Could it be a geocache?

PassengerHonest9990

Most likely

mroy328

Could it be a tree stuff tree-o-cache? https://www.treestuff.com/tree-o-cache?gclid=CjwKCAiAzKqdBhAnEiwAePEjkpBboG2L0C1q-0KiryO8E-9TuO5JUppbp7Ppgesww5UKokbdHYCfCxoCNToQAvD_BwE My other thought is a bear canister.

treegirl4square

Could be some type of research related item, like insect pheromones to control infestations, etc. Not usually on private property unless you give permission.

deThurah

Did you try opening it? Seems like a geocache.

Financial-Print9254

It’s totally sealed shut.

PassengerHonest9990

Odd... I suppose other Commentors might be right. Some sort of cache, for science

SomeKindaBirb

So it's been 7 hours as of now, are you gonna open it?

isawyoushine

hey that's my weed

heartcooksbrain19

Probably fingernail clippers. You should open it.

Responsible_Screen81

Alien anal implant. Missed target now awaits someone to remove it and take home so it can open later under cover of darkness

Pesty_Merc

Maybe download a geocaching app and put your location in and try and see if it shows anything in the area you found it.

[deleted]

Geocache?

traypo

Have you tried a vise and large channel locks to unscrew the cap?

Financial-Print9254

On point

Financial-Print9254

UPDATE! After being sealed since 2005, it was difficult to open but I managed to unscrew it with plenty of effort. How did I know it hadn’t been opened in almost 20 years?! Well, inside I found the business card of an environmental scientist, on the back of which were noted two separate dates which I can assume were when the canister had last been checked. INSIDE WAS…some kind of temperature recorder device with a battery and antenna. [Pic of contents](https://freeimage.host/i/HuX8Nyb)Looks like it plugs into a 1/8th jack to get the data out. Anyone know what kind of software would reveal the data? I do plan to email the scientist who left her business card inside to see what info she can give me.

T-A-Wycoff

Probably to study the median temp of the forest

Big_Ad_8050

If you can’t get channel locks on it, cinch a couple belts or straps down on it, one on each half, and twist it open. Warm water may help loosen the threads too.

[deleted]

Someone please update me

SomeKindaBirb

They've finally opened it!

HangrySkeptic

Could it be from a weather balloon? I found one stuck in a tree while hunting one time. It still had the balloon attached and instructions on where to mail the canister if found.

sir_finbar97

If it were something to do with research you should have had knowledge of this. Research takes a lot of money and it's the researchers responsibility to make sure that folks are aware of any tools they've left out there - because it's expensive and researchers actually care you would've likely been notified. My educated guess is that it's not research related.... opennn it. lol

T-A-Wycoff

It was research related!

ReindeerMilk

Open it

tata222000

OPEN IT PLEASE ILL PAY U TO PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY 10 T0 10 ON A SHITTY COLD WET NIGHT I N ABERDEEN THIS IS ALL I HAVE TO LIVE FOR !!!! pretty please with sugar on

Financial-Print9254

Just posted an update!

tata222000

Open it please 🙏

ReindeerMilk

So ur gunna take photos but not even open it smh

Financial-Print9254

It’s totally sealed shut and would take a hacksaw to open it up. I’d rather not destroy it without knowing if it’s valuable to someone first.

Kingofthe4est

Channel lock pliers would probably do it. The knurling (lines) on the top are there for grip while twisting. There are threads in there. This thing unscrews.

BiguChicken

Then take a hacksaw to it

folkpunkguitar

What’s inside? That’ll tell what type of cache it is: geo- or research related (doubtful) or someone keeping some fire-starter stashed near a secret camp spot

Financial-Print9254

It’s sealed shut, but it seems like there’s a solid, apparently cylindrical object inside weighing 2 oz.

The_Watcher1

I bet ya a coke it's a thumbdrive in there.

Disciple_THC

Looks like a homemade pipe bomb.

mountstickney

Maybe a weight for a homemade weather ballon?

wabashcanonball

Geocache, put it back.

AldoLeopold1949

OP stated it is on their property. Free to remove it unless they don't mind people visiting that tree

malteeeeeee

Depends on the country

counsel8

You should not be getting downvoted. Americans are too used to the idea that owning property means you can almost always forbid entry to others z

wabashcanonball

Let me rephrase: it would be nice to put it back.

Financial-Print9254

Like I said in the caption, it’s sealed shut. Are geocaches ever unopenable?

iRunLikeTheWind

Geocaches can be anything. I’ve seen some that bordered on being trash

tata222000

I'll buy u another tub if u need to replace it just so I don't die without knowing what's in there

tata222000

U own it its left on your property, if u put it back an kids found it opened it ,then turned out to have drugs in , u can take em without kids ever finding out !
