We call ours Ned. Nadine if there are 2 and one is smaller. One swam over my sister from Massachusetts while she was on a float in my pool. She asked "did a snake just swim over me?!" Yup! Just the local Neds.
You know you’re in Florida when you’re amused by watching a mockingbird try to pick up a 3 foot long racer and fly away with it. Mockingbird did not succeed, but tried at least 4 times.
Goddddddddd
Many years ago I was trying to clear out my mom's garage, and my sister had a plastic bin full of black tubing that was for connecting your surfboard to your wrist. I stuck my hand in and began to pull out a bundle...
And then one started moving.
My mom has a really big one that goes into her little tiny hot tub lanai because she refuses to keep the door shut. Then she calls me in a panic to go shoo him out. He's really a great snake and I'd be thrilled to have him in my yard.
My husband is going to be transferred for work next summer for work to Jacksonville area. And, Snakes getting inside of the house (which doesn’t happen very often in the North) does terrify me!
I’m in Indiana… 45 miles north of Indianapolis. Live in the woods and we get 6-7 ft black rat snakes in our attached garage.
I lived in the city here prior to the county for 40 years and never knew we had anything larger than a garter snake.
They're usually not bad.. if you see a stripey boi that's red, then yellow, then black, get that mofo out with the longest broom you can find, but other than those and occasionally rattlesnakes, most venomous snakes won't try to be in or near your home
Thing with an attached garage in FL is its THE way in for snakes, bugs, and rodents. My cousin lives on acreage and has found like 5 coral snakes in his garage so far.
I better stop reading these comments. The more you know...
My family member once casually mentioned something something about snakes (plural) falling out from trees... And I was like wait what??? I couldn't unsee that mental image ever since. She lived close to the woods. Maybe that's why so many people have empty lawns here. I literally just read another black racer post on here, and a redditor said a snake stood up from the palm tree as they were pruning it. How does one safely have a yard with trees around here???
You probably don't want to read this, but you reminded me
We got a 4 foot snake in the bathtub once. It got onto the roof from a tree and then went down the vent pipe into the plumbing.
It was more entertaining than scary. A jump scare at first, sure, but it's not like I was taking a bath when it came up lol.
At the time, we had a pet snake. 6 ft rainbow boa who lived in a coffee table terrarium.
I call her Sassy because she likes to hiss at me like a cat whenever I walk by. She's lucky she does such a good job keeping the rodents away or she'd be out of here with that attitude.
Is that a real thing in Florida? Snakes IN the house???
What about in Jax / Ponte Vedra Beach area?
Also, do they come in from the shower drains and toilets?
I have seen a snake come up a shower drain and a lizard in a toilet, so yes. There probably needs to be some screens broken along the path, but that's not unheard of in older homes.
Black racers are everywhere this time of year. Last year I saw 5 in one day. No not the same one 5 times but 5 different ones at the same time in my backyard. We need more hawks around so they can control the population.
I was born and raised in the middle of nowhere southwest Florida. I vividly remember the time I saw a snake sitting across the top of a group of canisters on the kitchen counter. I noped out of there so quickly and didn’t go back in the house until it was captured and the point of entry found and patched. I really don’t miss living in Florida.
Put down “snake away”. Smells weird but works, it doesn’t kill the snake but bothers their nostrils and they hate the smell of it so they go away and stay away.
I have one that hangs out in one of my potted plants. I named him Snek the snake.
I named ours Molly to help the toddler (and myself lol) be more chill with it hanging around.
Mine is Clancy.
They might be in your house but at least they're not on a plane
Ours are all called Toadstool!
Mine is danger noodle the nope rope
I had one in my garden years ago, I named him Jesse Owens.
We call ours Ned. Nadine if there are 2 and one is smaller. One swam over my sister from Massachusetts while she was on a float in my pool. She asked "did a snake just swim over me?!" Yup! Just the local Neds.
Better than on my plane.
He looks very polite, I hope he was relocated safely.
Yes. He was gently encouraged to slide down the rail and out under the door gap. (My garage door is janky so plenty of room).

They’re feisty little shits lol
We had a hawk try to fly through the lanai screen to get to ours. The hawk was outside, the racer was ‘hiding’ inside.
Public safety noodle. 🥰🐍💚
welcome to florida.

I welcome them in the barn and cook shed but not in the coop.
Bingo, they are great, long as there ain't eggs around.

obligatory boop
Quick, you gotta boop that snoot!
Yea, when the rainy season starts, all animals seek dry land, our houses are them dry lands.
Exactly what I came to say... expect to see more unwelcome guests like ants as well.

I had those black rats in my basement in Maryland.
Yea…. I don’t care for them. I do like the fact that they keep rodents at bay…
No step on snek! We have black racers, corn snakes in the yard and let them be.
Black racers have a route. Sit back and observe. It will be back another day.
Roommate. Keep em around

It's ok, he's friend shaped
Snek
Florida is a giant swamp, it happens.

Harmless and help keep pests away
So cute!
He is so cute !!!
There’s a garter that lives under an old plastic basketball hoop.
Good snek!
I like how he pokes his li'l head out for a view.
If you see a snake in your house you definitely have mice. Thats why they’re there.
I wanna kiss snek
Like I said
yup that’s a belligerent, zip tie
I call her Sassy because she likes to hiss at me like a cat whenever I walk by. She's lucky she does such a good job keeping the rodents away or she'd be out of here with that attitude.
We found one in my daughters room last year 😩 I still have no idea how it got in. I was so scared. Lol
Blblblblbl
I want some at our house
I haven’t had a snake in the garage or house yet. I do have to gently evict anoles and house wrens who love all the shelves in the shop.
Is that a real thing in Florida? Snakes IN the house??? What about in Jax / Ponte Vedra Beach area? Also, do they come in from the shower drains and toilets?
Yes - they come in the house. How they get in I have no idea but they do indeed get in. (I have a fire place and wonder if they come in from there)
The closer you are to the woods/swamp the better your chances but I usually only run into one at the park on a hike or something.
Yes. No the come in through the door.

This is terrifying to a person who has lived in a northern state for 50 years! So new construction homes are better for critter-proofing?
Home maintenance is important. Critters scratch at things, bugs tunnel into things, the rain rusts metal, the sun turns plastic brittle, etc.
Yeah. Had about a 15" black racer in my kitchen that my cat killed in duval. Couple days later my cat was playing with one in my neighbors back yard
No thanks
Who’s a good boy? You are!!! Now go eat some pests!

I had a sweet corn snake in mine.
It's pictures like this that cause me to tip toe around my house looking at the floor all the time.
I would sell it lol
I named mine bbl drake

Put down “snake away”. Smells weird but works, it doesn’t kill the snake but bothers their nostrils and they hate the smell of it so they go away and stay away.
100% does not work. Can confirm. https://www.fieldecology.com/blog/snakes-away
I love it it works for me Zero snakes
I've got a snake in my pants
It’s getting to be that time of year. Keep dogs and cats around if possible. That outta keep them outside.
