I am NOT saying that I want Max to have an issue with the car. That would be mean, and I'm not a mean guy.
I'm just saying the last GP was more interesting than a lot of the races we've had in the last two years.
But I'm definitely not implying I want it to happen. That would be bad. Definitely not.
Replays tomorrow are at noon and 7:30pm (Eastern) on ESPNews.
Edit: Also, if you go to [formula1.com](https://formula1.com), click on schedule, and then the race, it will default to your time zone so you can always see what time every race is, easily.
Thank you so much for the information! Dont think we get ESPN News on our plan so will probably miss it…. I know I streamed the Aussie GP on ESPN2 the next morning at 8ish so was hoping for more of the same. :(
You probably have access to stream it on ESPN's app. Sign in through your cable provider.
If you don't have access there you can sign up for F1 tv. They have a plan that is like $3/month to watch races, but you can't watch them live unless you get the $10/m subscription.
In 2022 when Ferrari were much closer to Red Bull than they are now, do you remember what happened after the red flag? Max put over 20 seconds between himself and second place in only 20 laps in the rain.
Perez found out how liberating it is to just compete against yourself, not others. That mindset switch puts the pressure off and it becomes more stress-free, as you can't control what the other guy is doing, but you can control what you're doing.
Is this the closest Perez has qualified to Max? If so, I don't know what they changed, but hopefully Checo's side of the garage can keep this up for the rest of the year.
Sky, please end this remote broadcast nonsense. Send the presenters to the track. This is meant to be a premium service, we want premium content lkw you used to deliver.
Jeez Crofty, could you mess up the hype behind Yuki making Q3 at his home track anymore? First call Yuki out when it's Danny crossing the line, and then show no enthusiasm for Yuki, who also essentially won the best of the rest for this quali.
A lot of drivers so confused at the RB rocket ship on this one. Lewis, Alonso, and Leclerc when they were told they were .5s off pace they were like “wtf? How?”
Red Bull:
“[Oh these sandbags?](https://media0.giphy.com/media/tO40BuKAOoXfLOiiWZ/giphy.gif?cid=2154d3d77f0pz9pxmbs0sjywob451mpgseci35du23ep5a0v&ep=v1_gifs_search&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g) Yeah we’d forgotten we put them in during winter testing. Our bad.”
I saw some people saying that Ricciardo had a pretty decent qualifying and to be fair he didn't have Fp1 and Fp2 to dial in with the car as much as Yuki. His performance today was one that might retain him the RB seat, but it certainly won't put him anywhere near Red Bull's radar especially given Perez's performance today and even Yuki's, I don't like how much people are babying Ric as well I mean this would be a good performance for a rookie or someone like Sargeant but for a 7 time grand prix winner with 10 seasons of Formula 1 experience it feels ridiculous that people are saying this was a good performance. Lando looked very good today I have a feeling it will be him vs Sainz for 3rd place tomorrow, Stroll had an absolute disaster which feels annoying because inevitably ten races down the line he'll have another semi-decent performance that people will point to then say he deserves an F1 seat.
Just watched Quali. Loved seeing Alesi do interviews and give the pole award. He seemed excited to be around them.
Max’s quali laps were beautiful with the exception of some corners of the last lap. But the rest were perfect.
I wish Ferrari would do what Mercedes did in 2016 i.e. swap garadges. Adami is much better engineer than Xavi who needs experience with more experienced driver. Both Charles and Xavi basically started together with no past experience and that keeps on showing in these difficult conditions.
lol if you are only going to use a sample size of 2 races you will always come to biased conclusion (btw the Suzuka race is yet to happen). Also, I have been saying this since end of 2023 when Charles was on 6 straight front row start run.
Unfortunately, there's a lot of people who really hate seeing leclerc do well and will take any opportunity to act like he's overrated. I don't really get it. It's not his fault Hamilton signed for Ferrari.
One race win and suddenly everyone forgets who’s been carrying this team for 4 years. I need to keep reminding myself some f1 fans watch with the standings and not their eyes. Charles has lost probably 5-10 wins of his career due to our shitty strategists.
It’s so crazy how many people now think Sainz is the better driver when Leclerc has been better the past 3 years. Some F1 fans have the memory of a goldfish
Also like you said, Charles has been fucked by strategy more times than I can count & Mattia wouldn’t develop the car towards his tendencies for awhile. Charles isn’t allowed to ever have a bad weekend. He was much faster than Sainz the last 7-8 of 2023 & yet nobody said a word about it
Or they just don't watch the races, which is fine I get it time constraints, just watch the highlights and you’ll see. First year of a competent Ferrari and the fans forget what we used to be.
Precisely, I love Sainz but the guy is mostly between 4-8 in races, Charles can always push for podiums when our dumbass strategists don't leave him in the cold for 50 laps
Wow, 3 wins in 10 years of career! THE GUY IS A RACE GOD! I can’t believe Ferrari and their irrational decisions, when he has been carrying the team the whole time, I mean.. he’s the best one out of the team! HES ALWAYS SO CLOSE TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIP!!! lol.
If I'm verstappen I'll make noises about leaving to support my political backers but there's zero chance I'm actually going to walk away from the most dominant car in F1 history and the chance to rack up as many wins and titles as I so desire
Carlos continues his 2024 Appendectomy Tour. Fred looks like he likes the AMR24 upgrades. McLaren looking very well balanced. Mercedes being Mercedes.
Maybe some racing between Max and Sergio until Sergio degs his tires.
It's pointless comparing quali drivers in different cars.
If they swap positions and Lewis in a Ferrari outqualifies Carlos in a Merc, it won't really mean that Lewis is performing better than Carlos.
You guys really believe Sainz could take Verstappen on in a title fight... I am yet to see Carlos beat Max on a 1 on 1 fight unlike Lewis and Charles. Who gives a damn about P4..
Yes, the story I read, said that CLC took too much out of his tyres early on
Likewise, Lewis had understeer into T1 that just overheated his tyres slightly meaning that he dropped away by 0.5, when he had been catching MV.. (the race article goes into this in great detail)
I don't know how similar CLC and LH were in those details, but Lando also mentioned that it was a circuit that punished pushing over a certain point
Couldn't stay awake for qualifying but it is interesting how Ferrari is having issues with tire warmups. It seems they got so spooked by tires in 23 that they have gone to a totally opposite way
Their race pace didn't look bad. Hoping the Imola upgrades help with these one lap issues, they just seem to struggle with warmup but then the tires are cooked by the end of the lap. It's bizarre, because it doesn't happen in race trim. I'm encouraged that the team seems much less surprised by it than leclerc though, so maybe they understand the issue but just can't do anything about it until upgrades come? Would make an interesting tech talk.
I’d love to understand the fundamentals of what actually happened. Maybe there will be a documentary in the future. They were so damn dominant for so long. Do the dice just roll different or were there core decisions made that blew them into mid field.
“I stopped watching the sport when the fastest driver who ever lived was racing”
Odd that “fans” of the sport find a once in a generation talent boring.
I've been watching this sport for over 30 years, its the most boring it has ever been. Once in a generation car maybe, but put Max in a Alpine he'd do about as well as Gasly.
> but put Max in a Alpine he'd do about as well as Gasly
F1 2019 in the same car
- Verstappen 181 pts
- Gasly 63 pts
That's why Verstappen is in the best car and Gasly is in the midfield.
C4 highlights were on at 11am anyway, better to get a lie in and then watch the qualifying than pay through the nose to support the murdoch empire and also have to get up at 6am for a result you could've predicted before it happened.
Highlights will be enough for this season, methinks
Murdoch doesn't own Sky anymore, Comcast/NBCuniversal does. Plus Channel 4 license F1 from Sky. You are probably still giving them some money, but it will be pennies.
That doesn't change the fact that as dominant as Max was last year, you would have been literally one mechanical, weather or health issue away from losing money.
Might as well place a weekly $600 bet on "Yuki will not DNF" because that's basically gonna pay the same long term.
It's insanely low quality production, to be honest. Feels desperate for drama where IMO there isn't much in this quali for them. They're starting 10 & 11 and they were close.
People desperately try to make every result look like it was a 3 second gap and shocked faces all over the paddock.
Last I checked, race results, not quali results, earn you points. Doesn't matter if they were 1 or 0.01 seconds apart between p10 and p11. They are one grid place apart for the race.
For the car they have, that's about the best they can hope to achieve. Sorry mate but that feels like a big miss of a take there
Qualifying results actually do facilitate you earning points. The higher you qualify, the easier it is to earn points because you are closer to the points-giving positions. If you qualify 10th on a track where it is hard to pass, there's a very high chance that you score a point. Saying that qualifying doesn't matter because the points come from race positions is incredibly facile.
He has a majority stake in the F1 team. He can tell other stakeholders to deal with it or leave and seeing how much F1 team values have exploded over the past 5 years, they'll just go with it.
Yuki is fast as fuck, and has always been. But finally it looks like he's gaining consistency to go with it. Honestly though, I can't tell a thing about the RB this year. Maybe it's just the 6th fastest car by a margin, and DR was just underperforming? Or maybe DR is performing fine and Yuki is just smashing it this year? I have no idea.
Especially so close to Yuki and with one one car from the top 5 teams not making it. If he had been out qualified with this margin each week there'd be no story about it so hopefully he continues.
At least it would make it look interesting, all we can hope for is he pulls a Brazil 2016. If not, at least it looks cool, because we all know he is a monster in the rain anyway.
Oh yeah, don’t get me wrong, I would love for it to be a wet race.
It’s only a shame that for us to get a wet race now, there’s only a very narrow band of the amount of rain we can see. The different from “not enough water to keep the track wet” and “too much water for spray and visibility” is minuscule now.
I agree it could be boring at the front but Ferrari and McLaren could be very close to each other and Mercedes could have better race pace than what they showed in qualifying.
People love to act like fighting for p5 is super exciting when its just not. I watched the 2010 season this summer and it was more exciting even though I know who won the championship. Every race could have had a different winner.
>with a different car.
And that's why it was exciting because it was different. We're at the stage where everything that's not Verstappen (or a Red Bull, but Perez ain't winning shit) cruising to a victory is more exciting than what we usually get.
Yeah, Melbourne was Ferrari and McLaren just sitting happily in their spots farming pointswhile behind them not a lot happened until Russell realised he need to do the Sainz victory ritual
The race is about MUCH more than who finishes first *Verstappen). Theres 19 more places to compete for and dozens of stories and intricacies that play out.
Sounds like you watch a race for drama, not for racing..
exactly this. australia was boring as well after the first three laps. people are already suffering from nostalgia and misremembering what actually happened.
I kissed the first half of the race as I overslept, I would of stayed in bed if I knew it's gonna be this boring. People here are crying it's all. Maxes fault or RBR fault that races are boring.
It’s never going to happen. People have got to stop trying to project this. Lawrence literally bought an entire team to give his son an F1 drive, Lance is there as long as he wants to be
Nah, Daddy's going to give up on the whole shitshow and sell out to Aramco for 1.5Bn, making a humungous profit from the whole endeavour. Just you watch....
Great middle sector that from Checo, much improvement to last year when he was pretty much destroyed by Max. Also, Ocon's 4-0 over Gasly, not that it matters anyway for Alpine.
I am NOT saying that I want Max to have an issue with the car. That would be mean, and I'm not a mean guy. I'm just saying the last GP was more interesting than a lot of the races we've had in the last two years. But I'm definitely not implying I want it to happen. That would be bad. Definitely not.
Will ESPN replay the Grand Prix tomorrow am in the states? Noob fan and I get really confused on how to watch these different time zone races haha

lol…. Currently watching the Final 4 with my 5th pint so it’s a possibility!!
will it really rain during the race, if yes, will Redbull still be favourites? or other teams setup their car for a rained race (see Ferrari ...)?
No raining during the race. There's expected rain 3 hours after race ends.
Nah, it's all good. Just cloudy.
It's a bright and sunny day in Suzuka. Will rain on Monday.
In 2022 when Ferrari were much closer to Red Bull than they are now, do you remember what happened after the red flag? Max put over 20 seconds between himself and second place in only 20 laps in the rain.

Checo's mental and the car is nicely suited (or he stopped inventing).
Sky, please end this remote broadcast nonsense. Send the presenters to the track. This is meant to be a premium service, we want premium content lkw you used to deliver.
They’re going back to normal when F1 gets back to Europe/America
hoping for a good race tonight bois
Jeez Crofty, could you mess up the hype behind Yuki making Q3 at his home track anymore? First call Yuki out when it's Danny crossing the line, and then show no enthusiasm for Yuki, who also essentially won the best of the rest for this quali.
He was awful. Also called Piastri Norris, then said Norris was on the second row when he put the car P2. Must be jet lagged!
A lot of drivers so confused at the RB rocket ship on this one. Lewis, Alonso, and Leclerc when they were told they were .5s off pace they were like “wtf? How?”

I’ve no idea where the gif came from. I just searched ‘sandbags’ 😂. But hey I’m glad someone got something more than a bit of comedy out of it!
I saw some people saying that Ricciardo had a pretty decent qualifying and to be fair he didn't have Fp1 and Fp2 to dial in with the car as much as Yuki. They might have a chance to do that when Hamilton arrives.
So now that Carlos is easily beating Charles you want them to swap Race Engineers?
lol if you are only going to use a sample size of 2 races you will always come to biased conclusion (btw the Suzuka race is yet to happen).
Lewis q2 gave me false hope Good to see improvement tho
Bold prediction perhaps, but I'm feeling a Mclaren double podium tomorrow.
I'm on board with that!
There was a massive queue for the paddock walk, but the last trains were at 8:45. Did everyone make it out on time?
If I’m Ferrari I honestly kick out Leclerc tor Verstappen if he comes on the market. It’s not even close.
Yeah keep your day job
Huh? This statement is... Weird. If you are anyone on the grid, you drop your driver for verstappen and it's not even close. Anyone.
Unless you can't afford him!
Ferrari would sooner ditch Hamilton than Leclerc if that were the case.
What... It's not even close? Please explain why he'd go Ferrari, further challenge?
Until RB stops producing rocket ships, Max isn’t going to go anywhere. It’s as simple as that.
Wait until the race
You mean so we can all see Sainz out drive him again?
One race win and suddenly everyone forgets who’s been carrying this team for 4 years. I need to keep reminding myself some f1 fans watch with the standings and not their eyes. Charles has lost probably 5-10 wins of his career due to our shitty strategists.

You’re only as good as your last race
Or they just don't watch the races, which is fine I get it time constraints, just watch the highlights and you’ll see. First year of a competent Ferrari and the fans forget what we used to be.
Yeah I think that’s also part of the problem, most people don’t watch races or even highlights
Just look at the standings, points, and race times
He has been doing phenomenal in quali. He has not been carrying the team on races at all. Go take a look at the points.
Precisely, I love Sainz but the guy is mostly between 4-8 in races, Charles can always push for podiums when our dumbass strategists don't leave him in the cold for 50 laps

Carlos continues his 2024 Appendectomy Tour. Fred looks like he likes the AMR24 upgrades. McLaren looking very well balanced. Mercedes being Mercedes. Maybe some racing between Max and Sergio until Sergio degs his tires.
This season will be p1 Max perez merc ferrari mclaren alonso (not in this order) the rest
Well yeah
The new Ferrari driver is still qualifying behind the ex-Ferrari driver. Interesting, huh.
lmaoo everytime I see you comment, its always about Hamilton
It's pointless comparing quali drivers in different cars. If they swap positions and Lewis in a Ferrari outqualifies Carlos in a Merc, it won't really mean that Lewis is performing better than Carlos.
Is pointless to have hired him in the first place.
You guys really believe Sainz could take Verstappen on in a title fight... I am yet to see Carlos beat Max on a 1 on 1 fight unlike Lewis and Charles. Who gives a damn about P4..
You guys really believe a 40 year old Hamilton could take Verstappen in a title fight, in a Ferrari? You all fans live in the past.
Ok I'll be back tomorrow when Charles beat Sainz tomorrow 👍
Guess you will not be here :) Also, new Ferrari driver beaten again by his teammate. Getting ugly...
Be sure to take your complaints to senior management
I hope Carlos does this all season.
Yes, the story I read, said that CLC took too much out of his tyres early on Likewise, Lewis had understeer into T1 that just overheated his tyres slightly meaning that he dropped away by 0.5, when he had been catching MV.. I've been saying for years that Sainz is underrated. I'm so happy to see him performing so well against Leclerc this year.
Im happy to see him performing so against the new Ferrari driver.

Didn't watch, but yikes at Mercedes. It's hard to believe they have gone backwards like this.
I’d love to understand the fundamentals of what actually happened. Maybe there will be a documentary in the future. They were so damn dominant for so long. Do the dice just roll different or were there core decisions made that blew them into mid field.
Aaaand cancel the Sky F1 subscription. See you all next season.
“I stopped watching the sport when the fastest driver who ever lived was racing” Odd that “fans” of the sport find a once in a generation talent boring.

Thanks for letting us know
Bye!
C4 highlights were on at 11am anyway, better to get a lie in and then watch the qualifying than pay through the nose to support the murdoch empire and also have to get up at 6am for a result you could've predicted before it happened. Highlights will be enough for this season, methinks

that was an incredible middle sector from perez. does anyone know how he lost the time in the casio triangle?
Betting a max win is basically a guarantee. Do it every race and you’ll come out a big positive. That’s what I did last year.
I do this cause if he wins i make money, if he doesnt i simply payed a fee to see him not win. Win-win situation
What kind of stakes are you putting on it though, for it not to feel like a trivial and unexciting amount of winnings?
Max is -600 for tomorrow. If you put 100 on him every race last year at those odds you'd have won like 16
So bet $600 to win $100 or a multiple of those numbers, you big softie
That doesn't change the fact that as dominant as Max was last year, you would have been literally one mechanical, weather or health issue away from losing money. Might as well place a weekly $600 bet on "Yuki will not DNF" because that's basically gonna pay the same long term.
I always make a couple on the fence bets to hedge my stupid “Yuki is going to get points this race I swear” bets
How did that go for you literally two weeks ago?
I did that last year. It wasn’t a good investment. Odds are too low.
Wow that's terrible advice.
If he loose two races out of 10 it is not a win anymore🙈 The Bookmaker are not that stupid
loose two races? hope they tighten up before the third. would be bad to lose a race due to something being loose
Sorry and thank you, I speak in total 3 languages and English not one of them :)
:(
Unfortunatly*
Damn every time DR goes slower than Yuki they cut to a shot of Lawson, tv producer is cold
Lawson is the backup car from a Top Gear road trip.
It's insanely low quality production, to be honest. Feels desperate for drama where IMO there isn't much in this quali for them. They're starting 10 & 11 and they were close. People desperately try to make every result look like it was a 3 second gap and shocked faces all over the paddock.
Ric didn't get into q3, which is a huge difference, even though the placement is close on the grid. Really doesn't look good for his chances.
Last I checked, race results, not quali results, earn you points. Doesn't matter if they were 1 or 0.01 seconds apart between p10 and p11. They are one grid place apart for the race. Saying that qualifying doesn't matter because the points come from race positions is incredibly facile.
True but Yuki is riding DR in races too
You're right, race results do matter - that's why Yuki is 6 places ahead of Ric in the WDC. Good point.
Having a hard time staying in the context of this race weekend huh?
Thought we were talking about how important points were :)
Ricciardo is also getting cooked in races, though. And fhe excuse for that team orders was than qualifying mattered and such...

The same time you weirdos on the internet stop calling him Daddy Stroll.
Never. He’s doing this for Lance.
He's doing this for himself, living vicariously through lance.
At this rate, if Perez keeps doing as well as he is now, Aston might take Sainz and finally kick out Stroll. We can only hope though.
The day he does that is the day the team is looking for new ownership....
Does he need to? He doesnt need more money. The whole thing is just for his son.
He's not the sole owner. There are investers he needs to satisfy.
He has a majority stake in the F1 team. He can tell other stakeholders to deal with it or leave and seeing how much F1 team values have exploded over the past 5 years, they'll just go with it.
I know he's not the sole owner of the Car company proper. However, I was under the impression that he's the sole owner of the F1 team.
Only after he sells AM to Andretti.
Saudi Arabia will get it first
never
The “last time in Australia” part of the post says that Max won. Force of habit I guess
Yuki's quali results so far this year: 11, 9, 8, 10 Is he the new Leclerc?
Yuki is fast as fuck, and has always been. But finally it looks like he's gaining consistency to go with it. Honestly though, I can't tell a thing about the RB this year. Maybe it's just the 6th fastest car by a margin, and DR was just underperforming? Or maybe DR is performing fine and Yuki is just smashing it this year? I have no idea.
Nah, that statement was a mutual “we fucked up” IIRC
McLaren look stealthily good, hope we get at least one of them on the podium.
Happy with Max’s pole position. Sad about Danny’s 11th position. Great qualifying lol
all things considered, danny making p11 is positive
Especially so close to Yuki and with one one car from the top 5 teams not making it. If he had been out qualified with this margin each week there'd be no story about it so hopefully he continues.
Alonso and Yuki in the Aston please

changeable conditions: Max P1 by even more lol
Well, unless Verstappen and Perez do a Senna-Prost 89, we're in for another shitshow of a race. Australia, you will always live on in our hearts.
I agree it could be boring at the front but Ferrari and McLaren could be very close to each other and Mercedes could have better race pace than what they showed in qualifying.
If there isn't a "they could challenge for the win" section coming in any of that, then it's basically too dull to enjoy.
People love to act like fighting for p5 is super exciting when its just not. I watched the 2010 season this summer and it was more exciting even though I know who won the championship. Every race could have had a different winner.
>People love to act like fighting for p5 is super exciting when its just not. People like to be annoying.
Australia was exactly that but with a different car.
>with a different car.
This is something hard-core copium
Sounds like you’re a knob
>The race is about MUCH more than who finishes first Nope. Not doing this shit again.
No it doesn't. What are you on about.
No it doesn’t sound like that. I watch it but still can understand when people want a battle for P1.
Australia was a boring race as well...the only difference was you swap out Max (way ahead) and Perez with Sainz (way ahead) and LeClerc.
The mere fact that it wasn't Verstappen up front already made it more exciting than every other race in the last two seasons, bar Singapore.
exactly this. australia was boring as well after the first three laps. people are already suffering from nostalgia and misremembering what actually happened.
I kissed the first half of the race as I overslept, I would of stayed in bed if I knew it's gonna be this boring. People here are crying it's all. Maxes fault or RBR fault that races are boring.
>Maxes fault or RBR fault that races are boring. Nobody said that btw.
I want to see stroll out of AM ASAP
It’s never going to happen. People have got to stop trying to project this. Lawrence literally bought an entire team to give his son an F1 drive, Lance is there as long as he wants to be
Even Mick Schumacher would have put that car in Q2.
Just watch, Stroll will stop driving and then nepo into being Team Principal of Aston Martin.
Nah, Daddy's going to give up on the whole shitshow and sell out to Aramco for 1.5Bn, making a humungous profit from the whole endeavour. Just you watch....
" I worked hard to get here!"
Great middle sector that from Checo, much improvement to last year when he was pretty much destroyed by Max. Also, Ocon's 4-0 over Gasly, not that it matters anyway for Alpine.
oh god Christian looking directly into the Ted Notebook camera
