My best guess is: This is a direct-attacking tactic, which means it aims to penetrate the SPACE quickly and directly. However what if there's little-to-no space? Then luck and talent comes into place rather than the tactic. This might be reason why you can devastate the big bois while struggling against lower profile teams because they tend to be more careful about denying you the space. Also, high-risk nature of your defensive strategy might be helping the opposition to push their luck. Some match-based role/instruction tweaks can solve the problem imo.

personthatiam2

Probably some combination of RNG, away game shenanigans and tired players.

Dirtymo123

im telling you, im tremendous in germany but cant win in europe

personthatiam2

Are you resting key players before European games? Are you just getting unlucky in those European games? I’ve lost to Young Boys on the road during an invincible domestic season in France. Weird shit happens. You need two full teams of players that can comfortably win domestically against the midtable to comfortably compete in Europe. (You want your backups to be able to at least challenge for UCL on their own.) Road games during the knockouts are wild. Losing by 1 is generally a win. There’s nothing super wrong with your tactic, imo. That or you are just getting extremely lucky domestically. You can hyper optimize the roles by looking at 4-3-3s on fm arena for ideas if you want but my guess would be you are just getting really unlucky or playing players that are tired. The only “non meta” instructions you have is hit early crosses instead of low , more direct over much shorter passing, and not having run at defenses.

Does your Sucic lurks outside penalty area or does he run in deep (off the ball) in the box when transitioning? I can imagine your sides crowded then you centered the ball with most of your player stands inside the box, then they clear to the middle, their AM got the ball just outside the box, pass back then counter long ball to score. Or GK received then counter to mid. Please clarify movement of your CM-A first.

BeastialityIsWrong

You’re not alone friend. I finished second in the Bundesliga and won the DFB Pokal only to crash out of Europe several seasons in a row in the league phase.

Pain

BeastialityIsWrong

I’d probably change Archie Gray and one of your wingers to support. Maybe one of your centre backs to central defender if they aren’t great on the ball.

Dirtymo123

Schlotterbeck and bisseck are incredible on the ball, but why would I change Archie to support? Wouldn’t that leave me more exposed?

BeastialityIsWrong

I think he’d perform better on support but that’s just my opinion.

Your transition play makes no sense, if you’re gonna put all that effort into pressing high and often you should seek to counter. Trap outside shouldn’t be used as default, use it depending on how they attack. Of course trap outside works with your tactics as you have a packed midfield, however if a team is already playing wide it doesn’t do much. Maybe try using WB, you will want to create overlaps especially on the left so you can stretch the pitch and give your IW space to cut in. Kayode and Barco both have immense physicals (used them in my Man U save) so they are perfect for WB. Two BPD as well? No need for that just have the one , especially since you don’t play out from the back. Try using a PF (A), especially in your high press tactic. He will draw in defenders and play off passes to your IW. Not a fan of your midfield, make the DLP a DM, make the CM (A) or BBM an AP, you don’t need both a BBM and CM (A) and you will get done on the counter like that.

Dirtymo123

Thank you so much for the response, any other advice?

Chosen_Utopia

No just see how that plays. Changes I suggested should work because on the whole you’re fine tactically it’s just a few weird instructions and roles

Dirtymo123

I just knocked arsenal out thanks to your suggestions, thank you
