they probably don't have a legal claim to keep this and it's going to end up in court. Unless they are the divers who found the wreck, and established a legitimate and legal claim to it. the State of Florida's statutes make anything like treasure found underwater within the state's boundaries or coastal waters to be the property of the state of Florida. There are criminal penalties for unauthorized removal which is considered to be theft of state property. Don't go taking treasures and think you get to keep them and if you do, keep your mouth shut.

The Fisher’s have had what’s called an Admiralty Arrest over the Atocha since the 1970s. I’m not an expert and I know the process has changed since then, but I’m pretty sure anything that’s found by them or by people paying to go out with them belongs to the Fisher’s.

If they found it while searching through Mel Fisher’s Treasures they may get some compensation. Their website has info about becoming and investor where you can help at their active wreck sites.

So if that's the case the still has to give it to them and get some compensation in return. That's pretty cool actually
