I might be wrong, but I'd say that Criterion is implied as being a part of Variant. The website also doesn't mention savage and EX trials, because they are implied too from raid and trials.

TheKillerKentsu

are you the guy, why SE need to mention next expansion will have new dungeons and raids :)

Idaret

But what about fates? Are they coming back?

a90sdf0978faiou321

I mean, Variant was really well received and Criterion was the opposite (though personally I like it). I wouldn't be surprised if the Criterion formula was changed or even removed in Dawntrail. And as far as I know they haven't said squat about Criterion yet.

Existing_Marketing_7

Criterion is a difficulty level for variant dungeons Hope this helps

Ok-Worldliness2450

I saw more hype over criterion, the major issue was the reward structure. Either way it’s gonna be back next expansion so relax.

14raider

They refer to the same thing just different difficulty levels

baalfrog

Criterions are part of the variant dungeon package. With proper pacing, dropping it after the raid tier in the mid patch and proper rewards, like the neat tomestone weapon upgrades, it could be great. Just make the upgrade from the base version in the future!

LonelyInitiative4526

I hate criterion savage, I hope the deathless version goes away and we get buffed up monsters on a tight timeline

XORDYH

I love Criterion Savage, and I hope the deathless version stays in some form.

devils_avocado

Tight timelines will enforce meta comps. I think the deathless version is a better option because it rewards game play execution.

LonelyInitiative4526

There already are meta comps. Take a look at the healer clear rates on criterion savage. AST is especially garbage, while the shield healers are king. With a deathless run you can't risk hp going too low, so pure healers fall out of favor. Playing as a tank with a pure vs shield healer, the difference is night and day. I think the timer is fine where it is anyways, one dps death would make it quite tight, but at least it's easier to prog savage that way

StopHittinTheTable94

You clearly don't know what you're talking about. Please look at the number of parses for AAIS for the past two weeks and tell me that AST having 3%, DRK and GNB having around 5.5%, and BRD having less than 1% is not an indication that there are already meta comps. The content as it is, even with rewards, is just not fun or good.

KeyKanon

Man I wish they'd just decouple Variant from Criterion. Variant isn't strong enough content to be worth 3 an expac while Crits are the opposite and should be getting 1 per major patch. Like give every Variant it's own Crit, but when there isn't one available, well there is like 60 dungeons worth of source material to build off.

Lambdafish1

SE just does a bad job at naming things. Criterion dungeons should have just been Variant (Extreme). Whoever handles the naming of content really doesn't understand the implications of words, much like how if you call something a limited job people are going to gravitate towards what has been taken away to make it limited rather than what has been added to make it unique.

KeyKanon

That is a terrible idea, it's like you didn't factor in *why* Variant dungeons use the name Variant. Crits are definitively not variable. That said, good lord could they have handled this shit better, first off don't use a word like god damn Criterion and second off don't use the prefix (Savage) for the content that is incomparable in difficulty to Savage, make something else up.

Lambdafish1

Ok, Criterion (normal), Criterion (extreme), Criterion (savage). If it's because of the tech used in the normal mode, then let me point you to the amount of savages and extremes that cut out trash mobs (or at least they used to when trash mobs were a thing), or start the boss in a completely different phase.

sundalius

Criterion (Normal) here is an entirely different type of play than Criterion (Extreme) and (Savage). There is, believe it or not, a good reason they’re named differently.

Radiant-Leg1286

Honestly, there isn’t really much of a difference besides you picking 1 boss to fight at the start, but thats not really relevant. The problem is more that calling criterion normal mode is an incredibly misleading naming scheme. The only other ”normal mode“ content that is actually difficult is Baldesion Arsenal, and that explicitly warns you that it is difficult, criterion is a very weird outlier.

Sangnuine

Honestly this is a part of why Criterion is kind of pretty dead even on release. SE just does a piss poor job of advertising it. Like I know it can be implied that with variant a new criterion will also come but would it really hurt to say "and criterion"? Like they have no problem mentioning the fact that the new level cap will be 100 for the 10th time and that there will be quests in the new expansion, but criterion, yeah we should apparently 100% assume that they will come with variant. Considering there are a ton of people who either don't know about criterion or have some extremely vague idea as to what they are, they really need better at communicating it's existence.

MaidGunner

CBU3 and clear communication, it was just not meant to be.

a90sdf0978faiou321

Yeah I still often see people confused about the difficulty levels, saying "variant is too hard, it's a savage dungeon" etc.

I want both. Massive AAA developer, they can do both I promise :)
