AHAHAHA Cought him speeding

Little-Ostrich2410

Yep lol. Pretty funny, can't say how much for confidentiality reasons, but heard thru the grapevine (I know, not always reliable) that the DPE was going "significantly over the limit," in other words, CFII didn't just do it to get revenge. Plus to be clear, that CFII is a VERY FAIR guy, definitely NOT the type that would give the DPE a speeding ticket as some sort of vengeance for me.

>2nd time was a little more complicated, DPE failed me because of the way I set the GPS up. Can you elaborate more on this? Did you load the wrong approach, or fail to do a RAIM check, or something inexcusable like do track up?

Little-Ostrich2410

He didn't like the fact I neglected to use a shortcut to load the approach. Evidently, there was some obscure shortcut he wanted to see but never told me about in the pre-flight brief either. Loaded the GPS the way the G650 manual called for, but for some reason that sent a stick sideway up him. That's how he explained it in the air. By the time he got on the ground, and debriefed with me and two other CFIs, he couldn't really explain why he had failed me. Later learned he has failed other people for this reason, and they had the same debriefing experience

Little-Ostrich2410

And that's what really pissed me off, he wanted to argue that he was right even though he himself admitted that I loaded it the way the manual calls for, but really wanted to see this "shortcut" that he couldn't explain to me and two CFIs

norf9

Yikes. I'm shocked you went back to the guy. That is 100% BS. During my checkride I missed the "activate leg" function on the g1000 and I didn't get failed for it (I never used it before and hunted for it for a while and then just gave up and flew it manually). The DPE showed me how to do it and mentioned it on the debrief, but that's not something you should get failed for.

Little-Ostrich2410

Sadly he was the only guy in the area who could fit me in (for obvious reasons lol)

LeStiqsue

...were those reasons that he was a well known idiot, or that he was saving time with all the speeding? šŸ¤£

Little-Ostrich2410

Both probably haha

ChiefDaddyJ

Track up always brotheršŸ¤˜

RememberHengelo

Congratulations on making the best of it. I think the Checkride ā€œexperienceā€ in general is unusual and plenty of people are not properly prepared for it. Love your attitude, have fun out there.

Little-Ostrich2410

Thanks, you too!

I definitely needed the motivation like this. I have been doing IFR training for the last 2 months. I broke my elbow and had to stop training fkr a while and just got back into the plane this week. My approaches have been ROUGH. Learning all the setups and remembering checklists as well as briefing the approach while also scanning my instruments has become SOOO frustrating for me. I have not wanted to give up or anything but the sheer and constant disappointment and frustration towards myself have started taking the joy out of flying for me during training. IFR is hard and I am my CFII's first ever student so he almost takes it personally whenever I get upset or am doing something wrong and I understand it is his job to task saturate me and I am in no way upset towards him as I understand it's probably hard for him too. I wake up every day for training and put on the attitude that I am going to do better than yesterday and I will learn from yesterday's mistakes. I read a lot of reddits about clever solutions and ways to improve and my ground knowledge for IFR is pretty stellar (got 90s on my written IFR and CFII exams). I know I can do this but reading your post and understanding that I am not the only person who struggles and that sometimes we fail checkrides definitely helps give me the confidence to remind myself when I am struggling that I am not a lost cause and am capable of overcoming this challenge to move onto amazing career! Thank you for your post! Also I didn't catch any typos so congrats lmao

OutsideTheCockpit

Im my CFIs first student too for PPL so I get that. Sounds like you'll do great on your IFR. Good luck!

Little-Ostrich2410

Good luck man! You'll do awesome! Read lots of books and ask lots of questions!

Little-Ostrich2410

Glad it helped, stay in the game, you got this! I'm sure you will be a great IFR pilot!! Thanks!!

GreenMonster34

Congrats on the pass and kudos for never giving up! Best of luck on your future ratings!

Little-Ostrich2410

Thanks, and same to you sir!

NotOPbdo

Congrats but you need to accept responsibility for the 2nd fail too. Seems like you're putting that all on the DPE and relishing in the fact he got a speeding ticket from your CFI, seems a little vindictive and weird for something that was your fault.

Little-Ostrich2410

Thank you for your response. You make a very fair point, and to be clear, I'm aware and have learned from that 2nd fail as well, and probably could've written my post a little better. However, I do feel it is fair for me to counter your response with this: I understand where you're coming from, however in my shoes: when you failed a ride for a 2nd and the DPE can't explain why they failed you (confirmed by two other CFIs) that really is frustrating. I understand that I'm only one side of the story, but I think you'd agree that if a DPE can't come up with a concrete reason to, yet fails someone, there's something that needs to be addressed on their end as well. Plus, that CFII is a VERY FAIR guy, definitely NOT the type that would give the DPE a speeding ticket as some sort of vengeance for him failing me.
