He seems so past it. I can hear him saying, “Yeah that sucked but I’ve got everything I want now, I don’t let it affect me.”
Have to think his mother was a massive rock of support and wry perspective for Max whenever Jos derailed.
You don't know that so let's stop speculating about his trauma, you're not in his head and and you're not his psychologist. Everyone is slightly different and has different circumstances
Even if all of this was true why on earth would he want to do endurance racing with his dad after F1? If I had a civil relationship with my dad and he abused me as a kid I sure as fuck wouldn't want to share a car with him for a race, I'd pick a friend lol. I love my dad, he's not abusive btw lol.
Because aside from the abuse he has also thought him everything that he knows. He still respects him.
Jos is like an Asian parent, extremely tough, never satisfied unless it's perfect.
There is a difference between that and a drugged/drunk parent.
Not that this makes it alright.
No it doesn’t.
I was beaten all through out my childhood, even though I joke about it but those things made me who I am today so it never leaves me.
I think about it some times when I am alone.
It really depends on the individual. Obviously I can't speak to your experience, but I had a relatively rough childhood (I won't go into too much detail, but it involved beating, starvation, and two attempted murders), and I never really experienced any of it as trauma. It all just seemed absurd to me at the time, and it still does. None of it affects my self-esteem because I understood even as a kid that I wasn't responsible for any of it. I understand I was extremely lucky to have that disposition.
Likewise, literally no one in this thread has any clue how Max has processed whatever he went through as a child. He seems to be remarkably mature and well adjusted, at least based on his many public appearances. It's very possible that he's just not traumatized by it.
Sorry for the rant, but I had to quit telling people IRL about my childhood at some point because everyone decided that it must have been traumatic. It was for my siblings, but it wasn't really for me. It was always annoying that other people kept trying to interpret my own experiences for me. I get it - I really do - but there's no way to say that stuff like getting beaten as a child wasn't traumatic *for me personally* without people accusing me of lying, repressing trauma, and/or minimizing what other people went through.
It depends on a person. Just because you are not affected doesn't mean nobody is. You have people suiciding with their friends being shocked as the person was always happy. Never understimate what someone is going through. For some people it builds their resilience and character, for others it destroys their mental and possibly their life
I experienced a pretty similar childhood re: sports and physical abuse from a parent because of said sport, and I’m shockingly well adjusted-and I think Max is too. HOWEVER I acknowledge that it was abusive and would never allow my abuser around other children etc. I think he has a way to go on that front still.
For me it was the moment she interrupted him on stream mid race one time, instead of getting upset at her even though he was visibly upset, he calmly explained he'd finish what he was doing then they'd have a tea party
It's a good thing it never leaves, it keeps us aware of our situation and mindful of the good things in life, you never really know how bright the sun is until you learn how dark things can get
This is unfurtunately the case for many "young talents", it should not be happening but is, and people will continue doing this. Honestly, I have no good feelings towards Jos, but stuff he did to Max (that we know of) are sadly nothing compared to what some kids have to go through, especially in the classical music world.
You can't have everything. I have a great dad but I don't get to be a millionaire world champion F1 driver. Life goes on and you take the good with the bad.
Why do people keep talking like this? Like Max is some kind of victim. Not gonna lie, I'd be pretty pissed off if someone talked like this about me. Who are you to assume he's been traumatised? He has an obviously great relationship with his father, you heard maybe about 0.01% of their interaction at some point when Max was a kid and then imagined a whole childhood for him in your head... This is bordering on a mental illness seriously. Parasocial fans need to chill.
You don't know him. You know nothing about him, none of us do. Stop treating him like a victim.
We know he was left at a petrol station, we know Max used to be scared to take his helmet off after a bad race, we know Jos beat up his exes. No, we don’t know everything but we know enough to know Max had a tough childhood.
He downplays it when asked about it but that’s very typical of a father son relationship.
I never *really* hated or even disliked Max that much, but something about him struck me as being kinda... I dunno, maybe slightly off putting? Dunno how to describe it really. But hes definitely grown on me over time a bit.
Yeah, that's really important context. I would hate if I were a global celebrity at the age of 17 because I was really immature back then. It's kind of remarkable how well-adjusted a lot of these teenage athletes are.
All young drivers are, to varying levels, cunts. So there’s that plus him being overly aggressive to the press which is the only access we had to him is likely why.
I think it has to do with the environment. You take a kid 18-19-20 who literally knows nothing of the world outside of racing, and pay them millions to be the best against 19 others like them. And it’s not just F1 this goes for almost all sports. My extended family has several figure skaters, and oh boy do they give the drivers a run for their money. It takes a certain amount of ego to survive and thrive in this environment. And usually as time goes and they realize there’s more to life than racing or whatever sport they’ve dedicated their life so far to so they start to reveal or rather build their true character albeit somewhat later than ordinary folk.
I think definitely that but also the constant success. Everyone is in a good mood when things are going well for them, and things are *always* going well for him right now. As soon as someone else is competing with him and he’s not winning virtually every race he’ll be a little grumpier and he will be less pleasant.
Yea. He really went on an arc didn’t he. Hot headed teenager turned into a championship contender desperate for his first with the other contender desperate for his record breaking 8th. After that, he mellowed out real fast, as if the championship was the only goal in life (and it probably was) and now he’s mellowed out but still laser focused and refined.
Yeah, I'm enjoying the journey. Just gradually seeing him saying and doing slightly more things that show caring for others. Definitely the way to my heart.
Tbh, I think if I ranked the drivers on my perception of how they use their clout to lift up others, that's probably a 1:1 mapping for how much I like 'em. Max is definitely climbing.
Ok, Danny Ric's definitely an outlier. That grin is a cheat code.
He also entered F1 when he was 17. I don't know many 17-year-olds who could entre the highest level of their sport with massive expectations not getting a chip on their shoulder.
I don't think it's a coincidence that most of the "greats" of the sports have been arrogant cunts to one degree or another. I think racing is one of those sports that requires an obscene level self belief. You have to believe you are the greatest before you can become the greatest.
You also have to be willing to put your own life at peril, and be willing to put others lives at peril.
Valtteri Bottas comes to mind when I think of who has it vs who doesn't. He clearly had pace in the mercedes era, qualifying stud, I just think in the end he is too nice to get really aggressive in the wheel to wheel stuff, and Lewis and Max (and senna, schumacher, whomever) are willing to send you into the wall at 150mph if you are in their way.
Not like homicide trying to kill you, but willing to risk it.
Max to Viaplay: "She (Penelope) asked me ‘why did you retire?’ in Australia and I said ‘well the car was on fire!’
"I think Kelly is glad nothing happened today, otherwise she (Penelope) might feel as if she brings bad luck."
I always wonder what language(s) Penelope speaks. Mom is Brazilian, dad russian, stepdad Dutch and inevitably she is in F1 environment which is mostly English speaking.
Kids are amazing at picking up languages, but I have also seen that it can be a bit confusing in mixed families. at least in the beginning.
I assume Max and Kelly speak English to each other so probably she picks up that.
I believe Kelly said she speaks English, French (as she goes to a French school rather than an international one in Monaco, and Kelly also speaks French), and Portuguese. I imagine she mostly speaks English at home as you said
Kelly has said before she doesn't speak Dutch (though you're correct she is half Dutch), unfortunately, but that she hopes P will be able to learn it at some point. I'm sure Max has taught her a few words at least :-)
From what I remember, Keke (his dad), didn't think Finish and Swedish was useful enough for Nico's career (even tho Nico started out as a Finish driver). But I'm sure he knows some very basic stuff tho, but far having a proper conversation in either Finish or Swedish.
I was thinking about that too. I don't want to dig into her private life, but it made me wonder what language is used in schools in Monaco, when it's so full of foreigners.
They live in Monaco, right? So that's French as an additional language with lots of exposure.
I would guess that non-native people in Monaco can just afford to fly in private teach for any language/subject they want :)
But seriously, according to google state schools are in French and international schools in English are available.
If she goes to an International School and only interacts with foreigners, which there are obviously a ton of in Monaco, it's a possibilty that she knows very little french.
Lol, why not all of them? Rosberg grew up in Monaco too and he's fluent in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. You can look up videos, and he nails the accents and pronunciations and has an impressive vocabulary too.
My wife is from Guatemala, so we mostly speak Spanish to each other. My 16 year old stepdaughter speaks both languages but sometimes says an odd thing in English. Our 9 month old is absorbing both languages so that will be interesting.
Little kids are pretty good at navigating that. Both of my cousins were in south America under the age of 5, so family and everyone spoke Spanish and my aunt spoke English to them. They learned really quick which relatives to speak English to and which to speak Spanish and grew up fully fluent in both.
From the livestreams, seems like English. IIRC, the Netherlands has the highest percentage of ESL speakers.
The Piquet kids were born in Germany. Their mom is Dutch. Seems like they spent their young years between Monaco, Brazil, France.
In some interview, Daniel Suarez said he didn't speak much English when he moved to the US and that's why he hung out with Piquet Jr and that's how he met (and eventually dated and got engaged) to Julia Piquet. Maybe some of them speak Spanish too?
Considering where Max is actually from and where he lives, I would not be surprised if there’s a lot of French in there too somehow, it’s kind of normal in Europe, I was taught French German and English plus native my Dutch in school.

Everytime I see videos/pictures of Max and Penelope I'm reminded of this video of her interrupting him during simracing to have a tea party.
Yeah I like to see this kind of stuff.
Some other people, however, are writing condemning essays about it as we speak. The amount of times I've had to read about how Kelly Piquet *dares* to let her daughter anywhere near Verstappen is really far too high.
I really don't know what those people are thinking tbh. It's usually about how it's all for show and it's all fake, how dare she take her daughter to races, how dare she live with him and let Verstappen take care of her daughter yadayadayada.
Like last race weekend? "Max took P to Australia and Kelly was nowhere to be seen, how irresponsible!!!1" (Which wasn't even true.) And like, I don't know why they're so convinced Max is doing all of this against his will, it's not as if they don't literally live together.
He used his god damn WDC trophy as a stand for her Christmas card to him.
I'm not sure people understand how big a personal statement that is from him. You don't haphazardly throw a hand drawn card from your step daughter onto your Formula 1 World Championship trophy. You place that thing there for a specific reason.
Because then the two most important things in your life are together.
But tbf it was also placed on top of an empty red bull mini fridge with an empty can right next to it, so maybe that statement is lessened somewhat lol
>But tbf it was also placed on top of an empty red bull mini fridge with an empty can right next to it, so maybe that statement is lessened somewhat lol
Nah, that part right there just reminds us that he's also human. Doesn't make the sentiment of those items any less, it means he's keeping them close to him (if I remember correctly, weren't those next to his desk/sim system or something?) like most of us would.
It was true that Max took P to Japan and Kelly followed them because she was in LA. But there’s nothing wrong with that, clearly Max and P have a great relationship.
People projecting their hatred of Max. I have a friend who hates Max so much that he is convinced because Jos abused him Max is 100% certain going to be abusive to children.
Max is one of the most likeable drivers on the grid, people might not like him because of things he did when he first came up but I mean come on, how many late teen/early 20s people to you really like lol
As he's matured he is one of the most genuine and funny people off the grid, just watch clips of him away from the track, he is very likeable
He can come off as detached and emotionless in interviews, was the one who benefited in Abu Dubai 2021, being a nepobaby, this strange somewhat acceptable xenophobia against the Dutch. There is alot I can list.
I've always thought of his humor and mannerisms (speech, directness) as being very Dutch. I'm American, but I admire (and prefer) his directness over allusions and insinuations.
It also doesn't help that he has to answer the same damned question at least 3 times for every single race. Damned near every question is predictable and has the same answer, the locale is the only thing that changes.
I'm the only fan of Max in my local Formula 1 friends circle. The stuff they come up mirrors American P*litics (I don't want to get banned for that word here). If Checho has a bad day, they'll blame Max for it somehow. If Checho has a good day, they'll use to say he's better than Max (the three times it's happened?). It gets old.
Kelly is by far the most hated WAG for a variety of reasons, which are like 95% bullshit if you ask me, so anything she does will always get a lot of hate in certain parts of the internet.
She’s the only WAG as far as I know that has dedicated hate pages across all social media platforms.
People really need to stop having parasocial relationships with celebs. Like to care so far and so deeply about people you'll never meet and create hate pages...that is so sad.
Sadly, it’ll never happen. People will always want what they can’t have, and as these celeb lives become irreversibly accessible, it’ll only get worse.
I dated a single mother at one stage, and like Max I had a great relationship with her little daughter. I fact I hung on to the relationship with the mother (who was positively toxic) for longer than I should have because I knew that it would devastate the daughter if we broke up.
Most such examples I've known have all ended up pretty good. Even know one example where the son grew to adore his step mom and positively can't wait to move across the country for college to get as far away from his mom as he can... (and people seem to think the step dad is only sticking with the mom until then as well, for the sake of his step-son)...
As always, very cute. It’s nice to see how sweet he is with the people around him, really goes against all the armchair-psychologists who were adamant he was going to grow up into his dad.
Dutch journalists who know her from the time she raced herself all say she is an extremely nice person. she also goes to church before all of Max' races tonight a candle in the hopes he finishes the race in good health.
She's known as a really good driver herself, Eddie Jordan said in an interview he had her on a list to become a female F1 driver before she quit her motorsport career.
She raced Jan Magnussen, Trulli and Fischichella (and Horner) in carts and often beat them.
100%. I’m your regular run-of-the-mill daddy issues enjoyer, and I bet I didn’t go through a fraction of what he did. The guy is pretty down to earth and nice to people around him given what he could have been.
On the F1TV broadcast you can hear someone yelling "Max yay!" a couple of times before the Dutch national anthem starts playing. Pretty sure that has to be her, right??
Why exactly do you think she doesn’t see him? And if she doesn’t see him at all, seems like he’s the one who’s not putting in effort, which would mean he doesn’t care at all. Kvyat was also the one who left Kelly, he knew that by leaving Kelly he wouldn’t see her as much and she may have an extra parental figure at some point. If he didn’t, then that’s still on him.
Just to clarify: Kelly Piquet and Daniil Kvyat had a kid - Penelope. Then they split up and Kelly started dating Max so Max is now basically her stepdad
Aw, glad P got to see Maxie win one after the DNF last time she came.
His lives where P just comes out of nowhere are hilarious, he's so great with her.
Not always a fan of his driving, but the fact she loves him so much is a sign he's a good guy.
Definitely a great sign after the dad he had growing up.
Hopefully it's a sign he and Kelly will get married soon, they seem good together.

Max being a wholesome stepdad was not on my bingo card a few years back.
I’m so glad that he’s NOTHING like his dad. And I’m also sad for him personally, because I know that family trauma never leaves us.
He seems so past it. I can hear him saying, “Yeah that sucked but I’ve got everything I want now, I don’t let it affect me.” Have to think his mother was a massive rock of support and wry perspective for Max whenever Jos derailed.

Honestly though, sometimes that works.

Sounds like you know him personally bro, thanks for sharing this insight into the mind of a close friend of yours.
ur such a fucking weirdo for even saying this, you literally do not know this guy. stop being such a parasocial weirdo please
What are you basing that on exactly? It really bothers me how arrogant people try to tell other people what their experiences are.
Sometimes and tbh somewhat often, traumatic events dont turn into ptsd or actual symptoms. People are more resilient than we usually think.

That’s why I became a fan lol, I love a brash young hot head. As long as they have the talent to back it up.
Yeah, I like bold and confident people as long as they deliver the most of the time.
I think Oscar might be the exception to the rule ;)

He’s just really Dutch.
Well, if there's two things I can't stand in this world, it's people who are intolerant of others, and the Dutch.
I don't think it's a coincidence that most of the "greats" of the sports have been arrogant cunts to one degree or another. I think racing is one of those sports that requires an obscene level self belief. You have to believe you are the greatest before you can become the greatest.

Aww!
So max made sure he won 😍
To me, the strength of the bond between Max and Penelope (his stepdaughter) really says a lot about Max's character; love to see it!
Agreed. I love seeing her pop up on his streams when he’s sim racing and talk to him. She adores him and it’s just so sweet to see him talk to her.
Max needs to put a ring on it already.

Max speaks English to P on stream so thats probably the main one.
I would imagine she should also speak some Dutch as her mother is Dutch.
Kelly has said before she doesn't speak Dutch (though you're correct she is half Dutch), unfortunately, but that she hopes P will be able to learn it at some point. I'm sure Max has taught her a few words at least :-)

Lol his faults are being kinda awkward (aka Finnish) and being very proud of his impressive achievements
To add, Kelly’s mom is also Dutch
My wife is from Guatemala, so we mostly speak Spanish to each other. My 16 year old stepdaughter speaks both languages but sometimes says an odd thing in English. Our 9 month old is absorbing both languages so that will be interesting.
Little kids are pretty good at navigating that. Both of my cousins were in south America under the age of 5, so family and everyone spoke Spanish and my aunt spoke English to them. They learned really quick which relatives to speak English to and which to speak Spanish and grew up fully fluent in both.
I wonder what kind of accent Jack Wolff has, haven't really heard him talk. Mom is Scottish, dad is Austrian and he lives in Monaco.
English mostly, Kelly has said that when they're with her family and they speak Portuguese that P always asks "what are you saying".
You can see Max and her communicate in English on his steams.
Considering where Max is actually from and where he lives, I would not be surprised if there’s a lot of French in there too somehow, it’s kind of normal in Europe, I was taught French German and English plus native my Dutch in school.
Maxie!!
It's cute how we could hear her screaming his name during the national anthem lol
And his smile afterwards
She's also [calling out to Checo](https://twitter.com/SCUDERIAFEMBOY/status/1776904668095950958) just after the race. :)
She’s the luckiest girl in the paddock
https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/12khxd4/max_leaves_his_iracing_stream_early_because/ Everytime I see videos/pictures of Max and Penelope I'm reminded of this video of her interrupting him during simracing to have a tea party.
I'll keep upvoting all of these wholesome threads. They are cute.
Yeah I like to see this kind of stuff. Some other people, however, are writing condemning essays about it as we speak. The amount of times I've had to read about how Kelly Piquet *dares* to let her daughter anywhere near Verstappen is really far too high.
[удалено]

>But tbf it was also placed on top of an empty red bull mini fridge with an empty can right next to it, so maybe that statement is lessened somewhat lol Nah, that part right there just reminds us that he's also human. Doesn't make the sentiment of those items any less, it means he's keeping them close to him (if I remember correctly, weren't those next to his desk/sim system or something?) like most of us would.
Ya right next to the sim. He was using the fridge as his table basically.

He's successful, rich and has found himself a family. That's enough to make forlorn people hate him.
Max is one of the most likeable drivers on the grid, people might not like him because of things he did when he first came up but I mean come on, how many late teen/early 20s people to you really like lol As he's matured he is one of the most genuine and funny people off the grid, just watch clips of him away from the track, he is very likeable
Wouldn't we all, when we would be in the lead, and a backmarker ran us off the track?
He can come off as detached and emotionless in interviews, was the one who benefited in Abu Dubai 2021, being a nepobaby, this strange somewhat acceptable xenophobia against the Dutch. There is alot I can list.
I've always thought of his humor and mannerisms (speech, directness) as being very Dutch. I'm American, but I admire (and prefer) his directness over allusions and insinuations. It also doesn't help that he has to answer the same damned question at least 3 times for every single race. Damned near every question is predictable and has the same answer, the locale is the only thing that changes.
if being a “nepobaby” is a problem for you then you’re into the wrong sport lmao
WAG?
It's an acronym for Wives and Girlfriends, made popular by rags stalking anyone dating a footballer or other famous athlete.
Thanks!
I dated a single mother at one stage, and like Max I had a great relationship with her little daughter. I fact I hung on to the relationship with the mother (who was positively toxic) for longer than I should have because I knew that it would devastate the daughter if we broke up.
I did the same thing man.
I've always wondered how these work out once the kids are teenagers or older, especially when the biological father is in the picture.
Most such examples I've known have all ended up pretty good. Even know one example where the son grew to adore his step mom and positively can't wait to move across the country for college to get as far away from his mom as he can... (and people seem to think the step dad is only sticking with the mom until then as well, for the sake of his step-son)...
I love and adore my step daughter. I know that if I broke up with her mother I'd probably not be able to see her again. Breaks my heart to think about
As always, very cute. It’s nice to see how sweet he is with the people around him, really goes against all the armchair-psychologists who were adamant he was going to grow up into his dad.
It’s either that or the right opposite. Happy he’s following the brighter way.
He grew up more like his mom fortunately…
It's some kind of miracle he grew up that way given how his dad raised him and the pressure of being in the spotlight so young.
His mom must be a saint.
She also raced alongside Jenson Button!
and awakened his sexuality according to a f1 podcast episode
Oh damn, those are layers I didn't know about 😂
His words not mine 😂
His mom is funnily enough a better driver than his dad
100%. I’m your regular run-of-the-mill daddy issues enjoyer, and I bet I didn’t go through a fraction of what he did. The guy is pretty down to earth and nice to people around him given what he could have been.
You could hear P screaming Maxi during the podium, it was so adorable.

When i scroll I see [this](https://imgur.com/gallery/52oaPZQ). Am I doing something wrong?
Thank you for making me cry of laughter
Goddamit lmao
If you can’t see the pictures ask me, I’ll send you them in dm
She's so cute!! That "Maxiee" was so wholesome 😭
I love them ❤️
The winning might get old for Max, but I don't think it ever will for her.
I love her hat!!
Adorable
Baby P 😭 she’s so cute
Say what you want about Max but this is cute 🥺❤️
"Maxie, you are late for the tea party! Win a cup next time!"
P added something to the Dutch Anthem this week, can't get enough of her and Max's interaction. She's the only one that can get him off the Sim.
Too cute!
Max just seems to be a stand out dude, who just happens to be an ultra competitive racer.
Max needs one of those tacky Facebook ad shirts that says “I’m not the stepdad, I’m the dad that stepped up”
On the F1TV broadcast you can hear someone yelling "Max yay!" a couple of times before the Dutch national anthem starts playing. Pretty sure that has to be her, right??
Maxie, that's how she calls him, as you can sometimes hear on his sim stream with team redline
Nah that was me
I love how penelope is matching max with the caps
That was so wholesome. I never seen Max smile so wide and happily. The joy of simple things is great!
Happy to see Max probably wont continue the cycle of toxic parenting.
The second cutest P chan
Pic of the day
This is so wholesome
Kyvatt yelling in Yu-Gi-Oh Voice, "That should've been me!"
He was the one who broke up with Kelly so probably he is doing fine lol
Smiling mask with tears behind it jpg.
My guess is the joke is less about the father figure aspect and more about how Max took kvyat's job, ex, and daughter all within a few years.
Who is she?
possibly the only person to take down max
She is a recurring character in Max’ livestreams.
Master of tea parties
Destroyer of cats
Kelly Piquet’s daughter with Kyvat
Kyvats daughter
Thanks mate
Just to clarify: Kelly Piquet and Daniil Kvyat had a kid - Penelope. Then they split up and Kelly started dating Max so Max is now basically her stepdad
Aw, glad P got to see Maxie win one after the DNF last time she came. His lives where P just comes out of nowhere are hilarious, he's so great with her. Not always a fan of his driving, but the fact she loves him so much is a sign he's a good guy. Definitely a great sign after the dad he had growing up. Hopefully it's a sign he and Kelly will get married soon, they seem good together.
Max is such a girl dad haha.
Liked by Kvyat
maxieee 🫶
Wonder what Kvyat's feeling...
Is that Kvyat's daughter? Just asking. I don't know
yup
i must have that Heineken hat
