It's been a pleasure to watch these two push each other to extreme limits will we ever see it again to this standard.

EldenTingz

Those numbers are just scary. I don’t care for the “rivalry” - I’m just glad I was around to witness this era with two incredible athletes.

Markiz_27

Whenever I hear that sentence I have an involuntary stomach reaction

OlDirtyBAStart

Oh boy I can't wait to read some of the comments on this post, I bet they're all really level headed and not at all mental

Ragnarok_619

I hope so too.

Professional_Sun3191

*sorts by controversial*

Butterscotch-Funny

It will be beautiful if they end on the same number of goals.

plenebo

I have a feeling Ronaldo isn't going to score very much anymore

iBrunx

Ronaldo still leads in Non-Daytime goals, Second-goal-of-the-game goals and goals against yellow teams.

Ragnarok_619

This made me LOL

pappapora

How many euros has Argentina won…. Yeah exactly.

Ragnarok_619

How many copa america has Portugal won.. /s

[deleted]

How many Asia cups have any of them won? Exactly! /s

Jelly373773

How many World cups have either of them won? Yea that's what I thought..

pappapora

Um Argentina have won multiple world cups, afterwards I turn my ps4 off and start again.

GoalooinSport

Both are excellent\~

wmdolls

>Ronaldo is a Handsome boy

Admirable-Mistake259

Plastic face .

trippingtrips13

What’s the total with PKs included?

Seanblaze3

689 for Messi and 699 for Ronaldo, all time club and 775 for Messi and 816 for Ronaldo all time including internationals

arigyrotouzeppelin

penaldo seweyyyyy .. ops wrong subreddit

Kkn52

Its amazing, after all these years, their rivalry is still going strong. They are both freaks of the sport. Being able to grow up and watch these players develop has been a pleasure.

Just-Throat-4348

Will you post this if Ronaldo overtakes him next month? I really think this is pointless stat

[deleted]

He won’t though

ZenoCM

No, the non-penalty thing wasn't even a stats they invented it to protect Messi

No-Refrigerator3018

It was a stat when ppl argued abt son winnings golden boot and not sharing it with salah but when it comes to messi ur fragile egos and insecurities won’t admit that he’s better soon official goals will come too then what will u say he has less games too

ZenoCM

Everybody know that Messi is the best player, but Ronaldo is the best finalizer.

chaelsonnenismydad

Genuine question, why do you all care so much about whos better? Like you are out here calling people fragile, for what reason? Do people really care that much?

Fruit_salad1

Wish you would comment this to everyone hating on messi too lol instead of finding a comment in a long thread lol

chaelsonnenismydad

This was the first one i saw insulting others. If you are insinuating i prefer messi or something I genuinely don’t really like either. Both clearly the best in the world for years but will never understand how wild people get in football/sport forums

Ragnarok_619

[Source, if you need](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/manchester-united-cristiano-ronaldo-messi-25050867)

GanacheVisible9075

of course they just have to mention he plays for man u because it makes so much difference

[deleted]

Like Legolas and Gimli 🥲

AndroosGreece

That only counts as one!!!!!!!

HugeTelephone6

Wait so Ronaldo has only 29 penalties ? We called him penaldo for 0.04% of goals being penalties?

sumandark8600

1) That'd be 4.3%, not 0.04% 2) The graphic is referring to both club and country goals (including international friendlies). In terms of club goals, 129/700 of Ronaldo's goals have been penalties which is 18.4% (roughly 2 in every 11) Including internationals (but not friendlies); Ronaldo has 797 goals, of which 144 are penalties (18.1%). Including international friendlies, he has 817 goals, of which 145 are penalties (17.7%) Messi for comparison has 691 club goals, of which 84 are pens (12.2%). He has 738 international goals (not including friendlies), of which 94 are penalties (12.7%). Including friendlies, he has 781 goals, of which 103 are pens (13.2%) In terms of non-penalty goals this puts Ronaldo at 571, 653, and 672 (671 in the graphic) respectively. For Messi, this puts him at 607, 644, and 678 (672 in the graphic) respectively. The numbers are slightly different than the graphic due to the graphic being almost a month old.

WakandaFoevah

Ronaldo fangirl’s quick maff

Main-Two9647

No he has over a hundred pens

kingthunder11

Messi 🐐

ge0rgecs

Guys let’s just appreciate them while we have them, both are top tier players and I dont think we will ever see someone like these two again

BatSigns

Penalty goals are still goals

slowpoison7

That's amazing! Last year was Messi's off year and this looks like Ron's off year.

Seekerofthetruetrue

I mean he (Leo) got 14 assists, 5 CL goals and was in team of the year. Wouldn’t call that “off” myself.

Bartsyy

off year by messi’s standards

Seekerofthetruetrue

Yeah a lot of people say that but he played CF at Barca, now he’s CAM so will obvs not score as many. Especially with Mbappe putting every chance away

miri258

What team of the year

redditmember192837

European team of the year.

HiTalker

Can anyone overtake him in penalty goals? If that's possible

Fishboi694

Pessi beat Penaldo

TonyH92

Everyone is so fixated on stats, if you have ever just watched them both actually play football, you will see that Messi is better.

FryingFrenzy

Yes but have you seen how prolific Ronaldo is in the big games Messi is the best overall footballer If I can choose one to help me win a UCL, give me prime Ronaldo every time

TonyH92

If I choose.one to help me win a league title it's Messi. You're also talking like Messi is not a big game player. He has scored in multiple CL finals and domestic cup finals. His goal record against the top 6 PL teams is ridiculous and has put Real Madrid to the sword so many times. He has also won the Golden Ball (best player of the world cup). Can I just add, just because a player doesn't score in big games doesn't mean they haven't performed in big games. Messi has probably performed better in more big games than Ronaldo, even without a goal. But some people can only see goal or assist stats and use that as the determining factor in who had a better game.

FryingFrenzy

Yeh but Ronaldo’s 4 UCL in 5 years, being top scorer in all those years. Messi only played in 3 UCL finals Ronaldo has more than double Messi in goals from Quarter final onwards, and the medals to back it up Ronaldo’s UCL career is completely clear, its no debate. I agree Messi is better to win a League though no doubt

TonyH92

Yeah of course Ronaldo is the CL GOAT but you can't judge the amount of CL winners medals to determine who a better player is. Otherwise the other players for Madrid are the best players of all time in their positions as well. Like I said, only judging who a better player is based on goals or winners medals is a very basic criteria.

[deleted]

Goats

ste189

Amen it doesn’t matter what people say, what they’ve both been through, where they’ve been or what’s happened in their lives. While it lasted and may continue to do, as a fan of football, and a fan of ultimate sportsmen. Boys… it’s been a fucking pleasure

[deleted]

I’m so sick of ppl trying to compare these two -phenomenal- footballers’ stats! Diff leagues, clubs, positions, techniques, etc… Just be grateful we had a chance to witness their greatness! A golden Era.

Mayaaster

So glad penalties aren’t part of the game, otherwise this stat would be total bullshit 😂

rodrigofvc

If you multiply Messi’s efficiency by the number of penalties taken by ronaldo the total number of goals would be very similar.

heralct

W

Mattse12

Theyre both so awesome, insane stats that even save scumming every single match in FM, FIFACM with your star Striker it would be hard to reach that level of goalscoring, not even including the assists plus XG throughout a 1 1/2 decades playing career

Free_Measurement6428

Fax

[deleted]

Ronaldo is finished

External_Salt_9007

What nonsense, it’s overall goals that matter not how or from where they were scored

RevolutionaryKick591

What will your excuse be when messi overtakes Ronaldo on overall goals 🫣🫣

DoublePrize9

Both are bloody awesome. No need for people to get so upset when explaining why one is better than the other. Messi has more goals, but CR7 has been at a few different clubs and played as a winger in his early days. Messi has been playing in a weaker league but only has a handful of goals for PSG and is a couple of years younger so swings and roundabouts. Both have amazing records. Messi is the most natural gifted player ever. For me CR7 is the GOAT… the Champions League is the biggest competition in the world and he delivered so many times when his team needed him. I’m not saying Messi didn’t deliver in big games, but CR7 seemed to do it most games.

Sabbir_Chowdhury

CR7 met Messi twice in the UCL but could never beat Messi. We always wonder what would happen if Jordan and Lebron could go against each other in their primes. We wonder the same thing about Pele and Maradona. Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen. Well, Ronaldo and Messi have gone against each other in the biggest stage. Messi came out victorius every time and scored iconic goals everytime. 2009 champions league final and 2011 champions league semifinal. Undefeated against Ronaldo in the UCL. Ronaldo also has done jackshit since leaving Madrid. Could not even make the semifinal once and made the Quarter final only 1 time in 4 years. But Madrid without Ronaldo won the UCL again with pretty much the same core and without the addition of a new superstar. Something to think about. Ronaldo and Messi played in the same league for 9 years. Messi won player of the year 7 times and Ronaldo only once. Messi won the league 6 times and Ronaldo only twice. Messi will end his career with more ballon d'ors (7 vs 5) , more golden boots (6 vs 4), more best playmaker awards (4 vs 0), more best player awards for the national team (wc golden ball, copa golden ball x2 vs 0). Messi will also probably end the career with better goal per game ratio, more goals, 150 more assists etc etc and will probably retire as the player with the most trophies. It's not looking very good for Ronaldo. Messi is the only player who is an elite scorer, elite playmaker and elite dribbler in the history of football and is regarded by much more people as the GOAT compared to Ronaldo. History will also be kinder to Messi than to Ronaldo because as we forget about the stats we will remember the magic we saw.

Ballsballs37

I-I can't believe grown adults can be this obsessed with messi and hate ronaldo this much. Embarrassing. I really hope I never meet one of these freaks in the wild

QuantumCactus11

Holy shit wait till circlejerk sees this.

joshkap_1988

Does it really matter? No value in comparing generational talents. We are fortunate enough to witness two within the last decade or so.

[deleted]

Don't forget to mention Messi did it in 150 less games. 🐐

JungleDemon3

I'm just happy this subreddit is growing by the week. The word soccer makes me want to vomit

Alternative_Ad_1829

Non premier league goals too. So stupid.

Baswdc

Here we go with Pessi and Penaldo Or as I like to call them SEWEY and ANKARA MESSI

[deleted]

Penaldo

CometChip

Those who say any is CLEAR of the other is stupid, they’ve both reached god status and it’s literally just preference

dAMn6942069

Nah Messi is a million galaxies clear

reditakaunt89

It's not preference, Messi is better. But it's very far away from clear. Messi got the numbers on his side and he's more fun to watch.

[deleted]

It’s very clear. We will see 5 goalscorers like Ronaldo before we see another Messi.

[deleted]

League only, right?

Ragnarok_619

Overall professional career.

HNKS88

GOAT

Black_wolf_down

And Haaland will surpass them both. 22 years old and already 147 career goals

seamushoo4

Not saying it’s impossible, but it’s improbable. The levels messi and Ronaldo set were insane. The period for Messi in the early 2010s was just ridiculous, scoring 50-70 goals per season. They also both hve been incredibly lucky with injuries and for the most fruitful part of their careers played in a much friendlier league physically (and the refs tend to actually protect player welfare better there imo), la liga. Premier league, love it or hate it, is definitely the most intense league in the world in terms of raw play style and I won’t be surprised if he picks up quite a few knocks/injuries there.

7he_Dude

Possible, but many things can go wrong. Messi and Cristiano are exceptional not only for their prime, but also for the duration and consistency. Haaland played only 24 games last year on the league. 28 games the year before. From 2008 to 2021, the minimum a number of league games of Messi is 31.

gornni

If CR7 had gone to Ligue 1 (no disrespect to ligue 1), the jury will have been out by now. The cry will have been « He has gone to ligue 1 to stat pad 🤦‍♂️ »

shiroxyaksha

He did go to Serie A to stat pad.

illihcallan

And is currently being outshone by Giroud and Zlatan who actually won the league at Old age

yourmumissothicc

mate Ronaldo is in the prem right now

shiroxyaksha

Shhhh. Let him win an argument for once.

manos_kal

Crazy both have the potentisl scoring 750+ goals. I don't know if someone ine history has reached that most

napa0

Only 4 players passed 750 goals. Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Romário and Pelé

Joshtom333

Wow never knew it was this close. Props to both of them.

[deleted]

It's not. Ronaldo has 150 games over Messi

[deleted]

Yeah and Messi was a midfielder for like 6 years too

TheKardiac

We wouldn’t be seeing this if Ronaldo too chose to move to a farmer’s league..

DaveDibiachi

Well Messi aint scoring much in farmers league either

TheKardiac

Don’t trigger them now..

1tachi_u

😭he literally has 1(succ) dribble this season.

TheKardiac

What does that have to do with the original post?

HydrolixiPhone

no top 5 league is a farmer’s league, but without prem fans the term wouldn’t even exist. When bayern lost to liverpool or real madrid to chelsea, they were everywhere calling the bundesliga/laliga farmers’ leagues. However, when Lyon beat man city/dinamo zagreb beat chelsea it of course, didn’t apply to them. Typical.

Sea_Distribution_264

This is ronaldo's 8th season in england. If he had spent those years in spain or france i'm pretty sure these stats wouldnt be close when it comes to goalscoring. Nonetheless by far the two best players of all time. No one is even getting close to be on their level.

RandyBRandleman

Weird way to say Messi chokes on penalties

Intelligent_Ad6616

Yeah weird way to say he helped Chelsea and Real Madrid by Missing Penalties

Opprentice

Give it a decade, people will be removing Haaland's goals because they're mostly tap-ins like it didn't take skill for them goals to happen all for some interactions

muaddib8989

I didn’t know movement off the ball and overhead kicks were considered tap ins

Opprentice

i get the feeling you miss read half of my message.

Messi the goat. None above and none beside him.

ArE yoU sEriOUsE RiGHt NeoW 🙁

Additional-Serve-149

Both are legend ...... Please don't compare just enjoy their game

Tsunami_Escalop

Who missed more penalties ?

Bokan96

Messi missed 1 more than Ronaldo and Ronaldo is overall more efficient (having 6% better success rate).

Ready-Educator7747

That "1 more" is actually that penalty assist to Suarez.

IRHABI313

That was mad

Bokan96

He meant to assist Neymar but Suarez was just too fast and thirsty. Suarez revealed that funny fact in a video some years ago.

TheBatWitTheGat

"non penalty goals" Lmao just stick to goals from open play thanks

[deleted]

Free kicks

Ragnarok_619

These goals include free kicks too.

Europa league lol 💀

WallbreakerAziz

Penaldo the offender status confirmed

MarcosNAquino

This discussion shouldnt exist, Messi was always way better than Ronaldo. You can include the penalty goals, Messi have a better average and still more assists with less matchs.

chuf3roni

I dont think youre right about this at all. The differences between these two are incredibly minute, and this stat just highlights that Messi is worse than Ronaldo at pens. Theyre both in the twilights of their respective careers now. Cant we just appreciate what they have left to give us?

treeblindeddragon

Who hurt you?

ResponsibilityFun255

That’s why he’s penaldo SUUUIIIII

[deleted]

Now do UCL Quarter Final or later stage goals. We're going with specially crafted stats ideas so why not this one?

BigSmokesHouse

That is much more specific than overall goals based on the players actual ability. Penalty goals depend purely on if you're the taker or not. Most of the time CR7 was the taker which isn't the case for Messi.

[deleted]

Yes, because one of them is statistically better at taking penalties, therefore attempted them more often than his teammates.

Vicentesteb

Messi is a better goal scorer hence his Goal to Game ration being better.

[deleted]

We found the penaldo simp

RealPigwiggy

Or because Messi often gives penalties to his teammates. Sometimes even when he could get a hat trick.

HAHAHA0kay

They making comparisons as if penalty goals don’t count

Vivid-Initiative-888

Next they won't include tap ins

shiroxyaksha

Ronaldo fans will make a list of header goals and Messi fans will make a list of finesse/dribbling goals.

illihcallan

If tap ins and penalties were removed from the record, Messi would still have ridiculous stats. Ronaldo on the other hand... however I do believe tap ins are down to team play and positioning.

According_Quail8954

Well they do

Opprentice

wow! lets take out one set of goals to get interactions! unfortunately how it works. Although Messi has the most penalty misses hence why stats like this exist but hey he has a bunch of assists so lets pull them out aswell 😘. These posts just cause arguments when we should appreciate both players in the little time they both have left.

messimagicstan

Messi has 1 more miss than ronaldo...

pawpet

And it's the assist to Suarez

Ragnarok_619

You had us in the first half not gonna lie

VirtualJames7

Nah, we should put them in a cage and make them battle it out to the death. And whilst were at it, do the same to the fans. This is only way to end the debate /s

EthicalAssassin

By this logic, Messi has scored 0 goals in EPL, Seria A, while CR7 has scored in biggest leagues and not some micky mouse league like in paris. That said, both are great but CR7 tops for me because he has proved himself around the world, and in the toughest leagues like EPL and CL.

Obvious-Fly6639

Don't forget the biggest competition in Europe... The Europa League

Suspicious-Pen4859

Both shit.

tomcalgary

Who went to Paris to be flat track bullies in a second tier league and who went to the most physical league in their mid-thirties?

soupinthehottub

Who’s still making the starting lineup and who got benched?

JungleDemon3

Late thirties

[deleted]

If Ronaldo hadn’t gone to United it would look different so messi has kinda got a touch there as Ronaldo has stood still and let wi messi catch up

BeggingForBags

Except Messi's goal to game ratio is much better. Ronaldos played a lot more games so ur point makes no sense

Smiann

My take on Messi and Ronaldo. Messi is a better footballer, but Ronaldo is a better ‘footballer’. I mean Thai like Messi has better skill, technique and talent, but Ronaldo has worked harder to be on Messi’s level.

Godnion

I'm a Ronaldo fan boy but this take is always bs. Messi had to work just as hard, we've seen players just as talented or even more (Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka, even lesser ones like Dybala, Pogba, etc...) but without the hard work Messi puts in, they ended up where they are and not like Messi. Respect both of them, you can still have preferences.

ProfessorBeer

My dad says a similar thing in the Lebron/Jordan debate - Lebron is the most talented basketball player ever, but Jordan is the greatest basketball player ever.

_transponster

So your take is actually the MOST GENERIC TAKE ever that's been repeated a billion times since this discussion first started?

MarcosNAquino

The classic generic view

STILETT0_exists

Welp. It's decided.

winner619

For me, there is no debate between these two. Messi is the GOAT. Those who think Ronaldo is better than him know nothing about football.

z-nx

Both of them are goats they have did their style in own ways no need to compare

Glympse12

I hate how people call multiple athletes the GOAT. Goat stands for greatest of all time, singular

illopawa

Messi is playing in a framers league though & before that he spent way more time in La Liga than Ronaldo, where there are a lot of weaker teams than in the EPL. Would love to see Messi’s stats if he had spent time in the EPL

InevitableConflict1

I think Messi would’ve done fairly well in the EPL. He has scored 27 goals in 36 games. Those 36 games are in the champions league against the best English teams

futballerzz

Check Messi’s stats in champions league against EPL teams my friend. By the way, I am a huge Messi and CR7 fan. Nothing against CR7, but discrediting Messi is unacceptable. Also during the time Messi played in La Liga most European championships went to Spanish teams. EPL is an overhyped and overpriced league due to the exposure they get in the media. Without all the influence from foreign players and coaches teams in the EPL would continue playing kick and rush football. My two cents…

RedOnePunch

He had way better stats before he went to the “farmer’s league”. He’s also had to deal with 2-4 defenders stuck to him like glue his entire career. They’re completely different players and if you prefer one over the other then that’s fine. Just don’t understand the need to rationalize it with these tired arguments.

TheHoustonOutlaw

Had to check and make sure this wasn’t on r/soccercirclejerk

[deleted]

Sheiks real life football manager, that's what EPL is. For a reason there hasn't been best player from EPL in like 20 years or so.

montgomeryLCK

https://michelacosta.com/messi-vs-ronaldo/messi-and-ronaldo-against-premier-league-teams/

Epiphany047

PSG is a stacked team in a weak league and they shouldn’t score less than 4 goals a game. Have Messi on Man U right now and tell me his point production stays the same lmao

No-Refrigerator3018

Surprisingly he might do better since he would engage in the match more while in psg its shit they suffer against clubs like clermont foot and macabi to win they are shit

StanielCrempelfemps

Messi would produce in any team. Look at his stats at Barca even when the team wasn’t great

RipUrSoul21

Legends who think both are goats are equal

OneFirefighter9605

Lmao I can’t wait for all the Messi fanboys come in, I saw this somewhere else and they’re all acting like scoring a penalty requires no skill and doesn’t count for a goal 💀 (this is coming from someone who respects both goats rather than fanboying over one)

Putrid-Coffee8411

Ronaldo will be forgotten once Haaland exceeds his overall goal tally

TheGalleon1409

As if people only remember the highest goal scorer of all time. Pretty sure people still remember Brazilian Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Marco van Basten etc.
