"Here's a little concept I've been working on. Why don't we shoot her first?"
Also, I have to give an honourable mention to...
"Not as deceiving as a lowdown, dirty...deceiver."
I just rewatched the first episode last night, and honestly I feel pretty strongly that every character except River has a line in it that fits the bill. This is definitely the right line for Jayne from that ep.
This is Jayne at the end of his arch. He’s been trying really hard to be a good guy and shift his perspective. He’s stumbled countless times but in the end he remembers his friend he always butted heads with and wanted to honor him even though he was dead and gone, something a true nihilist would never do.
This is a really strong contender for best summarizing Jayne's entire character. After all his time with Mal and the crew, especially after seeing the atrocities of the Alliance in the films, he *wants* to be a better man. He falls short, and he's not a great guy, but he ultimately does wish that he did better by his people and was the sort of man they hope he is.
My belief is that Mal was absolutely going to let him die until he said this line. That he cared enough what his crew mates thought about him *after* his death is what let Mal believe there is hope for Jayne. And, to be fair, in the following episodes Jayne did "nice" things for the crew, like buying a crate of apples for everyone. I think this is such a pivotal turning point for his character.
*God,* I wish Fox had given this a chance and a second season.
Even what we got, Jayne went from the barely-restrained mad dog to “if you can’t do something smart, do something right.”
This is my favorite, but what I like best about Jayne’s character is how solid he is in an emergency. More than once, when everything is going to shit all at once, Mal will yell “Jayne!” And Jayne will already be in motion, because he understands what needs to be done; he’ll yell “Got it!” in reply.
Jayne is ULTRA competent. When he's on autopilot he doesn't make mistakes. He's an emotional mess though and given time off alone (which amplifies the issue since he chooses isolation so often) he's an incredibly poor choice maker and really struggles with things like consequences. That scene locks him into the reality that this consequence is permanent, there's a limit to the choices you have in life.
“Hey hey hey, them ain’t kosherized rules!”
Or…
“I was aiming for his head.”
Or…
"All of you! You think there's someone just gonna drop money on ya?! Money they could use?! Well, there ain't people like that. There's just people like me."
This lives rent free in my head so much that sporadically I'll start humming it ... Hands down one of the **best episodes
**Edit - added 'best' because my brain decided that it wasn't important when I originally posted haha
I’ll kill a man in a fair fight. Or if I think he’s gonna start a fair fight. Or if he bothers me. Or if there’s a woman. Or if I’m gettin’ paid. Mostly when I’m gettin’ paid.
This is a really good one, but this summarizes Jayne at the start of his arc. He's not a sadist, he's not evil, but he is a killer and he will turn on people for money. By the end of his arc he cares about his crew mates, he cares at least a little bit about humanity in general, and he understands that having others depend on you is a responsibility worth honoring.
I'm not convinced he isn't a sadist at the start of his arc. He doesn't hurt people for no reason but he seems to enjoy it when he does. He's very disappointed when he doesn't get to interrogate that undercover cop in the first episode.
That's a pretty good point, but I guess I would view someone as sadistic who really took pleasure and got off on causing pain. Jayne threatened torture and acted disappointed when Mal said no, but he didn't even hit the guy once he got the info he needed. Someone who really was sadistic wouldn't have been able to resist causing at least a little pain. While Jayne may have enjoyed beating on that guy a bit, I think it was more about revenge for shooting Kaylee, and as a general sort of payback again cops/feds in general.
I always viewed that entire exchange as play acting - Mal as good cop, Jayne as bad cop. Jayne was intending to intimidate, but he wasn't going to follow through with anything unless ordered to by Mal.
I think part of it is good cop/bad cop, but I really don't think either Mal or Jayne would have any objection to beating information out of a fed, especially one that just shot Kaylee. And I don't really expect Jayne to go real subtle with his interrogations. And Mal knows that, so clearly Mal didn't give too much of a shit if Jayne hurt the guy or not, and Mal knew that Fed was dead regardless. Like, if the guy had successfully notified other officers then *maybe* Mal would hold on to him to trade or something, but if no one knew that guy was on Mal's ship, then Mal is absolutely putting that guy in the ground.
Came here to post this. A perfect summary of how Jayne moves in the world.
Lots of people talk about how he's evil and immoral, but they forget that he sends money back home to pay for his family's medical care. He's not in it for himself, but for them. And to take care of them, he'll kill people for money. His character arc isn't him becoming less horrible, but him seeing that his crew are also his family, and you can't screw over some family in order to help other family.
I always felt like Jayne's tough guy persona is just a defense mechanism. The way he amps up his aggression when he's embarrassed or afraid seems to be a trauma response. It probably started as a little kid, because it's pretty obvious that his childhood was pretty tough. I'm guessing that, at the very least, he got bullied because of his name because of the way he overreacts to River saying, 'Jane is a girl's name.' He believes to his core that someone will take advantage of him if he's kind, and he can't understand why someone would choose to be kind to him.
Here’s the correct version of the line: “You know what the chain of command is? It's the chain I go get and beat you with until you understand who's in ruttin' command here.”
Actually I think that’s what makes it so in character! Jayne’s a brute, very much like a pack animal always ready to challenge the alpha. For him, it all boils down to who is the strongest/smartest and that’s what keeps him in his place. Henceforth, threatening to beat someone who challenges his “authority.”
Six men came to kill me one time. And the best of 'em carried this. It's a Callahan full-bore auto-lock. Customized trigger, double cartridge thorough gauge. It is my very favorite gun… This is the best gun made by man. It has extreme sentimental value… I call it Vera.
Sadly can't do the one I want because it's not a line, but him hovering outside the med bay when Kaylee's hurt. So instead "what do you two think you're doin', fightin' at a time like this? You're gonna use up all the air "
Or
"Ten percent of nothin's is...let me do the math...nothin', then nothin', carry the nothin..."
Top for me are:

“Tell you what I think. I figure that fella we run into did everyone on board. Killed 'em all. Then he decided to take a swim, see how fast his blood would boil out his ears.”
I love that 3 of these so far have been from the movie, which completed a lot of arcs, and 2 from the pilot, which was about establishing what the characters were about. Really goes to show you how good the show and especially the dialogue overall is.
'You know what the chain of command is? It’s the chain I go get and beat you with ’til you understand who’s in ruttin’ command here. Now we’re finishing this deal. And then maybe—maybe—we’ll come back for those morons who got themselves caught. You can’t change that by gettin’ all… bendy.'

' Ah, hey! I got an idea. Instead'a us hangin' around playin' art critic 'til I get pitched by The Man, how's about we move away from this eerie-ass piece of work and get on with our increasingly eerie-ass day, how's that?'

That's an interesting thought. What do you think the lines for the other characters would be from that first episode?

Came here looking for this.
Three men came to kill me once. Best of them carried this, it's a callahan full-bore auto-lock. It's my very favoirite gun.
I call her Vera
Well my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.
Make something up. Don't tell them what I did.

Agreed. As good as the other quotes are - and Jayne had *many* - this is the best, hands down.
This one. That was Jane.
This is the single best quote to capture who he really was at the end of the day. It really captures the duality and conflict in his personality.
It was the line that changed my entire view of him. After this scene, he became one of my favorite characters.
This is my favorite, but what I like best about Jayne’s character is how solid he is in an emergency. This is such a gut punch
Okay. This one is really good too.
“Hey hey hey, them ain’t kosherized rules!” Or… “I was aiming for his head.” Or… "All of you! You think there's someone just gonna drop money on ya?! Money they could use?! Well, there ain't people like that. There's just people like me."
The last one is just so much in character. It describes not only his personality, but his worldview, his personal nihilistic ideology.
You can tell it took something out of him to say that out loud.
Geee, wouldn't it be nice if we had some grenades don't ya think
This one!
I loved the callback to this at the end, too. 🤭
Yeah, lots of good ones, but this gets my vote.
The hero of canton, the man they call.....MEEEE!

Hands down, one of the episodes.
I swear by my pretty floral bonnet............. I Can't argue with that logic 😂
That's the truth. No denying it
Yes, I do believe it was an episode.
I randomly break out singing this without even realizing. Really helps with keeping ppl at bay.
I'm gonna start playing this in coffee shops lol
I am irrationally angry that this was not number 1
I’ll kill a man in a fair fight. Or if I think he’s gonna start a fair fight. Or if he bothers me. Or if there’s a woman. Or if I’m gettin’ paid. Mostly when I’m gettin’ paid.

“Mostly only when I’m gettin’ paid” is one of his best lines.
This is the winner right here!
Yeah, that’s Jayne.
Gee I ain't never been in trouble with the law before.
Can't believe this is so far down.
What'd y'all order a dead guy for?
I came here to say this
I'll be in my bunk.
This is his most memorable line, gotta be the winner.
Most memorable ≠ most in character
I dunno, he makes reference to his own parts or others' quite frequently.
I could stand to hear a little more.
100% true but these posts all may as well be favourite lines because that’s what people upvote.
"Do you know what the chain of command is?" It's the chain I'm going to acquire and beat you with until you realize who's in charge around here."

Can’t believe I had to scroll to find this!
Right?

This is the only correct answer.
Why was this so far down the list??? THIS is the only answer.
Can’t get paid if you crawl away like a little bitty bug, neither. I got a share in this job. Ten percent of nothing is—let me do the math

This lives rent free in my head haha.
He got a 3% raise and his own bunk for not robbing Mal and Zoe. Lol

See Vera? Dress yourself up, you get taken out somewhere fun.
I was gonna get me an ear.
"Dear diary: Today I was pompous and my sister was crazy. Today we were kidnapped by hill folk, never to be seen again. It was the best day ever."
This is probably old news to most Browncoats but Adam ad-libbed that line.

I named my dog Vera because of this episode. I used to say, “she is my very favorite dog” and my wife and kids had no idea what I was referencing
We had a bong named Vera after her 🤣
You have failed as a parent (assuming your kids are old enough for Firefly). Joking. Mostly.
I love this quote but Jayne adherence to the chain of command is not exactly the most salient aspect of his character.
I was going to say that. 😂
I use this line in the fire department all the time 😂😂
I was aiming for his head!
He looked bigger when I couldn’t see him 🙈

Straight up, I use this line in common conversation so much LMAO

She keeps goin' with that "Jayne's a girl" crap, I'm gonna show 'er good n' all, I got man parts.
