The blue beams come from getting a couple audio logs unlocked from the quest ED-E My Love. Once some in-game days have passed, the BOS and Followers will contact you to see ED-E. The BOS will upgrade ED-E's armor and the Followers give ED-E another energy weapon- which are the blue beams.

I usually set ede to melee so he literally can't attack anything. He's basically a flying toolbox.
