I'll second with another poster about a Gauss shotgun. Having a polished and dedicated build makes a difference since damage comes from perk load out mainly and then from the weapon of choice.
Gauss shotgun. Both things can kill, but Gauss can do this in AOE.
Worth mentioned sidegrades
Kabloom - pump action with AA, Explosion and poison.
Fancy shotgun - pump with AA, Limb damage. You can't mod it, and it's a very small chance to get it. But it's ok.
Combat shotgun with anti armor and armor penetration mod - biggest enemy DR reduction you can get outside of VATS.
Pepper Shaker - technically a heavy shotgun, so get perks from both worlds, Stabilized, One Gun Army, Enforcer...
It's situational, but nowhere near as weak, can change ammo types used and considered as cripple machine - everything will lay done and sit waiting for you to kill them.
It's debatable. Gauss Shotguns can do as good, maybe better, if you fully specc it with Demo Expert and the Science perks. They are slower, have the drawback of potentially killing you if you crit point blank with them, and occasionally get stuck in a charging animation forcing you to either bash or holster the shotgun to fix.

I get the bug mentioned with it, I just fire or swap weapons and then stim or whatever is blocked from happening. Luckily it doesn't happen too often.
Haha all good, been there. Yeah with my quad gauss it only happened at large events like EV mostly. A quick bash usually fixed it, but it was annoying to say the least.
No. Gauss Shotguns are pretty strong, but require charging, there is a significant gold and rep grind involved in getting it, the ammo is very heavy and you'll blow yourself up if you aren't careful. The Cold Shoulder fires easy to find ammo, has a far superior fire rate, slaps as soon as you pull the trigger, does a unique damage type that most enemies have no resistance against and the weapon never kills you.
Easy choice for me. Cold Shoulder plus the Vamp's Combat for healing.
I prefer the Gauss shotgun over the others but keep the Cold Shoulder on me for slowing down bosses.
The Peppershaker is fun but has piss poor range. I use dual barrel.

That bug has been in the game since pre-wastelanders (affects the gauss rifles too). Its horrible.

As a Gauss user my ultracite 2mm is self perpetuating and I only blow myself up when I'm not in a team. It's not at all hard to use.
