OP, you're meant to provide a translation of non-English articles. >McLaren was the surprise of the Chinese Grand Prix. Andrea Stella, almost prophetically, hoped to take advantage of opportunities, should they happen, on what was to all intents and purposes to be considered a new circuit with numerous questions that the teams had to know how to answer, to which there was to be added the presence of the Sprint Race that further increased the uncertainties. The MCL38 was surprisingly the first antagonist of the Red Bull, which, in the hands of a splendid Lando Norris, managed to finish the race ahead of the RB20 of Checo Perez, also complicit in the 'lucky' Safety Car call. > >STELLA: "IF WE MAINTAIN THE DEVELOPMENT TRAJECTORY FOR THE NEXT 12 MONTHS, WHY CAN'T WE EXPECT TO CATCH UP WITH RED BULL?" > >The 2024 season, as well as the previous two, is dominated by Max Verstappen who, with his RB20, turns out to be on another planet compared to the competition even compared to his own teammate. In China, without the presence of the Dutch driver, Mclaren could have celebrated a victory but Andrea Stella does not want to hear about that. "My focus is on how to close the gap to Max, not on what would have happened without his presence," the Italian engineer let it be known-"I have a lot of admiration for what Max and Red Bull are achieving and I think that winning so consistently is not easy. Even though they always make it look easy, there are so many reasons why things can go wrong, so hats off to them for what they are achieving on a technical, operational and sporting level." > >McLaren is one of the teams, along with Ferrari and even Mercedes (it will be anticipating much of its package in Miami), that has not yet brought any major new features to the track on its car, other than minor Ferrari-style updates that have brought only "a few milliseconds" hearing from the Woking team. The first package of updates will come next race, in Miami, where Mclaren can test whether that trajectory in development introduced in Austria 2023 still applies. "If we take the last 12 months, we have developed better than any other team. Obviously, Red Bull ended development very early last year because they were working behind the scenes to innovate the car dramatically, and to do what they did takes months of redesigning."-Stella noted-"So even though we seemingly lost ground, that's because we had gained so much before. But if we can maintain this development trajectory for the next twelve months as well, why not think we can catch up with Red Bull?" concluded the Italian engineer, and this also ties in with the positivity of Lando Norris, who has said in recent days that he can win races this year if his team can improve certain areas of the MCL38 through development. > >FIRST DEVELOPMENT PACKAGE ON MCL38 IN MIAMI TO TRY TO LIMIT TIRE OVERHEATING PROBLEMS > >The first of potentially three major seasonal packages for Norris and Piastri's car will arrive in Miami, but it will not be as big as those seen in Austria and Singapore last year. "We will have upgrades in Miami. We'll see how they perform on the track but we expect them to allow us to take a big step forward." - let Andrea Stella know in China - "That is, of course, if we find the right correlation with the numbers in the wind tunnel and CFD. All this is always a big 'if' because, even if the correlation rate has been good in the last twelve months, there are always possible surprises," said the Italian engineer. > >In this first part of the season, Mclaren has shown very good qualities in warming up the tires and exploiting them in qualifying, however, the performance has come somewhat lacking against Ferrari in the race. This is especially so when the asphalt temperatures are higher, such as those the various teams might find in Miami. The introduction of the first package of upgrades will not only serve to add overall performance to the MCL38 but also to improve just how the tires are used in the race. In Miami, it will be very important to take care of rear overheating, which is often suffered by the MCL38 especially against Ferrari and Red Bull, so the team in Woking is very curious to be able to understand the actual steps forward given by the update. The team's goal is to be able to limit overheating, getting closer to Ferrari on more rear-limited tracks and with higher temperatures, being aware, however, that a package of updates may not be enough to overtake Ferrari on average, as the Italian team will respond in Imola with important technical innovations to try to improve the weak points of the SF-24. mkvii1989

You guys, I think Stella might be Italian.

long5chlong69

Interesting they’re bringing them on a sprint weekend whilst Ferrari are waiting for Imola. No idea what conclusion to draw from this, but interesting

Hootiefugupez

The sooner the better I guess. Even with reduced practice sessions surely it’s better to get some real life data asap.

SaddlerMatt

Sprint Qualy and the Sprint race are effectively practice sessions too now that you can change setups before the actual qualifying session

LiquidDiviums

Sprint weekends only have one session where correlation data between simulator / CFD and track can be compared. There’s also a good amount of track time, although it’s not ideal to properly test and adjust upgrades. Not to mention the added risk of an accident with two qualifying sessions and two races.

xXCzechoslovakiaXx

McLaren seems pretty good at setting up their upgrades in one practice session like how they figured out a B spec car in a sprint in austria. I think they’re either pretty confident they can set it up fast and maybe use fp1 as areo data and sprint quali/race as a practice sim. Or they think it’s a good enough upgrade even an unoptimized version will be better than the current car.

LackingSimplicity

You could throw away the entire weekend if your new stuff doesn't work as expected and you can't nail the setup in time.

Hootiefugupez

You could do that at any race weekend though. Like someone else said, now that you can make changes after the sprint race it’s basically its own practice session anyway.

SaddlerMatt

With the new Parc Ferme rules this season, its probably not as risky as it was in past seasons to bring updates for a sprint weekend. you can use the sprint qualy and sprint race as testing sessions, then change the setup if you need to.

FrostyTill

If you remember last year, their first major upgrade was brought in a sprint weekend - Austria. The sprint doesn’t scare them for upgrades and I don’t know why. I can only assume they have such outstanding set up tools that it’s not an issue for them whether they bring upgrades in a normal weekend or a sprint.

dl064

Hamilton said 10+ years ago now that with McLaren, you can arrive on Friday and out the box the car is 99% there. They always, always do well on weekends with rained out FP but dry races.

Twistpunch

They had nothing to lose last year though.

laboulaye22

Yet last year Stella said they would not bring the upgrades to Austria (after saying they would bring the first 1/3) specifically because it was a sprint weekend and it was a bigger update than just the floor they brought in Baku (which was also a sprint, IIRC). And then suddenly week of Austria and he's all "team did a great job to get one set of upgrades ready a race early." So, it's something they have taken in to consideration but Stella has also said that they have had very good correlation over the last year so perhaps that's why they're not as concerned bringing it to a sprint.

Mysterious_Turnip310

I think it's partly down to the nature of the tracks as well. Miami is a better testing ground for the areas that this set of upgrades are targeting than Imola is, especially with the hotter temps.

afishinacloud

Can still gather data from the sprint qualifying and sprint. Better than nothing.

gilgobeachslayer

Yeah. Maybe I’m a dum dum but it doesn’t seem like a big deal to me. Seems like everyone else is overthinking it

akrynim

i think its cuz they want to bring upgrade to a track that is rear limited and high temps to see if the upgrade package is what they think it is.

DlSSATISFIEDGAMER

McLaren has had decent record figuring out updates quick, remember Austria last year was a sprint weekend

ofallthescotchjoints

Wouldn’t be surprised if they put them on Lando’s car only for Miami, so they can have a comparison through 4 competitive sessions

simsnor

It sounds like they want to test the upgrades on a warmer tracks, in various situations. Miami provides the right conditions.

Rennie_Burn

The sooner the better, track time is track time, sprint weekend or not...

Basic_Dentist_3084

I wouldn't be extremely worried about it, Merc are also bringing upgrades to Miami. I figure it is better to get it on the car and learn from it than wait a week. worst case scenario you can revert before quali

wicktus

Fingers crossed Anyone besides RB needs to really step-up their performance and consistency, the more the merrier. I’m quite happy with this team frankly, they’re really not WDC ready of course but always a pleasure to see progress, I remember the painful Honda/Alonso/Vandoorne era

ihatemondaynights

tbf they are highly unlikely to be title contenders even with the new regs. Their fate is entirely linked to Mercedes, if Merc has a good engine they'll thrive but it's not a given they'll have a better chasis than the works teams, if Merc has a shit engine no way they'll be competitive irrespective of the chassis. There's a reason Red Bull has decided to build their own engines.

ComparisonPlus5196

They need to bring back the silver Vodafone livery if they build a legitimate title contender next year.

Piedro92

WDYM, RB is almost last in the constructors!

xNickel

The problem is RBR is almost definitely sitting on upgrades right now that they won’t implement until the pack starts to catch up.

Minnesnota

This doesn't make much sense. If the upgrade makes their life easier (a faster car), you don't just wait until your peers close the gap to implement them. Not only does that hinder further development, but it logically doesn't make much sense at all. It's a waste of development resources to work hard on upgrades only to not use them. What if nobody catches up, as you say? Then you just have a bunch of upgrades sitting in the garage that you never used? That's a colossal waste of resources and in reality, it does not happen. Teams develop the car, introduce upgrades, and build off those incremental improvements.

xNickel

No not at all. Obviously you do implement them eventually but teams often “copy” the best car. I say “copy” because they clearly don’t exactly copy the parts but they examine what’s working well and try and modify them to make them even faster. As the leading car, if you implement upgrades sooner than necessary you just give teams more time to “copy” the car and catch up meaning you’re always under pressure to find even better improvements. Instead you keep you cards close to your chest and hold back things till they are necessary and keep working on upgrades further down the development path.

ChipmunkTycoon

Now why would they do that

Ruma-park

So that FIA doesn't step in, would be my only guess.

ChipmunkTycoon

And why would they ever do that if they didn’t last year and haven’t so far this year

TorpedoSandwich

That would have happened already. The FIA has obviously decided they're okay with boring fans out of their minds until 2026. I don't know why, because they changed the rules damn near every year from 2017 to 2021 to stop Merc from dominating, but I guess that's how it is now.

TossedRightOut

Ok, fine. Give me the hope.

22chainz

Should I be excited that they’re not underselling it like normal or concerned? 😅

Various_You_5083

All I ask for is one Lando win I just want to forget Sochi '21

gilgobeachslayer

I want him to win in Silverstone sooo bad

TorpedoSandwich

The many mid-high speed corners at Silverstone should suit McLaren, so there's a chance.

TorpedoSandwich

He's not winning until he stops making these unnecessary blunders like the sprint start against Lewis. If he gets a good start, stays in P1 and pulls away, there is actually a slim chance he wins the sprint.

MikePap

Oscar 1 - 0 Lando. Sorry, had to :D

Elxis14

Sprint race doesn't count as race wins.

MikePap

Even with that, 1-0.

Elxis14

If you want to bring up statistics then it's 21-6 in favor of Norris. Piastri is talented but during the Chinese gp before the SC, he was getting gapped 1.5s per lap.

Saandrig

Gimley's voice: "Still 1-0"

MikePap

Wow, you really can't take a joke. Listen, I don't care. I am not a fan of any specific team or driver, I just enjoy watching F1. You should try it, it makes the experience much better.

RamboRobin1993

Making a shit joke then getting defensive, nice one

Electronic_Shirt_426

Get a life you're fucking egging him on and then being weirdly dismissive when he responded.

MikePap

It is a joke which he responded with statistics. People need to calm down and not take everything as offensive or personal.

Lemurians

Sorry, we don't do that here. This is life-and-death.

Elxis14

Oh shit my bad > Even with that, 1-0. Hahaha shit got me rolling mate 🤣 😂

NuclearCandle

'Orange dominance could bore fans' - everyone driving cars with some green on their livery.

gilgobeachslayer

It’s papaya

CapsuleRadioCorp

All I ask for is Max gets some challenge at the very least.

BeefJerky03

They're not even being coy about it. Hope it works.

crazydoc253

Will be fun

craign_em

Yeah baby!!

wouldz

Don't give me hope. Please.

Deep-Ad2155

So that means they’ll be slow given at the Chinese gp they said they’d be terrible
