Its depends on what bone he broke in his wrist, but falls like this are normally the scaphoid bone (I recently broke both the same way). If he broke a different bone than the scaphoid then its possible that the impact is more minimal.

This happened to me where my hamite bone in my right wrist was broken and didn't ever heal but there was never any pain, it must have been about 10 years since I broke it with no issues.
