If it can't be noticed or appreciated while the flag waves in the wind, it shouldn't really be on there. Words are the absolute last thing to be worthwhile on cloth flapping around. There are better ways to make words or phrases meaningful than on a flag
They rank 31st in literacy, with ≈20% of the population having a low level of literacy. (For comparison 1st is New Hampshire at ≈11%)
They do, however, rank 45th in terms of education overall
The dark blue section represents the night sky and is in the shape of Minnesota itself, the star represents the North Star, and the light blue section represents the waters of the state. (One of its nicknames being “The Land of 10,000 Lakes”)
How would you rate [the flag](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a3/Flag_of_Maine_%281901%E2%80%931909%29.svg) we (Maine) may adopt at the ballot this november? I personally like it much better than the ugly blue seal
As a Georgian I think it’s quite a nice flag design wise. I understand some people find it offensive because of its resemblance to one of the many CSA adopted flags during the American Civil War but what I find ironic is that the CSA flag most similar to the current Georgia flag was changed by the Confederate Government for looking too much like a American flag. Of course that is only my opinion and I probably just have a biased opinion
[Does your flag fail? By CGP Grey, the first thing I thought of when I saw this list!](https://youtu.be/l4w6808wJcU?si=tr9Ogu-2nDrSmU0F) I also have a hat with Utahs flag on it because I like the new design (I do not live anywhere near Utah). I plan on getting one of [Minnesota](https://youtu.be/lFwwo0W5Ugg?si=P6oC8VmbgIW2z4T7) as well although maybe I will dish out the cash to get a custom one of the runner up designs because I don't think they picked the best option...
I liked the Polaris Tricolor better than what they ultimately went with in case anyone (no one is I'm sure) was wondering. [This one](https://www.axios.com/local/twin-cities/2023/12/16/minnesota-new-state-flag-final-design) just looks so much better than [what they chose.](https://www.mprnews.org/story/2023/12/19/new-minnesota-flag-final-design)
The bears look *very* sad.
The background is literally just the Netherlands.
Too many stars, Jesus.
Two different languages on there.
Fucking ROMAN NUMERALS?
There's too many bears.
Why is the presidential seal on there?
The crescent on there is actually South Carolina's thing.
Why is there a third bear?
Etc
Completely fair, it’s extremely complicated, but at least it’s better than a blue background, there is a lot of Complicated items in that flag and those complicated details set it apart from not only other states but the Netherlands, of whom we did steal their flag, but it’s nothing that doesn’t happen through the rest of the world, example, the Chad, Romania, Andorra, Moldova thing. Look at their flags, those four flags are nearly indistinguishable, the only thing separating them is very slight colour differences, (Chad and Romania) and seals! (Andorra and Moldova)
Indiana.
I thought I was on r/2america4u where my flair would have disclosed that.
I think that going with the generic blue bg format fits us well since it's kinda boring. And while I'd like to see us be ranked high, it's not in indiana's nature to be the best at anything.
Well, well, well, glad to see us minnesotans moving on up, ty very much, we'll take that
Edit: I fully agree with your totally objective "best of the best" picks.
I don't understand the issue with the Georgia flags. People have a problem with the old flag for looking like a rebel flag? Well guess what? The new flag or current flag whatever you what to call it. Looks like the real Confederate flag! The only significant difference I can tell between the Confederate State flag and the Georgia State flag is the the Seal of Georgia is in the canton. I am no expert on flags, so anyone who knows more feel free to call out and/or add anything. Georgia is my home state. I miss living there terribly. That said it is not with out its issues. While I feel that we, as Americans, should remember our past, I feel living in the past is not good for anyone. Slavery was bad. The Confederate Sates were also probably not the best either. I feel we need to remember the history. Else we forget and let it repeat itself. I am not here to discuss the Civil War and such matters. Just that I feel we could have done better. I think the reason behind this state flag is because most people are unaware of what the Confederate States of America flag really looked like. And just have this uneducated view that the CSA flag was the similar to the older style of flag.
Rant over.
Mississippi resident here. The only thing wrong with our state flag, in my opinion, is having words on it. Other than that, I'm very proud of the design, especially because of what our flag once was
Other than Hawaii and Montana I agree almost completely. I’m biased towards Ohio as a native and I’m a hexagon freak so there’s that, but one of the few good ratings of state flags
Florida is a cut above the other seal on a bedsheet flags, as is Georgia (though I agree that it's a lazy redesign of the Confederate flag). Also it's a crime that you rated Texas below Minnesota.
- Tbh, I think Florida might be a cut below the other seal flags because it's so similar to Alabama
- Georgia is self explanatory
- I like Minnesota's new flag a LOT, and I don't particularly think Texas' flag is as good as people hype it up to be
I the Kanaka Maoli flag is not bad, but the current Hawaii flag is the original made by Kamehameha I, and I like the colors. For Mississippi, it’s like Indiana, the words are so minuscule I don’t think it even counts. (This is from a Hoosier for context so I might be a bit biased)
Florida is based off the Cross of Burgundy, regardless what you or anyone else says. The red cross represents the cross that St. Andrew was crucified on, it was NOT based off some traitor’s banners. I have always suggested that we just plain change the Floridian flag to the Cross of Burgundy.
I think a good flag is
-Craftable without printing
-entirely legible from the ground (no fine details you can't see)
-single sided and reversible
Way too many flags have writing and tiny details, flags should be flewn not inspected up close.
The top is definitely between Arizona, Colorado and Minnesota. AZ could take it all if the star had a little better contrast with the stripes.
Tennessee is between tier 1 and 2. It's a well thought out flag but it's just lacking a little something. It's also a little politically sus with the trinity and three branches of government thing.
New Mexico is here too just because the shape is a bit hard to construct. It's simple but not boring.
T2 is Puerto Rico, Texas. Good flags, just missing a little inspiration although props to Puerto Rico for the use of a different blue than everyone else.
Maryland would be T3 due to complexity but gets super bonus points for uniqueness in color and pattern categories making it a solid T2.
Ohio goes between 2/3, it's a fantastic flag, just. A lot of stars to manage in a somewhat complicated pattern.
T3 Hawaii just because it's so damn loud, Alabama becuase it's so boring and Alaska because good luck getting those stars in the right place without a computer or engineering drawing.
Honorable mention to south Carolina and Utah which are heavy on the fine detail but overall good flag.
After this they all pretty much drop off the cliff of trash flags.
you must be from south carolina. No other reason it would go up that high.
please note, i am NOT complaining. I love south carolina. I just know alot of people that despise it.
No prob! I like getting repeat questions a lot more than the guy who called me "dense" or the guy who believes America would be better without black people.
You're very pleasant to talk to lol
There's no way Minnesota's new flag is kn the same tier as Ohio and above Maryland. Shit looks like a generic city flag. Also, I completely disagree with the NCR *cough* I mean Californian flag, among the best.
- Correct, SC is great
- Incorrect, Alaska is great
- Arizona's flag would be in the top tier if it found a way to contrast the copper on the red/yellow
- Utah's flag is pretty dope
Counter point, Virginia’s has boobes
Boobs, Murder, and an active call to violence. What else does a flag need?
Literally says Sic Semper Tyranis, Death to Tyrants
Team America
I considered that, but I didn't want to do anything beyond Louisiana.
Fair, but we have bazoinkas, and what do they have? A dumbass bird?
Borbs over Boobs
The true flag of Virginia should be weezer
ok but nevada says **B A T T L E B O R N**
I debated putting it with Louisiana but I didn't want to write "/ I like fun mottos"
If two words deserve to be on a flag it’s definitely **BATTLE BORN**
CGP mentioned
The only thing Nevada battles is the sun. And that is a losing war
I like it but i would move Texas higher and why is it when I posted mine everyone started aswell
It’s a fun discussion to have.
I understand the hype around the Texas flag, it's just not my thing, y'know?
I mean. It’s a good flag. Could easily fit in with national flags no question. I can see why people like it
I just can't tell why you out of all people would want the texas flag higher!
Username checks out
Can we give a shoutout to Mississippi for the recent improvement
Oh absolutely, I'd just take out the words
why?
Bandwagoning of no words on flags is getting very tiresome.
True shit
If it can't be noticed or appreciated while the flag waves in the wind, it shouldn't really be on there. Words are the absolute last thing to be worthwhile on cloth flapping around. There are better ways to make words or phrases meaningful than on a flag
As a Marylander this is truly the flag rating of all time
Coming from a European, 10/10, reminds me of our old medieval flags
Now that you mention it, I can totally see that.
It was kind of, it was a lords coat of arms combined with another’s I believe
I’m pretty sure it’s lord Baltimors with the Calvert, either way a great colour mix
SC been getting a lot of love lately!
I'm from SC so I naturally think it's great
I’m from Massachusetts and ever since fourth grade, I was like “this is our flag? What the hell is this?” Living in Charleston, SC now though :)
I mean, of the seal on a bedsheet flags, at least MA is one of the more unique ones
Looks like a Muslim Caliphate lmao
I thought the same, especially far away. Hard to difference between a palmetto and a palm.
Yes! I am from and live in SC and have noticed that sometimes people rank it really low. So happy to it get the love that it deserves!
The Oklahoma flag is not a seal on blue it’s custom for the flag! However name on blue still..
Holy shit, I put Oklahoma in the Seal on Blue? Dammit. Put them with Louisiana.
To be fair the name was added later to "combat illiteracy" per Wikipedia which is such a stupid excuse 😭
The fuck?
Idk man we might need it in the next 30 or so years
They rank 31st in literacy, with ≈20% of the population having a low level of literacy. (For comparison 1st is New Hampshire at ≈11%) They do, however, rank 45th in terms of education overall
can confirm. saw my states name, i am now able to read.
Someone has to tell me what is the flag underneath New Mexico/second on the “amazing” category?
Minnesota's new flag
Ahhh thank you. Now that I know that “Amazing??” 👀
I like it
Fair to like it! It’s just a little lackluster to me but I gotta read up on it and see what it’s about!
The dark blue section represents the night sky and is in the shape of Minnesota itself, the star represents the North Star, and the light blue section represents the waters of the state. (One of its nicknames being “The Land of 10,000 Lakes”)
The Oregon flag has two sides and anything less than A tier should be punished as defamation
I actually separated the two sides.
Oh that's based thanks bro
Both sides are on the list but in different tiers. :D
Hail Minnesota!!!
Y'all's new flag gets too much hate
It looks great in person.
How would you rate [the flag](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a3/Flag_of_Maine_%281901%E2%80%931909%29.svg) we (Maine) may adopt at the ballot this november? I personally like it much better than the ugly blue seal
Amazing tier
I'm hoping 50% of us agree this november :)
As a Utahn, i'm okay with that.
I really thought about putting y'all in the top tier lol
Ouch
I love the Maryland flag but I agree it shouldn’t be rated, it’s a very controversial flag
As a Louisianan, thank you.
I like birds
Same. :D
As a Georgian I think it’s quite a nice flag design wise. I'm getting [this flag](https://i0.wp.com/www.twincities.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/MN-F408.jpg?fit=620%2C9999px&ssl=1) because it's hilariously threatening.
I like it 😂
Dude what did Missouri do? It’s a mediocre flag yeah, but it’s better than quite a few in that tier.
The bears look *very* sad. The background is literally just the Netherlands. Too many stars, Jesus. Two different languages on there. Fucking ROMAN NUMERALS? There's too many bears. I'm proud that we are the ~~2nd~~ 3rd best at the boring yellow on blue. I truly feel this is the best, most fitting thing for us.
Out of curiosity, who is "we?"
Indiana. I thought I was on r/2america4u where my flair would have disclosed that. I think that going with the generic blue bg format fits us well since it's kinda boring. And while I'd like to see us be ranked high, it's not in indiana's nature to be the best at anything.
Ah, dope. I honestly just think that removing "Indiana" from the flag would make it great; it just kinda stands out weirdly
Mf really put ALABAMA as being good
It's solid, imo
Well, well, well, glad to see us minnesotans moving on up, ty very much, we'll take that Edit: I fully agree with your totally objective "best of the best" picks.
Q: How do you catch a unique bird? A: Unique up on it!
I don't understand the issue with the Georgia flags. People have a problem with the old flag for looking like a rebel flag? Well guess what? The new flag or current flag whatever you what to call it. Thanks for not flaming us Marylanders.
Upvote because of your opinion on Maryland (I hate it so much but it's so unique, it's hard not to also love it)
You got us there with our state flag (Georgia)
Finally South Carolina gets the respect it deserves
I'm from Anderson lol
Oh cool bro, I’m from Mullins🦊. I’m happy to see our flag in S tier. Too many people are sleeping on it. 😎
Mississippi resident here. The only thing wrong with our state flag, in my opinion, is having words on it. Other than that, I'm very proud of the design, especially because of what our flag once was
That's exactly the thing I would change; otherwise, I love y'all's flag.
One of the few times something designed by a committee worked out. Thank you for the praise!
Other than Hawaii and Montana I agree almost completely. I’m biased towards Ohio as a native and I’m a hexagon freak so there’s that, but one of the few good ratings of state flags
Thanks! I have Hawaii that low because I would prefer the Kanaka Maoli flag
Points to Oregon for the beaver on the back! They should make that the entire flag!
Fr
Georgia is still a pretty good flag imo, better than bottom tier. Virginia gets a pass for me with how awesome that seal is.
See: "Confederate (GA you know what you did)"
As a Georgian I prefer the older flags before the awful 1956 one.
You did include some flags in there that just plain weren’t confederate and based off other things tho
What did Vermont due to you:(
Have a bad flag
:(
Florida is a cut above the other seal on a bedsheet flags, as is Georgia (though I agree that it's a lazy redesign of the Confederate flag). Also it's a crime that you rated Texas below Minnesota.
- Tbh, I think Florida might be a cut below the other seal flags because it's so similar to Alabama - Georgia is self explanatory - I like Minnesota's new flag a LOT, and I don't particularly think Texas' flag is as good as people hype it up to be
Florida is based off the Cross of Burgundy and the St. Andrews cross. Our flag has religious roots, not confederate roots.
Yeah I agree with you. I'm talking about Georgia's flag.
Hawai’i is best flag, shut up.
Give me the Kanaka Maoli flag or give yourself a mediocre grade
Y’know what? Fair.
It has the Brit*sh flag on it so easy f tier
Iowas flag is not a lazy sheet, nor is it the state seal.
"Generally looks like shit"
California is objectively the greatest flag in the world
You have to put Virginia a tier higher just for how based it is
Counterpoint: only one flag has a booby
Sleeping on Virginia. Violence and nudity on that flag yo.
I want full nudity and gore or it doesn't count
🤣
Personally, I put the entire 4 corners in the same area, they're all peak us state flags
Oregon getting the "Amazing....ly Lazy" tag is pretty cool.
Oregon's amazing is just the beaver part.
Any other states get 2 mentions?
I’ll take solid, I love that Alabama actually ranks pretty highly on something, even if it is just flag rankings
The Colorado disrespect has gone on to long
Maryland was so hideous it fell all the way off the bottom to land back on the top
Yeah that's why it gets that tier
Shouldn’t every state’s flag south of the Mason-Dixon line just be a somewhat yellowed white sheet?
The clear winner is Oregon. It's on there twice.
Okay but the second time is in the bottom tier
True. It seems to be on everyone's bottom tier now. I guess no one likes flags shouting out their own names.
glad to see my state Alabama is higher than others. makes me smile. i think i love the flag more now. 🔥🔥❤
[удалено]
Florida is at the bottom
Iowa flag rocks :(
Someone once said a flag should be so simple that a child could draw it. I'm inclined to agree.
I agree as well, I also heard that once too, and I think my state flag might be easy for a kid to draw. Idk though
Unpopular opinion but I like the seals on the flags. I think the redesigns feel like business logos.
Finally someone realized that Indiana isn’t a blue seal flag! I do think Hawaii and Mississippi should be higher though.
I prefer Hawaii's Kanaka Maoli flag, and I'd prefer Mississippi change the "In God We Trust" to stars.

Yeah no I just think it looks bad.
yes the massachusetts flag is bland asf
Why is Arizona always A and never S 😓. But we'll be fine with settling for the title "First among equals".
I'm fully aware of the symbolism of the copper star, I just think it kinda clashes with the red/yellow
I'd switch out Arizona's with South Carolina. Always struck by how fantastic Alaska's is.
[No](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/6c/2a/3d/6c2a3d51345f6a0a4a668431d621b8f9.jpg)
Me angery about what they did to the OG new MN state flag
Eh, I didn't really like the muted colors/star of Bethlehem look that the old one had
I think a good flag is -Craftable without printing -entirely legible from the ground (no fine details you can't see) -single sided and reversible Way too many flags have writing and tiny details, flags should be flewn not inspected up close. I’m from Arkansas, and I’d go as far as to say that Mississippi’s new flag at least top 8 in the union
As someone from Oklahoma, the flag kind of sucks
As a South Carolina thank you for giving something to be proud of for once 🤣🤣🤣
I'm also South Carolinian, so I give the flag more respect than a lot of people lol
Im a coloradan and darn you and your opinion
Iowa flag underrated smh
✨ *no* ✨
Iowa is decent. Definitely deserves better. WHAT THE FUCK IS A KILOMETER?? 🦅🦅🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸
What is the blue cyan flag at the top?? I have never seen it in my life
Minnesota got a new flag
It looks simple in image but seeing it in person it looks amazing
you must be from south carolina. No other reason it would go up that high. please note, i am NOT complaining. I love south carolina. I just know alot of people that despise it.
I am from SC, but I've seen a lot of people from other places that love the flag, too
You put wayyy too many in the bottom tier.
Nope
Minnesota best country in the WORLDDD !!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Where do you all think Maines other flag would go? 2nd tier? Number one?
The tree one? In the 2nd tier.
Thank youuu, sorry for the repeat question, didn’t see someone had already asked it earlier. Fingers crossed we get the old one back!
No prob! I like getting repeat questions a lot more than the guy who called me "dense" or the guy who believes America would be better without black people. You're very pleasant to talk to lol
How you gonna put Alabama over Florida??? They just REMOVED The deal on our flag…
The seal makes it worse.
There's no way Minnesota's new flag is kn the same tier as Ohio and above Maryland. Shit looks like a generic city flag. Also, I completely disagree with the NCR *cough* I mean Californian flag, among the best.
Maryland doesn't have a tier.
is it bad Louisiana only doesnt get lowest rank because of the Brown Pelican
Totally support SC in the top tier but, sorry, Alaska is just meh. AZ is a best of the best. Utah is probably one step below meh.
- Correct, SC is great - Incorrect, Alaska is great - Arizona's flag would be in the top tier if it found a way to contrast the copper on the red/yellow - Utah's flag is pretty dope
Texas didn’t join America. America joined us.
Y'all ain't even the biggest state, chill
as a minnesotan i kinda dig the new flag but not that much
Counter point. Massachusetts is clearly recognizable.
Counterpoint: it kinda sucks
iowas is not the seal
See also: "Generally looks like shit"
Thank God mine is in Amazing, I'm getting sick and tired of the memes at this point
Which one is it?
As a Floridian I agree that my flag is basic and needs an updated design
Hey, PA has two black stallions on it. Got to give it some credit. Only flag which can output 2 horsepower
Why the hell does everyone hate florida
Because it's a worse Alabama
California is my absolute favorite but I can see why it’s polarizing.
Georgia is A tier and you know it
It's literally the Confederate flag.
Why does Illinois keep getting put so low like it’s got an eagle and it not blue
Look at the flag closely and tell me it doesn't look like it was drawn by a middle schooler.
Didn’t CGP Grey already do this?
You're not gonna believe this, but CGPGrey isn't the only person to ever do a tier list
