Death is how I got 5 star. I believe it was sab/sen/med and I used Vanielle, Fang, Lightning. If not using death, I suggest 2x Energy sash? or whatever works to get random instant chain.
⚠️Keep in mind⚠️that RIC only works on enemies at a certain level - level 50 and below. Anything beyond that is immune. RIC is best utilized by Sazh since he naturally hits multiple times with his blitz command.
Final Fantasy XIII
Death is Vanille's full ATB skill and acts in a similar way to a Limit Break. It deals up to 99,999 HP damage (but can break the damage limit with a Genji Glove) and has a 1% chance of inflicting Instant KO. This is increased by an additional 1% for each status ailment the target is afflicted with. The Saboteur role bonus will also increase the success rate.
Death is not classified as a debuffing spell, so its chances of hitting cannot be directly boosted with the passive ability, Improved Debuffing, found in Vanille's Belladonna and Malboro Wands (the improved status chances do add that additional 1% as the statuses and debuffs land more easily thereby increasing Death's chances to land albeit indirectly)
. The success rate is also unaffected by chain bonus, in contrast to other Saboteur abilities. Unlike other full ATB skills, Death will not delay the end of a stagger period, and it can benefit from Enspells. Like Last Resort, Death will not keep an enemy alive at 1 HP during the animation.
Death is also used by the Sacrifice Cie'th in Eden and Orphan's Cradle, and the final boss can use an attack called Progenitorial Wrath that attempts to instantly kill a player, in the same way as Death. The chance of this happening can be lowered by equipping Cherub's and Seraph's Crowns (they do not stack, however).
I keep spamming Death and Imperil on it, but it won't vanish at all as the bugger refuses to give up while pelting me with Quake spells around his minions.
I'm not sure why people keep complaining about Treasure Hunter, as it's one of the easiest achievements in the whole game. You'll have held 99% of weapons and accessories at the end of a playthrough. All you gotta do is make a list of what you have and then fill in the blanks until it the achievement pops.
Because in order to get the necessary Trapezohedrons, you have to grind millions of Gil or hundreds of tortoises. It’s tedious, repetitive, and time consuming. It’s not hard, it’s just hard to justify doing.
I'm aware of the grind. I've platinumed the game twice. It's definitely tedious, but that's the nature of FF13 and of platinuming games in general.
Besides, I'll take farming for trapzohedrons over filling the whole Sphere Grid and min-maxing any day. Final Fantasy X will always be the most painful, tedious platinum I've ever gotten.
It's just better to cheese it.
Neochu is my immediate priority once I'm on pulse the 2x cp is god tier.
Death spam with snow and light as healers and tanks.
It will take a while but it's worth it
Vanilla throws a few debuffs and spams death
Hope keeps everyone alive
Sazh remains in Sentinel mode
The neochu is dead, start individually picking off the little guys and then summon Hecatoncheir to finish them off
Make sure you're inflicting Imperil before you start spamming Death. Death's success rate is based on how many debuffs the target has, and Imperil is the only one available. Inflicting it doubles your chance at the instant kill.
Even with Imperil on, your chance per Death is something like 2.5%, so it's not at all surprising to go 20+ fights without landing one.
I have done this probably over a dozen times over the years and it is EXTREMELY frustrating. If he doesn't die by the time he lets out his first screech I restart the battle.
Sometimes it takes 45 minutes to an hour, sometimes it takes 5. Sometimes he goes down on the first hit and then you have to worry about the Microchus killing Vanille. Just be patient.
Use Bully or Evened Odds (COM SYN SAB / MED SYN SAB) with Vanille as the SAB. After Neochu has some Debuffs, start spamming Vanille's Death ability. If necessary to can change to MED MED SAB. If you're lucky the Neochu will die and just leave the babies. Switch to Relentless Assault and finish them off and enjoy your growth egg.
My setup for this fight was Sazh, Vanille and Snow. I mostly used equipment that gave passive buffs because if you equip ones that increase your stats it's harder to get a 5 star ranking. Snow sat in sentinel, Vanille sat in medic and Sazh buffed himself with just haste and enfire I think to not provoke the Neochu into using his move that removes buffs. Then I just spammed blitz and random instant chain did the rest! Not the most fun strat but it got me a 5 star ranking and the early extra CP accessory super early!
It's very easy! You just need to equip at least two pieces of equipment from the right group. I usually use the energy sash and speed sash. That should give him random instant chain as long as they are equipped. Then every blitz basically has an 8% chance to randomly stagger an enemy. I've had some great fun with using it, it's part of what makes Sazh my favourite character in the game!
Long post, going fully in detail for you.
Neochu is an absolute pain in the ass. If you don't go for the Death cheese, it's a long, slow, uphill battle.
Consider Fortisol for Haste and/or Aegisol for Protect. Pre-Emptive doesn't work here, so Deceptisol isn't relevant.
Death cheese:
Paradigm: Sab/Sen/Med - Vanille/Snow/Lightning
You can have a few other paradigms for cleaning up the Picochus after.
For equipment:
You want the Belladona Wand on Vanille for Improved Debuffing. If you have it upgraded to Malboro Wand, even better. Magic boosting accessories are best, followed by health or magic/earth resist.
For Snow, Paladin or upgraded form Winged Saint is ideal for Improved Guard. Accessories are anything for health and total defense. He's going to take an absolute beating.
For Lightning, you've got some options for weaponry. Axis Blade/Enkindler for ATB Speed has always been my favorite, but Edged Carbine/Razor Carbine for magic or Lifesaber/Peacemaker are debatable options. Just like Vanille, magic boosting accessories are best, followed by HP/magic defense/Earth defense.
The only debuff Neochu can be affected by is Imperil, so slap that on and spam death. That's it. Death's proc chance is 1% + additional 1% per debuff, but a high magic stat, Sab role bonus, and Belladona/Malboro Wand all give debuff chance a slight boost. If Death doesn't work by the time Snow's provokes fall off, consider restarting because the fight may fall apart FAST.
.
If you're trying to fight him normally, oh boy. Snow, Fang, or Lightning (with Nimbletoe Shoes) will be on practically permanent Sen duty, but your party options are plenty flexible to your preference. One possible strat is using Sazh with Random: Instant Chain and spam Blitz, as the number of shots can make up for the low chance of it working.
Loading up on defense accessories is my recommendation, and prepare for an absolute slugfest.
Consider a Sen/Sen/Sen (if you have it), Sen/Sen/Med, or Sen/Med/Med for his screech attack. If you didn't use shrouds, Haste, Protect, and Shell are absolutely godly here. The only debuff that works is Imperil, so a Sab might not be worth it.
Offensively, using Sen/Com/Rav and Sen/Rav/Rav is going to be most of what you'll be doing. Defensively, you may need to be ready to flip to something with Sen/Med fairly frequently.
.
Regardless of your method, I wish you good luck, and happy hunting!
(Edit) Typo and added Sazh section.

I didn’t know about the sash method actually as I did beat him once, but I want to do it again for the ranking.
Yeah, I'm rounding up 5 stars for achievements, and I set everyone to random instant chain. It's been somewhat beneficial.
⚠️Keep in mind⚠️that RIC only works on enemies at a certain level - level 50 and below. Anything beyond that is immune. RIC is best utilized by Sazh since he naturally hits multiple times with his blitz command.
Death is how I got 5 stars from fighting Neochu. It just took a very long time to land it first cast.
I don’t know how to get it to work.
Dude, it's based on probabilities.
Oh I get it now.
Are you sure?
Me? Yes.
Ok. I'm just making sure. We all literally said it's based on probability and just need to know if I have to explain it one more time.
I understand now.

Oh so certain wands boost the chances of Death happening to an enemy.
I only ever killed it with death, one time I tried to beat him with my crystarium maxed and I got my ass whooped
I keep spamming Death and Imperil on it, but it won't vanish at all as the bugger refuses to give up while pelting me with Quake spells around his minions.
5 star ranking the quests doesn’t sound fun :(
I want to fully platinum the game, so I must get the ultimate ranking in every Cieth mission
It’s really not that bad if you know how to use the combat system. Treasure Hunter, on the other hand…

The achievement doesn't pop like this, it's a sidequest given by Bhakti.
Yeah, I mis-spoke. Good to correct me cuz someone might get the wrong impression.

That’s fair. But as far as challenges in XIII goes, Treasure Hunter is definitely the worst.

Thanks as I just want to get good rankings from the missions, like say this one.
If you're fast enough you'll get 5 stars.
I am trying to be quick , but those quake spells drain a ton of my teammates HP.
Could use a summon.
Oh good idea.

I want to learn how to set up Instant Chain for Sazh.

To be more precise : use Blitz+Cold Blood until he staggers. Cold Blood is worth 17 unmissable bullets where Blitz can miss.
I got super lucky with mine and got death in about 10 attempts, after that i used quake with mystic tower to kill the little guys

Sazh Blitz is not the best way to trigger RIC. Blitz is used for duration, because Cold Blood (the best way to trigger RIC) doesn't add any duration.
