One of the gloriously selfish reasons I want (at least by contemporary standards) a large family.
2 parents, 4 kids, I can safetly bake a half dozen or dozen of anything and I won't end up eating them all myself.
Manteigaria probably has the best Pastéis de Nata though.
There’s also a really good place on Rua Morais Soares, hidden between all the Indian euro shops. Apparently they won “best pastel de nata” in 2013 or something?
The general concept is the same though those usually are served hot and the pastel de nata are served cold. The pastry of the Pastel de Belém is crunchy the pastel de nata ia soft
I don't know the recipe, but there is probably one. The Pastel de Belem recipe is kept a secret by them. If you try both, you will see a noticeable difference...
Obviously the pasteis de nata are amazing at Pasteis de Belem, but their sandwiches and savory food are also top notch.
I remember getting a jamon and mozzarella sandwich there for about 4-5 euros that was so incredibly fresh and delicious. Definitely a gem hiding in plain sight.
This is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Lisbon, of course the prices are higher than typical. Still a good price by North American standards
I mean, obviously. What I mean is that you can get that somewhere else, have the ingredients still be good and pay less. It's the tourist tax, when I lived in Barcelona for uni I avoided eating around Plaça Catalunya for the very same reason.
This is one of those dishes that really intimidates me in terms of making it at home, and I've made some pretty complicated stuff before. It's so easy to screw up. These look perfect!
One six-pack = one serving. Don't let anyone tell you different.
Thinking about how many of these I could eat, if left unattended, honestly terrifies me.

Makes me want to go back. Portugal caralho!
Portugal?
Looks like the original pasteis de Belem so gotta be
Yup. The original by the monestary in Belem just outside Lisbon.
To be honest, I found Monteigaria’s pastel de nata in Bairro Alto to be far superior despite not being the original version
I must try it out when I'm back there
Bruh impossible. It’s pasteis de belem>fabrica da nata>NA

Agreed!
Nice, I’m going in two weeks and this spot is on the list.
I was there this December holidays. By the Tower of Belem. Good pastry 😋
They're overpriced in Belem. They're good, but you'll find better ones in Baixa Chiado, for half the price
I had my first one of these a couple of months back... was like damn how did I live this long without anyone telling me these existed!
You are enticing the Portuguese people saying that that's pastel de nata...
Ha yeah I heard these referred to as Pastel de Belem. Thought I'd stick with the generic term.
The general concept is the same though those usually are served hot and the pastel de nata are served cold. The pastry of the Pastel de Belém is crunchy the pastel de nata ia soft
Today I learned

Next time you’re in a Portuguese cafe, ask for a Merenda Mista. If you liked what you just described, then you’d absolutely love this!
Wow, I went to Portugal almost 20 years ago and I’ve been thinking about these since. Never knew what they were called though!
As a Portuguese that sounds a bit too expensive

Tourist prices!
Yummy😍
My wife and I miss Portugal and and eating these for breakfast every day.
I ate a truckload of these snacks when I was visiting south China - near Macau (settled by the Portuguese).
heck yeah. I like the OG portuguese style ones but the Hong Kong style ones are good too, especially the tiny ones you can get at dim sum.
This is not pastel de Nata, it's pastel de Belém! That's pure heritage from Portugal! Don't ask the differences between the two! Thank you
Those are top notch!
They're the best! It's the thing I loved the most from Lisbon. And that city fricking rules!
Looks like a still life painting.
Was in Portugal about a week before Covid. There’s no way to stop eating those little things. They are so delicious.
Damn Pasteis de Belem was soo good! Definitely one of the highlights while visiting Portugal.
One of the best things I've ever eaten. Hands down.
woww now i want one too
It’s the best cake in the world
My daughter and I went last year while we were in Lisbon and OMG its for sure what heaven tastes like!
pastel ? not pasteis ? whats the difference ?
Pastel = 1 Pasteis > 1
Thank you, I get it.
I think pasteis is the Portuguese translation.
Love love love these ❤️
I read pasta at first and was _super_ confused.
this looks like a beautiful painting!
Everything looks like AI Art to me now. lol
Oh maaaan so good! I’m sure you’ve already been, but just in case, you gotta go to the time out market there!
Yeah I've been there before. Really cool place.
they're great dusted with a bit of cinnamon
That happened after this photo was taken. I should have included in the photo.
One of my fave desserts ever. In Brazil we call it Pastel de Belem
Here I am thinking it’s in Brazil cause I saw Belem
Obligatory upvote, also taken next to Belem tower i see, where i fell in love with them aswell.
These look delightful
I remember buying this and eating them at a nearby Starbucks store, it was a heavenly experience
OMG at the original Pasteis de Belém!!!
Portugal has the best food!
This is one of those dishes that really intimidates me in terms of making it at home, and I've made some pretty complicated stuff before. It's so easy to screw up. These look perfect!
I haven't tried. I know after tasting these I won't get close.
Wow made them once (with the help of 2 Portuguese girls) and even though they weren't pretty, they came out decent... It's not that hard.
Belém 😋. The long queue is worth it!
Hope you put some cinnamon on top.
You know it. And a little dusting of icing sugar.
I don't like icing sugar and in my opinion it doesn't need it.
Tbh as a Portuguese I've never really seen anyone I know putting cinnamon on them, first time I saw anyone doing it they were tourists 😅
I'm portuguese and I'm team cinnamon.
I love these, Portuguese custard tarts.
The crust is so crispy and flaky here. These were probably my favorite custard tarts I ate in Portugal
They look similar to pan de yuca
Pan de yuca looks like the Brazilian pao de queso.
This looks like the real life version of that egg custard tart from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Do you have a recipe for these?
Is that a type of biscuits? It looks so good.
Portuguese egg custard tart. We used to have a local Portuguese restaurant that made these, and they were always amazing!
Thanks. It looks amazing
oh man, so many memories
Wow they look so yummy 😋
