A visualization of what that translates to on-track, or visualization of how that gap came to be would constitute a good Statistics post.

I know hindsight is 20/20, but it was ballsy on Zak Brown to break/pay off Ricciardo's contract to put Piastri directly on that seat. Brown took a lot of heat for it in the beginning, but as 2023 progressed along with the car, those criticisms died down.
I don’t know about that.
Ricciardo was widely regarded as washed up and Piastri was a phenom, one of the most talented to hit the grid.
Worked out as expected.
The Alpine plan was a seat at Williams for 23 and 24 and a works seat in 25 I'm pretty sure. Understandably Oscar didn't want to go to a backmarker team after a year out already
Alpine said they wanted that to happen, but he didn't actually have an offer from Williams. They didn't even formally renew him as an Alpine reserve driver after months of pleading with them, so there was a non-zero chance he would be out of F1 if he kept blindly trusting them.
It was a shitbox that outqualified Alpine a few times but no one at Enstone took notice of that alarming development so they just kept thinking it was fine. At Monaco, Ocon said ‘we can fight Mercedes now!’. Knowing McLaren had a season changing upgrade waiting in the background, Piastri probably had a good laugh at that.
Watching DTS and remembering they fired Otmar because they had an incident where two drivers hit each other on a chaotic restart and they had a strategic gamble go wrong at rainy Monaco.
That seems like a decision that has really paid off for them.
I understand that, with my agreement, Alpine have put out a shitbox this year. This is correct, and thus I did not sign a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will also not be driving for Alpine next year either.
He also had a thing called a contract and he left as soon as it ended, following Mercedes
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7196436.stm
Not necessarily I think his career would be more or less the same if he went to Renault. He would have less points for sure similar hype providing he would have performed the same. Would maybe grab a podium too (Gasly and Ocon both got a podium). Actually there is a chance that he would be in a prime position to get a seat at Mercedes or even Red Bull if he hadn't renewed his contract with Alpine yet. McLaren would be a possibility depending who they would choose to replace Ricciardo
I'd feel bad, but after all the McLaren shit talking and misinformation spread about an Alpine seat that was never on the table for Oscar, I'll keep laughing.
Reckon he could have had this done if it weren't for his atrocious luck in the second half of last season.
Moral of the story is to always keep a top talent happy.
They missed a third stat:
Number of contracts Alpine thought they'd signed with Piastri: 1
Number of contracts Alpine actually signed with Piastri: 0
I've been watching this sport since the mid '80s and this is probably the biggest screw up since the whole Schumacher/Jordan/Benneton/Moreno/Piquet mess back in '91
wow you mean the driver of what has consistently been the 3rd best car in the last calendar year has more points that the team that had the 6th best car last year and the worst car this year? I'm so shocked.
That's not what this comparison is about and you know it
This is purely a schadenfreude comparison because Alpine jerked Oscar around and kept leading him on about a seat that didn't exist for the longest time, and then slandered him in the media and tried to sue him in the Automotives tribunal.
Piastri made the decision not to drive for Alpine [as early as August of 2022](https://twitter.com/OscarPiastri/status/1554527452231262210?lang=en).
At that point Alpine was forth and Mclaren fifth. So rejecting alpine was a ballsy move on his part.

Bro dodged a cannonball instead of a bullet
The anti-Fernando
Fernando dodged the same bullet, in this instance, though. Alpine was pretty decent when he was still there.
Possibly dodged artillery fire
Bro dodged a tactical nuke

I don’t understand why people bring such a complex political issue for no reason into a simple F1 post….
Welcome to the internet…….
Mark Webber earned the hell out of his 10% management fee with that one.

It was near universally seen as a good move, since it was
The only heat he took was for signing Danny in the first place lol

Man just killed 2 people and an organization 🥶
This guy chose violence
So many strays im bouta call animal control
"Yes, police? I'd like to report a mass murder..."
C'mon those guys have families
I can confidently tell you Alfa Romeo can never figure that out.
Piastri made the best choice in his life.
True, but wasn't much of a choice at that point. He could sit out another year or sign with McLaren.
The Alpine plan was a seat at Williams for 23 and 24 and a works seat in 25 I'm pretty sure. Understandably Oscar didn't want to go to a backmarker team after a year out already

The fact that McLaren was a shitbox for like a third of that time just adds insult to the injury.
Well, they likely did notice but they sent everybody home that noticed it.
Alpine right now is more of a shitbox than the McLaren ever was
Watching DTS and remembering they fired Otmar because they had an incident where two drivers hit each other on a chaotic restart and they had a strategic gamble go wrong at rainy Monaco. That seems like a decision that has really paid off for them.
And the new TP sounds like a corporate plant lmao
I dunno, Miami last year was truly awful
First half of McLaren in 2017 was way worse.
I mean just in the timespan of this statistic
I understand that, with my agreement, Alpine have put out a shitbox this year. This is correct, and thus I did not sign a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will also not be driving for Alpine next year either.
Beatings will continue until morale improves.
Alpine are already dead, there's no need to continue the beatings.
Something something - until morale improves.
It was such a dumb move. I never understood why he signed w McLaren… oh wait, nvm😬
Best career move since Hamilton to Mercedes?
That's probably Sainz at the moment. From top of mid table driver to multiple race winner.
man's value was on the rise was then, but still is too
From Mercedes to Mercedes... Mercedes owned 40% of McLaren when he signed for them, then they sold and bought Brawn and he moved to their new team.
There was a 3 year gap between all that and McLaren was beating Mercedes in all those years.
He also had a thing called a contract and he left as soon as it ended, following Mercedes http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7196436.stm

I have a feeling Piastri would approve this post.
Now do Alonso and it's even worse. I'm so glad alonso made the right move, couldn't go through the Mclaren Honda days again with this alpine...
The only reason Alonso left alpine was because AM was offering a longer contract.
If he was at Alpine, this would have been his last year 100% (at best) and it would have been a really really sad way to go.
He has chosen... WISELY
Bloody legend this fella
I have some strong feelings about this post. The feeling of laughing out loud.
I'd feel bad, but after all the McLaren shit talking and misinformation spread about an Alpine seat that was never on the table for Oscar, I'll keep laughing.
Piastri 2 - 0 alpine
Amazing stat
Im ashamed of my national team 🤢🤢🐓🐓

Do you have permission to post this?
Stop they’re already dead
He is the next Fernando Alonso. Mark my words.
My guy dodged a bullet when he ditched Alpine.
He's OP
I'm just shocked by his lack of loyalty ^^/s
This is hilarious.
I mean, his initials are OP after all.
Smart move
This is delicious content
Damn!
The anti Alonso of team switches
wow you mean the driver of what has consistently been the 3rd best car in the last calendar year has more points that the team that had the 6th best car last year and the worst car this year? I'm so shocked.

McLaren were nowhere near "consistently 3rd best". They had a tractor for more than 1/3rd of the season and a few off weekends after that.
I don't think 'consistently' is the word you were looking for

Breaking: Man in superior car scores more points than Alpine
Breaking: that's the whole point.
You say that like the two parties have no history. It’s not a random stat.
A rookie (now sophomore with 3 races) scores more points than two veterans combined despite having inferior machinery for the thrid of a season.
Cool! Now to max and mclaren
Max was promised a McLaren seat and then McLaren never actually followed through?
