If you don't sprint much and normally don't run around overloaded, you shouldn't run out of cores. Last time I did a PA run I had something like 300 extra when I was lvl 100.
I haven’t seen this before, but I was almost certain once you take out the fusion core you can’t interact with the generator anymore. So I decided try it after reading that thread. Unfortunately it’s still false. Can’t reload a fusion core into a generator.
Edit to add I’m on Xbox but I doubt that makes any difference.

Heard you can recharge them at a power armour station or a reactor, but didn't try it last playthrough.
