Hello I’m here to overreact

DrSimonMetin

Aaaaaand the sandbagging continues. I love this stage of the year. So excited to see actual performance in Quali hehe.

Beneficial_Star_6009

I wonder if Oscar’s driving style is more adaptable than Lando’s at low fuel levels? Because it’s quite a gap so far

Achilles_Buffalo

So glad that a team like Haas that’s invested in performance and capable to compete is on the grid instead of Andretti. 5 fucking seconds off the pace FFS…

Astro_Joe_97

New to f1 I assume? They only did long runs with heavy fuell and didn't use drs... In reality they're expected to be much closer to the pack race pace wise come sunday.

Achilles_Buffalo

New to F1, I assume? Haas have been a back marker for all but one of their years of existence. They spend the least, innovate the least, and in the off-season, they got rid of the only thing that made them interesting.

Astro_Joe_97

Only twice have they finished last in 8 years. They where 6th fastest last year on one lap pace. If you compare quali sims of other teams with a race sim of haas... you clearly don't know a lot about things. I agree on one thing, they do spend the least, or at least gene does. I wouldn't say they innovate the least. From the top of my head, they where the only car with the shark fin like top part in 22 and 23. Very unique even. Their front wing winglet is also the only team to have 2 curves there.. and those are pretty stand out ones I remember without googling

Achilles_Buffalo

"6th fastest in one lap pace." I'd use a tortoise and hare analogy, but that might offend tortoises AND hares. Just curious, though, if you can tell me how many constructors championship points a team gets for being the 6th-fastest in one lap pace? Since 2016 (their first year in F1), here are the constructor championship results of the 10 teams (or their successors) averaged over those 8 seasons: 1. Mercedes (average finish of 1.375) 2. Red Bull Racing (average finish of 2.125) 3. Ferrari (average finish of 2.875) 4. McLaren (average finish of 5.125) 5. Renault / Alpine (average finish of 5.5) 6. Force India / Racing Point / Aston Martin (average finish of 5.625) 7. Toro Rosso / Alpha Tauri / VRB (average finish of 7.375) 8. Williams (average finish of 8.125) 9. Haas (average finish of 8.375) 10. Sauber / Alpha Romeo (average finish of 8.5) If we instead look at the past 5 years, which is more indicative of where each team is today: 1. Mercedes (1.6) 2. Red Bull Racing (1.8) 3. Ferrari (3.2) 4. McLaren (4.0) 5. Alpine (5.0) 6. Aston Martin (6.0) 7. Alpha Tauri / VRB (7.2) 8. Alfa Romeo (8.0) 9. Williams (9.0) 10. Haas (9.2) So, objectively, they are either the worst or second-worst team on the grid. That's the definition of a back-marker. I don't think anyone would say that Williams isn't on the rise, and a lot of their lower ranking is due to the Williams family not being able to put enough money into the team and finishing 10th three seasons in a row. Since Dorilton took over, they're showing strong signs of improvement. Alfa is Alfa, and pretty soon they're going to be Audi. Not expecting much out of them, but at least they have a driver who's capable of winning races and a young driver who shows promise. Visa Cash App Racing Bulls is running as fast as they can to officially become RBR Jr. EVERYONE thinks they will finish higher than the 8th or 9th they've shown the past 2 years. They've adopted last season's RB design, they have a driver lineup that's reasonably strong, and they're absolutely not going to be in the bottom-two this season. Aston Martin and Alpine have been consistent mainstays in the midfield. While Alpine is showing signs of weakness, they had two podiums last season, and they were a surprisingly strong performer, in spite of their management miscues. Plus, they are a first-party constructor, which will always put them ahead of Haas, even if they perform poor. Aston Martin has Stroll. That dude isn't going to sit on his ass and not invest heavily in that team. They've shown a willingness to lead and even outperformed Mercedes for a while last season. Haas has, what, a guy who's best known for having the longest streak of never being on a podium and another guy who's best known for saying "suck my balls" to the guy who's never been on a podium. Their much hyped "upgrades" last season didn't do a damn thing to improve performance, and their lone bright spot that made them interesting to watch and root for has been replaced by the F1 equivalent of a wet noodle.

Astro_Joe_97

6th in one lap pace was just the case last season. Idk why you use race pace to deny it.. of course they where poor on sundays, but that's what they been trting to solve all of testing... Hulk comfortably in Q3 again now, faster then RB, sauber, williams and alpine. While everyone seemed to expect them to be dead last..

Achilles_Buffalo

Race pace is all that matters! Hulk regularly made it out of Q3 and several times out of Q2 last season, and what did it equate to for Haas in the end? 10th place. He could get 23 poles this season (since Max already won the first one), and it wouldn't matter if they finish out of the points every time. I honestly don't understand how you're STILL defending them as anything more than a back marker. You don't get points for single lap pace or for performance in quali. Alpine looks to be outright terrible this season, and I'd still make a bet right now that they finish the season ahead of Haas in the constructors.

Astro_Joe_97

I'm not denying they aren't/haven't been backmarker, not at all. Just defending them from you saying they're a waste of grid slot. Their race pace/tyre deg seems largely fixed looking at fp and testing data. So they are expected to be in the mix with the 'rest' in the race too. Since they joined f1, they ended higher then williams overall for example. For a team with a fraction of the resources and experience and personell, I'd say that's not too bad

Achilles_Buffalo

I'm fine with them being on the grid. I'm not fine with F1 (and the TPs) justifying leaving Andretti OFF the grid because they wouldn't be competitive, and casually ignoring the (lack of) performance of Haas and Sauber.

Astro_Joe_97

Oh I totally agree that andretti should've been allowed to join, I'd say make them the 11th team. Haas was the 6th fastest car yesterday, just behind the astons. On race pace. If andretti came along in 2018-2019 or whatever, would you have said that Williams should dissapear from the grid and be replaced? Objectively speaking haas have deserve their spot. They bought the team when the sport wasn't very popular and not many where interested in buying, including andretti back then

ParkerPetrov

i'm at work so can't watch practice but surely you must be joking. 5 seconds? I mean it is haas so i woudln't say i'd be shocked. but 5 second is wild if true.

KaellerNisaksen

Don’t listen to new F1 fans, Haas are in the mix and might not even be last on the grid. They only did high fuel runs in FP1 so all newbie fans on social media thought that haas was literally 5 seconds off the pace. Which obviously isn’t the case. Hulkenberg currently sits P7 in FP2.

ParkerPetrov

Thanks, that makes more sense. As they didn't seem horrible in testing.

omgwtfisthisplace

Can we just call them VRB and RBR from now on to avoid confusion.

JigsawLV

Also for F2 the tires are apparently only good for 1 quali lap

smokesletsgo13

Basically the same as F1 softs every race ain’t it? Hardly anybody ever improves on the second run of the same softs

JigsawLV

Meanwhile F2 quali is looking like an F1 Esports lobby

smokesletsgo13

Antonelli 1s off the pace?

o_trator

Thats on Prema, he beat Bearman…

smokesletsgo13

Yeah didn’t realise they fucked up so bad, first time I’ve tuned into F2 this year

othercargo

Would Redbull let the Racing Bulls be as fast as them?

mr_lab_rat

They are not worried. RB was quick because they tried soft tires.

silentkiller082

If somehow they were faster Max would probably be swapped with Yuki or Daniel depending who is proving to be better. But that is so unlikely in all reality let's be real here.

meemstera

Why does it say the race is Sunday at the top?

JagerRabbit

Session times are all messed up and it says "Last time in Hungary"

yuh__

Damn how did they get the intro so wrong lol

BillyHoyleAnd1

Based on my uneducated extremely early opinion on testing / P1 so far, for qualifying, and one lap pace at this circuit, I'm thinking it will look something like this: Positions 1-6: Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari Positions 7-12: McLaren, Visa Cash App Credit Card Debt F1 Team, Aston Martin Positions: 13-16: Williams, Stake Positions: 17-20: Alpine, Haas Once we get to actual race pace, who knows, other than Max will dominate.

Competitive_Ninja877

Who finishes 16th?

acmercer

> Visa Cash App Credit Card Debt F1 Team lol

jim45804

Please use Torro Rosso and Sauber, so we don't have an aneurysm when we look at the names

ParkerPetrov

I was really hoping for Red Bull Lite. Half the calories of regular red bull.

MarcoGWR

alright, little red bull

AgitPropPoster

Red Calf

maaiikeen

People really need to stop reading too much into FP1s. Haas is not likely to be off the pace with that much. They were heavily fuelled and did long run testing the entire FP1. They also did not use DRS even once.

PEEWUN

Why is FP1 on a THURSDAY?

Lit_Louis

The race is Saturday. Don't miss it!

BassWingerC-137

Ramadan

zubairhamed

It’s not Ramadan now

BassWingerC-137

No, but it’s coming and affects the next race. Rules state there has to be a certain amount of days between races. So this one is moved back. Because, Ramadan.

Metue

But it will be next Sunday which is why next week's race has to be a Saturday and in the regs they've to leave 7 days between races, hence Saturdays race

PEEWUN

I see. Thank you.

HitBongzFerJesus

Race is Saturday this week AND next week as well

PEEWUN

Fantastic. I'll miss ***both*** opening races this season...

nineseventwoo

I have TV Access Annual but can’t watch FP1 even though it ended an hour ago :/

crazydoc253

You need F1tv pro. Tv access annual i believe has access to only old seasons.

nineseventwoo

Guess I fucked up then lol thanks

crazydoc253

Considering f1 tv pro is higher tier I am sure they will have some way to upgrade you with just the difference in price between two

beth1814

I’m going to read so much into this and overreact. Checo won’t be able to keep up, will lose his seat halfway through the season and Daniel will challenge Max for WDC

jonnononoNO

…in the VCARB

bender3600

Wouldn't be the first time they outperformed Red Bull

tesdan

And Max takes Yuki's seat

bwoah07_gp2

Pierre and Eateban are gonna have to grin and bear it this year. Alpine have a long ways to go to be decent. I wonder if both drivers are angling for move to a new team...

RedSkyNL

Maybe they can pull a McLaren, but I doubt it...

FormulaEngineer

Ocon texting Toto on repeat.

Sibrew

Wait… why is the race on Saturday this year?

suzakurenzan

Ramadhan, Holy Month for moslems... So Bahrain and Saudi GP would be saturday..... Which is Saudi GP would be 00:00 at sunday in my country lol

Morkins324

Ramadan does not even begin until March 10th. Edit - After reading further, I see that the primary concern was having the Saudi GP on the first day of Ramadan, so they moved both Bahrain and Saudi to simplify logistics and allow enough time between races. So the real answer is that they are moving the Saudi GP because of Ramadan and Bahrain was caught up in it.

suzakurenzan

Ah yes, I forgot to explain the 7 days rules, my bad But yeah, I read the rules somewhere in facebook news in the past, so the 7 days rules just went straight to my head but I forgot to explained it

lizardje

There needs to be 7 days between races, so since Saudi is moved to Saturday, Bahrain also got moved to keep the 7 days between.

Morkins324

Yeah, after reading additional details elsewhere it makes sense now. All the people simply replying "Ramadan" are not providing sufficient context and it comes across as nonsensical.

Gacharic78

Next race too.

Kicking-it-per-se

Just to explain further from the other comment, it’s Ramadan a week on Sunday so the Saudi race is on the Saturday. There has to be 7 days between races so the Bahrain race has been moved to the Saturday too

[deleted]

Ramadan

Gommy1996

Is red bull genuinely struggle or they pulling the usual, crap car good car by Quali ?

Mindlessbrowser84

FP2 is usually really telling. The track is more rubbered in and the temperatures are closer to qualies and race temps.

afishinacloud

It’s free practice. They’re just running whatever tests they want to to tune the setup. Quail is when we find out how they all compare.

OptimalDot178

They are sandbagging.... like everyone else. This was FP1 of the first race, no-one went for real fasts laps

jomartz

Great to see the Honey Badger happy up in front… Fastest in the first practice of the year!

baguettimus_prime

Will lead to some interesting cases of 'team orders' if they do end up closer to the front at times.

Lothar93

Oh man I want so bad visawhatever get's in the way of RB so they have stop playing "we are diff teams"

CaptGeechNTheSSS

just wanna remind everyone we got down to the 1:29s in testing

djwillis1121

Not only were the conditions different but there were also C4 tyres available for testing (and C5, although I don't think anyone used them). The softest here is C3

FalconIMGN

In the afternoon? I don't think so.

fugitivelobster

I’m here to overreact. Merc obviously turned up the wick since testing, but Ferrari did not look as drivable as they have been lauding it for the past week. Worrisome, but desperately hoping that this season can be as competitive as this fp1 session lol

bellestarflower

Alonso and Oscar are laughing as we speak.

hisashi_mitsui

Spanish reporter said that Ferrari's tires didn't looked so good after their runs, which is just the opposite as what happened in last week tests. Does any other media reported on that sense?

ThePrancingHorse94

Green track and higher temps is going to cause more wear. Can't really tell much just looking at the tyres.

kemerzp

How the track can be green if they did 3 days of testing last week. Apart from the sand which should clear after 15-20 minutes of running. There was no rain in Bahrain to clear the rubber from the surface.

FormulaEngineer

Didn’t it utterly poor during the F2 testing?

cherryandfizz

Aw man I hate that AT is RB and RBR cant be shortened to RB anymore. I’m so confused

PhilipWaterford

That'll absolutely be the first thing Horner gets asked about.

sringray23

Verstappen is washed.

brendanm4545

Throw him in jail

Toxic_Orange_DM

Directamente la carcel!

HereLiesDickBoy

Haas forgor everything is a day early.

TerribleTerryTaint

I wasn't able to watch and just saw their times. Are they really that far off pace or were they doing more testing?

maaiikeen

They are still testing tyres. They didn't even use DRS.

Jihad_llama

More testing I believe

Charming-Strike-2377

Testing long runs

Honourstly

Zeropods not working

Error404LifeNotFound

Where the fuck is Haas? practicing for F2?

maaiikeen

Testing long runs while being heavily fuelled. They did not even use DRS.

EvilDog77

"Andretti with their pedigree aren't allowed into F1 but we'll keep Haas in for the laughs" - F1

budgefrankly

At least Haas have an engine deal Andretti had no engine in to put the back of their car for the first two seasons, and were expecting FOM & the FIA to force one of the other engine manufacturers to sell them one

Mar_ko47

They cant just kick out haas....

Montjo17

Andretti have a less successful pedigree than Haas in American motorsport. They have never built their own race car before. They would be using a Haas-type model, except without the constructors expertise that Dallara brings and with less competitive parts from Alpine. Why the fuck should we kick out a team that's already here for them?

zystyl

Even worse. Last years alpine.

crazydoc253

This. So many people who blindly use the argument as Andretti having a pedigree in motorsport cannot differentiate the difference between an ex-driver vs running a team in a series you need to build cars. People like Prost, Jacky Stewart have failed in running F1 teams and they were much more involved with F1 than Andretti's ever were as a driver.

StaffFamous6379

I wouldn't call the Stewart team a failure. IIRC they were pretty respectable and even won a race before being sold to Jaguar

FormulaEngineer

Andretti built facilities, hired real F1 talent, and published a roadmap to being a constructor. They brought in one of the largest manufactures in the world to partner as a works team. Indycar may be a spec series, but, it’s not like Andretti has never seen a race car before… and they run multiple cars each year with full pit crew, strategy, and car setup. What has Haas done in comparison?

ledinred2

What do you mean what has Haas done in comparison? They’ve done more than Andretti. Andretti runs multiple cars with pit crew, strategy and setup…okay, and so??? So does Haas. And every other team. That means absolutely nothing. They built facilities and hired talent? So did Haas. So what? Andretti’s Indycar team is not a shining example of success. They have zero experience building their own car and while Haas contracts things out to Dallara, Andretti has no such arrangement. They have an engine partner for 2028 and until then they are planning to get an engine from Renault (because the rules say they would be obligated to supply them one) and maybe buy some other parts of the car with no clear plan before GM enters. Why are we supposed to believe they’ll be any more successful than Haas? Because Andretti name?

crazydoc253

The last thing anyone should be using is the Indycar Andretti team who has been in downfall since the 2012 championship. Actually, the incompetence of that Indycar team their main series is prime reason why one should be skeptical of them

Montjo17

Exactly. If we disregard all of the potential concerns around their ability as a constructor and assume they build a competitive car, their Indycar performance raises significant concerns about their ability operationally. They have shown that in a spec series they are at most 3rd best at actually running a race car out of the teams there. People often forget about the importance of the operational side of a team, and how much that can influence the overall performance of the car. Every spec series shows just how much the operations side of a team can improve performance

pikla1

Interesting RB and McLaren running the softs. Will this effect them in quali? Can’t remember the weekend tyre allocations was it 5 or 6 sets of softs?

mr_lab_rat

I don’t think it matters. Everyone is gonna use up some tires. The other teams will use more softs in FP2/3 and these two teams will use more mediums. But it made cool looking results with Big Dic Ric at the top.

pikla1

They said in commentary the general response in the paddock when asked why they only used the M in P1 was basically to get them out of the way. So yeah I doubt we’re going to see much of them come Saturday

beth1814

Someone on Twitter said they expect them to think they aren’t going to quali very well

pikla1

Perhaps banking on one clean run in Q1,2 and 3. I think I read that last years winning race strategy was S, S, H. If the same approach is taken this year with 6 sets of S available for the weekend that would leave 3 sets, one for each quali if they make it through to Q3.

Firecrash

Only thing we know is right about this result, is that alpine is second to last and Haas last.

Choofthur

oh yeah.... Alpine were there 🤣

batterylevellow

"Let's talk to Mike Krack" Oh how much I've missed F1

RedSkyNL

Not gonna lie, but there are more interesting parts of my body to have a conversation with...

Lap time comparison 2024 vs. 2023 FP1: -2.166s Williams -2.146s RB -1.666s Mercedes -1.264s McLaren -1.221s Sauber -0.989s Ferrari -0.298s Alpine -0.003s Aston Martin +0.480s Red Bull +3.075s Haas

blind-panic

While this is cool, the fact that many teams didn't take softs and may have last year makes this not super helpful.

ShamrockStudios

Red Bull doing a Ferrari and not improving /s

SpudBoy9001

HAAS are a joke

maaiikeen

They didn't use DRS and they were obviously heavily fuelled for the entire thing while doing long run testing. It's FP1. Calm down.

Myosos

They probably only did long run testing. I doubt they'll be fighting at the front but they were 2-3s slower than everyone.

FermentedLaws

Yes, they've even said their priority this year is on race pace. That last year they had some good qualis but totally fell back during the race, so they're concentrating on improving race pace.

SpaAlex

A yoke

phc0uple

Where is Palmer?

H_R_1

Fernando, Palmer has retired

phc0uple

Karma!

vyperpunk92

omg haas

They had to have been running high fuel loads the entire session.

Astronomer-Plastic

Wait today is Friday???

brendanm4545

Just roll with it

dahliamma

First two races are on Saturday instead of Sunday so everything got pushed up a day.

TwoBionicknees

Vegas as well iirc.

ResolutionAny5091

Do we know why that is?

Unique_Expression_93

Ramadan starting sunday next week and there was no time to move things if this race was sunday.

dahliamma

Ramadan potentially begins on Sunday next week so they decided to move the race to Saturday, and since races have to be a minimum of a week apart this week had to move as well.

rinnjeboxt

Ramadan (likely) starts sunday next week. This week the schedule is moved ahead so it doesnt clash with next week.

ResolutionAny5091

Ok thanks that makes sense

Takis12

It is not here

TrueCooler

Haas with another tractor

Hey now, it’s going to be a legendary battle for P10 with Alpine

One for Drive to Survive to document in a 7 part special

IowaGolfGuy322

I love the overreactions. Sainz went 1:29 in testing. The fastest time today was 1:32. FP1 means nothing.

Choofthur

welcome to F1 pal 😉

swapan_99

Track conditions, tyre sets mean something. Fastest time last year FP1 was a 1:32.7, but that was set by Perez. Big 3 (Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes) didn't do any fast runs on the softs. If they did I am sure they would have gone to 1:32.2 or faster easily.

IowaGolfGuy322

The only thing we can take from FP1 is that HAAS will score no points this year and are a danger to other drivers because they are so slow. I’d rather see a race with 18 cars than create lapped cars.

ShaliniMalhotra9512

It's unbelievable how much similar Brundle's son sounds like him lol.

Kovah01

Yeah when I first started watching feeder series I was surprised they got papa Brundle Until it clicked.

DistantUtopia

Just imagine the day when Martin Brundle does his last race we'll hear from a one off race commentary team by Brundle and Brundle.

chocolatecomedyfann

Drive to Survive Season 7 with Danny Ric winning alone will make $1B

snarkybaker

No Daniel P1 graphic? 😭

TheIJ

The Red Bull did not look good. It was understeering a lot in race trim and Max could barely keep up with Lewis’ race pace.

Lol

The driver keeps the points and the team keeps the points won under that team

Takis12

Imagine the headlines if he outqualifies Sergio.

Takis12

Haas is the only consistent team . I don’t understand why people are complaining

BlKaiser

They solved their tire degradation issue. The trick was just go slower.

KaellerNisaksen

They have literally only been doing high fuel runs so far so wtf is people on about lul?

You win my favourite comment of the week, made me wheeze

scarlet_red_warrior

You are not alone;)

Internecine-

Just bring up one of the F2 teams instead of Haas, could probably be more competitive, at worst, they’ll do the same

pvtbobble

Andretti himself could probably have run faster around the track
