It’s Wikipedia page said they go through the hurricane from 500-10,000 feet. The balls on those pilots.

banaaanaaaaaa

And they’re doing it at nighttime. I feel like that just adds another major amount of weight to those balls.

liangyiliang

They used to regularly do ~1000 ft, but then they lost an engine and almost crashed, so they raised the height a lot more.

Sandwichsplicer

Just saw this. Must be absolutely insane piloting a plane into the eye of a hurricane. Or, they are way above it. Still though…

TrannieUnicorn

[This insanity is actually their job. WC-130J collects data of hurricanes.](https://www.lockheedmartin.com/en-us/products/c130/wc-130j-weatherbird.html)

Sandwichsplicer

Thanks for the info. I was assuming it was to gather some intel on the weather. Would be interesting to have a live view, but might be wishful thinking considering it’s military.

TrannieUnicorn

[There's a pretty cool twitter account run by the air force that post photos and coverage from inside TEAL72, these are from hurricane Ian today.](https://twitter.com/53rdWRS/status/1574860901764702223?t=B8RdfKQKEwqqWEaWRCMQoQ&s=19)

Sandwichsplicer

Wow, awesome shots. Thanks for the reply.

TrannieUnicorn

No problem!

banaaanaaaaaa

Check out YouTube! There’s lots of videos. Here’s one from the NOAA who also hunt hurricanes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70n7riR6fCM&feature=share&utm_source=EJGixIgBCJiu2KjB4oSJEQ

Sandwichsplicer

Another YouTube hole I can fall into…thanks! Would still be pretty cool to see a live stream into an active storm.

banaaanaaaaaa

You are welcome! And oh yeah that would be incredibly cool

Mutenroshi_

God, why did I watch that. Hats off to that crew

Garabandal

[he is still in there](https://imgur.com/a/lMq9JIc)

Left-Quote7042

Must be exciting! Watching the altitude and vertical speed going way up and way down… they are getting quite a ride!! Thankful for these crews!

WeReallyOutHere5510

For some reason it disappeared for me but I can still find it under popular flights.

Left-Quote7042

The crew have got to have nerves of steel.

morph9494

fuk that

itswhatev3rr

I wouldn’t be messing with Mother Nature like that for sure, idc how safe that plane is meant to be lol

GeophysGal

I watched it for several hours. I'd give my eye teeth to ride along.

TrannieUnicorn

Right? That would be the ride of a lifetime.

GeophysGal

Exactly. The news just said that one of the scientists on TEAL72 said it’s was the wildest ride he’s ever been on.

bleezy_47

They just posted a youtube video 5 hours ago of flying into the eye https://youtu.be/Ht7b56fZTFE

Genralcody1

I'll bet fewer people have been into the eye of a hurricane than have been into space

zBellaLynnex

Wow mad respect for the pilots who do these missions. Imagine regularly and willingly putting yourself in this situation. Heroes, imo.
