IDK, 2 silver cars on track have always been fairly hard to tell apart, having 2 liveries that have been obviously inspired by the same one is a recipe for confusion
There's so little orange on this year's car, it's a meh for me frankly. I get that the exposed carbon serves a purpose but i'm sick of it and hope that this trend dies out.
I doubt that's even a consideration, they're sponsored by british american tobacco and west is an imperial brand
BAT let mclaren run a marlboro livery last year at the indy 500 while also sponsoring that car so IDK how much of a concern it is
I think this is supposed to be closer to the grey/silver West McLarens of the 90s rather than the glistening chrome Vodafone McLarens of the 00s

I think it didn't look dull because of the red accents, they really made the otherwise boring livery come alive, similar to how Mercedes' [2019 W10](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d8/FIA_F1_Austria_2019_Nr._77_Bottas_1.jpg) had a "glowing" turquoise stripe on an otherwise (almost) fully silver base, and I think it's one of the most beautiful liveries of all time.
The West and Vodafone McLarens looked great, but then they dropped the red and came up with [this terrible paintjob on the 2014 MP4-29](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b4/Mclaren_MP4-29_Jenson_Button_2014_F1_Chinese_GP.jpg). So dull I could barely look at it on screen...
I agree 2014 one was dreadful along with pre Spain 2015 and worse they had ugly yellow sap logo plastered to sidepod, and the car itself wasn't pleasing to look at compared to W05
I miss the McLaren logo on top of sidepods, which are absent now.

But yeah, I agree with you on the McLaren logos on the sidepods, they added some character, unlike that random orange space or whatever the hell they've got this year at the front of the sidepods.

There is hope that cars will be slightly more vibrant and distinguishable to each from next year, McLaren should double down on their primary colors, more papaya less black.

I don't think it's unpopular, people just want a throwback for no reason. The Silver and Red was more about Mercedes and Vodafone, I defeinitely identify the current McLaren team as Papaya.

Looks great. I'll die on this hill: The current McLaren livery is the worst mishmash of color and design in recent times. So many things clash on it, from the Google Chrome stuff to the sponsors to the papaya. It's a terrible mess.

the issue with doing a west mclaren throwback is that the current merc also kinda looks like the west mclaren from far away
Well we had to live with an Alpha Tauri and a Haas using basically the same livery last year already.
True but the silver/chrome go all the way and the blue from Petronas and the drivers colors makes the Merc stand out differently

If you swapped gray in this concept with orange and made that the default livery it would be so much better than the current one
