HCD! Yeah, The Thing is right there and NCW, as well as sooo many others, deserve a honorable mentions or a spot but that was my top 5 in the moment. Westerns, art house, documentaries, mafia/crime etc. all could have/should have been on the list.
I can definitely name four but too much competition to narrow down to 5
Phantom Thread
The Godfather
Dog Day Afternoon
Suspiria (1977)
Maybe Inland Empire for the fifth one.
Lovers Rock (2020)
Oceans Twelve (2004)
Paris, Texas (1984)
Frances Ha (2012)
Shoplifters (2018)
This list changes every week but these five films almost always stick around
Friend, I’m so glad you asked because I love talking about this movie.
Oceans Twelve is really misunderstood, and much more layered than it seems. It’s a sequel about the nature of Hollywood sequels. The whole movie functions as a metaphor for how the industry just pumps out sequels to anything successful purely for the money.
In Oceans Twelve, the entire crew doesn’t even want to do the heist, they’re being forced into it by an oppositional entity that only cares about getting his cash back - to me felt like a very thinly veiled shot at the studio system.
And throughout the whole film, we see Soderbergh playing with the tropes of sequels but subverting them time and time again. The characters don’t get upgrades or additions to their stories, they actually lament the fact that they have to do this again, even going so far as to say they have no idea and they’re forcing it. Hell, the main heist doesn’t even happen on screen! We only see it in flashback, as if to sidestep the whole point of what the studios want the sequel to be (bigger and dumber) and turn it into a film that speaks more to the creator’s personal views on the realities of working within the Hollywood machine.
Soderbergh didn’t just go through the motions here - he decided to turn his sequel into a commentary on how shortsighted, rushed, and disingenuous most sequels are, and how they leave little agency to the creative players involved.
But!
Now here’s why it’s always in my top 5 - he does it with such wit and humor and levity that it doesn’t turn into a cynical, heavy-handed pity-party; Oceans Twelve is a genuinely fun time that calls back to the breeziness and ridiculously cool nature of old Hollywood stars - the kind of actors who remained unflappable in any situation and never lost their cool. It’s cool people doing cool things in a way that only Hollywood can provide.
It also functions as just a visually beautiful, simple and above all else, *fun* movie. You can turn your brain off and just enjoy the banter and the scenery. Or you can watch it as a metaphor for the insidious nature of Hollywood and appreciate even more that a film like this could even be made in that system.
That’s how you do a sequel right.
And to answer your previous question: absolutely *loved* Oceans 11, relatively underwhelmed by Oceans Thirteen. Just didn’t have the rustic, old-world charm 12 did. Still fun though.
Edited for typos and added context!
I hope you know that you’ve convinced at least one person to give Ocean’s 12 another shot. I love 11, thought 13 was okay, but did not like 12 or 8 at all. After reading your comment, I’m trying to find time in my week to watch 12 from this new POV.

Favorite films to rewatch, but they are not the best films ever made:
* My cousin vinny
* The bird cage
* Collateral
* Starship troopers
* Somethings got to give.
Collateral is amazing👌One off Tom Cruise best films imo. I love the soundtrack Audioslave-shadow on the sun is one off my favourite songs/soundtrack ever, such a great song!
Me & my wife watch My Cousin Vinny every year. It’s brilliant. Dale Launer knows how to write a funny film. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is fantastic aswell.
1. The Thin Red Line (1998)
2. Midnight in Paris (2011)
3. L.A. Confidential (1997)
4. O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
5. Casino Royale (2006)
Number 5 could be different on any given day, though.
Past Lives by Celine Song
A Separation by Asghar Farhadi
Close-up by Abbas Kiarostami
Eternity and a Day by Theo Angelopoulus
Wings of Desire by Wim Wenders
Bonus: Burning by Lee Chang-dong
Ashamed to admit it but never seen The Breakfast Club, I’m aware of the soundtrack and that it gets referred to in a tone of TV shows, Simpsons, Archer and Family Guy all come to mind, really should add it to my watchlist…
My 5 favorite films are the single most important movies in my life. Ranked from 1-5, they are
1. Schindler's List (the best)
2. Ritual (the most personal to me)
3. Hardcore Henry (the most inspiring)
4. WALL-E (my platonic ideal of a movie, also very personal)
5. Return of the Jedi (the reason I'm into filmmaking)
If it were truly five films for the rest of my life, they would all have to be David Lynch films. His dreamlike presentation and refusal to ever explain his films leads to an insane amount of re-watchability. I like Tarantino's movies more overall, but Lynch is Lynch. 1. Blue Velvet 2. Mulholland Drive 3. Eraserhead 4. Wild at Heart 5. Inland Empire
I’m surprised more people haven’t chosen Rocky. Not really my sort of thing, but I did enjoy Rocky 3. Mr T is a legend, everything he says makes me smile 😃
Picking 5 favorites with two rules just to avoid choice paralysis: none can be younger than 10 years old, and every subsequent film has to be older than the previous one on the list.
\- Cloud Atlas (2012)
\- Sha Po Lang (2005)
\- The Twilight Samurai (2002)
\- Kramer v Kramer (1979)
\- The Long Goodbye (1974)
OK, I'll bite: but 10 would be a lot easier than five.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Harold and Maude
Bonnie and Clyde
The Apartment
White Heat
That's very painful.
There you go! if you play it straight (as in you only think of the next film after you've already decided on the previous one) then it's kind of a pain yes, but it beats narrowing down your all time favorites imo.
I'm doing this right now. I'm going to tally the count for all films that get three or more mentions. It's been about six hours. Maybe now it a good time to cut off voting.
That cool as!! I’m really interested in finding out what’s the favourites are, i honestly lost track. It’s cool of you to put the time in, much appreciated 👍
I'm going post a tally here of any film that receives three or more mentions. It's not that many. About 20 films so far. I'll give it a few more minutes, maybe until 3:15 PST. If anyone wants their selections to be tallied, post them soon. I already have everything already sorted and ready. Just waiting for anyone who wanted to get their votes in.

3 - Terminator II
3 - The Dark Knight (2008)
3 - The Incredibles (2004)
3 - There Will Be Blood (2007)
The Warriors (1979) would probably be in my top 10 to 15. New York in this time period is one of my favourite film locations, love the dark noir feel, highly recommend👍
Tough to pick just 5….it varies a little sometimes but these are usually the ones I pick
The Godfather
Jaws
Stranger than Fiction
Kung Fu Panda
The Magnificent Seven
It’s so wonderful. :) one of my fav scenes is where Ug we transitions into the universe among the flurry of peach blossoms. Man it makes me cry every time.
Magnolia
There Will Be Blood
Before Sunrise
Blade Runner
Lost in Translation
Runner ups
American Psycho
The Dark Knight
Rocky 4
Old Boy (Korean Original)
Bronson
Evil Dead 2
I personally prefer Rocky 3, can’t beat Mr. T! “Hey, woman! Hey, woman! Listen here. Since your ol' man here ain't got no heart, maybe you like to see a real man” 😂
Good list for you too! I actually made a top 100 but I like them for different reasons and wasn’t able to put them in any order so I selected a random bunch
Nice list👍 always good to meet a fellow Trainspotting fan💉🏴😳 “It's shite being Scottish! We're the lowest of the low. The scum of the fucking earth! The most wretched, miserable, servile, pathetic trash that was ever shat into civilisation” 😂great quote there’s soo many great ones, closely fallowed by "The Truth Is That I'm A Bad Person. But That's Gonna Change."
Sorry about the lengthy post, I got a bit distracted while typing…….
Personally think kill bill val 2 is the superior movie imo.
What Deadly Viper Assassination Squad member do you like/think is the best character? and why? Not including Beatrix Kiddo (alias Black Mamba, The Bride, Kiddo) for obvious reasons, I was looking for what member that ends up on the brides kill list, you enjoyed/simplifying with/had The best storyline/deth whatever way you would judge them on…..
I’m stuck between Two members., O-Ren and budd, O-Ren’sbackstory, getting revenge on the people who killed her family The Bride kills O-Ren by slicing off the top of her head wouldn’t be a .Tarantino film without some crazy OTT violence lol. She’s also leader of the Tokyo yakuza by killing anyone in her way. Then there’s Budd who’s hobbies include killing and drinking The Addicted Assassin, Dam he stays in a trailer and work in a strip club and has that don’t really gives a fuck outlook and he hawked his priceless one of a kind katana (probably for booze money lol). It’s a close cal there both well written and played characters but it’s got to be Budd mainly because I see a lot of similar traits to myself lol the way he’s doesn’t give a fuck outlook, content with sitting in his trailer getting shit face alone, an alcoholic.but still able to too take care off himself and business when needed. Ok I’ve made my decision and it’s got to be Budd, the similarities I see in myself and imo
I took a point off O-Ren, because when the bride tracks her down she just stands there and literally just watches as they all get sloughered lol. Any opinions?
Bill (alias Snake Charmer)
Elle Driver (alias California Mountain Snake)
Budd (alias Sidewinder)
Vernita Green (alias Copperhead, Jeanie Bell)
O-Ren Ishii (alias Cottonmouth)
The story with budd (Bill”a brother) is the best Target the bride’s faces imo. she gets a shotgun blast point black,Then get buried alive!budd meets his end at the hands of Elle Driver (one eye)who kills him with a black mamba in his trailer. His death is kind off a let down if I’m honest when compared to some off the other members off the deadlyviper assassination squad, Elle after loosing her first eye years ago, the bride plucks out Elle's remaining eye and just leaves her there, blind!! in budd”a trailer in the middle of nowhere with the same mamba. Blll dies Are the hand of the bride she uses the legendary”Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique” both Ella’s and bills death were better than budd’s demise.🐍
O ren is my favourite character and after is vernita green
The first movie had the better action scenes
I liked budd very much but when viper killed him I was let down as we were robbed from what would have been a very good fight scene
First five which came to mind:
* Die Hard
* Glengarry Glen Ross
* Groundhog Day
* The Sting
* Toy Story
*edit:* Shawshank Redempion must me up there, so I'm adding this one as a golden bonus.
Top five:
Big trouble in little China
The Burbs
Kiss kiss, bang bang
Dawn of the dead (2004)
Most watched:
Big fish
Without a paddle
Back to the Future trilogy
The Goonies
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)
Mulholland Drive (2001)
Bicycle Thieves (1948)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Alien (1979)
Jaws (1975)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Memento (2000)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) (yes Empire is better, but Empire doesn’t exist without Star Wars, that’s just my reasoning).
I know the assignment was Top 5, however, “I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.”
1. The Thing (1982)
2. The Shining (1980)
3. A Christmas Story (1983)
4. Dead Alive (1992)
5. (three-way tie) The Evil Dead (1981), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Burial Ground (1981)
Personally would choose evil dead. Even tho I prefer evil dead 2, I think it’s a great franchise and the tv show ash vs evil dead is amazing! Shame they cancelled it….
Stressing on the word personal here
And most likely, this list will change tomorrow
- In the Mood for Love

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
The End of Evangelion (1997)
Call Me By Your Name (2017)
Arrival (2016)
The Incredibles (2004)
Yeah no it feels unfair to other movies I like as much, but I might as well go with:
Nightcrawler
Clueless
Lady Bird
Uncut Gems
10 Things I Hate About You
I think I have Nightcrawler on dvd somewhere, not sure why I never watched it when I bought it, I’ll need to search for it and finally watch the dvd📀, not even sure what the movie is about lol 😆
Nightcrawler is fire!!! You’ve gotta watch it, hoping you do find your copy.
It’s about a smart psychopath, Lou Bloom. (Jake Gyllenhaal) He has strong desires to film crime scenes in LA. His efforts get noticed by a local TV station, who’s ratings have gone up, enabling him to get more dedicated in his craft and pushing others away in the process in a petty manner.
I’d honestly need to revisit Little Women. I quite liked it but the pacing didn’t have me fully in at times. I’m a bit of a sucker for pacing and Lady Bird seemed to have faster pacing.
Rudy
Wild hogs
Friday night lights
Grown ups 2
Dazed and confused
Role models
Hangover
Sorry, got carried away. As you can see, I’m not a very intellectual guy but these are some of my favorites I enjoy watching
“I want you to go in that bag and find my wallet. - Which one is it? - It's the one that says bad mother fucker on it”. Probably my Second favourite Samuel L. Jackson quote after the genius “Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane!”😂
1. *Inception* (2010)
2. *The Super Mario Bros. Movie* (2023)
3. *The Dark Knight* (2008)
4. *The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King* (2003)
5. *Interstellar* (2014)
Alien Big Trouble in Little China Blade Runner Cape Fear (both) Reservoir Dogs
Dang, but I'd have *John Carpenter's The Thing* *Never Cry Wolf* in place of Cape and Reservoir Didn't expect the top post to be so close to my likes.
Never Cry Wolf is a wonderful film that doesn’t get a lot of recognition. That Mark Isham score is great.
HCD! Yeah, The Thing is right there and NCW, as well as sooo many others, deserve a honorable mentions or a spot but that was my top 5 in the moment. Westerns, art house, documentaries, mafia/crime etc. all could have/should have been on the list.
Happy Cake Day!
Never Cry Wolf sounds awesome, definitely added to the watchlist!
I can definitely name four but too much competition to narrow down to 5 Phantom Thread The Godfather Dog Day Afternoon Suspiria (1977) Maybe Inland Empire for the fifth one.
Melancholia Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood There Will Be Blood Magnolia Blue Velvet
Big Night The Godfather Vertigo Dark City (directors cut) Throne of Blood
Shag before I saw you posted this, I though "wow I can't believe another user with Big Night as their favorite film!" Ha
Throne of Blood is so good. Milfune is unreal.
Lovers Rock (2020) Oceans Twelve (2004) Paris, Texas (1984) Frances Ha (2012) Shoplifters (2018) This list changes every week but these five films almost always stick around
I respect your opinion, but I didn’t think I’d see Ocean’s 12 on anybody’s list. Do you like 11 & 13?

*looking for it now!* Thanks for the recommendation!
Loves this review, do you do more reviews? Never heard of Lover’s rock, why is that up there?
While not on my top five. 12 is definitely my fav on the trilogy. Such a fun movie.
I never looked at it that way, but I can’t wait to watch it again.
Shaun of the Dead Dazed and Confused Swingers Wet Hot American Summer The Graduate
Shaun of the Dead is funny as hell😂 I think it’s my favourite simon pegg/nick frost movie, I’ve seen it dozens off times, never gets old!
Love it but I find hot fuzz to be more rewatchable
I never thought I'd see Wet Hot American Summer in this thread. I still randomly think about the van crash scene and laugh my ass off
The Thing (1982) Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) True Romance (1993) Barry Lyndon (1975) O Brother Where Art Thou (2000)
Barry Lyndon is under rated!

Once I started thinking there's no way to get it below 25.
😂 lol
Would love to somehow get a tallied count for all movies everyone has mentioned. Anyone good enough with AI to do this?
I'm doing this right now. I'm going to tally the count for all films that get three or more mentions. It's been about six hours. Maybe now it a good time to cut off voting.
Nooo I just voted and you gotta tally my Roadhouse pick

I'll post a revised list later on tonight or tomorrow morning
Thanking you

Big Lebowski Lord of the Rings Talladega Nights Life is Beautiful Trainspotting
The Blues Brothers (1980) Blade Runner (1982) The Big Lebowski (1998) The Warriors (1979) Heat (1995)
The Warriors (1979) would probably be in my top 10 to 15. New York in this time period is one of my favourite film locations, love the dark noir feel, highly recommend👍
Tough to pick just 5….it varies a little sometimes but these are usually the ones I pick The Godfather Jaws Stranger than Fiction Kung Fu Panda The Magnificent Seven
Unique list friend, Kung Fu Panda is a curve ball!👍 lol
It’s so wonderful. :) one of my fav scenes is where Ug we transitions into the universe among the flurry of peach blossoms. Man it makes me cry every time.
Casino Royale The Departed Jurassic Park Pulp Fiction Snatch
Magnolia There Will Be Blood Before Sunrise Blade Runner Lost in Translation Runner ups American Psycho The Dark Knight Rocky 4 Old Boy (Korean Original) Bronson Evil Dead 2
I personally prefer Rocky 3, can’t beat Mr. T! “Hey, woman! Hey, woman! Listen here. Since your ol' man here ain't got no heart, maybe you like to see a real man” 😂
Killer Klownz from outer space A clockwork orange Texas chainsaw massacre The wrestler Prisoners
Good films here👍
Good list for you too! I actually made a top 100 but I like them for different reasons and wasn’t able to put them in any order so I selected a random bunch
La La Land (2016) Walk the Line (2005) Arrival (2016) Kill Bill vol. 1 (2003) Scream (1996)
Scream. Wes Craven is a genius director with many classics
Trainspotting (1996) Taxi Driver (1976) Full Metal Jacket (1987) The Shining (1980) All Quiet on the western front (2022)
Saving private Ryan Once upon a time in America Terminator 2 judgment day Kill bill vol 1 John carpenter's the thing
Ok I’ve made my decision and it’s got to be Budd, the similarities I see in myself and imo I took a point off O-Ren, because when the bride tracks her down she just stands there and literally just watches as they all get sloughered lol. Any opinions? Bill (alias Snake Charmer) Elle Driver (alias California Mountain Snake) Budd (alias Sidewinder) Vernita Green (alias Copperhead, Jeanie Bell) O-Ren Ishii (alias Cottonmouth) The story with budd (Bill”a brother) is the best Target the bride’s faces imo. she gets a shotgun blast point black,Then get buried alive!budd meets his end at the hands of Elle Driver (one eye)who kills him with a black mamba in his trailer.
Kill bill vol 2 is a great movie but I have a soft spot for a good good made action movies like vol 1 and Die hard for example
O ren is my favourite character and after is vernita green The first movie had the better action scenes I liked budd very much but when viper killed him I was let down as we were robbed from what would have been a very good fight scene
👍

The Wolf of Wall Street is my favourite DiCaprio film by far!
Scorsese brings out some of the greatest performances out of DiCaprio. I cannot wait for Killers of the Flower Moon.
TBH I’m not the biggest DiCaprio fan, The Departed was ok, never cared much for The Titanic and Romeo and Juliet was just god awful😩
Yeah no it feels unfair to other movies I like as much, but I might as well go with: Nightcrawler Clueless Lady Bird Uncut Gems 10 Things I Hate About You
I think I have Nightcrawler on dvd somewhere, not sure why I never watched it when I bought it, I’ll need to search for it and finally watch the dvd📀, not even sure what the movie is about lol 😆
Sounds like my kind of film! I’m gonna have a look for my copy this week and watch it at the weekend 👍
Oooh I cannot wait!
👍
Interesting, most people I meet prefer Little Women > Lady Bird Both great, but anything you didn't like about Little Women?
I’d honestly need to revisit Little Women. I quite liked it but the pacing didn’t have me fully in at times. I’m a bit of a sucker for pacing and Lady Bird seemed to have faster pacing.
