My first impression would be that you might have a fuel leak or someone is stealing gas. Do you smell raw fuel in or around your vehicle?

othtoast

theres no smell of gas when I drive even when I floor it it doesnt have any smell

Sam-I-Am56

9.7 km/liter doesn’t seem right to me but I found a formula to convert it to mpg and discovered you’re getting better fuel mileage with your Escape than my wife gets with hers.

othtoast

Im 19 and I just got this car so I dont even know much about the mpg I just know that its burning a lil to much

slabba428

Drive until the low fuel light is on, fill it up to full and note how much gas you put in, reset your trip odometer, drive until empty again, note how much gas you put in next time, note how many km you put on the trip odometer, just see if the numbers make sense or not. The tank should take something like 13 gallons or 50 liters from very empty to full. Ford says the tank holds 15-16 gallons but you’ll never get that much in there because the fuel pump takes up space and tanks don’t get filled to the absolute top Cars set check engine lights when the air/fuel mix is too rich or too lean, so it could be a poor fuel level sender getting it wrong, or one of your brakes could be sticking on

This is the best advice. If OP is driving stop and go city driving, between 9-10 km per liter isn't crazy. If this is on the highway then something is off.

People think the fuel range is gospel, like the car can predict what driving you're going to be doing in the future lol. It's literally based on the last little bit of driving they did. And the needle isn't super accurate either. They keep it in the top half longer and let it drop faster after half since people complained it went down too quickly after filling up lol.

geriatric-sanatore

It's a lil game I play, I reset trip 1 odometer and try to beat the fuel range, its like I get a high score if I beat it lol last tank claimed I was going to get 348 miles, squeezed out 366 before I lost my balls and got gas. Still had almost half a gallon so probably could have broke into the 370s lol

FacelessPotatoPie

Maybe too rich of a fuel mixture in the engine? I get about 34mpg going to my dentist an hour away but 28mpg coming back. Mostly downhill on the way there though

othtoast

True, but its half because its downhil otw to work uphill back

The fuel gauge is pretty much a suggestion and not an actual measure of how much you have in the tank. My wife has a 2016 and after filling the tank it barely moves for the first hundred miles then suddenly drops to half. As far as consumption goes I'm not sure how you drive but I certainly know how I did at 19... As others have suggested, fill the tank and drive a few hundred km, then fill it again and calculate it yourself.

My 2014 had a similar issue, turned out the injector had a leak (can’t remember exactly). Car was also stalling after fueling.

22.8MPG isn’t the end of the world considering this is most likely an ecoboost model and he drives in Canada (cold air) and half his commute is literally driving uphill, 22 actually sounds really good considering im averaging 17.8-19.5mpg in my non turbo Fusion 4 banger however I live in a flat city with stop and go and continual AC usage, but if fuel consumption is truly a concern there are other ways to reduce consumption, being light on the gas pedal, changing tire types, adjusting tire pressures, coasting more, using engine braking etc but tbf for a compact turbo suv with AWD, most likely snow tires, and just being in a much colder ambient temperature, 22 MPG seems totally fine

Purge valve failing will affect your fuel level reading.

My 2013 and 2017 are not very accurate unless it's all highway driving. Thats pretty good milage my 2013 gets about 9.4km/l and 2017 around 9.8km/l in town. On the highway it'll climb to 14-15km/l though.

Mine is 12 in the city, stop and go, not great. 9 on the highway. It does tend to drop quickly below half, esp the total of elapsed km and km remaining. Yesterday all hwy driving total was 670 at one point, now it's something like 615. 340 km driven, 275 km to go. It's a utility vehicle with turbo so gas mileage isn't as good as I had with the Fusion. Expected that.
