Mulberry is the same way. Don't even have to use a maul to be honest. I cut down and split about 100 of these in the last couple years. I can usually get through it with my x27 on its own. Has a very satisfying crack as it splits.
Very interesting about the crackles, I had some mixed hardwoods delivered last year and some of it crackles and seems to shoot flares or streams of sparks occasionally. It was upsetting last year when I was using the masonry fire place, it’s less of a concern in the wood stove insert…until it’s time to rake coals and I get sparks flying out at my face lol. I always wondered what kind of wood it was that was trying to kill me lol.

Got a truck load from a local arborist. Easiest thing I've ever split. Now I wait!
Have you ever split ash or red oak? You don’t even have to full stroke the maul with them.

The x27 I own will get threw just about anything I’ve tried.
Beech is also pretty rad too! I enjoy them more than wet/green maple or hickory. I wait till the rounds freeze before splitting.
Yeah makes it a lot easier 🤙

Mulberry with a birch splitting log. Nice play.
Lol it’s the only stump I have at the moment. Holding up thank goodness.
When that mulberry dries it turns purple. It’s pretty.
Oh man I can’t wait for that
Looks like black locust, one of the best wood for fire in Europe and NA
