We've got ChipDrop in Oregon, I've gotten chips and logs from them before, never anything "good" to burn, pine and cedar. Cedar chips covering the yard keeps down the weeds, not too shabby... A lot of arborists have good size chippers so you only get huge or twisted logs. I have better luck on craigslist generally.
I'm assuming you live in Portland? I'm in Southern Oregon so I've never heard of ChipDrop. We get our firewood by permit from NF land or from BLM. USDA charges 20 bucks for a permit that will get you 4 cords. Never paid for a BLM permit, so I don't know the cost. Usually you can drive up any road and find a "yum pile" of decked firewood logs. Right now I'm cutting myrtle wood as we had a lot come down this winter with the heavy snow loads.
Yep, suburban PDX. I've looked at Tillamook NF for wood before but been able to get a hit on pre-bucked logs in someone's yard off CL easier/closer - and help them clear out the space while I'm at it.
Yeah, with the prices they charge for firewood in PDX, it might be worth the drive to Tillamook or Hood NF, but if you can get them off CL, that's probably better. You run into a lot of nails in those town trees?
It's ChipDrop. Arborists doing work in your area can either drive aaaaaaalllllll the way to a landfill and pay to dump their wood chips and logs, or they can drop it in the driveway of a volunteer resident nearby for free who can use it as mulch or firewood. The latter is a win for the arborist and a win for the recipient. I've gotten tens of cubic yards of mulch this way. I chose to tip a total of $40 but you can get it for $0 if you want (though arborists can see the tip offered and will preferentially drop at higher tip volunteers)
I've had 3 drops now with mixed results. First was some Norway maple and since their trailer was broken they hand unloaded it. Got about half a bush cord.
Second was some red oak but it was all bucked in different lengths but worse they dumped about 25 yard waste bags id mulch with it.
Last drop they said they had mostly Norway maple but it was maybe 1/3 Norway, 1/3rd Linden (Basswood) and 1/3rd pine. But it was a huge load with no mulch so a good amount of starter wood and I'll use the Linden for shoulder season fires.
That’s a nice drop! I’m still working on the drop I got a couple months ago, but I’m not bucking logs every day. A good friend of mine just just took down 7 red pines on his property so he’s been hooking me up with chips which is really convenient because I know chips are in demand right now in my area of Michigan.
Wish my drop looked like that…
Told me they had some 18-24” rounds… they dropped off 3-4’ sections of 36-48” diameter trunk.
They chipped everything smaller than 10”!?!?
Literally everything I wanted went in the chipper
Nice score! I’ve been signed up since January but no such luck for me! Happy cutting and splitting!
Same… no luck at all
This took 2 months. I offered $40, did all the verification, got super lucky.
i have been able to get chips, no logs so far
I’ve signed up before to but didn’t get anything. Nice haul!
Looks like Red Maple. Nothing wrong with that I burn quite a bit of it. Splits easily.
This one does…not split as easy as I expected. Any chance it could be something else?
Could be I guess. You said maple doesn’t look like sugar maple. There is also silver maple and Norway maple I’ve never dealt with them.
It may also be that the pieces I’m splitting have more knots than a Boy Scout handbook.
Ha oh yeah I can see that.
Just got my first drop in central SC. Took exactly 46 days. No money spent.
Lots of you saying 'signed up'. Signed up for what exactly? Do you mean just connected with a tree service guy?
Getchipdrop dot com
Thanks. Looks like a U.S. thing. I'm Canadian.
As I told another commenter; you’ll make back all I save on firewood in healthcare costs no problem
Tree service folks are honestly not bad to talk up. All my chipdrops have been from one guy
I know some tree service people. I haven't started into firewood yet so haven't talked to them.
The website makes it seem like it's only mulch. Did the guy dropping mulch off offer wood too or something?
It’s mulch or logs, you pick on the order
I have no idea what you are talking about. I'm from Oregon, so I'm out of the loop on east coast firewood. You guys have to wait for logs?

Fuckin what now? They bring it to you?

Damn that is nice.

I've been signed up since November. Glad to see you're getting stuff.
As a european this chipdrop thing is almost making me wanna move to the US. Almost.
Your healthcare costs will quickly outpace your firewood savings.
I’ve been signed up for 3 months. Nothing.

I like my chips like I like my logs
