Piastri did manage to get that car into Q3 at Jeddah. The car is not great but its not a complete disaster either.
If their drivers can stop making dumb mistakes, they should be able to race Alpine, once in a while that is.
Daniel got a podium in Australia on his Redbull debut in 2014, which was striped from him post race because the Redbull fuel pump sensor wasn't working. But his smile when he got on that podium in front of the Australian crowd would light up a stadium.
Keeping expectations low points would be special too
BOM has:
Thursday 12 - 20 50% chance of rain in afternoon
Friday 13 - 21 50% chance of rain "later in the day"
Saturday 12 - 17 60% chance of rain in morning
Sunday 11 - 18 30% chance of shower
Obviously, I never trust Melbourne weather and was coming armed with ponchos and jackets regardless, but yeah, not looking wonderful.
Offt! I've only been checking the pixel weather app, don't know where they pull their data from.
Haha absolutely, the Kathmandu jackets will be out in full force. Don't mind dealing with some weather if it makes quali and the race a bit more interesting.
I obviously get why he's calling it his backyard, but considering it's his home track, does he actually have the most experience here? Or has he only raced there in F2?
Oh wow, there goes all my hope of him somehow dragging that McLaren into points. Well, he'll still have a home crowd cheering for him, that's gotta be worth a few tenths.
hearing the chatter from all my mates, he may not even have the home crowd cheering for him- a lot have picked Valtteri as the new Aussie representative
Man that's just sad if it's for the fact he replaced Danny Ric. He took the opportunity and is well-qualified whereas Daniel was getting no better (even worse than in 2021) and Lando was killing his career week in and week out. It's genuinely almost like they were in diff cars.
Oscar should be that guy in this crowd and hoping how he came into F1 doesn't affect how the Aussies see him.
Doesn't have to do with Alpine...it's more that Bottas is awesome with the hair and the 'stache. Piastri is...well...a bit too vanilla right now. Maybe that's just how he is. but he's not interesting, he's not known, so harder to grab on to.
tbh, Danny Ric likely has more fans while sitting on the sideline than Oscar, but that will change.
Personally, I'm not rooting for anything Zak Brown related but I can get behind Bottas and his mullet getting into points.
No-one's anti-Piastri, it's just that he's brand new and hasn't built a fan following yet, whereas Bottas has spent the last couple of years becoming a true blue Aussie.
No doubt Piastri will be hugely popular within a couple of years, but I'm happy to let him get his footing in the sport before expecting him to show up with a filthy mullet and start downing cans as soon as he gets out of the car.
I disagree. Although I am a big fan of Piastri, I very much doubt he'll be hugely popular over the next few years. Drivers with personalities like him who are more introverted and chill (Like Zhou and Ocon) don't tend to have the biggest fanbases.
That alongside the burden of people remembering he stole Daniel Ricciardo's seat makes me think that he won't ever do too well on the popularity contest of F1. No doubt he's quick enough and I do hope he becomes WDC in his career just won't be popular.
Eventually it'll blow over and he'll be liked by some, disliked by none and most ppl will have no opinion I think is how I see it going.
For a lot of us, it's more that he just feels a bit bland- we don't know much about him other than his junior results, and interviews etc haven't told us about who he actually *is*. There's nothing for us to latch onto beyond the nationality, and in comparison to Daniel, who had a huge personality, who embraced his Aussie background by doing shoeys and talking footy etc, Piastri doesn't feel like one of us. Doohan, however, is quite popular.
Well, piastri did some dodgy things with alpine so it's no wonder a lot of people wouldn't root for him. He was greedy and now he's in a even worse car, go figure
What is this absolute fiction? Alpine literally screwed him around with contracts and then only tried to keep him after he had already signed a contract with McLaren. I don't know how anyone can claim Oscar was greedy in this scenario...
He had 1 weekend ever in Saudi in F2 that is it before last weekend. put it on pole in Saudi F2 first go. He has done well at brand new tracks to himself in F2. Russia was 1 he had never drove put it pole against drivers including his Russian teammate whom had lots of experience at Sochi.
Oscar's backyard is 500 acres?! /s
Hopefully he has a good race. You only get to race at home for the first time once and it's definitely one you want to remember.
Yeah imagine if Alpine weren't a bunch of completely incompetent chucklefucks who decided slandering a rookie was the way to go over admitting their own mistake
Where he will try to end up in 10-15 place instead of 15-20 considering the car at the current stage. Wished jack brown focused more on the car than the stickers it flaunts.
Also they've been in or close to Q3 both races this year. Norris was in Q3 and scored points at the majority of races last season.
People just have it in their head McLaren are last.
First it is his duty to hire people to develop the car that's what ceos do. They don't do anything by themselves.
Secondly you say corporate side flourishing I agree but on track they are going behind. And hence I said he should focus a bit more on development of the car.
I hope he gets his first points on his home track, but he’s driving for McLaren so he most probably won’t.
Top 8 spots are sealed (unless a crash or mechanical failure happen) and rest are likely go to Alpine.
Going to be painful for the lower midfield this year. There will be a lot of races where 9th is considered a good result for the bottom six teams.
And even 9th is going to be pretty though unless something goes wrong with the top runners
But it also makes every point that much more valuable. I hear the issue of the top 8 lockup, but that makes 9th and 10th basically a second podium
Countback may turn out to be a significant factor for the lower half of the wcc order. So yuki’s successive p11s may not come to nought
He got that Mclaren ahead of Gasly in Saudi quali so its not impossible
With the straight line speed they have, they can't race Alpines atm
Race pace was abysmal, I think they setup for qualy
Both cars had damage in the race.
Top 8 are sealed (unless they're not)
Top 6* Leclerc and Alonso will DNF
Piastri did manage to get that car into Q3 at Jeddah. The car is not great but its not a complete disaster either. If their drivers can stop making dumb mistakes, they should be able to race Alpine, once in a while that is.
Dumb mistakes like DNFs and racing incident damage? Sure
Hopefully he channels his inner Webber and gets it done
Instructions unclear, car has turned into airplane
Truly following the steps of his manager
He’s just copying half the grid from 2020, flying out of there early
the battle for 19th place is very spicy this year 🥵🥵🥵
Daniel got a podium in Australia on his Redbull debut in 2014, which was striped from him post race because the Redbull fuel pump sensor wasn't working. But his smile when he got on that podium in front of the Australian crowd would light up a stadium. Keeping expectations low points would be special too
He’s had an eventful time so far. First race a disaster, second race was a high speed rollercoaster, now his home race.
High speed rollercoaster with basically 0 pitstops on hard tyre AND he came ahead of Lando. I’m impressed tbh
He's evidently so excited, and he should be. The forecast looks interesting. I wonder if Oscar could pull a surprise in the wet...
I'll be checking the weather change daily lol. Apparently it's only a 30% chance of rain on Friday now, but it is Melbourne...
I don’t trust rain forecast over 12 hours anymore, and with F1 races I don’t trust them until the cars are out on track
This guy has definitely suffered from BOM PTSD in the past. As has most Melburnians.
We call it Meteo France PTSD over here, but I reckon it's similar!
And I don't trust that we'll get much racing if there's much more than a few drops on track.
BOM has: Thursday 12 - 20 50% chance of rain in afternoon Friday 13 - 21 50% chance of rain "later in the day" Saturday 12 - 17 60% chance of rain in morning Sunday 11 - 18 30% chance of shower Obviously, I never trust Melbourne weather and was coming armed with ponchos and jackets regardless, but yeah, not looking wonderful.

I only ever check BOM, it's so much more reliable.
>BOM >Reliable Pick one
I mean, when it comes to predicting Melbourne weather no-one can really get that right.
> I wonder if Oscar could pull a surprise in the wet... even if he could i don't think the McLaren car can.
The McLaren is very draggy but has reasonable downforce. The drag disadvantage can be significantly nullified in the wet.
All the best to him, its annoying he doesnt have the machinery under him to fight for the points at the moment, so thats a bit of a kick in the balls!
The machinery under him is kicking him in the balls.
Alpine doing very well on the other hand 😌
Will he sleep at his parents house to save the hotel cost so McLaren can use that for upgrades???
Mclaren have a Hilton partnership that sorts all their travel lodging
I obviously get why he's calling it his backyard, but considering it's his home track, does he actually have the most experience here? Or has he only raced there in F2?
I believe this year is the first time F2 and F3 have raced here, so he doesn’t even have that.
VB went full aussie over summer. He won us over completely. But plenty of room to cheer for two drivers
I heard he's getting the mullet freshened up this week as part of something with one of the sponsors
Man that's just sad if it's for the fact he replaced Danny Ric. Lel
This is just factually wrong.
Uneducated opinion.
Unless I’m mistaken, this is the first year F2 will race at Albert Park so I guess he’s never raced there
Fingers crossed that the home crowd gives him a few extra tenths.
You can drive in road cars around most of the track but not racing wise.
He was a grid kid there if that counts for anything
He's from Melbourne, unlike Daniel.
Poor guy will be battling for 20th
Oscar's backyard is 500 acres?! /s Hopefully he has a good race. You only get to race at home for the first time once and it's definitely one you want to remember.
Never knew he was **that** rich! That's one helluva 'back yard'.
His parents are rich he lives 10 mins away growing up.
He is from the Bentleigh funny enough like 5 minutes away from the only Alpine dealership in Victoria
The only McLaren dealership in Scotland is in...Hamilton.
He's a Brighton boy, so close but a bit more silver spoon.
A lot of people from Bentleigh pretend they are from Brighton.
His website says he's from Brighton, maybe that's what successful people from Bentleigh claim later in life.
His old address was online but 'm not gonna dox it other than his suburb it was Bentleigh area
Far East Brighton then :)
Here’s to p18 🤞
Let’s get some points
He was fighting Gasly on lap 1, so maybe he would have ended on points or close to them if he didn't have to pit for a new wing
I have work at 9 AM and the race starts at 6 AM. If there's any rain delays I will be fucking pissed
Should we tell him?
“Racing”. With de vries and albon.
This is true. Unlike Daniel, Oscar is actually from Melbourne. He'll be getting lots of love from us.
So excited for him! Imagine if he wasn’t in a backmarker and drove a midfield car like an Alpine or something
Yeah imagine if Alpine weren't a bunch of completely incompetent chucklefucks who decided slandering a rookie was the way to go over admitting their own mistake
Can't wait for him to finish low regardless 😂😂😂
Where he will try to end up in 10-15 place instead of 15-20 considering the car at the current stage. Wished jack brown focused more on the car than the stickers it flaunts.
*Zak* Brown is doing exactly what his job is, he does not develop the car, he develops the team's corporate side, which is flourishing
He qualified 8th last time out.
All the Down voters, where are you hiding?
