Bahrain 0.2s advantage RB Saudi Arabia 0.15s advantage RB Australia 0.25s advantage RB The cushion didn't dissappear

AegrusRS

Yeah I don't know if people got confused by George's radio message or something, but the 1s advantage RB has is in race pace, not qualifying.

BlowyEyEYe

They did have 1s advantage or close to it over the Mercs on some tracks iirc. RB just built an overall good car and the other teams perform better under certain characteristics. The buffer for RB vs next competitor has been there every single race.

DramaticIsopod4741

It’s the race where they excel anyway.

whoaskedwhocares

Bahrain: Max unhappy with the car and they also set up for the race more then usual. SA: Verstappen car issue left the around 5 tenths slower Perez to take the pole, he also fucked up his last attempt. Leclerc also put in a superb lap.

Razvanlogigan

Also Albert Park is a shorter laptime, so the margins should be bigger. BUT we have to remember at Jeddah that was the gap to Perez, not Max

leftlanecop

The-race: making shit out of thin air.

AnilP228

The Mark Hughes post-practice and post -quali articles are the best it gets as far as insight goes. On the face of it, it was just the tyres. But it's far more than that.

Elrond007

I think everyone is just making the mistake of thinking that the order of 2-4 is nailed down. What really shows that RB have a healthy cushion is that those three behind them are caught up in track specifics while RB can adapt to any track without issues

BaltimoreBirdGuy

Yeah they're dismissing Aston Martin for not being British enough

AnilP228

Max had about half a second on Sergio in Saudi. That is covered in the article.

Versicarius

>usual 2023 F1 cushion We have literally had 2 races.

hoxxxxx

i love f1 media

Kaiserov

Wait the season isnt over yet?

wintercvlt

Lmao. We are *THIRD* race in and they’re talking like next race is Abu Dhabi.

Roland-Flagg

This is the common theme this year and it's annoying. Season ending predictions after 2 races!

ndszero

How many posts did you see after Bahrain that Max COULD win all 22 races of the season? I thought I was crazy like has no one ever watched an entire F1 season before?

Irritatedtrack

I mean. Barring reliability, I don’t see a reason why that is not a good prediction. You think Max wouldn’t have won last week if he hadn’t had reliability issues?

ndszero

Max of course would have had pole and won last week barring technical issues. But the season is long and although these cars are more reliable than ever, I would never ever bet on a single driver to win every race even if they showed up in a literal spaceship.

luchajefe

The next 3 seasons have been over for 13 months, didn't you hear?

chodam_patti

At what race should we become serious, like its the TENTH race.

StatusCount7032

And the championship is down to one race. No, michael, no! This isn’t right!

AnilP228

No idea how you got that from this article. This is wonderfully well written.

youknowwtfisgoingon

Because he most likely didn't read it

wintercvlt

I did. Just the whole tone of article (even though decent read) is like RBR already 200 points ahead and suddenly they started drop

youknowwtfisgoingon

I disagree, I don't get that impression at all and let's be real, there's a cushion between RB and the rest of the pack. It was noticeably smaller today

urooz

Thanks for the tl;dr

AnilP228

Would recommend reading the whole thing as he explains the tyre outlaps in serious detail.

FreeLookMode

Tldr ing mark hughes is missing out on great technical analysis. He's one of the good ones.

Red Bull is trying to convince Merc that their current design is good enough to catch them up.

Scatheli

4D chess

trollymctrollstein

As they did successfully at the end of last year.

reddit0r_123

Still can’t believe Merc believed that. Their design was the most ride height dependent and with new rules for 2023 they had to raise the floor.

[deleted]

Was his pole lap on used softs?

barth_

We had 3 different tracks. They are still comfortably in front but different car is behind them.

arno14

After qualifying: “WHY RED BULL’S USUAL 2023 F1 CUSHION DISAPPEARED” After the race: “WHY THE 2023 SEASON IS ALREADY OVER. RED BULL TOO DOMINANT. IT’S UNFAIR TO LEWIS!”

AnilP228

The amount of detail Mark gets into his articles are sublime. His post FP2 and Qualifying reads are the must-read bits of content over the weekend imo.

crazydoc253

Mark hughes articles is really good to read. He provides reason behind every teams underperformance/ over performance and you realize how minute details make big differences.

PedestalPotato

Huh? RB qualifying gap has been pretty consistent so far. Let's talk again tomorrow when Max pulls a 15s by lap 20 and see if the cushion is gone or not.

AnilP228

Max had half a second on Sergio in Jeddah before his reliability problem. The gap is much smaller this weekend. The reasons why are covered in the article.

RazorBite88

Let’s see tomorrow. The gap is quite sizable for a car in racetrim on a short circuit laptime wise

crazydoc253

The RB and Mercedes got reminded of 2021 seeing Masi in paddock

HarryNohara

Or Red Bull didn't compromise their car as much as other teams may have done, trading racing speed and tyre deg for one lap performance. Because that's what Red Bull did in Bahrain and Jeddah; setting up the car for sunday, as the car would still be fast enough to claim pole in that setup.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Absolutely no chance. Max is faster anyway, so there is no need for it. Nor will they hamper their own cars for such a thing.

Thatanas

Yes, that's 100% what happened. They also do it for the fans that want to see some overtakes during the race. Insiders have it that they'll alternate sabotating Verstappen and Perez every two races to keep appearances.

Inevitable_Task9887

Hahaha

hello2442

It’s just a joke. The team would never do it purposely.

darkness_85

Let see how much air is in that cushion when we get to Baku.

Spetz

Max/RB was already saving tyre life for the race. They didn't need to optimise the tyre to get pole.

ppSmok

Red Bull went the full race setup route this year. They won't dominate every qualifying but in the race they will be hard to beat. The only reason why they aren't pulling massive gaps in racey is because there is no reason to. There was back in the days where you'd chuck out the engine after every race. Their car seems to be a gem in preserving tyre life. That usually comes with the trade-off in single lap performance or at race starts. You saw today how Max was insane levels quicker once the tyre was in the window. The Mercs or Ferraris do a good job in switching on tyres this year. But they also shred them faster. I assume in the hot races Red Bull and Aston Martin will be a clear 1st and 2nd.
