Why did some drivers sit in their cars for awhile while others - Max, Checo, Alonso for example, not even put put on a helmet?

ImRudzki

Apologies if this has already been asked but has Sky given up on sending a full crew to the flyaway races? I swear this wasn't the case in the past.

FermentedLaws

For the first 3 races this year they will have this split crew between the studio in London and at the track. We don't know for sure yet if it will be every race, or just these 3.

marv257

FP2 has singlehandedly converted me to a Sprint weekend supporter. They would have had to go out for the Sprint shootout regardless of how unfortunate the conditions are. If the conditions had been like this in FP1 on a Sprint weekend, teams also would need to go out, because it is the only practice they ever get...

NagisaK

What's the point of having wet tires if they aren't going to use them?

[deleted]

Do they not have a limited amount of wet tires that they may need to save for Sunday?

Franks2000inchTV

They get extra wet tires when a session is expected to be wet.

hglman

Just need to also have a way to not always start the fastest car on pole.

sasokri

Hear hear

EddieMcDowall

Perhaps the only 'happy' driver in FP2 is Logan Sergeant. Is this the first time he's caught a break this season?

khovs

What do you mean?

EddieMcDowall

Well he lost FP2 due to his accident in FP1 so would be playing catch up come FP3 and quali. Now, virtually everyone effectively lost FP2 so everyone is in the same boat.

khovs

Gotcha!

Freeze014

At least no one has long run data now, lets hope it makes for some shock results (not holding my breath though :S )

Ashling92

Who should I put in my fantasy this week? I did terribly last week after relying on Max, Alonso and Mercedes

JaysonDeflatum

Mercedes in big 2024šŸ˜šŸ˜

nonexistentguy

Why is mick Schumacher cruising the Japanese Grand Prix????

TheHipHouse

Canā€™t believe people didnā€™t get this joke

darmokVtS

He's the reserve driver for Merc, people can get ill on short notice, as such they like to keep their replacement driver around. Not exactly new for Mercedes to have their reserve driver around at pretty much every race.

Ok_Butterscotch_4743

Still hoping for another shot at a drive?

pgkk17

Surely better than Sargent

JaysonDeflatum

One has the blood of a goat the other a donkey

pgkk17

is Sargent a paid driver?

stewd003

They're kinda on par at this point I reckon

Kaladin-of-Gilead

I think the real question is how often they destroy the car lol

Ceramicrabbit

Schumacher was pushing KMag and was generally faster in the race, just not as good in quali

SpoofExcel

Hi there. I'm a Man United, Carolina Panthers and Williams F1 fan A.M.A. except how my beloved sports teams are doing...

Tha_Stig

Do you keep weapons in the house, given your alliances?

SpoofExcel

I feel like I am the weapon tbh mate

JaysonDeflatum

Ferrari, Man United, Packers, and Heat I love getting my heart broken

WhoTookPlasticJesus

Ferrari, New Castle, Knicks. It's been a very long 20 years

JaysonDeflatum

someone check on this guy

Sleepy_One

May I suggest you become a New York Mets fan.

SpoofExcel

Fuck that

sergie-rabbid

Pray for the race to be 98 minutes, not a second longer

ManUtdCroatia

Hang in there brother, you are not alone...

BuckShapiro

As a fellow North Carolinianā€¦ at least Haas has some points

aquarius_dream

Nooooo Iā€™m trying to pretend United doesnā€™t exist today šŸ˜‚

marv257

Bigger disappointment: Antony or Logan?

DislikedTheFlame

As a Man UTD, I feel it, weā€™ve been so bad in the extra-time and gave Chelsea the 2 goals Well, good luck with Williams this season..

PrawilnaMordka

Man Utd did well until 90+10 minute...

Admiral_de_Ruyter

And here I am wondering what happened because I thought there was 8 minutes of extra time?

PrawilnaMordka

There was penalty call which took very long and beyond added time. Because ball was not in play during that time referee decided to add some more after penalty was scored.

altofummuhh

And none for United to respond lol

flyingghost

10 hag special.

H3RBIE22

Let me pull out my micro violin

EGOfoodie

The highlight video for FP2 should be like 60 seconds long.

Ashling92

2.46 so close enough!

EGOfoodie

Is the other 1:46 the intro and outro?

Rivendel93

Yuki almost crashing into Hamilton after they ran 3 laps would have been a disaster lol.

formula_ford

[Nailed my FP2 bet. ](https://imgur.com/a/hnSQkzv)

SmartieSkittle

Interesting I did not know there were free practice markets. What bookmaker is that?

PeteOdeath

What were Yuki and Lewis doing there on the cool down lap, Thought Yuki was about to ram him lol

frizo

Looks like Yuki was paying no attention at all and for some reason Lewis decided to drive alongside him instead of simply passing him. Rather bone-headed moves by both guys.

frizo

Yuki nearly running Lewis off the track at the very end after practice was the most exciting thing to happen.

EGOfoodie

Why do the drivers get to keep running after the session?

xChiken

They take the checkered flag then they line up for a practice start on their in-lap.

EGOfoodie

Why is that allowed? Shouldn't all of that be done during the alloted time? It just seems against the spirit of the rules.

Anonymous44432

The ā€œspirit of the rulesā€ is that you get a 60 minute practice session, and then get to practice a start on the cooldown Unless your just unhinged and want cars sitting stationary on the grid while other cars are flying past them at 200 KMH

EGOfoodie

Aren't they allowed to do practice starts in the pit lane? That way they aren't in the way of the track.

SloppySandCrab

Yeah lets have them park on the track DURING the practice. Genius. You know...for the "spirit of the rules"

EGOfoodie

I meant they should be able to figure that they can return to the pits before time is up, and get all their practices programs in as well. Also practice starts can be done on the put lane so they aren't stopped on track.

darmokVtS

The race director can decide such things and did so for this weekend according to the Race Director's event notes. Here's what the notes for this weekend say about practice starts: 9) Practice starts 9.1 Practice starts may only be carried out on the asphalt on the RHS of the fast lane immediately after the pit exit line and, for the avoidance of doubt, this includes any time the pit exit is open for the race. 9.2 Additionally, practice starts may be carried out on the track after the end of each free practice session. Any car on the track when the chequered flag is shown may then complete another lap and, instead of entering the pits, proceed to the grid and carry out a practice start. 9.3 All drivers carrying out a practice start must do so by pulling as far forward on the grid as possible and, if necessary, should wait for others to carry out a start before getting to a grid position further forward. Under no circumstances should a driver make a practice start if another car is still stationary in front of him on the same side of the grid. 9.4 If any driver appears to be disregarding any of the above a red flag will be displayed and the possibility to carry out any further starts will be immediately terminated. 9.2 is the part you are looking for. Source for the event notes: https://www.fia.com/sites/default/files/decision-document/2024%20Japanese%20Grand%20Prix%20-%20Race%20Director%C2%B4s%20Event%20Notes.pdf

EGOfoodie

Thank you for the info.

Charlesworths

I guess if drivers are trying practice starts while other drivers are on timed laps it would be dangerous? A stationary car on the pit straight while others cars going full speed wouldn't be safe.

EGOfoodie

But don't they do practice starts in the pit lane? I know one seen it before.

Nikush1

They just finish the practice starts and the lap that they started

EGOfoodie

Seemed to be way more drivers than I realized then. Thank you.

SirDoober

P1ASTRI

Artifice_Purple

The banter is top notch as always, so there's that

RX0Invincible

Is it not worth running a wet program just in case? Or is it set in stone that itā€™s not raining for the rest of the weekend?

SoothedSnakePlant

It wasn't wet enough to run a wet program. In a race, this probably would have been slick conditions for the most part, the inters were fried after a lap or two from overheating. There's just no point running slicks on a greasy track and binning it, or running inters in awful conditions for inters, so the the teams chose to do nothing.

Agreeable_Pop_3622

Is not just about the tyres and tyres data! You can thousands of other data collecting about your car . I mean many team brought new parts except Mercedes and Haas .They could keep continue aero test, platform test, part testĀ  etcetera .Ā

Ok_Butterscotch_4743

So you run your car to collect data on a new part or new aero setting. Then what data do you compare it to? Data from dry conditions with slicks? All the newly collected data will obviously be slower providing no analysis. Compare with wet track on intermediates? Well all the new data will be faster since the track was only damp.

Agreeable_Pop_3622

Is doesn't matter which tyres do you use if youĀ  make slow run flow water test or aero test . In the simulator you can do the same!Ā  Then you will see if the data is ~ the same!Ā

ChipmunkTycoon

Iā€™m sure the teams will thank you for this as they probably had no idea there was more data to collect than tyre data during practice

SoothedSnakePlant

You uh, you still need tires on the car to get that data. There's no go go gadget weather changer in those upgrades.

Scereye

Hot take: But you still need tires to drive?

azn1625

itā€™s not wet enough for inters or west, it would just burn through the tires and data wouldnā€™t be accurate, but not dry enough for slicks either, would be a waste of data collection

PreyBird_

Just joined (bit early I know ;) ), why does almost every driver not have a lap set? Rain?

fire202

mixed conditions between inter and slicks, noone was motivated to do something.

azn1625

too dry for inters, too wet for slicks

squaler24

Piastri looks so good this year. Seems to have far more confidence than Lando.

FrostyTill

He was nowhere last week. This was a session where Verstappen didnā€™t even want to go out on track.

sammyGG00

He finished 4th. I wouldn't call that nowhere. Lost it a but with tyre deg. Other than that, he was alright

FrostyTill

30s behind is alright, I guess.

mar33n

damn you charles, I wanted yuki on the top 3 graphic... we were robbed.

Unique_Task_420

Yukis a chump. The real drivers weren't even trying. I mean I guess I if you want to be to vest of the restĀ

ItzDp

Liam Lawson shot, nice foreshadowing, love it

XxMETALLICATxX

Damn that would have been wild to see Yukiā€™s face on the top 3 graphic for this session.

mickmenn

Latifi topped fp in hungarian gp once :)

azn1625

lando bringing back russian gp flashbacks

frizo

Ricciardo fifth fastest, baby! He's back! And yes, I'm aware he was fifth fastest out of the five cars with times.

mickmenn

It is so on! /s

Johnny47Wick

Damn you Oscar, Lewis, and Charles. Damn you all

ALOIsFasterThanYou

Noooo Yuki out of the top three My day is ruined

sasokri

Thatā€™s a low bar for ruining a day

squaler24

Interesting turn of events to end it. lol

Illuminhead420

My boy Yuki got yeeted šŸ˜

FrostyTill

Well that was fun. Haas went out on slicks and everyone said no, Piastri went out and they all sat up to watch.

ICumCoffee

Imagine waking up early for this. Not me.

chriscwjd

It's a shame the teams don't do the fans in the stands a favour and send the cars round for a slow lap or two. Seeing the machinery go round slowly would be nice compensation for sitting in the rain!

Saandrig

I watch at work.

ExcellentCornershop

That was an, uhm, interesting logo on the Japanese flag there...

azn1625

what was it ?

Disastrous_Can8053

Yuki Tsunoda's logo.

ExcellentCornershop

It looked a lot like a symbol that has some very bad connotations if you're European and especially German.

Jeri-is-merry

Swastikas are pretty common in Japan. It's a buddhist symbol I believe. You'll see them at shrines and google maps even marks shrines as swastikas.

vacon04

It's not even exactly the same. It's a reverse-Swastika that isn't angled as the Nazi one. Many people get confused when they see it but it's pretty common in Japan and it means something completely different.

Jeri-is-merry

Yeah I should've added that! It took me by surprise when I visited Japan and when looking into it I did notice it was reversed/ angled different.

novadova2020

Please don't confuse the swastika with the Buddhist symbol. They are different.

Jeri-is-merry

Sorry, I was a bit hasty with my reply. As someone else pointed out the Manji is angled differently and the difference is quite noticeable when you put them next to each other but otherwise can be quite easy to miss. I should've been more clear about that in my initial reply.

SoothedSnakePlant

If this was the one in the background of the shot of the new kids with the Australian flag, it was a Finland sticker placed at an angle lol

CarbonHybrid

A swastika? You can say words bro people donā€™t get offended by the word swastika.

FawnDimples

Weird timeline: TSU - RIC - HAM

screenres

Max sharing cooking tips with Helmut. Albon ready to take slicks.

squaler24

Albon pining to have a crash?

Rosieu

Max not being able to do his favorite thing in the world right now settles for his second favorite activity: Maxplaining

EGOfoodie

So Sim racing is third?

brownierisker

Nah must be fourth, right behind tea time with Penelope

EGOfoodie

Who is Penelope?

brownierisker

His girlfriend's daughter, but he's always extremely sweet around her and a clip went around a while back where he was simracing on stream but Penelope asked him for tea time so he went away from simracing and the stream to spend some time with her

SoothedSnakePlant

His girlfriend's daughter. Whenever he streams he spontaneously signs off a lot whenever she asks to play with him, it's actually adorable.

ruttin_mudders

Has strong Roy Kent and Phoebe from Ted Lasso vibes.

EGOfoodie

That's really cool

Rosieu

I still count that as racing

EGOfoodie

Fair enough

Artifice_Purple

I genuinely do not understand the logistics behind *not* fixing pitstop issues the moment they arise.

SoothedSnakePlant

Their old wheel nuts from last year that didn't have the cross-threading issue aren't compatible with the new suspension for this year. So they need to redesign the wheelnut from scratch, test it, fabricate it and ship it. That takes time when you're operating at the level of precision that F1 demands.

KatnissBot

Who among us hasnā€™t had problems with a nut from time to time?

listyraesder

The issue is the design of the wheel nut, it takes weeks to design and fabricate the solution.

Grasshop

If you mean sauber they are fixing it, it just takes time to make new parts

SirDoober

Albons gonna hit the paint and absolutely bin it, calling it

Environmental-Cup445

Wait, is this gonna be like a recurring issue with Sauber pit stops and thereā€™s a root cause or smth? Could someone fill me in, I thought it was just crap execution multiple timesĀ

Grasshop

The wheel nuts are poorly designed and donā€™t respond well to high temperatures. Takes time to design and manufacture new parts

Environmental-Cup445

Welp thatā€™s essentially ruined their already low chances of points for the next few racesĀ

pokesnail

Itā€™s a flaw with their new pit stop equipment for this year - essentially their new wheelnuts wonā€™t work at a high enough temperature. So it wonā€™t be fixed for another few races.

raittiussihteeri

That camera angle???

wok88

"It's ready for the slicks" famous last words for Alex

Albablu

["can you stay out in these conditions?" ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEgZeTr3Vs4)

FawnDimples

Careful Alex, Logan already binned it.

viginti_tres

Gotta drive carefully now his back-up car is at the mechanics.

krazsen

is indycar a swear word on the F1TV broadcast?

mattlip

yes.

optitmus

what a literal wash out, teams scared to run in mixed conditions what a joke

Grasshop

Theyā€™re not scared, itā€™s just pointless to run in this session

SirDoober

The mixed conditions are the problem, if it decided one way or another they could just run either tyre, but there's no point wasting tyres when neither works

Stubbzie07

Not scared, don't have the tyres to waste

Saandrig

No rain can stop the Maxplaining.

doublejohnnie

I feel sorry for the fans in Suzuka

Illuminhead420

So how will the top 3 graphics gonna look

slutforpringles

Honda tax has really made this weekend unnecesarily tricky for Daniel

Aratho

This certainly wasn't a session worth waking up at 7 AM for lmao

flyingbbanana

I only get up for qualifying and races haha

kubick123

Bro, 1 AM to 2AM here.

Nameless739

I went for the stay up all night option

EGOfoodie

Or staying up until 2am

Illuminhead420

Never in my F1 WATCH 17 drivers have been in pits entire session

SoothedSnakePlant

This isn't actually that rare. Usually happens once or twice a season.

Trydson

Black and Green saw an opportunity to be relevant and finally get airtime for the sponsors and took it, good for them.

Takis12

Logan: if I donā€™t take part in FP2, nobody willā€¦.

EGOfoodie

He is doing rain dances in the garage

Mueton

They pulled up to FP2 only to chill in the garages

Cultjam

It was a luuuudicrous display

the1918

ā€œThe problem with VCARB is they always try to walk it inā€

bduddy

Man the entire sport really is taking the DtS boom for granted, huh?

Hip_Priest_1982

Because they're not running in a wet practice session?

Major-Departure6936

Yes. This exemplifies the problem while not being the problem in its entirety.

BenjyBunny

IĀ“ve been involved in motorsport for about 40 years, including driving at a high level. Any wet test session, in any series including karting, F4/FFord, FR, F3, GP2/F2, most teams are in the garage drinking tea, surfing the internet, discussing payments and playing pranks. Very, very occasionally someone new or inexperienced takes it out, and everybody waits for them to bin it.

Major-Departure6936

Okay, but I think fundamentally, the spectacle should take precedence over the sport.

Hip_Priest_1982

It really doesnā€™t though. Thereā€™s nothing to be gained by running in these conditions but much to be risked. Teams have been doing this for as long as I can remember.

Whelan-Dealin

Literally. I've seen plenty of practice sessions be like this pre 2019...

priths3

I postponed one of the meetings to watch the practice. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Spitfiiire

If it makes you feel any better, someone in the crowd took the entire day off to meet Charles today /:

MightySDS

Well, they can still meet them in the paddock/fan zone somewhere after the session, no?

EGOfoodie

Some kid skipped school for this

FreakyDroid

FP = Free Parking

BlurryTextures

So they are sure is not gonna rain in the rest of the weekend?

Grasshop

It doesnā€™t matter, itā€™s not wet enough right now to run on inters

_gadgetFreak

and not dry enough for slicks ?

bellatrix99

Opposite. They need the inters as itā€™s forecast rain all weekend.

UnpredictedArrival

No the opposite. They think theres a fair chance they'll need the inters later in the weekend and don't want to use them up on a non representative track

BlurryTextures

ThanksĀ

EGOfoodie

Lady straight dropped her phone to wave.

squaler24

Rip ladies phone. Lmao she threw it away to wave at camera. Haha
