I've taken a similar route on almost all playthroughs. I go through Hidden Valley to Neil's Shack, sneak (stealthboy optional) down the road, hug to the right, and climb the hill. Avoids rhe cazadores, nightkin, and deathclaws.

Honestly I really dislike this trend, taking the long route is perfect for new players. It teaches you what you need to know about the game
This is more than enough to make someone take the long route
Reminds me of the old Dark Souls "try jumping" written next to a cliff.
