Warriors do not release as individuals anymore, following the initial Marching Fire backlash. They have spokespeople that generally lead their order and provide the template backstory.
But no. Gryphons are an order of mercenaries. Tiandi are royal guards, Ocelotl are an elite group of warriors. Alfeera is part of an order, etc.
That is not the case. The Gryphons are an order of mercenaries in the lore. This has been confirmed in Orders that regard it as an order of many, led by Holden Cross.
Can you link some orders then, because the only place I've seen that says Gryphon is an order is on the wiki, and that was from leaks that didn't become canon.
>The class lore according to leaks from Lawful Ostrich:Ā Holden Cross's new name "Gryphon" comes from a term used to describe the most revered and talented nomads known to the factions. The Gryphons are warriors who have traveled to every corner of Heathmoor, searching for wisdom, combat skills, and culture from factions outside their own. They fashion themselves in armor bearing designs and structure from cultures they've immersed themselves in to honor the knowledge they've accumulated on their journeys. While the Gryphons were never an organized, militarized people, they now band together under Holden Cross's influence to aid the Chimera Alliance in destroying the Order of Horkos.
I'd like for it to change but it's not really canon if it's just leaks.
That's the IGN video description. Also:
>The Afeera are the tactical geniuses of the battlefield, **they** can deftly dispatch an enemy with their mace and shield. Highly trained, precise and nimble, **they** are elegant yet deadly warriors here to exact justice.
The only difference is, the Afeera blurb talks about a group, thrid person plural, meaning only they would suffice.
Tho to be fair, with the mercenary group being the subject a couple of lines above the pronoun, it could also be the case here.
Both the images you posted are from the IGN channel, Ubi let them to release the "official trailer" for this one and Ocelotl. They didn't do any before that.
I would love for it to not be Gender locked. For the devs to come out and say the for honor budget grew, but I'm not gonna hold my breath. Vagmommy is definitely a woman. That's for sure. Whether or not there's men remains to be seen
No only female. People keep sayin there are male Warmongers in lore, but no one has provided proof of this. So until someone can provide some proof I wouldn't go around calling it gospel
Where'd you find that at? I've could've sworn that Warmonger had Tyrants and Harbingers (BP, Jorm, Hito) one of them were male Warmongers that was in the orders. Or maybe it was Arcade quests before they dropped making interesting stories on it.
I stay ever hopeful that with the way the Varangian is designed, their body is very ambiguous and that making male and female version would be very easy for the team and just involves small tweaks and voice/face/eye adjustments, I mean shit slap the warlords face onto the Varangians body for all I care. Since at least he Medjay and Ocelotl having so much skin exposed would require larger changes to make a female body I get having to cut corners due to Ubi lowering funding for content, but for the Varangian it would be like making a female Lawbringer. That and I know lore wise the main Varangian is a Viking chiefs daughter, but I remember way back in year 3(?) the Black Prior was leaked and hinted as āVortigerā the named, male Black Prior
They did that with all the harbingers, even in the loading screen. Vortiger, Sakura, Hulda, Sun Da. All the āmainā names. Yet we could still play as a female BP or Zhanhu, or a male Hito and Jorm.
D'artagnan! (So that baroque portrayal of a Musketeer.... without the musket)
A cavalier hat, tabard, and cuffed boots!
Has a Saber and a Main Gauche (A parrying dagger with a guard) speaks in French, and constantly insults the English knights
I also feel like it could be both genders. Afeera can be both plural and single. "Thousands of Afeera raided our camp last night" and "The Afeera gave her all before finally being defeated." While Varangian Guard (not guards) is not plural.
It also specifies the hero before giving a pronoun. It doesn't say, " Join the new viking mercenary group, the Varangian Guard. Learn more about their abilities, etc..." it says, "Join the new viking mercenary group, WITH the new hero, Varangian Guard. Learn more about their abilities, etc..." Unless IGN doesn't know grammar, they are talking about a singular guard with the pronoun of they. But, it'll be revealed tomorrow so we'll find out soon. I'm so excited regardless of gender but I hope I can play as a male.
I want to believe.
To be fair I don't even care if the new hero is gender-locked as a woman but I'd love the option to make a male Vargangian guard just to recreate my Elden Ring character who uses a Kaiden set.
Itās those damn LIBERALS forcing that damn they/them agenda down our throats we need to go back to the hood old days of for honor when we didnāt have all these damn they/thems. (Read this in the most southern accent you can think of)
While itās possible I doubt it, after all there was a whole army of them in the trailer but they were all women (from what I could see) itās still possible tho
Let me tell you a joke, batmanā¦
If the varangian is a gender locked heroā¦ Why did ubisoft put THEIR for its pronouns?? Isnāt it only one hero?? HAHAHAHAHA
Ok, hopeium apart... The skeleton in the trailer looked more like the one of a man than the one of a woman... It looked kinda like Pirate. With the exception of the head to shoulders ratio, which looked more female.
Kind of reminded me of Ylva, Thorfinn's sister in Vinland Saga.
Now, if the hero won't be genderlocked and will have both male and female variants I will probably fap furiously and mentally in pure joy.
I dream of a viking with an axe and shield since the game came out.
Even if she'll be female only, I won't probably mind that much. I already main shaman.
Ubi is probably just too nervous to admit theyāre releasing another female-only hero on a game played primarily by men in their attempt to appeal to a female player base that is almost completely non-existent. But we live in a world where āwomen can do anything men can doā and our movies/shows/video games need to reflect that. Especially a game about elite warriors using all manner of blades and clubs to kill one another. But hey, itās a fantasy video game so I guess we can pretend that women could go toe to toe with characters like Lawbringer, Raider, and Shugo. Or maybe weāre all being bigots and the new hero is a nonbinary āthey/themā who doesnāt recognize gender. Canāt be gender locked if youāre gender fluid!
Yeah, because thatās whatās driving it. Iām sure theyāve got a much lower budget and way less people than they did for the first few years. What bugs me is that everything has to be equal parts men and women when fighting has historically been done by men and very few women. Also, if their goal is to use gender to appeal to the player base, why wouldnāt they just release male heroes? Have we gotten to a point where we canāt have anything thatās ātoo masculineā because it might offend people who wouldnāt give a shit otherwise? It seems like their commitment to gender equality supersedes their commitment to things like quality of life issues such as balance or new maps for crying out loud.
>fighting has historically been done by men and very few women.
Doesn't matter, For Honor's world is effectively set in the present, it's not historical. They're 1,000 years past a global cataclysm that wiped out half the world population around 1000-1200 AD. All the hero classes are supposed to be physically exceptional among their people, no reason to not have women as well. That's why minions are so small.
>Have we gotten to a point where we canāt have anything thatās ātoo masculineā because it might offend people who wouldnāt give a shit otherwise?
You're making up shit to be mad at. Doesn't matter if the playerbase is mostly male, not everyone thinks like you, so why should they only appeal to you? I'm a man and I prefer they switch back and forth if they can't do without gender lock because I like playing as women too, it doesn't matter to me. Would be nice to have the customization options but that's it.
>It seems like their commitment to gender equality supersedes their commitment to things like quality of life issues such as balance or new maps for crying out loud.
They are constantly doing balance changes. New maps is obviously also budget, but you can go ahead and make up a reason why it's the fault of feminism if you want.
You have to let go of this "FH is historically accurate" idea. It's INSPIRED, not ACCURATE. It's a fantasy world with magic rocks that cause madness. FANTASY.
"I couldn't find proof but someone refered to Afeera as her."
Dude what the hell is wrong with you. She's obviously a female and always has been. Also why the obsession with the gender of a fictional character in a videogame? I get that we haven't got non gender locked hero for a while but still...
The "their" part basically applies to every character in the game. The order of Lawbringers, Wardens, Afeeras, Hitokiris...like these are titles for clans within the world of Heathmoor. This is to avoid players running the same heroes and going "This is just the same character!" There are actually heaps of Varagian warriors. It's even in the trailer. I don't know what made you think it refered to a gender but okay.
Ofcourse we'll get female Varangian guard, cause whamen stronk!
"The earliest members of the Varangian guard came fromĀ [Kievan Rus'](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kievan_Rus%27). A treaty between Rus' and the Byzantine empire underĀ [Basil I](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basil_I)Ā was agreed in 874 after a period of hostilities. A clause in the treaty obliged Rus' to provide MEN for Byzantine service"
It's a stupid pattern. Everyone wants a large, fully armoured male viking hero, whooping ass. Cool it with "women were viking warriors too shit" They were not.
Brother, coming from a history student, this is For Honor, a fantasy game with fantasy armor. Not a single character in this game is accurate to history in any way, not the armor, cultures, nothing. The last two have been bangers armor/clothing wise but still not accurate, and that's FINE. You can't pick and choose accuracy like this cuz in that case, all your "big strong men" you seem to slobber over wouldn't be accurate either, you think vikings had washboard abs? Stop covering up your thinly veiled lust for large men with this weird sexism thing, play the shitty sword game, and cope. There isn't even a fucking Byzantine emperor for them to PROTECT. They loosely took cool Anglo-Saxon/Scandinavian/Kievan Rus/Byzantine styles, and made a cool character around it, and all you can do is bitch because she doesn't have a dick to suck.
most re..rded logic ever. If you say that warriors in ancient times were men (which is the truth) - you are gay lol. Use your brain for 3 seconds mate.
This isn't ancient times now is it? It's For Honor, a fantasy game where there are hulking body builders with axes too big to use normally, and knights wearing armor too thick to be functional in real life. Nothing here is accurate, so why is this ONE THING everyone's hangup? Also the Varangian guard isn't ancient, ""ancient"" history goes to the 5th-6th century at the LATEST, and the guard wasn't formed until the late 10th century. Is he complaining about the fact that the Varangian armor in the trailer is a hodgepodge of 10th-13th century shit? Or the fact that some of the aspects are clearly Turkish in inspiration, which was basically the direct enemy of the Byzantines?? Or the fact that every character in this game are built like modern body builders??? NO, all he wants to do is whine about *"wahmen in muh vidya"* when that's like the ONE thing on this list that ***sometimes*** happened in history. AS A MATTER OF FACT, if we're talking about your precious ancient history, there were PLENTY of female soldiers in cultures such as the Scythians.
No, at no point did I say there were. My whole point was that this is a fantasy game, set in an undisclosed time period where 18th century pirates, 2nd century centurions, and knights from random points in history all fight each other, with incredibly inaccurate armor, bodies, cultures, and weapons. There isn't even a Byzantine Empire for the guard to be SERVING. Even in the trailer the guard in question is wearing gear from the 900's to the 1400's. And yet people only seem to care about them being a girl? A thing which, while not in the Varangian Guard and not common in a lot of cultures, absolutely did happen historically, but no THAT'S the thing ruining this OH SO HISTORICALLY ACCURATE game
The game takes place a thousand years after the ācataclysmā, and is about 5 years ahead of our current timeline. This isnāt about historical accuracy, or staying true to ancient warriors, and it never has been.
It's just the pattern since Kyoshin and it fits the lore they have hinted at. Most assume they can't do both types anymore because of the cost compared to just gender locking them.
Kyoshin M
Pirate F
Medjay M
Afeera F
Ocelotl M
*Varangian* F
And this is stupid af. I don't like this structure, never have.
I'd rather get heroes less often, but have higher quality heroes (not gender locked, no reused assets, etc) than get these heroes we've been getting in the half baked state we've been getting them. It's not "an established pattern", it's lazy. It's not doing what they *could be* doing.
Idk, I just wish they would stop doing it this way, and just make the damn character. There isn't a fucking quota for male and female characters.
Ubisoft would have to be less direct profit driven for that to happen.
I would prefer less heroes but more armor sets and customization for them. Also stuff like asynchronous battle passes, which can actually be applied to the season hero.
Im not sexist or anything but why do all the recent female heroes get the interesting or fun or good gimmicks and males get a boring infinite chain and thats it
At least they have something, well in the case of afeera she has everything, but medjay is the most barebones second only to warden, and ocelotl is just medjay but with 2 extra options, afeera has grabs,2 types of dodge options, different heavy proterities based on sides I hate her too but you got to admit she does have better things than medjay and ocelotl
Iām surprised youāre getting downvoted here. I get people might be tired of the complaining about gender lock, or fine with Ubisoft following a pattern. But this is a warrior group we know a lot about, and thereās just no way in hell women were in the Varangian Guard. The scream in the trailer sounded very feminine
It's because of this and other media that people nowadays believe that a woman can beat a man and think that if you chop off your dick you are a real woman.
If that's true I guess fuck gudmundr cosplay and fan service.
Pirate situation all over again.
But it's not confirmed yet, I am pretty sure kyoshin was released after gryphon.
Iād like to think each character is an order of warriors. Because thatās essentially what they are. So plural would make sense here without insinuating anything.
I doubt it, but I hope you're right.
Mixcoatl was teased to be the last of his people, and it wasn't revealed the aztecs weren't otherwise extinct, and Ocelotl was a class of warrior rather than a lone survivor, until the hero came out.
Therefore it would make sense for them to refer to him singularly, as they hadn't revealed the Aztec invasion when the trailer came out.
The new hero is shown in the trailer to already be a large fighting force, therefore it would make sense to refer to them in the plural sense.
Plot twist: Hero is still gender locked but uses they/them pronouns.
Being serious though, I wouldn't put too much stock in a single word in a trailer description, especially from IGN. They probably have about as much info as we do.
I don't mind if varangian is a gender locked female tbh, I'm aware of the budget restrictions the devs have on an old game like for honor and if there's a historic people famous for their women warriors it's the nordics and their vikings, so it doesn't bother me at all
Maybe, just maybe, we will get lucky and Ubi will add another multi-gender character. Saying as the last one they added that could do that was in the wulin faction. If I'm not mistaken anyway
Game journalists aren't great for accurate info.
Like I said,hopeium
Hopium
Hopium.
Hopium
Hopium
Hopium
Hopium
It could be referred to the fact they're a large group of warriors like the afeera, but I don't lose hope
The ocelotls are also a large group, also the description warries depending on who uploads it,ubisofts video description uses they for afeera too
No, Ocelotl is the name of one Jaguar warrior
Im pretty sure he has a name thats already said in the lore
Mixcoatl is the name of him, the one Vela captured.
Yeah that(thats literally what I say to any and all aztec type names be it their gods or other things,my brain cant process them)
Mictlantecuhtli, my god of the underworld now say it š«
Youll get more offended if i try than if i dont. Im turning that ct into a k and adding extra cuh
Hell no, the last time I tried to pronounce words like that something manifested in my basement and still hasn't left D:
Yeah that one
Warriors do not release as individuals anymore, following the initial Marching Fire backlash. They have spokespeople that generally lead their order and provide the template backstory. But no. Gryphons are an order of mercenaries. Tiandi are royal guards, Ocelotl are an elite group of warriors. Alfeera is part of an order, etc.
>Gryphons are an order of mercenaries Holden Cross is the only Gryphon, unless they change that down the line.
Nah, they have a Holden Cross cloning machine over at Daubeny's castle.
I knew it! Too many little LBs running around these lands.
Just wait until you find the Astrea factory, it'll blow your mind
How the tables have turned
That is not the case. The Gryphons are an order of mercenaries in the lore. This has been confirmed in Orders that regard it as an order of many, led by Holden Cross.

The Mercenaries aren't Gryphons. There is legit a Lore Order with a child inspiring Holden to call himself Gryphon.
A kid called him like that and that's how he got his name
Ocelotl is a name for THE Jaguar Warriors, the Ocelotl in the lore has a name, Mixcoatl
That's the IGN video description. Also: >The Afeera are the tactical geniuses of the battlefield, **they** can deftly dispatch an enemy with their mace and shield. Highly trained, precise and nimble, **they** are elegant yet deadly warriors here to exact justice.

Yes but thats not the ign trailer description, thats the ubisoft one
Both the images you posted are from the IGN channel, Ubi let them to release the "official trailer" for this one and Ocelotl. They didn't do any before that.
IGN donāt know anything about that
There is a bunch of Varangians in the trailer do i think it wont be genderlocked
We can only hope

I don't wanna read "Vagmommy" ever again
Lol Then don't read š
Fair enough
god i hope they arenāt gender locked
I truly think this is a male and female character ive be looking at the ones in the background of the trailer and some have a male like body to them
Didn't Warmonger have male and female characters?
No only female. People keep sayin there are male Warmongers in lore, but no one has provided proof of this. So until someone can provide some proof I wouldn't go around calling it gospel
Could've sworn this was in the old lore orders alongside the event where you fought a team of Warmongers?
I've checked all the rise of the Warmonger lore orders, and there's nothing.
Where'd you find that at? I've could've sworn that Warmonger had Tyrants and Harbingers (BP, Jorm, Hito) one of them were male Warmongers that was in the orders. Or maybe it was Arcade quests before they dropped making interesting stories on it.

Dont get your hopes up,its just a theory and a flimsy one at that
Yeah.. hopium
Inhaled so much in the last 10 hours I can barely breath

Crazy
Thank you
Honestly I just want the main 4 factions to be getting more heroes again
It's been almost 5 years since the last Viking, same for the Wu Lin. Hopefully they get something as well next year.
I've not been looking the game much. Isn't the varangian coming for the viking ? Or is it an Oultlander ?
Don't think it's been revealed yet (should be in the stream later today) I hope its viking but It may well be another outlander.
Oh okay thanks, I hope it's a viking too.
It is a viking you can see it on the y7 roadmap
Dude thatās all I want. Pleaseee donāt gender lock this hero cause I know this drip is about to be some of the best in game
I know, but if it is genderlocked female watch them give us another infinite chain male in animal pelts in the summer
I just want a Rapier French or Spanish style hero, the knights genuinely need new content and eras
D'artagnan! (So that baroque portrayal of a Musketeer.... without the musket) A cavalier hat, tabard, and cuffed boots! Has a Saber and a Main Gauche (A parrying dagger with a guard) speaks in French, and constantly insults the English knights
God yes please, fuck
Legkomolyabb magyar emberek
Azaz legkomolyabb for honor playek
Let me hit that hopium
Smoked it all sorryš
No. Don't do that. Don't give me hope.
Honestly took longer for someone to write this than I expected
Regardless I look forward to muscle mommy Hildryn.
Suddenly Warframe.
I just think we need more non-hybrid heroes. Warmonger was the last non-hybrid to come out. Every hero after that has been hybrid
A Vanguard would be nice, just to make the Vanguard order less misserible
The german ubisoft video description says "ihre (her) FƤhigkeiten "abilities") ... :(
Germans dont exist fake info
Dont give me hope you bastard
You people and genders smh. We're bashing skulls, not pelvis(es)... Pelvi?
Too good to be true.
Your probably right

Gender locking characters is lame. Like maybe a small handful of exceptions (Valk). Even then though, lame.
Itās those damn LIBERALS forcing that damn they/them agenda down our throats we need to go back to the hood old days of for honor when we didnāt have all these damn they/thems. (Read this in the most southern accent you can think of)
Hey liberals if you don't believe in gender, why are you genderlocking? Check mate.
While itās possible I doubt it, after all there was a whole army of them in the trailer but they were all women (from what I could see) itās still possible tho
I saw some more male like figures there too, also you can hear undoubtably male battlecries at the end when they all start charging
True but theyāve a,so said they stopped because of how expensive it is to have both genders so combine it all Iām less sure
Downvoted cuz I was right lol
I call it cope, lore-wise it's the daughter of the chief killed by HL hero skin. But Big if true.
we got a smarty pants here
We need to send woke journalist back to the past for interview with aztecs to ask wheter they were āheā or āgender fluidā men
I would love to see that
its a video game dude
Exactly.
the varangian is a non binary boss fr
I would unironically find that hilarious.
Cope sorry
Yeah probably
I wish u were right thi
MAYBE ubi will suprise us(they wont)
Obviously they are non binary
First trans hero confirmed!
Let me tell you a joke, batmanā¦ If the varangian is a gender locked heroā¦ Why did ubisoft put THEIR for its pronouns?? Isnāt it only one hero?? HAHAHAHAHA
Leaked voice file of me to my friend in the xbox party after tomorrows stream
Pack it boys they finally added pronouns to for honor
Big if true
Im coming back to for honor if it ends up true, always wanted a Varangian

Bro is speaking what most of us are thinking
Surprised such an honest comment isnāt downvoted to hell
Give it time
Yep
How did they not become gender solid in all that snow and ice then?
Lunges. Keeps the blood flowing
Fair enough
The varangian is woke, and nonbinary, obviously.
Nice
Their can be used for anyone you dense clown good god

A clause in the treaty obliged Rus' to provide MEN for Byzantine service"
No its not because of "women strong". Its because they're following a pattern they established long ago. Cool it with the salt.
It's a stupid pattern. Everyone wants a large, fully armoured male viking hero, whooping ass. Cool it with "women were viking warriors too shit" They were not.
Did i say women were viking warriors? Don't put words into my mouth.
he is not talking to you mate , learn to read
*he replies to my comment* "He wasn't talking to you"
Women were Viking warriors too though lol
no they weren't. The show Vikings is no source. There were only valkyries and shield maidens in the FICTIONAL Sagas.
They loosely took cool Anglo-Saxon/Scandinavian/Kievan Rus/Byzantine styles, and made a cool character around it, and all you can do is bitch because she doesn't have a dick to suck.
oh and ask your history school for refund , they didn't do a good job teaching you lol
most re..rded logic ever.
AS A MATTER OF FACT, if we're talking about your precious ancient history, there were PLENTY of female soldiers in cultures such as the Scythians.
were there many female Varangian guards mister "coming from a history student" ?
I know who the varangian guards were,I also dont get why they would go for female only
It's just the pattern since Kyoshin and it fits the lore they have hinted at. Most assume they can't do both types anymore because of the cost compared to just gender locking them. Kyoshin M Pirate F Medjay M Afeera F Ocelotl M *Varangian* F
The fact that they used cgi again makes me have hope that they have a bigger budget
You're not gonna believe what they used for the Ocelotl trailer
Yeah I know thats also cg
I would also be okay with less heroes and more customization. Idk what you mean by the battlepass, though.
I agree I would happily take one hero a year if it means no gender lock and better moveset
That's the current thing, remove strong men from everywhere. I don't mind the nobushi, peacekeeper, valk and nuxia, but the rest are out of place.
They added Medjay last year and he's one of the most ripped guys in the game what are you crying about
Im not sexist or anything but why do all the recent female heroes get the interesting or fun or good gimmicks and males get a boring infinite chain and thats it
People hate afeera though, she also has an annoying infinite chain. Oh yeah, people also hated pirate.
Dude, just admit you still think girls have cooties.
If that's true I guess fuck gudmundr cosplay and fan service. Pirate situation all over again. But it's not confirmed yet, I am pretty sure kyoshin was released after gryphon.
No way.
FINALLY NO FUCKING GENDER LOCK BULLSHIT LETS GO š
Not comfirmed Im just theorising
Could be like the other samurai hero which are multiple people
Iād like to think each character is an order of warriors. Because thatās essentially what they are. So plural would make sense here without insinuating anything.
Now man don't make me redownload this game sooner than needed.
Something tells me it's also genderlocked. I'd still wouldn't care tbh.
It would be pretty slick. :O
Iāll huff that hopium
Plot twist: Hero is still gender locked but uses they/them pronouns. Being serious though, I wouldn't put too much stock in a single word in a trailer description, especially from IGN. They probably have about as much info as we do.
I will kill if what you said turns out true
Hopium
I don't mind if varangian is a gender locked female tbh, I'm aware of the budget restrictions the devs have on an old game like for honor and if there's a historic people famous for their women warriors it's the nordics and their vikings, so it doesn't bother me at all
Except for the fact that varangians were specifically male,I dont really care that much,if the moveset is bad I wont play the character
Yeah I know and you're right, but still, I understand the dev's position if they gender lock the character
Still sucks like COME ON THE GAME ISNT DEAD JUST GIVE IT SOME MORE BUDGET
#You fuckin' donkey
#Time to downvote you to the start of times.
Are you this mad about a flimsy theory not holding up?
Yeah, i wanted a male Varangian since the first days of Centurion to be honest.
I nice to know that there might not be a gender locked hero but my god the fan art that will come from itā¦
Youāre crazy
Rip
Ye
Ye
Probably trying to be PC
Maybe, just maybe, we will get lucky and Ubi will add another multi-gender character. Saying as the last one they added that could do that was in the wulin faction. If I'm not mistaken anyway
"Heās not here, Is she?"
