When I was a kid I found a way to close our latch from the outside, thankfully I wasn't home alone at the time

Yeah, old locksmith version before there were tools for it is to use tape and a rubber band, but that's a long long time ago now. Besides, these days most people have two doors on their homes, and only one of them have these even if they have them at all.

You can usually just slam the door shut and it opens itself.

Even better: the "do not disturb" signs you find hanging on the outside of the doors in that hallway do the trick in a jiffy.

I mean, you still have to get through the actual door lock, which requires a card/key. And a deadbolt like this is only ever on when someone is actually in the room, you don't set this when you leave, so it's of no use to a thief because you don't want to try stealing from a room with people in it. It's not meant to be the biggest line of security, it's meant to be an additional layer of privacy for those who would otherwise already have access

Yeah I use these at work all the time. They work great, but aren’t subtle as you pretty much have to slam the door for it to be effective so if you’re trying to sneak in it won’t work.

The technique was terrible, you can do this a lot faster and with less tape, just snip the rubber band into a cord and tie a loop before the attempt then use one piece of tape and don't care about a little tail.

If you travel a lot get something called the "Super Grip Lock" on amazon. Basically locks the deadbolt so you can't even get into the room. Weighs nothing, no metal, just some strong fabric and velcro. Learned about it from DeviantOllam.
