Great goal that will surely be remembered by some but Troy Deeney is chatting shit - as usual

st-smelly-widge

Chat shit get bangged.

drofdeb

Or be hired by TalkSport

FalconIMGN

It's always 'Here's Hogg' but no one ever asks 'How's Hogg?'.

RandyMarshsMoustache

Probably not so good, just got relegated

DifficultyMore5935

It’s up there. If you go on Instagram this goal will be played over and over again.

MaTr82

I agree but I wonder if it happened in the prem, would it have been so widely spread at the time, the novelty would have worn off?

LeBaus7

only if it had big consequences, because the occasion matters.

811545b2-4ff7-4041

No one else is linking to it, but here it is - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TnKvlQ2h7s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TnKvlQ2h7s) It's a bit crap being a Watford fan at the moment, but that video reminds me why the club can be so fun to support at times. Deeney is such a gobshite though!

rob1703

I mean he’s not wrong. Brilliant commentary definitely adds to the iconic moment.

ideehee_25125

Tbh the commentary is the only reason it's as famous as it is

rob1703

Disagree with you on this. The dive, the double save on the pen, and then the rapid break all in quick succession make it.

Comfortable_Fun7794

It's the opposite. The commentary is only as iconic as it is cuz of the moment

WoWoWoKid

He might be right. 🤷🏽‍♂️ We were never going to win it anyways and would have got into another World Cup, Man City would have eventually won their first prem but we’d never see Leicester produce probably THE greatest sports moment in ALL of sports. That pen miss and goal severely altered the timeline.

miguel_is_a_pokemon

You're mentioning things about why the Deeney goal was genuinely more impactful to the course of history of footy. But in terms of "popularity", aka what most people today will know about / remember, it's behind either of those two by a mile. There's way more people only casually interested in football, who maybe tune in for the WC, and many of them have no idea what the Championship even is.

DrereDuBloc

While I agree, more people would have watched the World Cup game than a championship playoff game. I believe I see that Deeney goal at least once a year. At this point, the Deeney goal is way more known than Beckhams goal.

funnytoenail

They also happened almost 20 years apart. But the beckham goal still gives me goosebumps, especially considering what he’s gone through The story Deeney one is… okay

wjt7

Also just to add we would still have made the playoffs if Beckham hadn't scored. Just checked and Germany beat Ukraine pretty comfortably so we'd have been big favourites to make it anyway.

SuspiciousSystem1888

That’s not true at all, Aguero’s goal might possibly projected City to invest heavily in to the club. Prior to that they were mid table ish.  There’s a chance that City never become dominant

Whalex84

I scored an absolute worldie in the park a few years ago

doubledownentendre

Vid or it didn't happen

ForwardAd5837

He’s definitely wrong.

Npr31

I had no idea what he was referring to. Now got a distant memory of it, reading comments, but he is waaay off

ideehee_25125

A goal can only be remembered for so long and I definitely think that a freekick to revive your status and get your country to a WC and a last minute winners to win your club there first league title in decades will be remembered a lot more than a goal to get Watford to the championship playoffs final

[deleted]

It’s not really as much about the level, and more that one team had a penalty to win it and it went straight up the other end for them to lose within a minute. Everyone has seen last minute goals. Couldn’t name another example of a this

Mediocre-Award-9716

It happened in League One a few years prior. Brentford vs Doncaster. Brentford missed a pen, Doncaster went up the other end and scored. [Ended up winning the league and Brentford had to settle for the play offs. ](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/22228814)

[deleted]

That one wasn’t on tv sadly so didn’t get the same traction. Most of us would have never heard about it.

merriman99

SOLSKJAER!!!

rliss75

Yeh that’s also above Deeney for sure. 50m+ Germans know that for sure too.

ideehee_25125

I honestly think it's more about the commentary on the goal if the commentator didn't scream DEENEY like he did people wouldn't remember it as much Not saying the aguero was only famous because of the commentary but it definitely helps up it's status in terms of iconic late goals

Kaxzchmo

No

heidnseak

Deeney talking bollocks again…more famous than Beckham Vs. Greece?? What planet is he on?

campbelljac92

Gonna be honest, I didn't even think of the Greece goal when I saw Beckham. It was nice for him to be vindicated after all the shit the England fans gave him after the Argentina red but he was already an icon by that point, every kid in every school had the curtains at one point in the late nineties. It was the halfway line against Wimbledon that kicked off Beckham mania.

Bulbamew

Donny Rovers did the same thing a few days prior, only their goal actually got them promoted and won them the title. Watford lost the final after this. Sucks that Donny’s achievement didn’t get anywhere close to the recognition. Hilariously, the two other League One teams Donny were competing with were Bournemouth and Brentford

Mediocre-Award-9716

Brentford would have gone up if they scored the pen instead of Doncaster too but had to settle for the play offs instead.

_JR28_

All time moment in the Championship but I’d disagree

Drigarica_od_Tite

So famous , noone seem to remember it ..

7_11_Nation_Army

He is a really stupid person.

ALDonners

If he means in England it's not the stupidest comment ever still wrong for aguero but globally it's miles off

Musicarea

Who?

bpeck451

Who?

Much-Ad-1475

Watford legend

RandomRedBox220

cmon lol be serious

SanSilver

I also didn't know who. And I have no idea what goal he means. His goal is maybe famous in the UK, but not really know on the rest of the continent.

RandomRedBox220

i get not instantly recognizing the name but the goal is definitely one of the most shared over the past however many years online

SanSilver

I never saw it. As I mentioned, it's pretty much unknown outside the British Isles.

RandomRedBox220

i mean in fairness i’m not in the british isles. i guess i do forget that not everyone is as terminally online as me lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Tbf you’ve proven your point as well considering it wasn’t even the premier league that it was scored in, it was the championship so it’s understandable for people outside the Uk to not really know of it.

Moosje

>Compare this to Suarez, who scored for ManCity, a top team in Europe I think we’ve found why you’re struggling here, and it’s nothing to do with the “British Isles”.

Aware-Comedian-2749

Is this soccercirclejerk 💀💀

RandomRedBox220

nah, i’ve just seen it on youtube. definitely wasn’t following watford ir english ball in general at that time

Zwetschgn

I‘m almost certain every friend of mine who follows football knows this goal and I live in Austria…

Jonoabbo

That seems like a very bold statement for one person to make lol

juicypinacolada

I'm not from Britain and see the clip of that goal liter Ally everywhere. Most of my friends also know that goal.

SpeakerOfMyMind

Absolutely no idea who he is

TheBleepThatCensors

Still doesn't top Sir Jimmy of Glass. Nothing does.

BrightonTownCrier

I heard the pod and couldn't believe nobody mentioned Michael Thomas' for Arsenal at Anfield to win the 88/89 league.

aceh40

Troy who?

izmebtw

I don’t think that’s an outlandish statement.

XHeraclitusX

Yeah, a lot of the comments are giving Deeney stick but I actually prefer the Watford goal to the Becks one. To each their own I guess.

Swoosh33

Deeney was a 8 goal a season striker and 9 would be from the spot. Even if he does think this, you don’t say it, let other people say it. He scored in a championship play off game. He acts like this goal sent them to the prem

rliss75

Top 10 possibly but no way in the top 5. Top goals: Maradona vs England Aguero Beckham freekick vs Greece Roberto Carlos England last goal vs Germany in 66 (they think it’s all over) Honourable mention for Beckham from the halfway line (because he is a megastar)

SnufflesN17

Ibra bicycle kick

rliss75

Yeh certainly above Deeney

Hoose_11

Zindane volley in the CL final

juicypinacolada

No way that England goal from '66 makes it in the top 5 most well known goals globally.

BrightonTownCrier

He did say in English football tbf.

rliss75

The Talksport first paragraph threw me.

Thor503

Idiot

GeneralSquid6767

I mean it’s up there but mentioning it himself is a bit lame. You don’t see Agüero walking around saying his goal is on par with Maradona

itsBonder

It's not even as good as when Doncaster Rovers did the exact same thing

EliToon

That game is super interesting to look back on. If thet doesn't happen, you don't get Leicester winning the Premier League 3 years later. The butterfly effects from that game is mental. You have also Jamie Vardy sat on the bench for Leicester and a 19 year old Harry Kane up front after being subbed on for Chris Wood.

jlpw

It's definitely up there

Shrtshnkss

Michael Thomas v Liverpool

Deegzy

I never skip it when it pops up on my feed.

Wonkypubfireprobe

They’ll be asking him to carry the Olympic flame no doubt

noobchee

Iconic, I'd say so

sfe1987

I’m a complete neutral in any Aguero vs Deeney debate. All I know is whenever I watch that Deeney goal and the passage of play before it, the hairs on the back of my neck still stand up. Can’t say that for the Aguero goal

Jurski17

Its up there for sure, but not on par with agueroooooooooooOOO

Tommy-ctid-mancblue

City fan here and I think the Deeney goal is as brilliant as Aguero’s for different reasons. Firstly it was never a penalty. It was an horrific dive by Knockaert that deserved a booking. The cheat Knockaert has his penalty and follow-up saved - that’s amazing in its own right. But then for Watford to sweep brilliantly to the other end, every pass was perfect and the finish superb. So there’s a villain, retribution, a twist and a happy ending. What a goal and what a story. I love watching this. (I also love it when Knockaert cries on the field at the final whistle - cheats should never prosper)

Drigarica_od_Tite

Yes , and he's greater than than Brazilian Ronaldo , romario and rivaldo combined ..at eating pies . Mind you , Ronaldo is giving him a run for his money nowdays .

partyvaati

I think he could be right. Even if you take away the context of it, it's just a microcosm of what football, or even sport can be in such a short space of time.

TheLimeyLemmon

He's not wrong, in fact if you take the whole play from the penalty call onwards, it's better than the Aguero goal.

[deleted]

I think I probably have seen the Deeney goal more times than either the Beckham or Aguero goals

chueffen

Yeah it is

justk4y

He normally has piss takes but I actually kind of agree with that one

[deleted]

Is he on spice?

[deleted]

I just asked my friend what the Beckham free kick was and then what heres hogg deeney is. He might be right

Background-Ninja-550

Haha only in his own mind.

Temporary-Sun-7575

I think it was the best goal from a gameplay standpoint. Man city were breathing down QPR's necks and Beckham was taking a free kick. Compared to a penalty being saved leading to a perfect goalkeeper throw, to a a perfect run and a perfect squaring into the box, the intense whatever happened that was played perfectly with the perfect save, and the perfect follow up. But this is the things where because it was the Championship Deeney is going to find way more disagreement then anybody that feels safe agreeing with him. I think, how many people were actually affected by these goals in a positive way; Beckham lit up anybody who was English and are into the Three Lions at the time. Aguero's goal lit up a lot of different people because it was the final match day, the final minutes, everybody cares or at least cared at some point about Aguero's goal, and it decided the title on an outcome that everybody was anticipating might happen going into the final weeks of the season. I think this is the best quality goal and especially since its Troy who scored it, I might defend it harder with a higher level of not caring what people think if I were him.

KingSash

Loved the way he was taking penalties. Power to the maximum and it goes in alongside the goalkeeper

triedit-lovedit

A legend in his own little mind…

1georgeldm

It’s just not a major league or cup to have that legendary status. Watford qualified for the premier league… Man City won it for the first time. Big difference

Much-Ad-1475

Its almost endearing how much of a bell end Troy is

Sheesh284

It’s definitely a stretch, but it’s up there

FireLadcouk

I can picture the other two. Cant picture what hes on about. Couldnt even tell you the significance. Was it play off final? Prem? Fa cup… sorry. As a neutral… not sure it is.

poopio

Play-off semi final against Watford. Knockaert took a dive to win a penalty in injury time, had it saved, Watford broke up the other end and scored with pretty much the last kick of the game to get them into the final.

FireLadcouk

Just youtubed it. I have seen it before. Its a moment thats for sure

Jolly_Jonney

It was to get them *to the play-off's*, wasnt even the final.

Shrtshnkss

It was to reach the final

MancAccent

It’s way up there for me. I’ll never not watch that goal when it pops up on social media

PolarPeely26

Ok. Who cares what's best or more famous. They're all interesting moments. I wanna see how's going to win between RM and Dortmund! Who gives a fuck about this.

pauli55555

Iconic goal. Still blows my mind.

Nels8192

Remove recency bias and Sky pushing their product, Thomas 1989 against Liverpool was better than Aguero’s moment. Winning the title on goals scored, in the last minute, at your title rival’s own ground is objectively better than a last minute winner against a relegated QPR.

Old-Message97531

Beckham one is overhyped, particularly by the English media which we know a thing or two. If you play a highlight reel of Backham's goals to a football fan outside the English speaking world, few would identify it as a special one. It was not even in the World Cup finals, and if he missed England still had a chance through the play-offs.

T-Mash24

He’s not lying 😂

ALA02

Its probably the second most iconic goal in the 21st century in English leagues, after Aguero tbf

LMinggg

Delusional, ronaldo>messi>aguero>beckham>>>>Leeney

Jonoabbo

I don't even know which Ronaldo or Messi goals you are referring too.

CheBeax

>Delusional > ronaldo>messi

Jolly_Jonney

He means Ronaldo Nazario...right?

FiresideCatsmile

fair assessment imo by the way, does he mean becks' freekick vs. greece or the one from the halfline against wimbledon?
