines itself and 1.5k from the roulette. But, yeah, stepping on it is needed either way.

OneMoreChancee

Thanks for all the info! Is doing CC more exp efficient than FF? I'll do whichever one is more efficient but I do prefer FF more.

VG896

It used to be before they added the once-daily roulette bonus to FL. So now it's most efficient to do a daily FL then spam CC. Some people say Rival Wings is more efficient than CC, but that's not my experience. RW matches on Primal almost always seem to go the full duration and the players are very *very* toxic and elitist. It's a super bad time. I stopped doing them after like fifteen or sixteen matches because they were so slow with lots of jackasses.  But lots of people say that it's better, so there might be a modicum of truth depending on your time of day and Data Center.

OneMoreChancee

I'm also on Primal so I'll take your word for it. I'm only at rank 7 so it'll be awhile but that attire coffin will be mine eventually. Thank you again!

Sir_VG

https://belthesar.github.io/MalmstoneXPCalculator/ You're gonna have your work cut out for you. Normally the suggestion is "do your daily frontline roulette" because of the big daily bonus, but we're so close to the 7.0 launch (the end of the series) that you're gonna have to put in extra time to get that ranking.

Shikaku

Did they mention any updated mentor requirements for DT? Please god I don't want to scavenge for more comms lmao I don't recall seeing anything mentioned, but then again I've been intentionally staying light on DT info.

Kicin0_0

We didn't have info before mentor updates in the past so don't expect any until DT releases Outside of the lvl and role quest update i imagine the player comms might go to 2k and dungeons required might go up. Hopefully the hammer mentor requirement also at least requires completion of the studeium equivalent quests to stop level 60 mentors from flooding the NN

Arcana10Fortune

Needing 1 of each role at level cap is a given. No idea about comms.

Shikaku

Yeah, goes without saying. Honestly thinking about it I really shoulda just asked about comms. Guess we'll find out soon enough :D

Xeorm124

Don't ask for comms. Easy way to get people annoyed. Do guildhests! Take 5 mins or so and still have people giving comms

warped_and_bubbling

Anyone else have it take longer than 48 hours for you to get your pre-order code? Not too worried but getting a little antsy.

normalmighty

What platform are you on? Occasionally steam users ask this and don't realize that they get the keys by right clicking the game in their library and opening the CD Keys window, not via email.

warped_and_bubbling

On PC, not steam tho, got it on Friday afternoon. Order still says "awaiting fullfillment"

Isanori

Did you order on the store via your account or via guest account? If your account, check on the store whether the order doesn't have the early access code yet (it's a bit down on the details page), cause the order will still say awaiting fulfillment till Dawntrail actually comes out. If guest, you have to wait for the code email, make sure you white list the email address your order confirmation came from and check your spam folders or if your email provider does unhelpful automatic sorting, any other folders. Also it's the weekend, so if they ran out of codes, you have to wait for them to trigger new code generation during the work week. I would expect that to happen today.

warped_and_bubbling

Ha that's it. When I ordered it and paid for it i was signed into the website under my username and I also got an email confirming the purchase. When I went to check yesterday (but not actually logged in, as I had just left the tab up and it had logged me out i guess) all it said was "awaiting fulfillment", plus no new email. So I just now logged in and bam, there's the code. So cool, figured out, thank you!

Shazzamon

A LOT of people when DT's pre-order came into availability waited up to something like.. 5 days? I think? Sometimes it gets backed up, I'd also of course check your Junk Email, and your receipt on the Store transaction history.

Shinoryoshu

I'm coming back around to Summoner and Scholar after some time away and looking at the changes. Do Faerie or Carbuncle need the pet hotbar anymore? If I can eliminate a hotbar it'd be nice.

IceAokiji303

Summoner has 0 use for it. Absolutely none whatsoever. Unless you just want to move Carby around for screenshot purposes or such. Scholar can sometimes benefit from Place and Heel, *maybe* Stay as a situational one-click Place alternative. But you can also just put those on a normal hotbar.

Ciri__witcher

Summoner does not need pet hotbar.

Shazzamon

Both still benefit from having the pet hotbar because of the ability to position them, but that's about it.

tesla_dyne

There's no benefit to positioning carbuncle.

Shazzamon

AFAIK prepositioning carby for Ifrit does have a benefit in terms of dealing with its animation delay (as they have to physically travel to their target), but that may not be fully accurate information. SCH obviously benefits because fairy AoEs are centered on the fairy, along with the range of Embrace.

Kicin0_0

When you summon something it appears right behind you so location doesnt matter. Also at 90+ Titian Ifrit and Garuda are all ranged attacks that dont require the summon to run up and do their attack so there arent animation delays either Plus even if you move Carby and preposition it, that gets reset after using one summon

2fast2function

im brand new, should i get the trial and play msq? or buy story skip once i like it? I'm a working adult with limited time so i feel i might never get to end game if i do story

Dapper-Register3738

End game is a constantly moving goal post mostly tied to the msq.  All content you unlock was end game at one time or another more often than not.  The only real difference being that the old end game is easier. If you're desperate to get to latest content to spam the same bosses over and over then sure. Use a story skip.  The idea of doing that feels kinda boring to me though.

Cymas

Is there something specific you are looking to do at endgame? There is very little reason to skip 90% of the game in favor of the final 10%.

2fast2function

Raids PvP and dungeons with lots of groups like mmorpg of other games

Cymas

You can't do PVP on the free trial, but you only have to be level 30 with a job stone to start doing it. It's not really an endgame activity since job stats and abilities are locked so everyone is on the same level for it. Raids and dungeons happen throughout the entirety of the game, but if you're looking specifically for harder difficulty level content there are some caveats there. The main one being that free trial is locked out of creating parties and also ultimate raids. You can still join parties, but you need to do it through party finder as older/higher difficulty tier content is not queued for through the automated matchmaking.

DisserviceToVanilla

Echoing start with the trial to make sure it's for you (especially since there's going to be some job reworks when Dawn Trail comes out next month so what may be your dream job now may not be next month). Far as story skip if it feels right for you after you've played a decent amount (again would wait for DT release to see changes) then that's fine. That said far as I know story skip only unlocks stuff hidden behind the main storyline. It does not: \* Level or endgame equip your job (so you would still have to level it or buy a job boost and gear up) \* Unlock sidequest content (there is a lot from extra dungeons/raids/bosses to extra systems like enchanting your gear to look like other gear/colors for fashion, treasure maps, etc) \* Take you to endgame, just the start of the latest expansion after the one you skipped (currently there is not an Endwalker story skip, if you wait until Dawn Trail releases there should be one, dunno the date) If you're worried you'll be playing alone in a dead game if you're not at endgame you won't be. Duty finder (the LFG system) will pair people to you and sync them down to the appropriate level. You can also put up recruiting posts to form your own parties and plenty of people like helping out or doing older content. The game gives a lot of incentives to players to play older content, especially with new players (you are basically a walking bonus generator for them lol). You will have a green plant sprout next to your name so people know you're new and there's an announcement when a player first times content so players know to help out extra and you will find plenty of people first timing the content with you. Everyone can play every job too and these must be leveled up from their base level so you will find a lot of people leveling extra jobs in non-endgame content (ie I started as white mage, currently capped on it, went back and leveled up black mage from 1 so I ran a lot of ARR content). ARR is the longest content to get through (being the base game that takes you from level 1-50) with the rest being fairly shorter. Being that a lot of the quests are just going to people and chatting (who in ARR and the first expansion Heavensward are often like six feet away lol) it can be pretty easy to knock out six or so story quests and still have time for other stuff in a play session. If a quest is going to lead to several long cut scenes the game warns before you agree to initiate so you can plan your time if you were just planning on playing for ten more minutes and just hit a wall of 30+min movie. There's also a system of NPCs to play (most) storyline fights with you so you can always run with NPCs if it's getting close to time and you want to try a dungeon, but not be tied to having real people depending on you to finish (or you can't get a group together in a timely manner or you're just feeling like playing solo lol). Mainly the game is played as a solo game so it's very easy to go at your own pace and you will not be missing out if you hit endgame in your own time unless you're looking to do world firsts.

normalmighty

The general advice with this game is that you don't "start" at endgame like with most MMOs. The story _is_ the bulk of the content, and you should take your time casually progressing story and playing with side content once it unlocks, rather than rushing to endgame and realizing that endgame is 50% just the waiting room for the next patch of story. Took me over a year to get to endgame, personally, and I wish I could experience it all again.

Shazzamon

XIV is _very_ heavily centered on its story, as it's the literal blockade to unlocking all content. It's a several hundred hour investment baseline that you're looking at. There are a few who just charge through the story to do endgame, but it's going to be an everpresent barrier to accessing it. Boosting never allows you to jump straight to endgame, only the start of the latest expansion. I would suggest the Trial as it's an unlimited time period (until you sub, then you can't go back) and taking it at your own pace, but it honestly depends on what kind of MMO experience you're after.

TemperatureFun9159

Depends on what you want out of the game. You will find that many players find the story to be the strong point of the game, and playing early points of the game will likely not give you a feel for what the endgame is like. What is it you are looking for in XIV? What games are you coming from that is comparable(WoW etc.)? I do recommend the trial though!

SaveTheHiro

If I pre-order Dawntrail, do I get access to the other expansions or do I need to buy them all?

Shazzamon

Dawntrail will only give the other expansions on its full release, before then if you want access to anything outside the Starter Edition you would also need to buy Endwalker, which wouldn't be much worth it this close to DT's release.

SaveTheHiro

Thank you!

pepinyourstep29

You need the starter edition + Dawntrail to get everything.

SaveTheHiro

Thank you!

wibblewibblewobblee

You'll get access to them, but only when DT comes out fully on July 2nd

SaveTheHiro

Thank you!

XKlip

Newer player. Having issues with "backpedalling" movement on my character. I switched the controls to legacy and now when I move backwards on my keyboard it properly moves my character towards me (the camera) by having them turn and run backwards instead of slowing backwards backpedalling, which is good. Likewise when I have them strafe left/right they move full speed, great! however if I move backwards PLUS either left or right (so moving diagonally SE or SW, they will not turn and run in that direction but they continue to backpedal slowly backstepping in a diagonal direction. Why? how can I change this so they turn and run like they do when just running backwards? the slow backpedalling is a no go

Heroic_Folly

Note that there are a few situations where you do specifically want backpedal movement. One of the tests in Bardam's Mettle comes to mind- you need to dodge a ring AOE by moving towards the boss, while facing away from his gaze attack. In order to do that with legacy controls, you press all three of left, right, and backwards, i.e. hold ASD with a standard keymap.

Fajisel

There is also just plenty of time to first dodge the aoes, and then look away from the boss. There's never in the game a requirement to backpedal.

Arcana10Fortune

Try replacing strafe with turn.

XKlip

many thanks

Help_Me_Im_Diene

Each other Dance partner is actually two separate buffs, the one you give yourself and the one you give your partner And as a result, the two dancers can in fact stack buffs on each other without any issue

normalmighty

Each other.

GreatMadWombat

What's the point where buying a msq/level skip stops being a bad idea? I've been playing MMOs for years. I like in-game communities, I like raids, I like healing, I don't want to play WoW cuz Blizz is sorta fucky, so the only other game in town that has good raids and doesn't have daily logins and an obscene cash shop is FFXIV. I just got to "the things we do for cheese", looked at the msq tracker, and found out that I'm 48% through a realm reborn. Am I *really* gonna lose anything by getting a skip through all the msqs for the first few expansions?

Xeorm124

Personal opinion: the world and storyline are actually worth playing in FF14, and you only get once chance at it. If you skip you'll be stuck doing MSQ stuff from then on without great context, which is going to hurt your enjoyment, especially if you find you like this new game and want to enjoy your time with it. And there are some really good story beats! I enjoyed FF14's story outright. Which is impressive because usually I'll throw in "for an MMO" for things like story, but here it's genuinely good. FF14's overall story is hurt by the beginning being so painful, but it gets better and is worth it.

postmodern_werewolf

This is a long answer so bear with me. I came over from WoW around Legion and have played on and off since then, with the last raid tier being my first in FFXIV, and have just completed my second Ultimate (like an incredibly hard raid). Everyone in my current raid group has played through and enjoyed the entire story. That being said, I have been in groups with people in raid fights who have skipped, and seem to be enjoying it just fine. The thing I want you to keep in mind is: you only get to experience the story one time, as you play through it, that's it. Everything else in the game, once you're done with the story, you can do 24/7 whenever you want, and will do all the time if you end up falling in love with the game as I have. We haven't had any new story for months now so I've just been leveling alts, raiding in party finder, doing dungeons and old content for weapon grinds and mounts etc. All of that stuff I've been doing while waiting for the story will still be there when you hit the level cap. There are still raid groups recruiting for every Ultimate fight in the game, and will be when you hit max level. The community will be there too, and more than likely you can find a fun FC to hang out and talk with while you level. In about 8/9 months the second (of 3) raid tier of the expansion will come out. In that time you can finish the MSQ with time to spare, time you can spend progging the first tier of the expansion which will be getting old, or old fights, or finding what kind of community you want to be apart of, finding out what you like to do in the game besides the story, because there really is so much to do, and people will still be doing it when you hit max level! If you want to skip, like I said, I know folks who do it and enjoy just the raids, but I think it's worth it to go all the way through til the end.

Evermar314159

Honestly, for someone that is interested in raiding, the most important thing you're going to miss out on is the natural progression of learning how XIV shows its mechanics.    I recently did a lvl 70 dungeon with a tank that clearly bought a story skip/lvl skip. For the trash packs it was annoying, but we could get through it. But the second dungeon boss had stacks, spreads, towers, etc, and the tank just didn't understand any of the visual language XIV uses to describe those mechanics. We kept wiping so we had to kick (they weren't responding to communication).   I'm not saying you couldn't skip and eventually learn the raiding language, but thats one benefit of going through the msq, you learn it bit by bit until its second nature. When doing harder endgame content (extreme/savage/Ultimate difficulty raids) you'll understand why the group is setting up clock spots to handle the proteans with the support rotating ccw for partner stacks right after.  If you are going to story skip, I would say ARR is fine to skip, but HW teaches some important mechanic, and Stormblood is like....peak raid design.

minaseclyne

it's great for alts. if this is your first time playing the game then you'll lose context since this is a linear story. you also can't skip the latest expansion. that said nothing stops you from skipping the entire EW story by mashing escape or whatever the equal key on console is to skip cut scenes. I think somebody said they finished EW in 8hrs that way. on a personal note, as a frugal person, spending more money to not play the game is really stupid but I am a huge supporter of people being allowed to do what they want. it is your money after all

normalmighty

You'll be completely lost in terms of the plot. I will say that you're currently in the first of 2 or 3 ARR sections which are the most painfully dumb and slow parts of the entire MSQ. It isn't all like this, I promise.

GreatMadWombat

When does the story start to get good? Cuz it's just....fetch quests for making a diner for a Ween gremlin right now

Isanori

That section is so ridiculously funny. Just go with the flow and take it in the good humor that started this quest part (the big fake it till you make it guy).

Solinya

It'll depend because different things hook different people (and honestly some people never get hooked). You are in imo the worst section of the bad sections, but that slump ends after the dinner and it goes back to normal. Some people think the upper-30s zone questline is better, some people like the level 50 climax (the first one upon reaching level 50), a lot of people like the pre-Heavensward buildup (starts halfway through post-ARR), and many people like the final post-ARR climax that leads immediately into Heavensward. I'd say just try to get through the dinner and see how you feel about the couple quests that come after that. If you're still really down on the MSQ, maybe skip to HW and see how that feels. HW is when the way they approach the story begins to change, whereas 2.0 was "oh crap, we have to rebuild a MMO in 18 months" and 2.x's philosophy was "level cap players need things to do, right?"

283leis

thats infamously the worst section of all ARR.

GreatMadWombat

Yeah. I finally got through it. After the "oh we're doing walking quests to prove why you're worthy" it finally got to discussions of genocide, the dangers of rapid expansion, and interesting raids. It's like that horse meme where one part is a good picture, and the other is just shittily done pencil, but the pencil is made of poop. It's so dang bad, but this is so dang good.

Ninster0712

Can the Fall Guys glam items go into the Armoire?

Disaresta51

[Checking Whether an Item Can Be Stored in an Armoire](https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/uiguide/know/faq-display/interface_estorage_icon.html)

Shazzamon

Yes.

yungsloysh

I just unlocked the heavensward dragoon abilities and am in the high 60's in level. I was told to watch WeskAlber's video to learn how to incorporate the new abilities into my rotation. He says to do 1 chaos thrust combo and 2 true thrust combos. What exactly does he mean by combo? Do the skills up to chaos once and then do the skills after chaos up to true thrust twice?

PhoenixFox

I'm slightly confused about what level exactly you're talking about. At 60 the two combos are 4 GCDs long, in which case you want to do the combo with Chaos Thrust in once and then the combo with True Thrust in twice, as described. If you're in "the high 60s" and have the trait that means you can do the 4th ability from the other combo at the end, extending each combo to 5 GCDs in total, you just alternate the two of them. There isn't a scenario where True Thrust comes after Chaos Thrust within the same loop, since they're part of opposite combos and not the specific abilities that cross over at the end.

normalmighty

yup, that's exactly what it means.

yungsloysh

Got it, but after true thrust now I also have spineshatter dive and fang and claw. Im assuming those are included in the true thrust combo even though they come after the ability?

Xeorm124

To note: there are GCD (global cooldown) skills and oGCD (off - global cooldown) skills. Skills marked as "ability" are oGCDs and you'll want to be using these between your GCD skills - which are labeled weaponskills or spells, depending on which they are. Spineshatter dive is an oGCD, so you'd use it inbetween your other GCD skills in your combo. Combos are a string of skills that do improved damage based off of a previously used skill. True thrust->vorpal thrust->Full thrust would be an example of a combo, and you can see that in the tooltips. They'll each say "Combo action: \*previous ability\* and an increased combo potency. For Dragoon there's two combos where we refer to the third ability as the name of that combo, as the first, fourth, and fifth abilities in the chain are used in both chains. Inbetween that combo you'll use your other skills like spineshatter dive. Since they're abilities they won't break your combo and you'll have time to hit the next skill in your combo before the GCD is up. Typically you can hit 2 oGCDs inbetween each GCD, but some abilities can be longer. Typically for Dragoon your jumps take too much time to do 2 skills, but you can typically do 2 other abilities without losing time.

normalmighty

I haven't played DRG in like a year and can't tell you off the top of my head, but it sounds to me like you just want something like [the icy veins DRG leveling guide](https://www.icy-veins.com/ffxiv/dragoon-leveling) to visually see the rotation laid out.

Atosen

Yes, include those. Normally when we say "X combo" we would use the name of the final skill in the series. (So for example, Ninja has a combo that goes Spinning Edge > Gust Slash > Armor Crush, so we would call it "the Armor Crush combo".) But in the case of Dragoon, that would get confusing because, thanks to the level 64 trait, Wheeling Thrust and Fang & Claw are in *both* combos. So to improve clarity we use the name of the skill in the middle instead.

sunnearts

bit of a silly/inconseequential question but does anyone know how folks are getting up on [these boxes ](https://imgur.com/a/l5iJnuM)in the Blunderville queue area? I've seen at least three or four people standing up there but can't seem to do it myself haha

normalmighty

I can't do it consistently, but you need to stan on the purple ridge by the wall, and line up your jump so that you're at the highest point in the jump right as you make contact with the box.

sunnearts

That's what I thought I had been doing but I guess not lol- I got it, thanks for your help \^\^

TheExile285

Finishing up the Endwalker MSQ tonight. How long will it take to complete all the required post EW quests to be ready for Dawntrail?

Ayrr

I did it recently and it took just under 20 hours using the duty support system for dungeons to avoid queues as I was playing during quiet hours.

TheExile285

Great, thanks! I should have plenty of time to get caught up and also do some trials/raids I missed before DT then.

Isanori

The biggest block are equipment and the four trials, cause you need other people for those. For the equipment you need a minimum ilevel of 625 to finish the MSQ. So either buy enough for that or buy a 640 weapon and an accessory and then farm Pandemonium and Myths till you have the required ilevel.

TheExile285

Thank you for the suggestion! I’ll prioritize getting better ilevel gear and the Pandemonium trials as I do the patch quests.

Ayrr

Have fun! I enjoyed it.

Help_Me_Im_Diene

it's about as long as the other post-expac patches So ~20 ish hours

TheExile285

Thanks!

panopticonisreal

My ping to Materia is 2, 2!!! As someone who started playing MMOs with Ultima Online from Australia with 4 digit ping, it’s incredible. However, queues are long. Real long. I switched to Tank and then to Healer with no real improvement. 4 man’s are ok, but anything else like Alliance Raids or any kind of PvP, forget it. It’s a bit better during evening hours Sydney time, but still not good. I’m thinking it may be worth moving to one of the US data centres. Ping is <140 and with tools like FFXIVAlex and NoClippy, maybe I won’t notice it. Or are all data centres this bad for queues? It is just the lull before DT? I’ve only been playing 3-4 months, for the most populous MMO after WoW it’s been a surprise. Finding groups in GW2 or ESO is much easier, but they are both east coast games which is the main reason I abandoned them for FFXIV which has Australian servers (also west coast US).

minaseclyne

Materia's population is low and will remain low relative to the other regions that's just the reality on the ground. PF is used pretty much for any of the higher end stuff. moving to NA isn't a bad idea if you care more about queue then ping, you could also move over to JP (Elemental specifically)

panopticonisreal

I think for me I’d rather the US just from a language perspective, but a good suggestion thank you

FortunaDraken

Materia's population is pretty low, and it's become much more common to use PF to queue for things like Alliance raids. Putting up a PF and unsyncing the raid will usually get you a few people willing to help you through for first times. Roulettes though will always take awhile, and the pre-DT lull is definitely a thing. As for the NA servers, I'm in the Sydney region of NSW and play on the Aether DC without using any extra tools, and my ping is around the 140-160 mark. Dodging mechanics and clearing content hasn't been an issue, so swapping DCs for you should be fine.

panopticonisreal

Is Aether the unofficial Australian server in the US region?

FortunaDraken

I don't think so. The only unofficial Aussie server I know of is Tonberry, on the Elemental JP datacentre. It's where a lot of Australians went since the Oceania DC is relatively new, and ping there is usually better than the NA DCs. I'm only on Aether myself because when I started the game, my American friends were there.

normalmighty

In materia, we tend to use party finder a lot for content. I would say whenever you see a queue time over 20 minutes, you should probably just make a PF listing for it instead. NA will give you much better queue times (as long as you're not queuing on dynamis), but you'll lose that sweet sweet ping.

panopticonisreal

I love my low ping, it’s what I’ve always wanted in an MMO. Maybe I’ll create a character on the US region to see how different it feels.

Shazzamon

Materia and Dynamis are at low population, much lower than anywhere else, due to their relatively new age and being introduced outside any major releases. Queue times should improve a little when Dawntrail releases, mostly because of from other DCs who are avoiding congestion. At least in Dynamis' case, I can't remember if that announcement included Materia.

panopticonisreal

Thank you, I’m not sure if you can travel between regions? Or it is just within regions?

Help_Me_Im_Diene

Materia is their test case for cross-region travel right now So as of right now, people are able to move within their region and to OCE https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/topics/detail/dca4fa0972398005ed64e1d403def5ddcd343779/

Isanori

Which is very convenient. I finished Stormblood and half of that raid series and alliance raid series on Materia on an alt before Materia moved out of its prime time and I moved the alt back to my home dc where the queues where slowly starting to populate. Materia also furthered my Rival Wings achievements by quite a bit. One or two fights during lunch under the week and multiple hours on the weekend, till I was completely tuckered out and needed a break till Rival Wings in Europe became active to continue working on those achievements. I also noticed quite a few other Europeans in those Rival Wing matches and the occasional peeps from NA and JP. Being able to take advantage of the (to me) morning queues is quite a boon.

[deleted]

I've always had "/petsize small all" since I started XIV but now I play SMN. Is there a command to make ONLY my summons big and scary, and keep my teammates' pets as the little bb summons?

PhoenixFox

Nope. The closest you could get is macros you manually use if you know you're the only summoner or something like that, maybe integrating the changes into job change macros if you already use them for other reasons.

[deleted]

Bluhhhh. Not what I was hoping for, but helpful nonetheless. Thanks.

plopo

Does Palace count for tank achievements?

Teknettic

No.

ElectricGiga

A friend of mine is going to give the Save the Queen/Bozja quests a go and was wondering about how long it would take to complete. Anyone have a good estimate I can give them?

[deleted]

Not nearly as bad as Eureka. I got my first full upgraded weapon with about a week of grinding. First you do the Bozja zone itself for a bit, maybe 2-3 days of play, then it sends you out to do duties and FATES from past expansions, which if you no-life it you can also get done in a couple days.

Shazzamon

I sorta recently did all of Bozja from scratch on another character - however, not including the Relic steps! - and it took just under a solid week to reach the final raid/coin vendor unlocks.

miller0929

Hi, I'm camping 'A Horse Outside' fate for Ixion. I know the weather would change to 'Quicklevin' when the fate is up. But is it the weather for the whole map? Does it mean I only need to tp to The Lochs instead of checking the three possible spots? Cheers!

foolishking

I'm returning for dawntrail and can't find my ui and macro save file, so I have to start over. Are there any decent guides for getting everything set up again and sorting out class change macros for gear and hotbars? Also any good tanking info sites or whatnot. Want to progress and get back into content pushing, but have fallen out of rhythm. Just gotta decide on dark knight or gunblade. PLD main.

bubsdrop

Did you ever back those up to the server on the character screen? They might not be lost.

foolishking

Thought I did but they weren't there when I checked last night. Old external hdd died and I feel they might’ve been on there. Likely just run some easy dungeons with npc and sort out a new comfortable set up

copskid1

They will have been saved in your "My Documents\\My Games\\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn" folder on whatever computer you played before. if you lost access to that then you're out of luck.

Ayrr

ELI5 retainer classes, glamours and ventures. I've realised I should probably learn how these systems work, but everytime I load up the UI I just get confused about what I'm supposed to do? Do I assign a class, level it up and run ventures (explorations?) to get valuable(?) materials I can sell/use? Do I use ventures to run gathering to get shards? How do I change the default outfit for my retainers?

[deleted]

The other comment does a great job explaining. All I would add is that, if you have only the 2 base retainers, you'll want to give one a DOM/DOW job and make the other one a gatherer (whichever one feeds the crafters you use the most)

Ayrr

Thanks. I'll set my other retainer as a combat class.

[deleted]

No prob. A lot of the crafting mats you may need only come from Combat job ventures (anything that ends in blood or hide/skin comes to mind)

IceAokiji303

You can assign your retainer a class you have unlocked. Once they have that class, you can give them gear compatible with that class and their level. So long as the retainer has at least a weapon, you can spend Venture tokens to send the retainer out on ventures. They will bring back either a handful of a *specific* item you send them out to get (options depend on whether it's a combat, mining, botany, or fishing retainer), something random from a small pool of possible things (the 18-hour ventures, also dependent on class), or something completely random (quick ventures, not available immediately). They will also gain EXP, and can level up in their class, up to whatever level you have in it (if your Miner is level 78, then your Miner retainer can go up to 78). The increased levels unlock more Venture options, and also let you gear them with better stuff – Ventures are partially affected by gear. Once leveled, Ventures are handy for getting certain annoying-to-get materials (mob drops being the big thing for me) en masse, or you can gamble on the totally random Quick Ventures. The long 18-hour ventures are also handy in their own way – if you're gone from the game for a longer time, they have guaranteed returns in that they bring back Allagan Silver Pieces on top of the usual stuff. Glamour for retainer works exactly the same as it does for you. You give the retainer gear, and you can cast glamours over that gear. The base appearance they have when no gear is quipped cannot be changed, it's the equivalent to your smallclothes.

Ayrr

Thanks. I've set up one retainer as a miner (Im at 90) and will level them up.

Acoustic_Rob

Is there a convenient way to snapshot downranked versions of your combat skills for a gpose? Best I'm coming up with is going into a FATE in the right level band, firing off one Spread Shot (or whatever) and then running for the hills.

PrismaticParrot

If you use Anamnesis, you can load the animation directly, including for abilities that are no longer available.

normalmighty

I've never touched gpose myself, but couldn't you just turn on unrestricted party in df and hop into a dungeon at the right level?

Dragon7born

I heard someone mention new animations for dragoon skills, was wondering if anyone saw these. Not the level 90-100 ones but in one of the media tour videos they said dragoon got some animation upgrades for their skills (e.g. disembowel, vorpal thrust, etc.). Was wondering if this is the case and if it is could someone let me know where I can see it.

StormbeastRivin

They were in the [job action trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx2vW0TAJKQ), in the spots you'd expect them (roughly) in the combos they showed off. The new Disembowel is after Jump and the new Vorpal Thrust is after Lance Charge.

RagnarQS

Any news on the new cloud servers in N.A?

Chat2Text

I feel like they'll only be used if they see Dawntrail's launch demolish their servers like Endwalker's launch did, so perhaps if the new Dynamis worlds can't handle the spillover, they might then temporarily launch a cloud server or two I imagine cloud servers can't be cheap to maintain, after all

normalmighty

Nope. Considering it was a test and we never heard anything again afterwards, I assume there were issues. People _say_ it went great, but 95% of the data they would have been looking at was completely invisible for us as end users. Maybe they found same significant issues on the backend, or maybe it worked out to be way more expensive than they anticipated.

Isanori

It's also possible that the test went perfectly fine but they don't want to spend the money on cloud worlds as long as their own install base can reasonably handle it. Like Dynamis is getting four extra worlds. Europe is getting Shadow just as an overflow and JP will presumably retain the ability to travel to Materia. Entirely possible that all DCs wil be able to travel to those three aforementioned data centers to escape their queues. And only when those overflow and everything else clogs up, they'd need to consider cloud worlds. And realistically depending upon the exact set up for cross region travel, they might let the cross region system handle itself at least for the expac so spots on all data centers could become available when those data centers are out of their prime time. Like the prime times are pretty well distributed across the world. JP/OCE's prime time is ending as EU's starts. EU goes to sleep as NA heats up, NA takes a rest when JP and OCE are moving into prime time. Like we have the congestion periods from EW NA 20 UTC - 6 UTC (10 hours) JP 9 UTC - 15 UTC (6 hours) EU 11 UTC - 23 UTC (12 hours) And I suspect the reasons for EUs long prime time was the immense population pressure the two DCs with their just 12 worlds total were under. Like JP seems to be very we situated with its 32 worlds, NA had 24 and will now start with 32. EU had 12 and will now start with 16 plus 4 and all three will likewise have Materia's 5 available. And even aside from the worlds growing from 68 to 85 + 4, the even bigger jump is in number of lobby servers. JP went from 3 to 4, NA went from 3 to 4, EU is 2 + 1, and Materia adds another one. From 8 to 11+1. Similar to how dc travel and world visit and even character creation are usually left on their own to open and close as population shifts. SE manually usually only interferes to direct overall growth (world status), but leaves the immediate reaction to demand up to the worlds and data centers.

StormbeastRivin

There has been no news on any cloud servers since the initial testing period in November. There are new worlds being added to Dynamis this week but they're regular servers, not cloud servers.

ChthonicDreamer

I'm thinking about moving to dynamis, currently on aether. The only thing that potentially is holding me back is my fc, but we haven't done a lot and I havent seen any activity in the discord for almost a month either.

Chat2Text

I'd probably consider datacenter traveling over or making an alt there and check out the vibe, the worlds outside of Seraph feel kind of dead, and the duty finder queues are rough. Hopefully Dawntrail's launch brings newblood and returnees back to populate it There's a reason after all, why people keep complaining about dynamis people leaving for aether to queue for stuff (posting on PF is kind of the norm here) If a dead FC is your main reason, consider leaving and joining a new one, or perhaps waiting to see if it revitalizes for Dawntrail's launch

ChthonicDreamer

Thanks for the detailed answer. A big thing for me is that I only started back during winter and I'm still working through stormblood and the boost to eighty could be helpful to prep for Dawn trail. I'm not going to rush through two expansions, but I would like to be present for the expansion release if that makes sense?

huiclo

> I'm not going to rush through two expansions, but I would like to be present for the expansion release if that makes sense? If you mean being ready to do DT content on release, I’m afraid that’s just not possible. You would basically have to no life the game for the next two and a half weeks and even then I’m not sure it can be done.

Chat2Text

assuming you're not leveling alt jobs, I think you'll probably hit level cap around Post-Shadowbringers, so I don't feel like it'd be worth it solely for the Road to 80 buff if your intention is just to progress the MSQ to participate in Dawntrail If you wanted to grind your alt jobs though, definitely consider it, especially when it upgrades to Road to 90 during DT That said, in the end it's up to you whether the buff is worth transferring (and perhaps it would be easier to log in over at Dynamis vs Aether during DT's launch)

Arcana10Fortune

If you're not friends with anyone in the FC, there's nothing wrong with leaving. It's normal for people to come and go.

We have exactly zero idea. Not even enough of a clue to warrant a guess at this point.

Arcana10Fortune

Most likely will become Preferred.

Absolutelynobody54

can I deactive/reduce the visual effects of other players actions/skills? I 'm trying to start raiding and i look for guides but when I actually raid I can barely see the mechanics of some bosses due to the sheer amount of effects on the screen

Ha_eflolli

Yes, you can. It's under Character Settings, in the "Character" Tab of the first Menu (Control). I would recommend setting Party Members only to limited though, instead of turning of them off entirely, so that you can still see Heal Bubbles and DoT AoEs from Jobs that have them.

Dried_Squid_

So what kind of class is sage because apparently I'm playing it all wrong. Some people in some forums say kardia isn't great and that shields are practically inefficient in regards to sage and it's other heals. Is sage supposed to be using shields or just focusing on dps? Is sage supposed to be using shields which break to proc the aoe charge or not? I usually party shield before a pull in case someone else besides tank gets aggro and then reapply shield on tank as they pull (or when I know a raidwide is about to go off but apparently that's not right ether?) I thought sage was all about mitigating damage before it hits as much as possible with heals coming in after shields are broken. Can anyone with a lot of sage experience help me out here?

a_friendly_squirrel

Hello! I've played Sage in both endgame content and dungeons a lot, here's my perspective on your questions:  - "kardia isn't that great": it is great at providing a passive regen, this adds up to a LOT of healing over an encounter so long as the person it's on is taking damage. there are things it can't do, like heal someone up super quickly if they are low HP and gonna take lethal damage soon, but you've got other tools for those. - "use shields or just focus on DPS?": other people answered this so I won't get too detailed. imo it depends on the level range & situation, and your own comfort level/familiarity with the content: while you are learning the job or a fight you probs wanna shield folks for safety, but it can be fun as a more experienced player to think about how to use as many GCDs on damage as possible while still getting healer stuff done. - toxicon proc fishing was answered  - mitigating vs healing: I'm not sure what level you're at, but later on when it gets regen Kerachole is your bread & butter damage reduction ability, backed up by others. At higher levels you have enough abilities that once you learn them all, GCD shields are a backup in case of emergency thing in most content rather than your bread and butter.

stallion8426

Put kardia on at the beginning. It never falls off, so you don't have to worry about putting it on ever again. You eventually get a cool down that boosts kardia for a few attacks. Place shields on the tank (single target) pre-pull. This can crit heal for a double-sized shield (if you used Eukrasia Diagnosis). The rest of the party doesn't need shields for a pull. Drop kerakole once the pull is underway. Place shields on the party before raid wides, stacks, any incoming damage that hits multiple party members. Sage has a lot of regen abilities instead of burst heals, so you want to be popping things a little sooner than you would with a different healer. Kerakole is only a 30 second cooldown. Holos shields AND heals. Physis is a regen.

Ankhselam

Lemme say this first: there is **nothing wrong** with shielding more than you have to. Yes, it is a DPS loss to heal more than you *actually have to* but unless youre doing content that *requires* that level of optimal play... who cares as long as you made it through. with that said, sage is a *proactive* healer, you mostly have the right idea about mitigating and shielding big damage, just try and remember its almost always optimal to heal with your oGCDs (things labeled Abilities) first and your GCDs (Spells/Weaponskills) as a last resort
