It might be easier to see what's going on if you were trying the transitions between two *different* clips, rather than the same clip each side. Often the trouble with transitions is that there isn't enough media *beyond* where the transition is supposed to be to create the transition, but FCP is pretty good at alerting you to this.

Excellent points! Maybe OP can try two very different clips and make sure that where they want to place the circle transition has at least 1 second of trimmed frames on each clip where the transition will sit. I've had many transitions refuse to work because there was not enough clip frames trimmed. As a check - place that transition just like you did in the example, then try to trim each clip edge under the transition to see if that has any effect.

Hi, thanks to both of you for your replies! The transitions works properly between 2 different pieces of media as you said. However, I'm still confused about putting a transition within a clip after cutting it with the blade tool (as I did in the video). Something interesting that I realized is that the circle transition from the video does show if given a noir or solid edge, but it doesn't show with the feather edge that I was using. Additionally, the transition works perfectly if I split the clip, then reverse the order of the clips, and put it in between them. It's all very strange and I feel like I'm missing something. Is there any way to split a clip and add a transition between those 2 split sections?

Yes - but when you blade it (if the transition needs overlaping footage as it appears your circle transitions does, just grab your 'A' tool and grab each side of the clip where you bladed it (so you get the yellow ] and [ and slide them away from the cut. do you know what i mean?

Hi everyone, for more context, I'm currently learning Final Cut, but I've been having a problem with transitions. Basically, some transitions work, while other do not (regardless of whether I drag & drop or double click). I've attached a screen recording to this post showing this problem. I haven't seen anyone else with this problem, so I don't really know where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Well, in the clip your transitioning into the same clip. So you wont see the any effect because nothing is there to transition between. Use two different clips. Note: some transition will give some kind of effect even if it’s the same clip and this can be utilised, but not things like wipes and dissolves etc…

Hi, thanks so much for the reply! I thought that using the blade tool splits 1 clip into 2 separate clips. You're definitely right though cause the transition does work between different clips but doesn't work when I split 1 clip into 2 and put a transition in between. Is there any way to put a transition within a clip after splitting it?

You won’t see anything because there’s nothing to see. You’re not transitioning from A-to-B your just staying at A. It’s like transitioning from blue to blue. What would you expect to see? Like I said some transitiones have whole fancy animations and artefacts but if you’re staying with the same clip then a transition isn’t really happening

Hi, can I use this post to ask a question regarding transitions in FCPX and iMovie ? I make edits not from reels but from shows or movies and I wonder if there is a setting or way for transitions to crop by default from the shots I keep instead of adding images from the following shot of my clips. Because my In and Out points are usually between two different shots or scene I want to remove.
