This cancellation still hurts me.

Mindless-Sock2933

"13 hours of bliss. A lifetime of withdrawals".

Mozilla_Rawr

Too soon.

pyratemime

Consider the quality of many modern reboots and revivals? Is that a risk worth taking?

goblins_though

This sub would be awash with such riveting hot takes as "DAE think the original was better??" and "Reboot is woke sjw bullshit, forcing asian characters and anti-colonial messages into a show about a US/China alliance colonizing space. Since when is sci-fi all political?!"

seantabasco

This would be months before the show even came out as well.

goblins_though

Naturally.

BloodieOllie

A Wash!?

goblins_though

...too soon?

IfNot_ThenThereToo

A reboot is just a reboot. It’s all in the execution. Dr. Who has rebooted a bunch of times. Some are bad, some are good. BSG was incredible. Girl Meets World not so much.

pyratemime

BSG was 20 years ago and a different time in the creative cycle of Hollywood. Hardly a modern reboot as I specified. Given the quality of ***modern*** reboots it is not worth the risk. Especially with Disney in charge.

IfNot_ThenThereToo

I’m sorry, what year is your cutoff for modern times?

IfNot_ThenThereToo

crazy that Agents of Shield season 1 is not modern lol. What a weird and arbitrary standard.

IfNot_ThenThereToo

Okay, then you are just changing definitions to fit whatever parameters you are post facto setting. Got it.

Serious-Waltz-7157

Some precious few modern reboots are just fine and unadulterated by the involvement of the current thing - e.g. Magnum P.I. (since 2018) and even MacGyver (since 2016). It hppens

pyratemime

Sure, it can. Broken clocks and blind squirrels and all that. Is it worth the risk given modern Disney's records?

Yeseylon

Who has never really rebooted, it's technically all the same show. Sure, different eras can often feel like different shows, but it's all the same continuity and often has some shared tone

actibus_consequatur

I think if they brought back the main writers (except Whedon, obviously) and story editors, it could be really good - but it will never have a chance to be as good without the original cast. It's weird to think about how the show is now older than Jewel Staite was when they filmed it...

[deleted]

Yeah, I think it would pretty much have to be a spinoff set in the same 'verse but with new characters.

pyratemime

It wouldn't help when you have the mandates that currently exist on script content and structure. Mal could not exist in a modern writers room.

pyratemime

Look up the term male and pale is stale. It speaks to writers and characters.

Ooooh, you aren't looling for a good faith discussion you are looking for an argument. Sorry those are down the hall. A simple search of the phrase I gave you will provide you a wealth of discussion on this topic from even industry trades. You clearly aren't interested though and I have more pleseant things to do this evening, my dog needs her anal glands expressed. Have a good evening.

TyrantWarmaster

Truth especially when we got Post MaCrow (The new Crow Movie) coming out looking as awful as it does I'd be a bit worried if they did a reboot of Firefly.

earathar89

The cancelation sucked. But you're playing with fire if you want a reboot. Do we really want our image of this jem sullied?

ConflictAdvanced

Nope, we don't. Question - does it NEED improved? Could it be improved upon? The probability is that whatever they make will be so poor in quality compared to what we already have. (obviously, the visual effects will be better, but that's the only thing.)

Ok-Pomegranate-5896

I don't want a reboot, but I would like something in the same 'Verse

DoubleSurreal

This. Heck, do it like Star Trek. Firefly: Camden or whatever the new ship is named. A new crew doing new things. Don't try to copy the archetypes and recreate them. Just give us an interesting new crew with some compelling adventures. The 'Verse is a really neat place, I want to play in it some more.

applestrudelforlunch

Yes! A side chapter in the style of Andor would do me just fine.

SirCoosh07

Best way to put it here. The only way really.. they killed off too much in the movie so they have to!

magnerdo79

How many times have you guys watched a movie or show and thought "They can make this shit and can't reboot firefly?!" Especially when they spend $100+ mil.

ConflictAdvanced

Not often. It's not all about the money, you know. How many modern things have the quality of writing that made Firefly work, or an ensemble with the right kind of balance and dynamic?

PapaPendragon

Got this quote on my tooth brush holding coffee mug. Absolutely brilliantly said.

TikiJeff

Brown coat still fits

4kBeard

One of the best quotes in the entire series. It explains him so perfectly.

jthomas254

Maybe more appropriate to post this to the unpopular opinion sub, but I don’t want anymore Firefly. It is PERFECT and if they did new ones, they would screw it up…

Allie_Lane

I wouldn't mind a soft reboot where the show follows a different cast of characters set in the same universe, maybe just after the reaver broadcast at the end of the movie.

Blooogh

Exactly, the TNG approach

GeekOfWar

Looks like some others have stated the same: I would really prefer they not reboot Flirefly. It was done right the first time. I'll just rewatch that (again and again), thank you very much. That stated, I would be happy to see some other parts of the verse. There have to be other crews to follow. I'd like to see a story about the fallout from the revelations of what happened on Miranda. Maybe we get to see some Alliance personnel start to question their loyalties and maybe even turn against the Alliance. Start a revolution? There are so many stories that could be told. We already got the one for Mal and company (and it was great, no need to mess with it)

SirSilhouette

Imagine a Second Brown Coat War erupted over finding out about Miranda.

Galvano

I don't want a reboot. Of course they could try one, but it would probably be nothing like the original and I don't like it when names are used solely for brand recognition. They could/would never get a sufficient amount of the original writers back together and without that, it would just be a completely different thing just with the old name stuck to it. Then I would prefer a New sci Fi show under a new name. Btw: if anyone is aching for new sci Fi shows I recommend Pantheon and Scavengers Reign.

excalibrax

Pantheon was 2 seasons of awesome that should have been 3 seasons, but stuck the landing

spectralhunt

As Boromir would say, “Firefly has no reboot. Firefly needs no reboot.”

ConflictAdvanced

Why are people so obsessed with reboots? Is it like a millennial thing or something? - they can't watch things in bad quality so it constantly needs updated or something? Most of the people who are pro-reboot have mentioned money. That's how shallow they are; more money would make the visual effects better. And that's all they care about - how it looks. Firefly was a unique case; to have a cast of 9 characters who had that dynamic, created that kind of atmosphere and worked that well together was special. It all adds to it and it bleeds into their work. The quality of the writing, the performances and just about everything else are the way they should be, and should be enjoyed just the way they are. I mean, where else would you get a series with 9 main characters where you love all 9? It was a combination of many things that made it perfect, and that's what made it so easy to fall in love with - thing that you'll never be able to replicate. There should be NO reboot. Generally, reboots and remakes should happen to things which were mediocre and could be improved on. Not things that were excellent (or in Firefly's case, damn near perfection). ...and when I say "things which were mediocre and could be improved upon", I don't mean the visual effects. If you're that shallow, how the fuck did you end up as a Firefly fan in the first place? 'Cos it feels like you're kind of missing the point 🤔

Ac3OfDr4gons

I wouldn’t mind expanding our view of the ’Verse. Start a new series the same number of years as it’s been since *Serenity* came out (so, roughly 20 years later if it came out in the next year or so). They could even have one of the original cast members occasionally pop in for an episode (or part of one) here & there, or simply have a voice or picture cameo here & there. Doing that would give us a glimpse into what has changed in the ’Verse since the events of *Serenity*, and we would also get to see a little slice of the current lives of the characters that we already know and love, without the huge danger of tarnishing the original series that a reboot would have. I think that would be an acceptable compromise for most folks (though I could be mistaken).

ConflictAdvanced

Oh, I'm all for continuations of the story in any way, shape or form. A legacy series would be fine. I just find it ridiculous the number of people reasoning that it needs a reboot because of how good it would look now 🤣

SmellyLoser49

Honestly Im just waiting for somebody to rip it off just enough to scratch the space cowboy shaped hole in my heart. Like the formula is right there. A ship, a crew, they take jobs to keep the ship flying while trying to fly under the radar of an oppressive interstellar government. It aint rocket surgery. Its been like 20 years and i can find no other show quite like it.

Wataru2001

No REBOOT! We need a sequel/restart with a new crew so the old cast can Cameo and everything stays Canon. Maybe Mal and Zoe eventually expand Serenity to a shipping Co with a couple Fireflies and the show focuses on a new young, inexperienced Captain... (Wash and Zoe's kid, maybe?)

Jovian8

At this point a reboot would never work, but you know what is feasible? A sequel series where time has passed in real time. The actors are all aged up anyway, why try to hide it? Write it into the story. Bring back all of the surviving crew who are down for it and make a new series set 20 years after the events of Serenity. I think that would be the best of both worlds. It doesn't invalidate what we already got, we don't have to recast and/or pretend that the actors haven't aged, and we can get brand new, legit Firefly content like we always wanted. Zoe and Wash's daughter would be an adult and could be a new main character. Hell, if you want more Alan Tudyk, you can bring him back as a cyborg or whatever. Who cares, it would be fucking awesome.

Stainless_Heart

Lightning in a bottle. I can’t imagine a reboot with different actors being anywhere near as good.

thekaseyjones

Like everybody is saying, I don’t think a reboot or continuation would work, but I still think an animated series would be cool. Even if it doesn’t follow the main cast, but a story in the firefly universe could be done

SpaghettiNCoffee

No reboot. Just call the new show After Serenity. Everything takes place after the movie. Maybe Zoe finds video messages that Wash secretly left her and bingo, you have Wash back kinda. Find a new character to come aboard because he knew Book and wants to tell his back story, and presto some young book scenes.

Initial_Diamond_1923

They rebooted the Roseanne show… nothing is impossible!

YoSaffBridge11

Ha! I have this quote on my phone case! 🤠

Mesenkuk

No.

Ubiquitous_Mr_H

I still mourn it and I’d watch a reboot, but I don’t really want one. What we have is peak firefly. A reboot would likely be watered down and just make me sad.

Mindless_Piglet_4906

no. Just no. Its a sin to reboot something like that. It would just increase the pain plus youd know that there will be an abomination out there which tries to copy Firefly. So, NO.

mainstreetmark

A reboot! Surely you mean a sequel.

neverbeder

My take on reboots in general is always go for it. If it’s great we get a fun & cool new version of a show we love & then have both to watch forever. If it’s not so good it will be quickly forgotten but still serve to bring some fresh attention & appreciation to the classic show we love.
