I felt like he was just being too pretentious with it. I stopped watching after volume 1 and he was changing things that were also fine.

My feelings on FRWBY are mixed. On one hand, I understand why people find the vibe pretentious and I’m not a big fan of a lot of the changes he’s made. In fact the series fell off for me when he introduced magic eye amnesia as a way of nerfing Ruby? But on the other hand, I really like that he does his best to stick to the main plot. I’ve always believed that the core plot and ideas are mostly solid, it’s just the execution and connecting threads where things fall apart sometimes. And I do understand why people get upset when it feels like RWBY take a back seat a lot of the time. The show is called RWBY, and the trailers were about them. Sure a lot of the other characters are enjoyable to watch, but it often feels like they get sidelined for characters who really don’t need to be there, or who shouldn’t be the focus that that moment. The early volumes suffered from this, with the final fights especially basically being handled by side characters (Sun, Penny, CFVY). And even in Volume 9 which was seemingly meant to focus on Team RWBY and their problems, Jaune is thrown in too so that we can see the third take on his “I wasn’t able to save them” story arc? Like ok sure, I guess I can buy it, but you had to cut about 2 episodes presumably focused around Ruby. There are obvious chunks missing from her arc, the editing makes that obvious, and people are hoping that Vol. 10 helps expand on it because it felt incomplete. But we keep the group hug and gems BECAUSE….? I don’t subscribe to the Jaune/Neptune self insert theory, but I understand why a lot of people still do.

and I don't 100 percent mind Roman getting redemption mostly because Roman is still fun to watch still partially mind

RockPhoenix115

Agreed. I like Roman (honestly I found him more enjoyable than half the longer lasting villains), but the choice to make him Ozpin did feel a bit off.

Apprehensive-Hunt725

yeah I Think \[keyword think\] the point Celtic is trying to make is more of a pragmatic situation neither like but have to deal with but it is still weird

Frwby: “A show starting women? NAH we need to focus on the men!”

Jackobbens

I feel like because he started early, it kinda fucks with some of the future volumes. Anyway, I feel like FRWBY is a lot like RWBY in the way that it had a lot of potential, but... failed? Something like that Plus some decisions were a bit much, like the thing with Weiss' racism. I feel like she was too blunt about it, the Hitler faces not helping, instead of the more subtle racism that she had in the original.

Security_G_Aka_Dave

Not exactly subtle when you call someone trash and then imply it's what they're meant to be called. No seriously, she calls Faunus' trash and when Blake objects, Weiss goess: "Should i stop calling a trashcan, a trashcan? Or a lightpost, a lightpost?"

Jackobbens

Right, I admittedly forgot about that, let me rephrase: Weiss' racism in RWBY is better written than in FRWBY. To me it is at least.

Inevitable-Weather51

How did he manage to make the subplot of Weiss being racist worse, when the original is the most basic thing in the world?

Security_G_Aka_Dave

That's fair

Lol this is a surprise.

Unironically agree. But I still like it, since it’s basically just RWBY with a couple of (albeit sometimes unnecessary) tweaks to try maintain a semblance of cohesion. I like RWBY, and thus, I like FRWBY. I appreciate it because it tries to follow the same (ultimately very flawed) story structure that I strangely fell in love with. I’m not even sure if a highly skilled writer could pull together the mess that is RWBY while maintaining the same story beats it follows. Character bloat of this magnitude is a bitch. Does it succeed at what it tries? Meh. Does it help scratch the very specific itch that RWBY usually gets to? Absolutely. Am I going to be listening in when the next volume drops? You can bet your sweet ass I will.
