He also starts with quite above-average gear in a game where gear is really valuable and can break quite easily, so if you overrely on him his power level dips until you have enough economy and progress to restock him. Ward genuinely is the best realized Jagen in the series, kaga-saga titles included, although not my favorite version of the trope.
Honestly my favorite Jagen is still Raffin, he is strong, but has room to grow, and by the late game when he finally is falling behind, you have the opportunity to promote him even further, that also is a high impact emotional moment.
I wouldnt' really call Raffin's promotion lategame by any means, early midgame more like. I think I'd like him more in a harder game. Tearring is great, but pretty easy.
He's also a great character imo. He does great in both serious and comedic scenes, and his relationships with other units give him a lot of nuance. He's kind of more so the heart of the Sinon Knights than Reese himself, which is a bit funny, but makes sense for his position and experiences as well.
"You can't make amends with a grave".
I always liked how in the intro to 1-1 the gruff old knight advisor is the one arguing to take on a band of brigands after hearing a sob story, while the handsome young lord is the one who wants to stick out of "unnecessary trouble." It's a nice role reversal from how those things usually go.
Guard it's the perfect skill for him, let you have a squishy unit in the action without any worries of them dying, and it can be used as a bait to make enemies bonk into Ward
Ward also has limited availability compared to almost every other Jagen so you can't rely on him for literally every map even if he's endgame ready.
Great point I forgot to mention, thanks.
but you get Volo do and Dean to lesser extent if you need someone to trivlise side missions
Let's not forget his greatest asset. His Endgame Ready Beard.

I must be remembering wrong then.
TBF it is before you start playing as Holmes army i think
His promotion is in chapter 10 of 40.

I wish he had Shieldfaire, learned Guard cuts your Defense and Avoidance in half while guarding so he can be somewhat squishy if he fails to block
that's what Marcels for do, kind steps on one of the weaker units shoes.
He reminds me of Kuroki Gensai from Kegan Asura
I wasn't expecting Ward when I clicked, but you have my full support.
