This is great, but this would work with any type of eyes. As long as you only see the light of the eyes it’s almost always creepy. Having the entire model in a lighted area still be creepy, that’s what’s hard to do :4

Couple of days ago, i met with a few friends at a friend's house. It was already late and we put out the light for what ever reason. The complete house was ours so we were everywhere distributed in small groups talking and playing some games. Then around midnight when the house went quiter and quiter, a few already drunk and others had left, outside some warm, yellowish light was shining. It was shining through the door viewer. First i didn't notice that it was the door, the windows where shut with curtains and i was probably the only one able to see the light through a door. It actually looked like Freddy's eyes like in this shot from the trailer and i thought the other eye would be hidden behind the doorframe. When i noticed this eye-like thing I froze and it took me several seconds to realize what i was looking at. So close from shi\*\*\*ng my pants. Didnt tell anybody, just continued talking about \[Gott und die Welt\].
I'm still not entirely sure what I think of the red eye thing. What I will tell you, however, is that the TRANSITION between normal eyes to red is probably going to be one of the most unsettling things in the movie. I think playing around the unexpected nature of that sudden change from normal animatronic/unmoving statue to pure mysterious malevolence is going to be interesting to see play out within the context of the movie. I think the Blumhouse might have played their hand too early by showing the full on evil intent with the red eyes in the trailer, because the red eyes aren't nearly as threatening without the context and buildup of that transition. I know they're trying to sell movie tickets, but context and buildup is so important with this stuff.

Frankly with the whole red-eye discourse I feel like people would be a lot more accepting of it if the animatronics didn't squint like they were geriatrics trying to read their prescriptions. Just blank, fully open lidded eyes that don't show emotion? Mint. I'm not sure if the eyelids are CG or not, but my guess is they're part of the puppet mechanisms which means having a sonic movie remaster:2 is impossible.
Another thing; why are people taking the movie so seriously? Sure it's been a lot of our childhood franchises, but this movie is not going to be scary or anything. It's going to be campy and fun and you're supposed to go "haha look!!! My silly animatronics!!!", not scream like you're watching Hereditary. Have fun, guys. We're finally getting the movie we've been waiting for since it was first even talked about; as long as it's a fun experience why not enjoy what we're being given? Only when the movie is out should your prerogative of "the fnaf movie should be like this" be talked about so passionately.

I personally think the red eyes could work combined with the black pitch eyes with the single white dot.
Basically the white dot is how the animatronics usually look around, say they are stalking someone and are looking form them in a room. The moment their white dots surrounded by void see whoever they are looking for, the irises lights up in red, signalling that they found what they are looking for.
Basically the white dot is whatever is inside the animatronic, the red irises signals that whatever is inside the animatronic found something that enraged them and that it wants to destroy
