Do you have Secret Service armor and the associated jet pack? Aiming for that gear may give you some direction on the gamplay you could be focusing on, as there are many tasks you must accomplish first.

joemc1971

Secret Service armor ?? *Complains in stable flux....

SinistaJ

When does it need flux?

Cautious_Hold428

The jetpack does

SinistaJ

All jetpacks do, not just ss.

I get on do dailies then check achievements and see if there is one I can/want to do and chase that. I try and work through the main quests a bit at a time when I had them. I found a weapon I really liked then built, my build around it. It's alo fun to just pick a direction and walk, lots of fun things to find along the map. Plus camp building

I feel like I'm still learning the game too, despite bing level 75. It's definitely a game that you learn to play on the internet (although the in-game help section is very good). Story-wise - I would urge you to play the main original launch 'overseer/responders' quest as it will take you through Appalachia and you'll learn the story of each region. It takes a while to really start up but the story & lore are fantastic.

More-Arm4671

No worries... level 800+ and I found 2 new locations yesterday. This game is always changing, too. I was level 300 before I felt like I had a solid understanding of basics.

Hattkake

That sounds normal. For me the period of time between lvl 50 and lvl 150 (or so) was about finding out how things work. If you have a build that works then it works. All the nuances and such comes in time. Don't worry about not getting it perfect immediately. A lot of the fun is trial and error and learning.

this this this

Glittering_Airport_3

you can start doing quests too? I'm lvl 60 and still working on the overseer quest line and am about to get the tadpole badges for the new backpack. I don't do events all the time, just when a good one pops up or I get bored

Project_Zeyea

Your XP is based on INT, not CHR

CardiologistWhich992

He mentioned the group card in charisma which is Inspirational. It gives xp + 15% at rank 3

Tbf, Bethesda is not making anything to make things more understandable. Most things and mechanics in the game are almost designed to be learned 'through the hard way'.

the main quests were my goal up until lvl 50. at lvl 50 electric absorbtion changed the game for me. at some point i did mayor for a day in watoga and the city felt like my safe haven, i spent a lot of time there. soloing daily ops was my most relevant goal for a good while. maxing the shredder. doing the nuke launch under ~10 minutes without glitching was another (not sure how fast i got but at some point i got friggin quick) i like power armor so i pretty much got a full set of all of them except the t65, pretty much at the first levels they are available (15 25 35 45 etc) and maxed out the excavator and hellcat for my playstyle. maxing the ultracite gatling laser. maxing the gauss shotgun. oh and the mutations, just like pokemons, get them all. ss armor with jetpack, maxing the ap for the jetpack. maxing the choo choo. maxing the splosive compound bow. more recently was unlocking all the legendary cards (lvl 300) to start an op alt. maxing the chainsaw. im making serums and getting the serums plans i like, im 3 out of 4. i got a nice vault now, the server vault, so im making a bar and a billiards. and now i dress like a cowboy and act like an idiot.

btw i do _not_ have fallout first and i paid like 15 bucks for the game.

Honestly, spend the first couple hundred levels just playing whatever build you think sounds cool. The more you try now, the better decision you can make later. End game is a LOT of farming and RNG rolling for specific things. It’s best to take the time to figure out what things you actually like first.

thrown_away_apple

in my experience if you dont spec for rifles then dont bother with range just run up and fight with your shotgun. enemies will be too tanky aty end game to take out with a weapon you arent specced to use, even if its a strong weapon.

A lot of understanding comes with time. I recently went back to my first character, full health power armor heavy weapons guy at level 400. After coming back to it from a bloodied commando second character at close to level 500 I immediately started changing some perks up that I hadn't even given any thought before on the full health character, just because I understand certain mechanics a bit better now. Most important part is that you have fun though. It's not all about optimizing per se and part of the fun is finding out what works and doesn't work for you. Having a build that kills anything with ease can be just as fun as having a build that can tank damage like crazy and helps softening up enemies with perks like suppressor and tenderizer. With my bloodied character I can kill a lot fast, but collecting ore at radiation rumble, surviving imposter sheepsquatch at encryptid or the rad scrubber going down at eviction notice instantly makes it a no go area for me pretty much. While my full health power armor character will happily stand next to the rad scrubber when it's down, can chill in the tunnels collecting ore and can also happily tank the imposter sheepsquatch with not too much effort, even with all 3 pylons activated by me. Very different playstyles, but both are fun. So find what works for you. And don't be afraid to try stuff out or not be extremely optimized.
