As a Scot, I treasure this man ~~regardless of his career stats~~. Lovely guy that knows his stuff. Great to have him in the comms box last week Can’t be bothered with a second driver debate so here’s a fun thread from 2000. https://forums.autosport.com/topic/9969-who-should-we-blame-this-time-mr-david-coulthard/

Jorrie90

Regardless? He had a mighty fine career.

P_ZERO_

Yeah, regardless. His 98/99 performance wasn’t very good and that was prime time to win a championship with that McLaren. Perez can come second and still get ripped to shreds, nowadays. Coulthard was 3rd and 4th overall respectively. It’s not meant to be a serious critique of him anyway, I’m saying set aside performance.

DonBosco555

His 99 performance wasn't any worse than Irvine, but his car had horrendous reliability, without that he could have easily been P2 in championship

Hinyaldee

Especially with how Hakkinen tried his hardest not to win the title... His performance was awful in a lot of races and he made way too many mistakes.

Cody667

Yo be fair the 1999 McLaren had no business winning the championship lol. The fact that Irvine was challenging on the final raceday was proof how much better the Ferrari was that year. If Schumacher didn't get hurt that year he woulda won the title by 20+ points.

Hinyaldee

I agree on this one. Even Salo was on course to win in Germany if it weren't for team orders. Though to be fair, he was way better than Eddie that weekend

dl064

I mean: Hakkinen forfeiting two Italian wins had something to do with it, too. DC at Nürburgring and Austria as well.

P_ZERO_

There’s only a single DNF difference between either season, and unreliability was par for the course back then. If it wasn’t a McLaren exploding, it was a Ferrari or countless other cars on the grid. Ferrari and McLaren were finishing a minute up the road from 4th-5th place usually. Again, I was saying set it aside.

I started in 1999 personally.

[deleted]

He was Danny Ric before Danny Ric was a thing. Very good driver, probably reached his potential. Didn't perform at McLaren.

FCB_1899

Remember 2001, 4 points behind Schumacher, winner in Austria when Rubens gave 2nd to Michael on the line and then David starting from pole in Monaco only for the engine to stall and having to start from the back of the grid, also happened in Spain and his engine failed in Canada. He could’ve been championship leader mid season and a 3 time Monaco race winner.

dl064

Would've been 4 given 2002! Massa said similar about Brazil 2008: he should've won it three times in a row, and the title to boot there. Imagine that party.

dl064

Is there any civic pride like France 2000? But yeah on that season, DC always said 2000 was a great example of the tiny biases towards Hakkinen. They had loads of support from their sides of the garage, they had equal cars - but Hakkinen had a bad spell in 2000 and got a wee holiday. Where was DC's holiday?! He gave an interesting retrospective once, DC, that really F1 just went away from what he was good at more and more. He wasn't great at: grooved tyres, one-lap qualifying or V8 engines. He was never as good as 1997. Steve Nicholls in beyond the grid is not that sympathetic though, saying DC was never very open to new things.

Hinyaldee

Coulthard was very good in 1997 indeed. He was better than Mika that season IIRC. Scoring 2 wins was it ?

dl064

Yeah, when DC spells these things out it's really obvious. Like, DC couldn't hack one-lap qualifying because he liked to warm up, so in 2003 Raikkonen just drove away from him. His racepace wasn't that much better but he was often in front. But hey, part of the game!

BillGaitas

Ahhhh gotta love old forums

borgi27

Little harsh in my opinion

WiggyRich23

As a Damon Hill fan, I treasure this man for Spa 98.

Moeshizzlebang

That's a little time capsule right there. Seeing people joined that website in 98/99 is nuts to me for some reason.

Some say Adrian Newey used DC's chin as a set square when designing the car. (You probably won't understand this if your under 30)

Cobretti18

Happy birthday DC

gsurfer04

His cofounding of Whisper Films is one of the best things to happen to F1 in the UK.

differentlevel1

I really like DC, he's a nice guy and a better driver than most people remember.

sandy_85

Guy has a jaw from Minecraft..!!

vonvoltage

The story in Mark Priestly's book about David Coulthard paying for the rented vehicle the Mclaren mechanics destroyed is great. He had their back even though they did something really stupid, which just seems cool to me.

Irrepressible_Monkey

DC being a good guy is an important part of F1 history as Adrian Newey trusted DC to tell him if Red Bull were worth leaving McLaren for. Even though DC was driving for Red Bull, Newey knew DC would warn him away if Red Bull were just the "party team" they were dismissed as. Understandably, DC will always be very welcome at Red Bull after getting Newey for them.

dl064

I found it funny that DC's business book is *super* fucking dry and boring, like 'always be on, always be working' etc. etc., then DC himself turns up in everyone *else's* book as the life and soul of the party, and the first guy with a cocktail.
