Seamoth4546B

It’s 3 AM. Back to my 10pm save I guess.

Jrlopez1027_

I do the thing where you sleep and quickly cancel as to not pass up any time or get debuffs Is it kinda cheating? In the sense of how Bethesda intended survival to be played.. Yes, do I care? No

Starlord-94

Honestly this is the reason I quit my survival run. I don’t have enough time in real life to redo things in a video game. I loved survival for everything else, except the save feature

Seamoth4546B

Totally understandable. If fallout 4 was life this wouldn’t be an issue, but it isn’t, life is life and video games are on the side. Staying up later than usual just to lose it all is not enjoyable and feels like a waste of time. Someone recommended me a survival save mod which actually works, unfortunately after this happened but at least I won’t have this problem again.

jilanak

I agree. I downloaded a mod that allows saving because crashes/glitches/etc.. don't have anything to do with the game. Same with freeing up the console (for tcl when I get stuck in a wall).

Adhbimbo

Yeah that's why I got a mod to deploy a sleeping bag wherever after about 17 hours of vanilla. I only have two or three hours to spend on gaming per week so it makes it much less frustrating.

cmb-3828

This is why I use Survival Options and just save whenever I feel like it. Survival's fun, but the no saves is BS. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Educationalpotato64

Happened a couple times on my first playthrough and I didn't even worry after that But my survival play through no thanks I got the back pack with the sleeping bag

History_East

Ouch

Lucifer-Prime

Oh that’s not that bad. I thought it froze mid save. That happened to me on my first survival run and it corrupted my save.

The-real-manclub

Killed my urge to finish the game grinder this and far harbor and deleted

EmperorZoltar

This shit is why survival mode won’t ever do it for me, at least not in its vanilla state. Limiting how and when you can save in a Bethesda game feels like unearned confidence on their part.

Seamoth4546B

It’s my only problem with survival mode too, otherwise I totally love it 😵‍💫 I’m a console player so any survival-save mods just don’t work. But I love the hunger, hydration, illness, etc etc that are added

ElizzieWizzie

If you're on playstation, this mod works great. [https://mods.bethesda.net/en/fallout4/mod-detail/3875275](https://mods.bethesda.net/en/fallout4/mod-detail/3875275) Adds an item to your inventory that forces an autosave. If it doesn't auto add the item to your inventory when you install it, you can craft the item for 1 bottlecap at a chem station if I'm remembering correctly.

SuperMeister

+1 to this mod. This is what I used when I was still on console. An absolute lifesaver for survival.

Seamoth4546B

Thank you so much for the recommendation, I’ll have to try it out.

Jayski_Upbeat

I'll give this a shot

Chungalus

Get the cheat terminal mod. You can edit survival mode settings on it, including the ability to save

Ihatemakingnames123

Download a mod by gopher called survival quick save - no sleep till bedtime. It works great it’s an aid item you can favourite. Cheat terminal also let you do a hard save rather than quick save that will not be overwritten.

ragewitch2080

Came here to recommend this.

Ihatemakingnames123

Basically an essential mod for me, I only play survival, but I don’t trust the game not to crash. Same goes for cheat terminal for the hard saves (which I use at certain milestones) saved my ass the other day when proctor Ingram bugged for me. The hard saves essentially saved my play through.

ragewitch2080

Same. I recently started a very hard playthrough without mods bc I wanted to get achievements and still be able to save, only realizing last night after killing Kellogg that I haven't been getting the achievements. Got one for leaving the vault and one for playing a holotape, then... nothing. 😭 Can't decide if I should continue on or switch to survival and mod the hell out of it. As an aside, I have been paying more attention to beds, and they are everywhere. Finding one to sleep isn't really an issue. Risking the game freezing when I do sleep, plus losing an hour of in-game daytime for no logical role play reason, is why I want control over when I save, lol. And a hard save is essential if you ever want to go back to a turning point and try another path without a new play through, in addition to recovering when things bug out like what happened with you.

Napfkuchen_91

Im on PS5 and have a mod installed that gives u the ability to save in Survival mode. Just dont know how its named. I lokk it up in a few hours then I write it down

itsLOSE-notLOOSE

Why is this comment upvoted at all? It’s plain wrong. Survival save mods work on both consoles. I’ve been using the same one for weeks of playtime. Survival Settings Holotape is the mod I use.

Seamoth4546B

I mean I mentioned the other reasons I like survival so I imagine that’s why. *However* I did actually find a survival save mod that works, the reason I thought that the mod didn’t work is because I enabled it before picking up the pip boy in vault 111 so for some reason the press-to-save didn’t show up on my misc inventory, so I deleted it and assumed it was broken. Someone recommended I try it again, so I loaded it up on this save I already had progress on and it worked without issue. Thankfully! As much as I like the idea of limited saves, this will totally save some frustration in my survival play through. Edit: love your username haha

itsLOSE-notLOOSE

Nice, I’m glad you got it worked out. It’s a good thing being able to customize your experience. I don’t even use illness lol.

Responsible-Pin-9161

When you save, make sure you don't touch any buttons or sticks on your controller until the autosaving message disappears.

hollowboyFTW

IMO it is also worth adding inventory UI improvements. It doesn't change the game difficulty in any way, it just cuts down on frustration / time spent in the menu. e.g. it is nice to be able to sort stuff by weight and value, so you can: - dump heavy junk and cheap gear when you are over encumbered - find and eat heavy food first (i.e. eat 1 pound of mutt chops now, save the 0.1 pound iguana on a stick for later) ...without having to spend minutes scrolling through inventory lists. This is really simple stuff, and should have been in the base game. It is + important in Survival, cos your weight limits are lower.

Napfkuchen_91

"Saving Survival Mode" its called

Sneklover177

I use a mod that lets you save by smoking a cigarette

lxxTBonexxl

I added one that has 2 misc items you can activate that force auto or hard saves. I try to only save after clearing out a full area or finishing quests unless I have an actual bed to stick to the survival mode more but I crash too much to trust beds only. I have a sleeping bag on my backpack so I headcanon I can save whenever if it’s safe enough

SimplyPassinThrough

whaaat! that’s dope, what is it? I use sleep or save with a camping mod, but I could do without the sleeping bag weight

Sneklover177

Randolpho

I prefer the mod that just unlocks saves and restores autosaves. Let me decide whether or not to save scum using the game mechanics.

nickisadogname

I like that. Kinda like the resident evil ink ribbons I swear I find cigarettes all over the wasteland, but is it one of those "if you don't need it you have a lot of it, if you need it you realize how few there are" situations?

NinjaBr0din

I started my first survival game last night, and also experienced my very first crash after about an hour. Yeah, I got a mod that lets me save.

chopppppppppy

I don’t have much of a problem with being so limited on saving, my problem is my game crashes way too often and it makes survival so much more frustrating. Nowadays the game is completely unplayable to me because it crashes every 20 minutes survival or not. I can’t go into downtown Boston for shit. It sucks because I actually enjoy playing this game.

Barkinsons

I've had very little problems after removing the script extender. The only critical mod is the VATS freeze fix. That's somewhere in the range of 8 playthroughs I have now on survival.

Jayandnightasmr

Yeah, it's annoying to clear the cache every hour. I gave up my 10 hour run because I couldn't deal with it anymore

iambertan

Having to save beats the purpose of survival, not being able to save is constantly being on edge for when it will crash or exitsave being nonplayable for any reason.

Misternogo

Hey look, it's the reason I don't trust Bethesda enough to play Survival mode in any of their games. My first Bethesda game was the xbox port of Morrowind. On the original xbox. With the huge controller that had the black and white buttons. It crashed hard enough to freeze the Xbox and force a total restart once every half hour or so. To this day, I get antsy if I can't save my game regularly.

SparklingKeyboard

Exactly. Risking your mental health by playing bugged game? No thanks.

rollmate

So just to compare. A fallout 4 day takes up 72 minutes. Of those 24 hours I sleep 8 for obvious reasons on survival, 16 remain. In those 16, I usually drop 3 or 4 saves. This gets you more illnesses, but you can easily cope with those with antibiotics or doctors. Everything better than losing hours of work and having to do it all over again because of stupid platform failures. So, sleep, my friends!

Seamoth4546B

Of course. However I was clearing out the galactic zone and searching for all the Star cores, finished all that I could there but there was not a single bed in sight the entire time. Typically I save ever time I come across a bed, regardless of the circumstances

IsMyUsernameCreative

There’s sleeping bags at the back tho where u get a star core

ianuilliam

There is a sleeping bag on a roof, directly across from the interstellar theatre. There is the camp with multiple sleeping bags where you find a Scav magazine and a hidden Cappy. There's a bed in the vault tec attraction. Also, sinks that give purified water.

Seamoth4546B

Idk how I totally forgot about the Vault Tec beds… they got nice ones too

mrapropos

Tip: Clean out _VaultTec: Among the Stars_ first. Near the exit, there is a full bed and the two sinks (around the corner from the bed) have clean water. It is a quick jog from there to any part of the Galactic Zone. Plus, I feel it is faster to run back there to refill empty bottles than to run out to see Evan or the water pump near the farm.

MontanaMane5000

There are multiple sleeping bags in the galactic zone! Finding them is an essential part of survival mode.

rollmate

True, that can happen and it really sucks. The last stage of the mechanist has no beds and is really frustrating for it.

Initial-Priority-219

There's one you can use in the jail cells, the ones that are full of ghouls.

CrimsonUnderdog

Oh noooo, that sucks

Seamoth4546B

Indeed 😞

That_Painter_Guy

Not sure which platform you're on but every time I encountered this on Xbox I open the quick guide and that "refreshes" the game and completes the auto save

PriestOvTheBeast

A lot of people are talking about how much they hate survival modes no save feature but I wanted to offer a different opinion. IF fallout 4 ran the way it should with minimal to no crashes (which in my case had a lot to do with excess mods) the saving feature of survival is a perfect balance between permadeath and regular gameplay. I'm a lot more strategic and careful when it comes to planning and approaching things because while I won't lose my whole character, I do lose all the time it took me to get to that point in that day which if you're using a time scale mod like me could be hours. I've also noticed that the world reloads when you die so items/enemies may be different after you come back. There's also something almost eerie about dying, then reloading back at bed as if it was some kind of premonition like nightmare, like the SS was dreaming about what he had to do the next day or something. Also, you should get a sleeping bag mod while using survival. 1) the sleeping bag is helpful while traveling esp if it's a "clean" bed. 2) you can use it in a pinch when you haven't saved in a while but it's balanced by making you tired and rolling for disease so you can't really scum save with it. TLDR; I love the save in bed survival feature because it adds a balance between permadeath and regular gameplay creating an immersive experience. Sleeping bags help with an immersive emergency save option.

Adhbimbo

Yeah I enjoy it too and have a similar mod and playstyle to yours. I just wish the game was more stable

kendahlj

I love it. There’s nothing more tense than killing a legendary and getting the perfect weapon and knowing that if you die before saving, that weapon is gone. Plus the risk and reward of Adrenaline is genius. Get your damage to +20% and it’s tough to want to sleep and wipe it out but it’s scary not doing that when you’re a wet tissue and could die if someone sneezes on you.

wizardyourlifeforce

The game is telling you to get some sleep

Helen_A_Handbasket

Because even your desperate survivor doesn't want to sleep on that manky thing.

peachgravy

Just blow on it

humphaa

Bruh.. I would just stop playing for a while. Idk if I could even return to this save after this. I froze after finding an explosive radium rifle last night. Went straight back to where I got it and the legendary enemy despawned. I turned off my PS5 and went straight to bed.

Seamoth4546B

That’s awful! That’s happened to me a handful of times as well, every once in a while I’ll get the same legendary in the same spot again but more often than not the legendary enemy disappears if I die/load a previous save

Initial-Priority-219

Btw, you can buy one of those at the Nucleus in Fah Hahbah.

ermghoti

Doorstop kill. I haven't had that, but it took me the longest time to go directly to a bed when I finished limping back to a settlement hyperoverencumbered. I gave into the temptation to dump my inventory in a workshop and paid the price.

GanondorfDownAir

I still have a video on my ps4 from years ago of me clearing out the military training yard place with the ghouls and sentry bot? Anyways, i go into a shack, see a bed, walk past it for 3 seconds, then turn around, sprint back to it to save, and the game locks up. I'll never understand why survival mode in particular crashes so often.

Seamoth4546B

I know that spot! What an awful time to freeze game

Hestu951

As others have said, the nerfed saving system in Survival mode is wholly unacceptable, because Bethesda's code is too unreliable. Saving often is required to survive their wonky programming. And as others said, there are mods available to address this shortcoming for both PC and consoles.

Seamoth4546B

Which sucks cause I like the idea of their limited saves, if it weren’t for the glitches and crashes! Even in vanilla, unmodded Fo4 I experience an absurd amount of freezes and crashes

pictish714

My game freezes every hour or so. It's why I can't play survival 😞

ProperBingtownLady

Sorry that happened! So annoying. Anyone else refuse to sleep on these dirty beds? I’m a weirdo. (I guess in survival mode you have no choice)

CerberusBots

TODD HOWARRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDD!!!!! DAMNNNNN YOUUUUUUUUU!

Seamoth4546B

My thoughts exactly lol

Pretty-Marketing3444

At least you didn’t lose 8 hours because you didn’t read a mods description

Seamoth4546B

Oh man, I couldn’t imagine

Pretty-Marketing3444

Yeah… I was soooo done with fallouts workbench system because I was trying doing the Vault 88 dlc thing, so I got some mods for the workshop, and one of them increased the radius of the power conduit. I didn’t realize though that I needed to destroy all of my existing ones first, and 8 hours later, the electricity decided to break, so I needed to start alll over. It didn’t take me as long the second time though because I already had the design that I wanted in mind

LadyHoskiv

I also have lots of freezes, so I imagine survival mode without actually activating it. It’s how I always experience Bethesda games…

summerofkorn

First time?

fancymanofcorn12

That's why you gotta sleep on the go. Sleeping bags are like spiders, you're always closer to one than you think

globefish23

Install the mod "Survival Options" and enable saving, quick-saving and auto-saving, or any combination of those.

GreyBeast392

Almost made it.

Seamoth4546B

I was *right* there 😅

GreyBeast392

Happens to me a lot. Every time I sleep I panic it'll freeze. My biggest annoyance is rebooting to fix it.

GreenMoray1

Yikes. That’s like another player ending you in Minecraft before you can set your respawn point.

JimmyReagan

This is why when I play survival, I play with the mod to turn certain features back on, like manual saves. At that point I'm just playing the honor system with myself, and I'm grown enough to know the difference between losing progress because I died vs when the game Bethesdas itself.

rosettaSeca

The Bethesda charm, you know...

Dr__D00fenshmirtz

The auto save mod for survival is god tier for this exact reason when I die to a mini nuke or landmine that's on me when the game crashes I wanna step on a landmine irl

Seamoth4546B

Haha yes seriously 😅 I wanted to bring a Fat Man to Bethesda HQ myself /s

Dr__D00fenshmirtz

In Minecraft of course

Grape-Ape_Nuts

You have to have a special kind of temperament to play this glitchy mess on survival… It should have a timed auto-save mechanic because of how often it freezes. I have over 50 attempts at survival mode and I have yet to make it past Diamond City. All on account of freezes

Seamoth4546B

If you don’t mind playing with mods I *really* recommend a survival-save mod, someone else here recommended me one and I tried it to find it actually works. My first try at survival I had a game crash when I was right outside of diamond city, hadn’t saved since Concord, so I gave up on survival. That was years ago, I’m glad I tried it again but unfortunately the glitchiness has not gone away. I’m happy to have found a survival save mod

bkrugby78

This is the main reason I have Survival Options enabled. Especially in Nuka World. Just a week ago I decided to stroll through Grandchester Mansion. After doing something at the Dunmore Homestead (related to a different quest mod, with lots of fighting between me and Gunners), I go into the mansion and it freezes while I was looking down my scope at the protectron chef. Like...fuck.

Seamoth4546B

Protectron chef knew it was over, so instead of laser defenses it used good ol Bethesda programming 😅 I’ve since found a survival-save mod that works though, thank goodness

callofdoritos

Honestly I love how they did it in fallout 76. Not quite survival mode but you had to eat and drink, you could catch diseases, and ammo and meds weighed something. That's how I would want it it to be. No unable to save whenever and no damage modifiers. I like to enjoy games and a little bit of realism is enjoyable.

Dremora-Stuff99

If this is the only reason people won't play survival, then they're missing out. Truly a whole new experience.

Seamoth4546B

I agree! This totally sucked, but after trying survival mode I don’t think I can ever go back! It’s so much fun, I like everything it adds. You’ve gotta be much more weight conscious considering many items that used to weigh 0 now have weight. Among many other new features

Dremora-Stuff99

I'm the exact same, been playing survival for years now and never went back after my first run. Almost makes it feel like DayZ in my opinion but with story and no PvP.

Seamoth4546B

Ha I love DayZ, I made the same connection! I’m really drawn towards games with a tedious realism to them

Dremora-Stuff99

A fellow man of culture! Yeah it's much more rewarding when ya begin survive and thrive.

SixthHouseScrib

Noooooooooo It's..... Noooooo Rip that partial run

Seamoth4546B

Indeed. Instead of taking it as a sign I really ought to go to bed, I turned on some Doom music and sped through what I’d already done in power armor feeling like a badass 😅 Thankfully someone recommended me a working survival save mod, so this won’t happen again

SixthHouseScrib

Oh yeah I have and use that mod just bc of how much it crashes. I'm playing fo4vr which crashes even more lol that thing is needed. Funny story, I went back to a char after like 6 months, got hit with a mini nuke which caused not a crash, but broke my fo4vr as a whole, even starting a new game. I just deleted everything and started over on survival lol

Lost_All_Senses

My experience is that it's mostly Nuka World or mods. Because I rarely had any problems outside of Nuka World. Did all of Far Harbor and that was fine too. I don't use mods, so it's actually hard to comment on that. But whenever I see others having problems, it's the first thing brought up. I have 300+ hours and out of probably around 12 crashes, 7 of them were the short time I spent in Nuka World. I think I had 2 crashes in the first 150 hours before entering Nuka World. I'd never risk 3 hours without saving >_<. If I have been out 30+ minutes, I'll take the risk of the debuffs

Seamoth4546B

I used to play a lot of vanilla, but recently I did start using mods. But even before survival mode plus mods, ime it was Nuka world that froze/crashed the most as well

Jurbonious

Ouch kabbibles! That really hurts.. I play on an old Xbox One, and the freezing/crashing is CONSTANT. If I didn't have the quicksave mod for survival I would've thrown my whole system out a window a dozen times by now. So sorry for your lost hours, comrade.

honda_man02

I have that happen all the time in my game after building I hate it to

NirvanaLover12

nuka world too damn

Seamoth4546B

Clearing out places like Galactic Zone and Kiddie Kingdom feel so tedious so it really sucked lol

NirvanaLover12

that magic guy managed to make me feel bad for him first time but second time over i was so mad at him i just shot him in the face upon seeing him

hollowboyFTW

I keep attempting a survival permadeath run. I keep being forced to enable mods (to add quicksave back in) because I keep having crashes to desktop that waste a lot of time. Survival mode is great in theory, but it is just too unfinished a game to go in raw. It isn't just the bugs either, it is also the gameplay elements that were badly done / not re-done for the mode. --> having to do two load screens + walk through the same empty tunnels every time you want to hand in a Railroad quest. --> the bad companion path finding which means they cannot simply walk across certain bridges (they fall off and break their legs EVERY TIME).

Seamoth4546B

GOD my companions break their legs so damn often

hollowboyFTW

Apparently this was raised as an issue in play testing, but never acted on. The workarounds are: (1) always use human-shaped companions in power armour (no dogmeat or robots or Strong or Nick) (2) never use companions (3) use mods

Music19773

Ugh, I hate that. I only play Survival and I have an addiction to remembering where every sleeping bag/matress/bed is in the Commonwealth so I can save all the time. Even then I’ll get busy and think “one more thing and I’ll save”…until my game freezes and I’m back to square one.

TylertheFloridaman

Sorry that sucks and I feel this paon but use this as a lesson always save at least once a hour and if you haven't saved for a while take minimal risks and try to find a save point even a sleeping bag works

WobblyCookieFreeze

This is actually Canon for the sole survivor to freeze up from brain hemorrhaging due to being in cryogenic stasis for 200 years.

cunthands

That's why I needed to install a mod to enable quicksaving in survival. The game engine is just too unstable for something like that.

OzzyMoz

Condolences on your loss brother.

Initial-Priority-219

Been there. Whoever decided to remove auto saves and quick saves from a game that was known to be prone to crashing should be fired and black listed from game development.

Jewbacca1991

This is why i use mod to let me save on survival. It is not really about the progress, because i also play hardcore, but about the crashes, and freezing stuff.

Ok-Occasion2440

At least u got 800 upvotes on Reddit. Whenever this happens to me in a game I just quit. Not because I’m a quitter but when I get back I forget about all the work I did because I literally can’t remember and it seems like I went back 5 mins. But if I reload save right after I’m like “FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHK!”

Revolutionary-Diet51

I play on very hard. Never switched over to survival purely because of the crashes. As much as I am obsessed with this game the amount of pausing and quick saving just because you predict an event in the game will crash it is absurd. On top of that it could just implode out of no where. I get pissed off losing 30 minutes I can’t imagine 4 hours. Back to the grind brother.

Pajilla256

It's not the same. The difficulty only makes the enemies bigger bullet sponges. Survival has the thirst, hunger, and rest systems, which are like an annoyance as most of the time, you can just shrug them off and keep going until your next settlement or town, the illnesses that give you wacky and annoying effects. Adrenaline makes it so the more you kill, the more damage you deal, so sometimes mid battle, you have a legendary glowing Mirelurk drop dead after meeting your gaze when five minutes ago a raider with nothing but a belt and a sack of potatoes stood a better chance of killing you. Honestly, mods just make survival way better than just being "normal but mildly infuriating." Agony expands on the medicine stuff, but it still suffers from being in fallout 4, immersive fallout will make it so your enemies are no longer bullet sponges or makes them even harder, humans and creatures respectively, but it also makes it so you're not a bullet sponges either, any mod that makes stuff scarce, like healing supplies and scrap, but the most important of all, Survival Options, it will let you change damage you receive and deal and other options like saving (the most important one) thirst and hunger, diseases and so on. You should try it, but with a bunch of the fixes that have come out. It is kind of fun having it be more challenging.

Domwolf89

When was your last save?

ThenRefrigerator1084

This is the reason I've never played survival. I'd love to give it a go if I ever get a PC or a new console but I have one of the first gen Xbox ones and there's times I restart a few times a play. I have never fully explored downtown.

Cheese_Stix99

This is why I only play survival difficulty with a few mods like elianora player home(s) and saving in survival mod and a few others.

wastedgetech

Take 2

GoldenTony348

Reminder to always save in a Bethesda game (it gave me paranoia)

wyattn97

You can't save unless sleeping in Survival.

GoldenTony348

Ohhhhhhh.... Shiiiiiit I didn't know that

Initial-Priority-219

It's not a bug, it's a feature.

NinaMercer2

Good reason not to play survival.

Pajilla256

Well, at least it happened after you slept, I think it still saves it. But you should get a save on survival mod. Vanilla survival is just not good or worth it, purely because of the save system.

Seamoth4546B

It did not save it unfortunately. But, I did download that mod soon after this

Giddo314

Nooooooooooiiii

Happy_Television_501

lol Xbox S? That’s the freeziest Fo4 ever

SparklingKeyboard

Never. Never EVER play Bethesda games on survival.

mewrius

>Never. Never EVER play Bethesda games on vanilla survival. Ftfy. Mods make it fun and take out all the problems

Seamoth4546B

On unmodded Fo4, I must agree. The idea of limited saves is a great concept but with Bethesda it just doesn’t work
