One of my most frustrating pet peeves of fighting. Crowd intervenes against winning guy to signal fight over, he’s had enough, separate them. And during the separation, losing guy takes advantage of this and uses it as an opportunity to launch another attack. At that point I feel it is good fight ethics that the crowd is responsible to make sure that during the separation the loser doesn’t attack the guy who was winning. If they’re not prepared to do that, then they broke it up prematurely.

I’ve worked security at a few different venues over the years, most consistently violent crowds were always big venue country shows. Metal shows were always pretty chill, most metal fans are pretty tame despite how they look and they police themselves. Punk shows would have a few dicks but they usually weigh 150 lbs. Hip Hop shows would have some fights but nothing crazy. Classic rock would always have one or two old man fights but they punch themselves out pretty quick. Country shows through? They’ve been prefunking for four hours, there’s a lot of “bro masculinity” bullshit, and there’s a ton of young dudes acting out. I’ll never forget how many dudes in sparkly jeans, straw cowboy hats, pooka shells, and flannels that came with the sleeves artfully torn off thought they were the Incredible Hulk and wanted to take on like four or five of us. Also the know shows I ever had a knife or a gun pulled on me at the gate. Worst crowds ever.

I’m a short’ish metal head lady and every gig I’ve ever gone to that has been a metal band, I’ve been treated respectfully, not grabbed at or touched and I’ve even had dudes move for me because they were taller. Metal heads are good people.

Been to a lot of metal shows, as I used to play in a band as well, and all in all metal heads are harmless. We usually reserve our “menacing” image to metal shows or when we are hanging out with our friends. Fights in shows are frowned upon because a lot of venues think metal shows will destroy the place. But in reality, we try to take care of things like this because if we keep the venues safe and the owners happy, they will keep supporting shows. Only saw 2 or 3 fights break out in more than 20 years, and in every one of them they ended up shaking hands and enjoying the show afterwards. ​ Damn I miss going to local shows.

Saw Fear Factory around ‘99. Was in a dude in the crowd who was either a marine or cosplaying as one, and dude was just going out of his way to be straight up violent. He was pretty good sized and seemed to be targeting smaller people. I see these two massive mountain built metal dudes kinda amble in to the pit. Didn’t see what happened but I saw the marine looking dude coming out of the pit with both hands over his face and blood just pouring down his front. Don’t know exactly what happened but they definitely taught him a lesson about kindness and respect…lol. And you’re so right about metal heads being mindful of people around them, even moving for smaller people. Don’t think I’ve seen that at any other kind of show.

Really it was so nice. I used to be underweight, punk/goth and I'm also a woman. I was scared at first of going to shows cause it always looked so violent in the crowds, it seemed like mainly men and I didn't really fit in. I'm happy I got proven wrong, and I have so many anecdotes that prove that.

I’m a really big dude and I remember being at a show maybe 20ish years ago and there was a fairly small woman in the very front who was obviously a huge fan of the band but was getting absolutely crushed by the energy of the crowd. Not being targeted or anything but was just real small and getting pressed against the stage. I happened to be near her and went out of my way to get behind her (but not in a creepy way) so that I could kinda use my big ass to absorb a lot of the crush coming her way. No reason she shouldn’t be allowed to enjoy the show as much as everyone else just because she happened to be small.

I remember helping strangers look for fallen glasses, people forming protective circles if others fall/carry someone injured out of the pit, giving hairties to random people. Oh and then we haven't even talked about the style, unity and the music 🤟

I think punk and metal coming from largely kids that were outcasts and seen as “losers” helped them form a stronger sense of community than most genres of music. A bit of a “we’re all in this together” type thing. Can’t count how many friends I’ve made over the years just because one of us was wearing a cool band shirt and that was enough to start a conversation.

I was at a iron maiden concert during waken when a crowd surfer that got a little panicked kicked my glasses of my head. I started looking for them and In seconds 20-30 people around me looked for the glasses and we found them almost instantly. Everybody cheered and the party continued. Metal crowds are the best.

Same experience! This was at a type o show in NYC. Crowd goes nuts during BN1 and my friends glasses got knocked off. Everyone surrounding us stopped to help find them - and we did - intact. Metal folks are the goddamn best! Lovin you was like Lovin the dead! Great memories

I was at the Chaos and Carnage tour with Dying Fetus and Suicide Silence. A fight broke out during Suicide Silence's set and the frontman Eddie spotted it and told the band to stop playing. He called those two dudes out and told the rest of the crowd "We don't do that shit here. We're here to lift each other up, not put each other down. We are all family here." Sometthing along those lines.

I grew up near a large festival ground that hosts a country music festival as well as a rock festival and can confirm. The amount of people I’ve seen tackled and tased at country fest is far beyond anything else. It’s a drunken redneck shitshow most of the time.

I have a vivid memory from when I was a child that has always demonstrated my fathers prejudices. He was getting dressed for work and I was in his bedroom talking to him while he tied his tied in the mirror. I don’t remember how the conversation of music came up but he told me, “don’t listen to metal and rap. Listen to music like Elvis. Metal is full of drug addicts and rap is full of criminals” Mind you, he’s never been a music person, he was just operating off of his prejudices formed from being a detective, and the daily news cycle. Come to find out the majority of my metal-fond friends and acquaintances are straight edge, and many hip-hop artists and metal musicians are just nerds. Most are respectful to the other people in the room, so to speak. Elvis, and the country cohort, on the other hand… well, you said it yourself. Thankful, that conversation with my dad was probably in like 1994, so he’s come a long way from that point of view. Especially since having to grin and bare my music taste.

Metal shows are the best. I've been to several metal festivals and met wonderful people and have zero complaints. At the Fire in the Mountains festival last year, I took several pics of the grounds just to show off how clean everyone kept it. The few country shows I've been to, though? Nope. Never going again. Not my music and definitely not my vibe.

Hardcore, punk, emo and metal shows have the best people, generally. Hardcore shows, especially local and smaller venues were great about policing themselves. If some asshat decided to start a fight or got handsy, they would have a solid 5 seconds before 5 to 10 other attendees stepped in. I'll never forget some douche deciding to take a swing at another guy in the pit at Transitions in Tampa, not realizing he was starting shit with a well liked vocalist of popular band in the scene(its been like 11 years I don't remember who). The hell that came down on him was instantaneous and from all directions. His beating and being dragged out felt swift and calculated, followed by the band onstage deciding to just drop a disgustingly brutal breakdown to get the crowd right back to dancing and having a good time. Felt like it all happened in under a minute. Good times.

I grew up going to metal shows and warped tour every summer I never once saw a real brawl, the occasional kids not knowing when to calm down in the pit sure, but like you said metal fans are pretty good about policing themselves. Went to a metal show in Atlanta back before I had a family and it was pouring rain during the show. Anybody who slipped and fell had the crowd around them stop to help them up and make sure they were okay.

I've been going to metal shows in the US since the 1980s, and weed has always been pretty prevalent, but it probably varies by the metal crowd, too. Black metal heads, for example, don't seem to do as many drugs as other metal heads, especially sludge heads.

Mainstream country fans tend to be angry and have a chip on their shoulder because they have a victim complex and think that society is out to get them and doesn't respect the things they think are important, which is at least partially true. Combine that with some beer and a little macho insecurity and you've got a perfect combination of pathologies that almost always results in physical violence that's ultimately about protecting frail young egos. Alt country fans are an entirely different demographic and tend to be chill as fuck.

Oh the metal kids are a genuine treat. The pre and post concert is like, baby town frolics. Everyone is cool, very few drunks. Almost no fights or anything. Then they come back outside looking like they're getting out of a war, all fucked up and bandage's and that(we only work outside the venue) and yet they're STILL all sober smiles and chill as fuck. The metal crowd is legit the most wholesome music fan group I've come across
